    Some 27 years after the abolition of apartheid, there are still communities of white South Africans who refuse to mix with their black fellow citizens. It's the case in the town of Orania, where the only language spoken is Afrikaans, the tongue of the first Dutch settlers. In Orania's schools, students are taught an alternative version of history. Our colleagues from France 2 report, with FRANCE 24's James Vasina.
    A programme preapred by Patrick Lovett and Gaëlle Essoo.

      kamvajnr dj mhluzi The difference is in black only towns any race can live there. You can’t live in Orania even if you are a rich, well known black person, with no criminal record. You can’t go there if you are Asian or mixed-race either. In a country which is supposed to be majority black. Never anywhere in Europe, would you ever get anything like this. That’s why, a lot of people have issues with it.

Tell me the statistics of black on white killings since the end of apartheid. There is a huge security issue in SA totally mishandled by the ANC but using the word genocide in this way is disingenuous and makes a mockery of the term. By the way I used to live in London and I used to go to Brixton. In recent years it's been taking over by white hipsters. Now that is what I call gentrification :-)

    I've actually been through here as a black South African and the black people there say they feel safer than they do in the city and everyone was friendly to me at least. Also we have loads of black only communities much bigger than this. I'm not sure if others had bad experiences here but I felt extremely safe and my business was welcomed while passing through so personally I can't say anything bad about it

    • @memecusmaximus4880
      @memecusmaximus4880 2 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      @@ryanmiller3126 It's mostly the townships where you have big settlements of black people. Sometimes you find a white or Asian person here or there but it's mostly black however going there as a non black person isn't bad in some places although you'd have to be careful because of the crime. The sad thing is South Africa as a whole is failing. I'm lucky and I'm doing well as a black person but for all races there is a lot of struggle. The government steals a crazy amount of money constantly and no one is held accountable. Crime is extreme and affects blacks Whites Asians it doesn't matter. Basically you have a tiny portion of the population that's doing really well white and black and majority are struggling to get by. In the area I live in there are loads of homeless people of all races and things don't seem to be improving. I truly believe that unless the government changes south Africa will get worse and worse. Many times the people that argue against this are the ones that are doing well and are unaware of the suffering of everyone around them. It's actually really sad because apartheid is over I have many friends of different races that are as close as family for me but it's horrible living in a society where crime is rampant and you have to worry about your loved ones. South Africa should be the wakanda of the world by now but other African countries have learned from their past mistakes and are rising while we fall further and further behind. There are still loads of wonderful places and it's a beautiful country but it's sad to see area after area become horrible and there's areas here that used to be safe where no one wants to go regardless of race so I hope people start seeing that and start turning things around. To be real I feel that if America loses the 2nd amendment it won't be long before things start going the same way because here criminals can get guns extremely easily but getting a gun legally as a citizen is difficult unless you pay someone off. Towns like this in the video actually end up safer than most other towns and in the bigger cities we rely far more on private security than we do police but luckily a lot of the old police the Afrikaans guys have started security companies and when you're affected by crime even as a black person those are the people you want helping you. If you're ever planning to visit South Africa I'd suggest going to Cape Town and the western cape, technically it's listed as more dangerous but that's because of the crime that takes place far away from the main hub of Cape Town so in general its much safer and is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

      @@memecusmaximus4880 thank you for your well explained information. It seems that the situation you are explaining is similar to many other places in the world: it’s not really the people that are the problem, it’s the fact that government is wasteful and corrupt (whether overtly or otherwise) and money rules all. Those outside the rule of law (criminals, politicians, big business) get to live fat and happy, while nearly everyone else struggles to some degree. Some struggle massively
      And as far as this report/video, it is made for Western audiences, so of course they play up the racism angle to try to constantly divide the people. Our true source of power is together. As long as the powers that be can keep us fighting each other instead of them, all the better in their eyes

