When he did "She's the Serpent who guards the gates of hell" it brought a flood of nostalgia... of discovering Ricky Gervais and The Office as a kid, and then showing that episode to my school friends and all of us laughing. That song plus seeing that Ricky even got his old Brent haircut made me feel glad to see this video.

Gervais probably persuaded them it was going to be a huge hit on the back of the Office and Extras. But without Merchant, I think the plot and side characters are lacking. A shame because the music is good. I can see it being a cult hit in years to come.

When he walks into the studio he introduces himself “David Brent” before his act walks in. You should always introduce your talent as you want their name to stick in minds not yours. So funny and excellent writing.
I love how meta bits like this and the music video in The Office and the Staff Training episode are. It's Brent, but it's also Gervais saying - "yeah, I was a musician, and I could have been something", a nod to the Seona Dancing days.
