The pseudo-hair point is actually so real, I love seeing that stuff with anthro characters that have long, fluffy ears. One favorite "pseudo body part" design choice I adore is when animals with no arms, specifically snakes in animation, are very creatively animated to use their coils to still make gestures humans would make. For example, in The Bad Guys, Mr. Snake lounges a majority of his body against a counter and it looks like he's draping his "arms" across the surface. It's so so fun how people can think of ways to make body language work like that!

Ok yeah I'm stealing that for my sona. My profile picture isn't the best example since the eyes are comprised of exactly 4 pixels, but trust me she has weird eyes
10:39 My personal favorite use of this trope comes from Tim Lockwood (a.k.a Flint Lockwoods Dad), where his eyes are obstructed by his massive unibrow; retaining his expressions and helping to compliment his mustache.
My favorite art trope is when a character looks scary (the term i would use is "a sheep in wolfs clothing) but is actually super sweet and nice. A example i would use is from an pixel indie horror game called "look outside", when we meet this character named hellen, there standing outside our door with this terrifying and imposing persences asking for a place to stay, letting them stay they can join our party and despite how scary she looks, shes a really nice and humble person, even tho shes a beefy 6 foot something giant wearing a hockymask and using a meatcleaver as a weapon.
for the second trope, the other name for this type of hair is having a "cowlick". you can also find these types of hairstyles as far back as the original little rascals tv series with a character named Alfalfa!
With the ahoge-adjacent hair idea, i find that when used can also display a level of messiness or instability in the mental and physical health of characters and while it's predominantly used in 2d and 3d art my favourite use of this in character design is with the character of Ted Lasso (the show is live action). A charter who is quite aloof and silly who's hair is often slicked back or playfully quaffed but whenever he's distressed or panicked will often have ahoge hair split from his hair's general shape. Its a great way of showing how he's faltering even while keeping his happy-go-lucky smile in place.
I love the cheated angle thing. I use it all the time. 17:46 Also with Mickey Mouse video game thing. Epic Mickey actually made the whole cheated angle work *in game* and it looks great. No matter which way Mickey or the camera is facing, his ears always hit the silhouette. It looks especially goofy when Mickey opens a chest. He spins around while looking up and it makes his ears go all over the place for a second.
I've seen this game and, not only does it look super fun, but you are right that the cheated angle looks great. However, I meant it would look bad SPECIFICALLY for Kingdom Hearts. Epic Mickey has an enforced camera angle focused on Mickey the whole time. Kingdom Hearts is a free-roaming game that can spin around Sora and Mickey acts as a companion rather than the main character. This different is really the deciding factor, lol.
FINALLY something like this! EVERYONEEEEEE does things they don't like, and I love that you do both things you don't like but ALSOOOO like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE the character foils trope, there’s something so human about it! Here’s one person who thinks one way, and here’s another person who doesn’t think that way, but the biggest difference is how the characters express it. The villain usually expresses their values over other people’s comfort or even free will, and the hero often takes issue with that.
The mixed media one is so fr, Gumball is an amazing example of it. Personally I was thinking a lot about Hobie Brown AKA spider-punk from atsv and how they animated him, it is truly fascinating and I don’t even wanna know how long it took to animate the guy. It’s not really mixed media but the way the animators threw over like “newspaper” over his model in scenes is so cool
23:48 I agree with this sooo much. One of my favorite animes Madoka Magica gets a lot of credit just because of that. The monsters called witches in the show are like collage and they use many different object cramped together into one design. A broom, an eye, a fork whatever makes sense for the witch will be used in it. And they are animated super weirdly like paper dolls sometimes. A very good example of this trope
was not expecting a Quantum leap reference lmao. Also when you said ahoge, i paused and looked at your avatar ,with 2 pieces of 'odd' hair, and thought: yeah that checks out." Great video.
For the last one, might I suggest, Kyubey, from Madoka Magica. A literal emotionless alien who considers feeling to be a mental disorder and turns middle school girls into child soldiers! Also the most adorable little thing who constantly sounds happy. (Also a lot of the witches in the show have mixed media too.)