      How did you ever come up with that one ? Especially, with all of the inequality that America stands for.. You have apparently misspoke. But, I will gladly accommodate in enlightening your indubious ignorance. "It is the aire of White Supremacy, that is running, how it has always been ran." What, if I may ask, is dominated and is running rampant, by the Black Community, other than crime ? We , against our own will, built the foundation, from which others merely profited. And what you witness today, here in America, is only a continuum of a process that was instigated, long before you or I came into existence. We, like everyone else, are only part of an evolutionary dynamic. Part of a trajectory of misfortune for some and most certainly, a benefit for others. If you look deep into your history and you are with a moral compass, you should be ashamed. On the other hand, if that is not the sentiment felt, "GOD have mercy, on your soul."

    My parents lived in Orania. I've been there several times. This news report is so slanted. I can tell you from first hand experience that the people in Orania are very devout Christians and any insinuation that black people are anything less-than is blasphemous. They simply want to preserve their culture and be left alone. You can live there if you prove that you are an Afrikaaner. I met a German man who lived there - he taught himself Afrikaans at age 50 and embraced the culture - he was reviewed and allowed to live there. It's incredible how they've turned semi-desert area that gets into the high 40s into a functional, clean town.

Although we speak English we were welcomed with open arms and found it to be, safe, crime free and above all meticulously maintained and litter free. The people we spoke to just got on with what they were doing and were hard working and enterprising. If I raised the subject of politics, the conversation was tactfully steered away from the subject. White people are now the victims of a new apartheid in SA. It is called Black Economic Empowerment and Transformation and targets whites. Curiously, it has resulted in poor economic growth and soaring unemployment among black people- in short the exact opposite of what it is intended to achieve. Good on the people of Orania.

And this is because they were empowered. As a black person I'm not benefitting from all those things, majority we get our way through our experience and credentials. What you are talking about is only those who carry membership cards of the ruling party. The ruling party which is in place to protect capital interest. First negotiations for this country was between Anc elites and business elites. They made deals before the main negotiations. But we shouldn't call out black economic empowerment, which was largely driven by capital, as if there wasn't English Empowerment and later followed by Afrikaner Empowerment when they took one. Thinking was right everybody deserved to be empowered. English oppressed both blacks and Afrikaners put them in concentration camps. Later Afrikaner oppressed the blacks. After oppression every society comes our poor, disempowered and uneducated. It's a pity the BEE one is a scam. Made a few billionaires, somehow close to Anc and left out everybody else.

      South Africa is filled with culture and yet there has been the maintenance of culture preservation despite people of different cultures living together. For example, I'm a Christian and for my whole life I've been going to school with atheists, Muslim people, Hindi people and the list goes on but that hasn't changed my Christianity. I'm Xhosa and I've been living with Sotho people, Zulu people, Afrikaans people, Enlgish people and so on yet I've never seen anyone loose their culture because of being exposed to each other. Honestly, it's up to an individual to preserve their culture and it starts with whether you are happy with yourself and whether you take pride in who you are-building boarders cant do that for you. You haven't denied anything that was reported in the video which means it is accurate, you're complaining about things that you wish they mentioned...But respectfully...if that's what you believe then that's what you believe an you are entitled to your opinion...I just couldn't help but make a comment.

      @@afikax8933 I certainly wasn't confused. Identity and Culture are important. If they weren't There wouldn't have been protests over making Afrikaans the instruction language. You say that you have not seen someone lose their culture. Let's take the dismantling of institutions. Today there is a movement to remove Afrikaans from Stellenbosch. Further we have seen the removal of the Rhodes statue from Cape Town. These Institutions and Symbols are important parts to White South African cultures.
      Let's look to the United States where I currently live. Latinos move to the US from a number of countries in the Americas. Overtime these Latino communities lose their language. Second they lose their practices as they adapt to American culture. In successive generations, these communities dissolve. Most White Latinos do not identify as Latino within 2 generations.
      Culture is in constant flux and change, however in a society like South Africa, where the ANC desires to erase the symbols and institutions of the White Minority due to it's connection to colonialism, imperialism, and Apartheid, it is no wonder that some would desire to preserve their culture.

