if you wanted to condense the sound of the 80's pop pulp culture and film genre for teenage coming of age flicks into one album then thomas dolbys aliens ate my buick has probably done it .
my friends and I would play this regularly to throw scorn on our bottle blonde rivals and the usual put down for a crime of stupidity was," shes not an intellectual giant " in dolby sound of course , love this airheaded blast from the past .

Great song from the last golden era. I firmly believe the 80s were the last time for real quality music- you had a lot of different types of the rock/pop genre from this to Journey to pure pop/soft rock to Heavy Metal. It was a time of moving forward. It all looked really good till around a little after the 90s started. 1990 was fine it was still not bad, then 91 came and there was some questionable stuff, but not the end of the world. The end of rock was 92. Pearl Jam, Nirvana Alice In Chains, Shit Garden- it all entered the mainstream and destroyed rock it seems nearly permanently. I stopped listening to anything current then. I'm still in the 1960s through 1980s although I would have to say there's been a scant few good things in the 2000s, but nothing revolutionary. No, I'll stick with the classic and the obscure.

Benjamin Blake Mitchner Everyone on youtube thinks "good music" ended around the time their 20s did, whether that be the 80s, the 90s or last week. You know what you like... good for you. But don't imagine that equates to anything objective or absolute.

@Electricshock, You make a very good point, the best music of your life is generally from the few years just before you have to get responsible. While I agree with you, I agree with the OP because in the late 90s, the computers took over and a lack of talent or vocal ability can be overcome with over production. Like Ben Folds says in Rockin the Suburbs, "Some producer with computers mixes all my shitty tracks these days."