Best example of trope 6. Gumball. The Amazing World of Gumball. Case in point. Just look at a render of the main cast, you have 2d and 3d animation, claymation, an actual live actor that’s photoshopped. It’s mixing so many concepts for different styles and it’s impressive
WAS SO SURPISED TO SEE AMERICA IN 6:08 WHAT??? It's such a rare treat to see hetalia in any media nowadays so like thanks for bringing my hopes up that hetalia is not yet dead
Adore the hair tropes you included. They’re so fun to utilize. I have characters with stardust hair. Characters with feather hair. Characters with icicle hair. One of my other ocs has two loose strands right on top of her head as well. Also adore cute villains (Cozy Glow included). I’m also a sucker for “back to camera” and other pose centric art tropes. It’s so good.
this made for a GREAT background video to listen to while working on my reference for my one of my ocs, a plant person with stem pseudo-hair and who uses his friendly big brother exterior to hide his true intentions and cold, scheming side from those around him :3 it was very validating to see enjoyment for the tropes i also enjoy and employ while actively working with them!
I just finished watching the other tropes vid (I'm commenting here cuz this was the vid that introduced me to your channel), and I just wanted to say I LOVE your avatar, the expressions, the art style, the design in general. I'm also a big fan of how expressive it is through their hand hand gestures, a lot of time it can feel like people's avatars for vids like this are very static, but yours's feels way more alive and energetic. The vids themselves were good too btw, I just really wanted to compliment that aspect of them, I swear I was hypnotized lmao
I love this! It's always nice seeing more positivity put out in the TH-cam space, somewhere that's known for being pretty viscous to anything it can be, really.
One of my favorite ways to play with eyes on character designs is how/when they appear. I’m working on this character design who’s essentially just a wooden puppet, like one of those ones you use for drawing anatomy. No facial features or anything. But he wears this giant hat that casts a shadow over his head and in that shadow you can see his eyes and sometimes his mouth. It’s genuinely one of my favorite designs so far and there’s something so fun with having facial features appear only in specific circumstances
I regret looking up what the morse code on your sona's top spells- Lovely video! These are all super fun and cool tropes, you have very good taste and are a very skilled artist! :)
My favorite character with hidden eyes has to be Falin Touden from Dungeon Meshi. It gives her such a subtle, chill and tired vibe and then when they reveal her eyes you know stuff’s going down.
Covered eyes is one of my own favorite character trope and there's a lot of characters I like that have that trope There's Fred from Hamster and Gretel, which is honestly the best character design in that show to me. The tinted glasses with the angular hair covering the face signify her introverted independent and brutally honest personality- but also she tints everything from her own worldview. She's like a casual Daria or Daria and Jane put together, she is supposedly a "nihlist" but is just open enough. She's also tough and goes with the flow. She's very aware this is all a persona as well. There's an episode where she has to talk to someone (the bad guy lol) to help interpret her chaotic and cryptic dream, showing how she might overanalyze and repress and how this persona is also a coping mecanism the controlled apathy is as much as "toxic positivity" is. Her foil- her friend and cousin Kevin is someone who is not put together, overreacts- is a loser in life and the way he looks next to her showcases a cool dynamic I like There is also Nicky Little from Pepper Ann, I really like her character. Usually her hair is covering one side of her face as well (I think the opposite of Fred's actually) and she is sort of the direct opposite of Fred trope wise, not casual- not well spoken all the time- in household that focuses a lot on merit she has to keep up- she is a preppy nerd but is still young. However when things go wrong she can can get crabby and have aggressive outbursts. Her design reflects her very well, fits her voice really well. "Book smart but not street/social smart" Not really considered a pathetic loser like the other two might be but someone who is overall seen as sheltered and naive if anythingthat isnt academics or other stuff. Has repressed fear of swans and is very opinonated but its usually stuff her parents brought to her. Has an interest in the x files that's only brought up once for a gag showing how she is private. The hair is drawn in a squiggly style with cowlick at the top. Her hair sometimes moves when showing affection and hugging but we rarely see the other eye. Everything just works so seemlessly for the characters. What I love about both of these designs as they do so much, they are so specific as characters and their designs do a lot of work of communicating who they are. One side hair my beloved
