It will always amaze me how this band did so much in their first 3 albums. Add to that, 3 albums in 3 years is impressive for any band.
Exactly, especially during that time when there was no pro tools or anything. They had to physically go in to the studio and mic everything up. Definitely impressive for sure!
RUSH
Not really. Pumping out albums early in your career is pretty par for the course for most bands. Most bands had 3 albums in three years during that time including Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, etc. Testament had 4 albums in 3 years. Black Sabbath had 5 albums in three years. Iron Maiden had 4. Judas Priest released Sin After Sin, Stained Glass, and Sad Wings all within 3 years. You could go on. It's because lots of bands already have a lot of songs written, or conceived, before they even record their first album. Also you're younger, hungrier, you have more ideas to explore. Also touring and making albums is more important in the early stages of your career because you have to build a fan base.
@@Gregbaltzer Megadeth only had two albums out in 1986.
@@russkate88 i was thinkin So Far, So Good came out in '87. But 85-88 is still 3 years. Black Flag who had 5 albums in 2 years. Kreator had 3 albums from 85-87, so 2 years. The point remains that it's not that amazing. Lots of bands pump out albums early in their career.
Rest in peace Cliff, if only that ice wasn’t there.
Lars
The crash was not caused by ice, James said he walked miles down the road and saw no ice and then the drivers breath reeked of alcohol .
@@Rockin90 in the snow, in his socks and underwear
@@Rockin90 I haven’t hear that part, I’ve heard that James walked up and down and was furious at the driver but I didn’t hear the part about the driver actually being drunk
@@valdyr4695there’s an interview I think it says it there from the black ice one
The snare that Lars used was actually a 6.5x14 Ludwig Black Beauty that was loaned to him by Rick Allen from Def Leppard.
@@TedDiabetes Right on Ted - and now listening, it does have that familiar ring. Thanks for that man!

@TedDiabetes thank you Ted!!!

Great video! Just as a side note: at the time, Metallica were still basically using the same guitars as on “Ride The Lightning”, meaning there were no ESPs yet. James’ Explorer was still a Gibson, most likely with stock pick ups. The 500t pick ups that are still found on most current day explorers are fairly aggressive ones, featuring a ceramic magnet. Same goes with Kirk’s guitars: he was probably using his old Flying Vs and maybe his Jackson RR1 laced with EMGs (EMG 81 on the bridge position). He was Metallica’s first EMG adopter while James’ was still using his Explorer pretty much stock.
Cheers!
Thank you very much! You are right about the RR 1 for Kirk. For James, supposedly he was actually using the kill bon Jovi king V.... So yeah I was wrong in my video for sure. That guitar made a reemergence in the studio during hardwired to self-destruct, though I'm sure it's made appearances before as well. Apparently that was the guitar that seemed a bit too much like Megadeth... Since Dave was slinging one in his own group or at least one like it. See you sent me down a rabbit hole - I should have gone down it before taping this but hey better late than never. Thank you so much man I really appreciate it!
@@guitarmeetsscience totally right about the King V! I guess James’ distanced himself from that “shape” because it was associated with Dave Mustaine.
Again, great video and I’ve been subscribed to your channel for some time now. Keep it up! Cheers from Mexico!
Cheers brother thank you!!!
If you’re curious it’s actually the Mesa Mark 2 C+. Legendary amp. Thanks for the content!!!!
Thank you lol.... Yeah I mess up sometimes - but very rarely because I'm nearly perfect 🤣
I was lucky to see them in 86 at a one off about 3 months before Cliff passed it was an awesome show never seen them again, would really like see them again with Robert
That is pretty awesome that you caught them at that time. I saw them twice in the '90s, and then once a year and a half ago... And man, they are killing it now way more than they did in the '90s. I can imagine they were about his intense during the cliff days. Highly recommended for sure!
Noone knows why life does what it does especially to certain people doing similar things dozens of times but suffer no tragedies. Cliff, unfortunately like so many like him who died from mind-blowing means, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Randy Rhodes, Dimebag Darryl as a few examples. Many artist have done many times what each one of the aforementioned have untimely died from. Years of touring, flying and doing wild things and yet certain people are sheltered from any dangers while others eventually succumb to its unbreakable grasp. I'm just grateful that these artists left a lifetime of original awe inspiring body of work to listen and enjoy for eternity. Long live the Metal Titans 🤟🏼♥️
@@mojorisin7371 thanks for that! Great comment!
Great series. I hope you document AJFA soon!
That's next.
Thank you!! That's my favorite one on theirs....🤘😎🤘
If there is a bass heaven, Cliff rules! 💥
3:29 “Brutally heavy” 🇦🇺🦘🐨🌏
Damaged inc.... best song on the album, the rhythm riff on the bridge....so good
That is a great tune - I'm serious riffage!
Orion is easily the standout track on the album though. In fact even when taking all their other albums into account!
I’m thinking Cliff was kind of like George Martin, he had the musical ability to guide the process, I bet the songs would have been great for much longer with him. Not just the incredible bass but his instincts.
Agreed - that is pretty spot-on!
I have always felt that this was the last album where Kirk Hammett was allowed to stretch his legs musically. Ever since it seems that his playing is more restrained, and its hard to tell if that its Hetfield and Ulrich throttling him or if he just isn't as inspired as he used to be.
I don't know though he seemed to really shine well on the black album. There was definitely some throttling going on though on St anger for sure. Some of their most recent stuff he seems to be going all out on, and when I saw them a year and a half ago he wasn't holding back at all
Hello Jimmy! Great job brother! Nice vídeo! A big hug from Brasil my dear friend!!👏👏👏👊🤝
Thank you my friend always great to see you!
Great job on the narration, kept me hooked
Thanks Mike! I appreciate it man!
Still hard to believe they were still tuning to 440, other than "The thing that should not be."
Good stuff👍. Disposable Heroes is still my favorite tune on this, although the whole album rocks.
So true - what's weird is that listening to the heavier stuff on this album One would subconsciously think that somehow they were dropped tuned in some way shape or form but no, it was just plain heavy. 🤘🤘
Love your Metallica videos 🤘
Thanks so much man I appreciate it!!! 🙏

