    Most people have had success with this video, but if you are one of the few who hasn’t, you may need a deeper carburetor cleaning. One example of that process can be found in another video of mine, here: th-cam.com/video/hoRi0-GNBuk/w-d-xo.html

    After my Lawn Boy died on me (like it seems to about every year), I used to have it repaired locally. Those guys charged $115 (they did pick up and deliver back), and I was getting tired of the routine. Went out and bought $11 worth of starter fluid and carburetor cleaner spray. It jumped right back to life! Thanks, Hans for putting me on the path...I appreciate it!

    I don't really comment on anything online. Thank you very much. i almost threw my lawnboy lawn mower. i bought it brand new but it stopped working after using it for 3 times. so the mower was sitting in my yard for more than 2 years. But today, before throwing it, I saw your video, and I should give it a try. I checked the oil, the gas tank, and air filter and sprayed it. And Wow! it worked. Thank you so much. I highly recommend it.

    I thought you were working on my mower - especially when you first whipped out the starting fluid! I've had EXACTLY the same problem. I'm on my way to pick up a can of carb cleaner to see if that will work.
    BTW, I did check the auto choke - perfect, and the visible throat of the carb. looked clean enough to eat off of. The fuel is fresh and flows freely from the tank. I really appreciate the video, and at least know I'll have tried everything before taking it to a shop or something.
    Thanks again!

    I purchased a 1972 Wheelhorse and was having that same issue. Being a mechanic in the military 1974-78 plus working on all of my own internal combustion engines 4,6,8 cylinders, 2 and 4 cycle, I thought i was a pretty good mechanic. This wheelhorse was driving me bonkers. After trying all of the steps that you did plus some of my own, it would run for a little while and then back to the rough running / idling. I decided to purchase.a carburetor. The carburetor was around $15.00 and when I PUT IT ON I COULD POP WHELLIES WITH THE TRACTOR! As cheap as these carbs are if you're stumped as I was purchase a new heart for your machine!

    I bought a lawn boy push mower on Saturday. Was impressed with the first pull start at the true-value store. Drove 90 miles home and unloaded. Started first pull. Mowed a bit, shut it off and it wouldn't even try to start. Next day it shuddered to start, smoked then ran. Another shut down and again won't start. Have done this 3 times.
    Right now it's in the pickup and going back to, argue with the store. I'm a 66 year old woman who can't keep doing this. Am glad I found your video, and will be buying the fluid and cleaner to try and have on hand. And most likely will try it, as stores don't like returns, when they only carry a few items.
    I really expected better of a new $300 machine. But reading reviews tonight, seems many of the new ones have the same issue 😩 Thanks for your video

    • @TractorHoarders
      @TractorHoarders  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sorry to hear of your troubles with your new mower. I would definitely not consider that normal and typically most stores would have a 30 day return policy. I would encourage you to invoke use of that and have them exchange your mower. It will be very irritating if you need to do this every time you need to mow. In addition, this method is fine for every once and a while, but if used regularly, it could cause premature wear of your internal engine components resulting in a shorter life-span of the engine. I would be discouraged to to deal with returning a mower to a store 90 miles away, but it may be best in the long run if you do.

      Also, if there is any chance that your gas is old or dirty, get rid of it and get fresh, clean gas. Sometimes the culprit can be inside of a contaminated gas container as well.

      Glad it helped! Many of the mower brands are made by just a few manufacturers. If you look at them, many also use the same engines. The main thing of importance though is not letting them sit with gas in them in the winter. At the end of your mowing season, try and run the engine until all of the gas is gone. Or, another easy option is just simply start the mower every 30 to 60 days and let it run a few minutes.