I genuinely love watching your videos and sitting down to draw, also just thought I would say everything I drew while this video I DREW SHADOW FAN PAGGEEEEEEEE
I myself like to make art/characters and narratives. while i don't really have any real skill in the sense of actual digital artwork and drawing, i found my creativity being stimulated in a modeling tool that you use for makeing tabletop mini's. ive made a fair few models, but funnily enough i do like a fair few of the tropes that you explained, mainly nr. 1, 3 and 5. Most strikeing design ive made so far is actually my interpritations of the 7 deadly sins, they are actual physical entities that are sentient and well act like gods. They are also however part of a greater whole, while they themselves are much more then just their sin. The sins that stand out the most is my sin of gluttony, sloth, lust, envy and wrath. As these sins are still linked to the sin but in relaively unique ways. The most recent of said sins i made into a entity is lust, it is a tall and well attractive demonic woman (i know abit of a cliche), yet she wears this great headdress that covers her eyes while having a glow of said eyes, to well give an idea of where her eyes are. It is all hard for me to explain properly. But i do think another thing that could be added is alot of character (apart from backstory) can be told in how said character poses, how their express themselves (facial expression), deminor, stance and mannerisms can be disearned from just a static image of them (plus i do also like to imagine both smell and potentialy a voice they might speak with). Either way very cool video :)
One of my favourite examples of a really exaggerated ahoge is definitely Mephisto from blue exorcist, its just so unnecessarily huge but adds so much to his goofy personality
One of my favorite mask characters is Shy Guy from the Super Mario games! It gives the same vibes as Pyro does, where you can find em cute or creepily evil depending of the situation. Heck! When Shy guy loses on the latest Mario Strickers you can FEEL how Shy Guy is planing to kill everyone on that match
Returning fan The more you spoke during this the more I loved listening to you speak, because between "I think about goofy a lot partially cause of character design and partially because he's hot" and "My favorite mixed media is Gumball" and "Grell is my queen", and many other things, I kept thinking "I hope they bring this up" and then you did, and kept giving opinions like that that I just super agree with cause like- Yes. And also props to the Cotl ost playing in the background! Thanks for the video! I did watch it while playing minecraft. I've been caving
I'm relatively new to actually trying to draw people and watching this has motivated me to pick up my current project. I'm practicing human proportions so that when I finally do more cartoon style art (the style I want to do) their proportions are wrong on purpose and not because I always draw the legs too short. I will however use the cartoon style to hide the fact that I can't draw hands. Thank you for the motivation and inspiration
Mixed media is so inspiring to me, especially when it comes to animation. It always just makes the whole thing so special and sometimes pretty chaotic in the best way possible. I love seeing all these experiments and the qualities of all these different techniques and materials. I think a good example of this (which i really like) is the indie game ‘AntonBlast’ by SummitSphere. It is very 90s cartoon inspired (think cow & chicken, ren & stimpy, and let’s also throw chrash bandicoot in the mix) but it just throws random mixed media pieces in there whenever it wants. It goes from random png’s to partially 3D rendered characters (I also really love the rest of the visual style of it, it is absolutely crazy). But the best thing i think is that everything gets pixelated because it is a pixel art based game. It’s very good! Also really like this video, it is refreshing to see someone talk about things they like. The visuals are also nice!
aaa I loved the video! I find all these topics really really interesting, thank you for expanding on them :D Also, I was really really hoping you'd mention Pyro when talking about characters with covered faces!!! I absolutely love how they kept the mask and how mysterious and cute it comes off
27:03 the beauty is that it’s very very episodic (with a few exceptions) and it you’re not feeling an episode you can most often skip right to the next one
One of my favorite examples of the mixed media trope is “Bocchi The Rock!” Live action footage, janky 3d animation, paper puppets, and a bunch of different 2d styles pop up sporadically throughout the anime, and to great (and often hilarious) effect. Not only is it used for aesthetic purposes, but for storytelling purposes as well. These sequences are often used emphasize Hitori’s anxious spirals. And as someone with really bad anxiety, I can confidently say that I have never seen anything perfectly encapsulate the absolute chaos of an anxious mind than these sequences do.
