The documentary was Brents downfall. Before it he got manager and had 74.3 percent of the board behind him (they hadn't seen it yet) but as soon as he gets the limelight it all falls apart for him

@Br Olsos Ok, with commentary, I said: YOU try pulling that off (attempting to do that) in a little studio (the budget was small for this show) surrounded by cameras and crew (adding pressure). Acting isn't just character acting (it's not all about accents and zany personas, being 'real' to a script is a skill and one which, I suspect, you couldn't do to nearly this level, or have ever attempted).

I think it helped that he envisioned and then wrote the show. David Brent is an amalgamation of many charcters that Gervais met so he already knows what he wants from the character and he probably did a retake of the scene until he got it right. The girl on the other end of the phone sounded mighty-fine. In fact she sounded a bit like that girl in season 2 that Gareth had a fling with...

    • @PeaceDweller

I had a boss exactly like Brent when I was doing telesales in my late teens (around the time this show aired), couldn't stop talking about himself and all his life achievements & talents not realising he was a 50 year old office manager for a double-glazing company earning £21k a year. Needless to say, I lasted longer than he did.