    • @afikax8933
      @afikax8933 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@silasbishop3055 I'm not saying that identity and culture aren't important to preserve...my point is the method through which you preserve your culture must be flexible for everyone but preserving your culture isn't a problem.
      Most of South Africa's best schools and universities are English/Afrikaans-this doesn't accommodate for reserving black culture in South Africa yet black people have managed to preserve their culture despite this-in such a way that it accomodate everyone else yet they make up approx.70% of South Africa's population. I think it's great that Afrikaans people want to preserve their culture because it forms a part of their identity but i just don''t think that isolating yourself from the rest of the world in the way that Orania has in South Africa is the way things should be done.
      In my South African passport the front page says that we all should be able to move across our country freely-i don''t think that everyone is welcome to go to Orania. I also feel like the ANC is trying to balance the power-distribution in South Africa hence inowadays it's more difficult for white people t find jobs but it's not that their trying to erase white culture or identity.
      I mean, if you calculate the percentage of wealth distribution in South Africa, white people who are the minority (like you said) dominate a significant amount of it. So my feel is that the ANC are trying to balance that and it feels as though they are erasing white culture but really their not. (I'm addressing the one gentleman who moved to Orania because of job-difficulties)
      Again, culture preservation isn't a problem-it's how you preserve it that matters because we live in a country full of people so we all do have to share. Nobody can be selfish...i feel like that's some idea of what democracy is

    Very poor piece of journalism, unbalanced and lacks research. For a French channel I'm astounded they do not know their own history. Afrikaaners are not just descendants of Dutch but French also, Huguenot refugees. Afrikaans became the language of the first settlers that included those people. Before some fool comes out talking kak, I'm not an Afrikaaner and I'm not black. It seems Orania has become yet another refuge that these people have sought since they have become marginalised, so let them build a community where there is mutual respect for humanity. As someone who has lived in that part of the world this region is far more complex than this slanted piece by France 24.

      Tf does their ancestry have to do with anything? They locked millions of black natives in open air prisons and held rights from them, that’s evil. Should Germans not demonize their Nazi ancestors? Should White Americans not be able to speak down on Confederates?

      Sean Rota I agree with the facts part but their ancestry isn’t relevant to the story. And this community isn’t marginalized, many White South Africans live their lives with very little social issues. They make the majority
      of the income in the country and they own most businesses and land. There are very few White townships and the ones that exist are often due to choice.

      @@dbclass2969 Ancestry may not be central to the story but if journalists are not called out on not doing proper research then what else are they going to be lazy about in such articles. No one is disputing where the majority of wealth lies, or the fact that apartheid oppressed black and coloured people. I protested against apartheid but that does not mean I support another form of racism.

      @@jasonpatel6562 again, because you leftists can't seem to understand... There were no native tribes in South Africa when the Dutch settled. After a presence was established by the Dutch, the Zulu tribe (and a few other taken over by the Zulu) pushed south to try and take over but failed. The Dutch settled on uninhabited lands... Unless you think all of Africa is only for "Africans". But let's not go down that road.

    The trouble is that redistribution of land programmes simply doesnt work. Zimbabwe demonstrated that when prosperous farms were suddenly given away to people who had absolutely zero idea about running such large farms.
    Many white farm owners returned later to discover that the crops they left behind had been allowed to rot in the ground, machinery had not been maintained so no longer worked, dairy cattle had largely all been slaughtered for food and property had been left to rack and ruin.
    Black africans are subsistence farmers and sadly if farms are simply given to them from the whites then South Africa will end up a third world nation like so many others. Where the West see TV footage of starving children.
    South Africa and Zimbabwe are two examples of countries that were once successful and prosperous but given over to the inexperienced africans results in them going to from bread baskets to dust bowls.