I love the use of hair covering an eye or both eyes. My favourite example is Volo in PLA, how in his regular design he has one eye covered, and when he shows his true colours, both eyes are shown. I also love how it’s used to the complete opposite effect for Arven because it’s to show his shyness, and we love him for it haha. I also love the stray strand of hair, I’ve used it in a couple of CBC and I make it longer and longer just because I can haha. Mucking around with it is so fun in composition too aaaaa
hi, i have discovered you today with your ''art tropes that annoy me video'' i am an artist that recently started a HUGE fantasy project and i am shit at drawing humans rn XD but regardless, you gave me very good ideas and ways to improve myself greatly, thank you and keeep up the good videos! :]
I have been waiting for this for EVER, so glad it actualy happened! Bubbs art tropes I hate video is actualy the one (among with others) is the one that drew me into her amazing channel, and the effort she put's into these video's is amazing! So subscribe if you haven't already, she's amazing
i love it sm when people just talk about things they love, idk it just makes me so happy yk!! its such a breathe of fresh air from all the negative videos on youtube, pls keep making videos, i love positive passionate yapping sm 🫶
15:27 I actually combined this idea with the ahoge thing for my own avatar to show which direction I'm looking in even if my face isn't visible. I wanted it to have a recognizable silhouette kind of like Mickey mouse.
On the trope 6 topic. There is this old russian cartoon called Elka (Элька) that mixes 2d and 3d really nice for a 2007 movie made in a studio with close to zero expirience with this type of thing. They use 3d for robots and machines and it's creepy, but it works because they supposed to be creepy because it's a creation of a villain. They also change art style for some songs, and use 3d to show an old computer game. Loved this silly thing about silly bear since I was a child.
On the topic of the last trope you mentioned. I also LOVE the opposite. Having this big opposing evil looking character be the most happy or nice person ever, it's not only A hilarious trope it's also charming as all get up. :3
For the cheated angles I really love using Varian from the tangled series as an example cause he has a big piece of hair in the front with a blue streak in It but from wherever the camera angle is you can always see the blue streak which I love
not the random quantum leap clip at the end- sam quantum leap beckett, my beloved (i still need to continue watching the 1990's onee, im still heartbroken about the cancellation of the new one D:)
studying so I can make sure my art might actually be good to at least one person edit: seems I pass the test, as I use all of these (especially the third) extremely frequently, and even sometimes invert the 5th and 7th so instead the antagonist is concerningly similar the the protagonist or a character who’s actually very sympathetic looks extremely threatening
28:00 WHEATLEY. OMG HES JUST A LITTLE GUYS WHO LITTERALY CANT DO ANYTHING granted when he IS evil he has GLaDOS's giant body but still, he was so proud of himself cause he was made to be a moron, and was called a moron basically his entire life and still he did it "i did this, TINY LITTLE WHEATLEY DID THIS" hes not very intimidating either. Well i think i just write thus comment bc im obsessed with portal and people dont talk abt it enough BUT STILL WHEATLEY DESERVED THAT GUYS BRING HIM BACK PUHLEASE AND THE PORTAL FANDOM IM JUST LONELY THANKS FOR READING MY COMMENT
I was so pleasantly surprised by how many tropes I agreed with in this vid HAHA I thought our aesthetics were really different but I guess not LOL I was whooping and yahooing with every trope reveal like YEAHHH ME TOO MANNN 🤝 The psuedo hair, ahoge, covered eyes, even Cheated angles ???? I was FEASTING 🙏🏽 Ty for such banger takes Especially with trope 4 bc I always cheat my designs when I'm drawing them because I love keeping their shapes and silhouette intact at all times, but most of the time it's not really recommended in most art vids because it's "doesn't make sense" or it's "not realistic" so hearing you say "cheating to keep a consistent silhouette is admirable" makes me shed a comically large tear bless your heart 🥲 And I thought it would stop there but NO, like every other trope you mentioned like mix media (an example *I* really like is Chowder 🤭 it's not often as AwoG but when it does it packs a PUNCH!) and contrasting designs for pro/an tags, just *chef kiss* ~ I thought for a sec with that last one I was neutral on it but then you mentioned pkmn and my boy Litwick ??? AND Darla ???? F L O W E Y. It was a wrap LMAO like YESSIRRR 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 It was such a delight watching this vid, and you explained each trope so incredibly well and why they're so appealing with such great examples !!! Like 10/10 my liege o7 Awesome work :3 💛 and such a nice chill vid too 🥰
Adjacent to trope 3, character designs where only the eyes aren't hidden in shadow is so, so cool. TOH did it a few times with Belos, specifically the first time he's shown using the palismen in season 1, and I'm obsessed with Slay The Princess right now, who did it with The Long Quiet. In both cases, it's intended to be scary, and it works so well.