      Hi Beth, it sounds to me like your mower engine will require a more in depth carburetor cleaning. The exact items of importance are dependent on exactly which engine you have as carburetors are different. The principle is all the same though. It's going to need taken apart and every small passage cleaned out. An example of this is in my other video here: th-cam.com/video/hoRi0-GNBuk/w-d-xo.html

    My 10515 lost 3rd gear and is losing 2nd, with a rhythmic grinding preceding loss of gear. It still runs fine in first, but shifting is a bit stiff. I figure this is either a slipping pinion gear (in the trans, not the wheels) or shift keys, any idea which is more common or more likely? What are the most common and likely failures in the Lawn Boy 3 speed gearbox?
    I had the cover off and the ring gear looked good, I should have taken it out to look at the pinion while I was there, but regret assuming that the good looking ring gear meant the pinion must be good as well.

      @@TractorHoarders I found the problem. It was the output shaft bushing on the long axle side, which is also the 3rd gear side, wore out, allowing the input and output shafts to move apart and the gears to slip, in reverse order starting with 3rd. I got a new one off Ebay and replaced it. I had to sand the rust off the axle to get the old one off and the new one on. Lube was both old and cheap and was not clinging enough to ride up the gears and get to the bushings. Part #60-8770.

    • @TractorHoarders
      @TractorHoarders  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spray them both into the same spots. What you’re looking for is usually a circular intake into the carburetor. Many times the choke plate is visible inside of it.

  • @kevinb.1891
    @kevinb.1891 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Here’s is an easy way to help prevent/avoid this kind of problem...
    1. Use gasoline that is as close to being ethanol free as possible. Ethanol added to gasoline will shorten the life span of standing gas over long periods of time...the old gasoline will be insufficient to fire the spark plug. This is especially true for equipment that has sat idle from one season to the next... snow throwers to lawn mowers.
    2. Solution...Use a gasoline treatment stabilizer such as STA-BIL:FUEL STABILIZER TREATMENT added to your gas can. Once added and thoroughly mixed, the treated gas is then added to your equipments own gas tank. Now start the engine and let it run for several minutes so that the treated gas has a chance to go through the fuel system (carburetor and plug). You should now be in good condition for a one or two pull start the following season.
    3. If after doing this seasonal preparation you somehow are still experiencing starting problems...I would then follow the valuable recommendations as shown in the video!

    I've tried all of the above, plus replacing the spark plug and filter, cleaning out the carburetor, putting fresh gasoline in and it still wouldn't start. I suspect the ethanol-based gas could be gunking up the machine, too.

    • @TractorHoarders
      @TractorHoarders  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you use starting fluid, does it ever fire when trying to start it? I would start to question if it has spark. You can check by removing the spark plug, holding it the metal threads against the head bolts with the wire attached, and pull starting the engine? You should see a blue spark. If you don’t, it may be time to investigate the coil which is under the flywheel.

    • @TractorHoarders

If you can’t get it running and need to explore alternatives, check FB Marketplace. I can usually get used mowers that run for $40, so that’s just another thing to consider. Mavrick Singer If it’s brand new, I do very basic troubleshooting to ensure the spark plug wire is on, and the safety switches are operating, and that it has oil filled properly. Beyond that, return it and swap it out.

    Ura, you got lucky.. not everyone has a mower that clean and get it running on a third of a can of starting fluid.. same mower broken recoil rope, spring hi it trying to get running, then no spark, yada yada yada.. ready for the scrapper imo.. wtf roflmao

      I hear ya! They aren’t all easy. If it’s that bad, I’d scrap it too and find a cheap used one on Marketplace or Craigslist.

    20+ year lawnboy owner here. These are the biggest pieces of junk. Carbs are the worst, every other year carb needs to be rebuilt. I would never recommend buying and when it does fail to start, and it will happen just throw it away and cut your losses

      The new stuff is certainly not at all like the old Lawn Boys! I had some from the 70s and they were great machines.

    why do you keep looking around (glaring) everywhere. Really weird. Stay from in front of the camera...or deal with the camera.

    Are you spraying the carb cleaner and starter fluid in the same hole?