Loving the series dude!! Good stuff!!
Thank you so much bro!!!! I really appreciate it!
A Kerry King V is the most expensive Amazon guitar? I would pay for a Hetfield or Holt ESP any day.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 nailed it!!! Yep the ESP would be pretty sweet
🤘Thanks🤘

Do you have (if you dont can u make one) a playlist for all of these documentaries?
Thanks so much for asking! Yep, my "start binging here" playlist has all the docs. I try to keep it updated best I can. 🤘🤘
Ice/black ice on the road in southern Sweden in september is unheard of except in this event as far as i know.
I still maintain that Justice is their best album. Although it is very close.
@@jamesstaggs4160 full agreement! People pan the production of AJFA, but I love how dry and immediate it is, and since the bass is so low it has a certain emptiness that makes it that much more powerful
@@guitarmeetsscience Killer drum sound on that album as well.
The beginning of Orion is Cliff (bass guitar)
Cliff mainly recorded master on the aria pro, you can tell by the tone and the higher fret rang he uses in orion
Makes sense....I think he used a couple depending on what the song called for. Good ear!
@@guitarmeetsscience yeah he used it on thing that should not be, his Rick turned into his D tuning bass that tour. Lol the only reason I know is cause the aria is my dream bass and I love the tone it has
Right on!!! I used to have an Aria pro ii ZZ custom guitar. To date, I could get the action lower on that than anything I've ever owned. It played like a toy it was so easy. Got stolen sadly
You mentioned Cliff’s rickenbacker but I believe by this point he was using his Aria Pro II if I’m not mistaken
I don't doubt it - and a few folks agree with what you're saying so that's probably what he was using. Of course he probably had his choice of a few different basses in the studio, and the Aria was pretty good for doing a lot of the higher melodies on especially. Not so sure about the lowdown stuff, but Cliff also liked to keep it simple so maybe he just ran with one bass and that was it
Cliff's Ric had a bunch of issues with the electronics during the sessions for Master, so most the album was recorded with the Aria.
His Ric had none of the original pickups; he replaced them with a Gibson EB-0, a Seymour Duncan JB, and a Seymour Duncan Hotrail Strat pickup hidden where the bridge mute would be that was wired through a push-pull pot to switch it on or off.
They tuned down to C# for the Thing that should not be, love the video though.
Ah good catch!!! Thanks for that! I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🤘🤘
Thing is the weakest song, i always skip, too many great songs, definitely not my jam
L take, Song is so heavy and Kirk has a wicked solo