1. Pseudo-Hair: One of my favorite examples to this are the gem hairs from Land of the Lustrous. They are basically the center of every gem's design. And they're so beautiful in the anime... 2. Ahoge: I like it, specially when it's in a shape that pertains to the character's personality (i. e. a heart or a lightning bolt). One pretty unique use of this I saw is Yoshi from Nagatoro, who had an Ahoge that grew bigger and bigger through the course of the series. (I've never actually read the series, I just saw this on social media and found it hilarious) 3.Mystery eyes: My favourite examples of this are "living glasses" (when the glasses morph in order to convey emotions), and when hiding an eye actually conceals some kind of power inside the character. 4. Cheated angle and 5. Oppositagonists These ones are just cool, not much to say about them. 6. Mixed Media Madness: I adore mixed media! Favourite example is when it's used on divine beings to show their otherworldliness. 7. Cute and evil: This trope is at its best when pushed to the extreme. A super cutesy, childlike character being one of the most vile, powerful, and terrifying forces of their world. Sugar from One Piece, Nui Harime from Kill la Kill, Pride from FMAB... A favourite design trope of mine are unique irises that represent the character's personality, affiliations etc. A mirror to the soul!
Oh my gosh the mysterious eyes thing is so real! There is a comic I’m reading and the whole thing of the second main character is he’s a big guy, part of like a gang and he always wears a mask in the shape of like a wolf. The only glimpses of his face that we see are goofy little shines in his eyes sometimes and I think one when his mask slipped up a little barely revealing anything, but it is so unbelievably evident that he’s a bad guy but not a bad person and he’s just got this mystery about him yet what we see in the comic is he’s just a little bit of a puppy with his body language and the few words he says! The comic is ‘the boy and the wolf’ you can read it on tapas. 10000/10 love it!
I-….i don’t know how to describe the feeling I have right now. Not only do we have fairly similar styles BUT BLACK BUTLER WAS ALSO MY FIRST ANIME?!?! Man that’s just crazy- I also agree with all of these tropes being the bomb because they rule- I just love when characters have little boopies and things wrong in general with their design. I defenitly try to add those to my own characters as well XD
I LOVED that she talked about TAWOG! It's my favorite (mixed media) show and it's a good example of ALMOST EVERY style. Karen Comments has no complaints
The ahoge is so real because I use it all the time on all of my characters which I think I should probably slow down on that but I just think it makes their hairstyle look complete, I love how it can also vary in shape too like a heart or a lightning bolt. I also think it can be useful for showing expressions, like if the character is happy then it sticks up or when their sad it drops down or when they look at something they love it changes shape. I use it so much I can’t see my oc or character without it the top of their head just feels empty without it 😭
The “little imperfection” thing is what saved the character design for my OC Egg. If you want an idea of Egg, just think of the autism creature with an egg shaped head and a body. That’s all he was for a long time. But I realized, even though looking generic and monotone was part of his comedic appeal, he looked a little *too* generic. So, since he’s an egg who floated endlessly in the void of space for years before the story, I gave him a busted-in crack on the right side of his head, with the logic he was hit by the remains of an asteroid or space junk or something. Just one tiny detail completely makes the design, and communicated a part of his backstory, making him more sympathetic. Just a lil busted noggin

I love the Pseudo-Hair in Splatoon!
