For me the genius of this scene is fact that it goes from quite promising to complete disaster in the space of less than 90 seconds. A tiny, but brilliant slice of both comedy and tragedy.
First scene I ever saw. Walked in on my dad watching it. He was mildly amused. My life changed.

The fact that Gervais isn't a trained actor, makes the genius of the show even more remarkable. His portrayal of David Brent might just be the finest achievement in the history of British television.
Agreed … and what makes it incredible is that he is not a very good actor (and that’s being kind) in most other things. He must have been made for that part.

I think he just played an exaggerated version of himself.
I think it helped that he envisioned and then wrote the show. David Brent is an amalgamation of many charcters that Gervais met so he already knows what he wants from the character and he probably did a retake of the scene until he got it right. The girl on the other end of the phone sounded mighty-fine. In fact she sounded a bit like that girl in season 2 that Gareth had a fling with...

The voice of the woman on the other end of this phone call sounds like the woman named Carol in the perfect date later on that Brent finally feel worthwhile.