@@bubbs6969my headcanon is that mickey’s ears are spheres
FINALLY something like this! EVERYONEEEEEE does things they don't like, and I love that you do both things you don't like but ALSOOOO like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE the character foils trope, there’s something so human about it! Here’s one person who thinks one way, and here’s another person who doesn’t think that way, but the biggest difference is how the characters express it. The villain usually expresses their values over other people’s comfort or even free will, and the hero often takes issue with that.
10:51 the art version of his eyes darkened, but more wholesome
Positivity in the art sphere? I never thought I'd see the day.
The mixed media one is so fr, Gumball is an amazing example of it. Personally I was thinking a lot about Hobie Brown AKA spider-punk from atsv and how they animated him, it is truly fascinating and I don’t even wanna know how long it took to animate the guy. It’s not really mixed media but the way the animators threw over like “newspaper” over his model in scenes is so cool
i ADORE mixed media stuff... also ENA mention... and gumball mention....... very joyous video ... i agree...
I see the floating one, but where’s the second hair???
@@cosmicspacething3474 in the middle, slightly covering one eye.
11:54 THE MENTION OF SIX MADE ME SO HAPPY JUST THERE AAAA
WHEN YOU BROUGHT UP THE TOPIC OF HIDDEN EYES SHE WAS MY FIRST THOUGHT
Best example of trope 6. Gumball. The Amazing World of Gumball. Case in point. Just look at a render of the main cast, you have 2d and 3d animation, claymation, an actual live actor that’s photoshopped. It’s mixing so many concepts for different styles and it’s impressive
The Ahoge alfalfa has in little rascals is iconic
WAS SO SURPISED TO SEE AMERICA IN 6:08 WHAT??? It's such a rare treat to see hetalia in any media nowadays so like thanks for bringing my hopes up that hetalia is not yet dead
wdym America where the hell is the flag
Adore the hair tropes you included. They’re so fun to utilize. I have characters with stardust hair. Characters with feather hair. Characters with icicle hair. One of my other ocs has two loose strands right on top of her head as well. Also adore cute villains (Cozy Glow included). I’m also a sucker for “back to camera” and other pose centric art tropes. It’s so good.
I tried to draw my oc in Lackadaisy art style and I only made 4 different characters in 4 types hair styles
this made for a GREAT background video to listen to while working on my reference for my one of my ocs, a plant person with stem pseudo-hair and who uses his friendly big brother exterior to hide his true intentions and cold, scheming side from those around him :3 it was very validating to see enjoyment for the tropes i also enjoy and employ while actively working with them!
Absolutely love that you posted a video about stuff you *do* like! It's very rare to see that, props to you!!!
27:40 the entire time i was thinking "TAWOG, TAWOG, TAWOG!!" Lol!!
The vids themselves were good too btw, I just really wanted to compliment that aspect of them, I swear I was hypnotized lmao
for trope 6 i almost exploded until you mentioned TAWOG!!!
same
yeah
The theme tune from Ancient Magus' Bride playing in the background made me indescribably happy.
I regret looking up what the morse code on your sona's top spells-
Lovely video! These are all super fun and cool tropes, you have very good taste and are a very skilled artist! :)
My favorite character with hidden eyes has to be Falin Touden from Dungeon Meshi. It gives her such a subtle, chill and tired vibe and then when they reveal her eyes you know stuff’s going down.
my favorite art trope is when artist draw something and then i see it and i smile cause its really good
MINE TOO!

Always good to watch a Bubbs video, I love your opinions and your videos are cozy in their fun way! A true inspiration!
Covered eyes is one of my own favorite character trope and there's a lot of characters I like that have that trope
There's Fred from Hamster and Gretel, which is honestly the best character design in that show to me. Her foil- her friend and cousin Kevin is someone who is not put together, overreacts- is a loser in life and the way he looks next to her showcases a cool dynamic I like
There is also Nicky Little from Pepper Ann, I really like her character.
YESSSS I love mixed media animation so much!! It’s my dream to someday make a horror series where each episode is a different style of animation! :D
I loved the cozy glow great villain recognition, and the talking sprites a bangin.
It also makes the serious scenes with him very unserious and i love that, i just cant stop looking at the giant curly-cue on the top of his head
Returning fan
The more you spoke during this the more I loved listening to you speak, because between "I think about goofy a lot partially cause of character design and partially because he's hot" and "My favorite mixed media is Gumball" and "Grell is my queen", and many other things, I kept thinking "I hope they bring this up" and then you did, and kept giving opinions like that that I just super agree with cause like-
Yes.
And also props to the Cotl ost playing in the background!
Thanks for the video! I did watch it while playing minecraft. I've been caving
This is the first time ive watched any of your videos but for some reason, you give off both lavendertowne and Welcome to the Wayne vibes
Ngl it’s really cool to see you( art version) and see the various art tidbits you like actuality apart of
The fact that I unironically have an oc that fits the 1,2,3,4 and 7 tropes.
Pseudo-hair, ahoge, hidden eyes, cheated angle, cute and evil.
Its a blessing that i finished watching your video about art tropes you hate and then i get recomended video about aet tropes you like 🎉❤️
aaa I loved the video! I find all these topics really really interesting, thank you for expanding on them :D
Also, I was really really hoping you'd mention Pyro when talking about characters with covered faces!!!
Love that you put the names of the songs playing throughout the video.
I love watching videos like this. It’s nice to see the artists I like favorite art tropes are.
32:24 yes I did finish a dc scarecrow sketch
I love the use of hair covering an eye or both eyes. My favourite example is Volo in PLA, how in his regular design he has one eye covered, and when he shows his true colours, both eyes are shown. I also love how it’s used to the complete opposite effect for Arven because it’s to show his shyness, and we love him for it haha.
I also love the stray strand of hair, I’ve used it in a couple of CBC and I make it longer and longer just because I can haha. Mucking around with it is so fun in composition too aaaaa
WAKE UP NEW BUBBS VIDEO JUST DROPPED !!!!!
5:40 the fact that I didn't look but said yes and then immediately that happened terrified me 😭
Oh, I absolutely love a lot of them too! Though the mysterious eyes is my favourite by far.
FUCK YEAH RAMSHACKLE MENTIONED I LOVE THE CHARACTER DESIGNS FOR THAT SO MUCH!!!!! Stones my fav :D
Following for your style because dear lord it's beautiful
GENUINELY kicked my feet when zato showed up my bbg i looooooove him. Also happy you did a positive version of this!! We need more positivity heha
hi, i have discovered you today with your ''art tropes that annoy me video'' i am an artist that recently started a HUGE fantasy project and i am shit at drawing humans rn XD but regardless, you gave me very good ideas and ways to improve myself greatly, thank you and keeep up the good videos! :]
For the cute and evil trope my favorite example would have to be "Also, I brought this dynamyte, goodbye!"
I have been waiting for this for EVER, so glad it actualy happened! Bubbs art tropes I hate video is actualy the one (among with others) is the one that drew me into her amazing channel, and the effort she put's into these video's is amazing! So subscribe if you haven't already, she's amazing
1:24 Are you sure?
Thank you for the video to watch while painting paper flowers
i love it sm when people just talk about things they love, idk it just makes me so happy yk!! its such a breathe of fresh air from all the negative videos on youtube, pls keep making videos, i love positive passionate yapping sm 🫶
I love your art style and your videos
15:27 I actually combined this idea with the ahoge thing for my own avatar to show which direction I'm looking in even if my face isn't visible. I wanted it to have a recognizable silhouette kind of like Mickey mouse.
I've never been the first person before, huh. Anyways, your art is amazing, and I like to hear you talk as well :)
Loved this silly thing about silly bear since I was a child.
i absolutely ADORE your art dudeeee
u kinda remind me of LavenderTowne
On the topic of the last trope you mentioned. I also LOVE the opposite. Having this big opposing evil looking character be the most happy or nice person ever,
it's not only A hilarious trope it's also charming as all get up. :3
I love that you mentioned eyebrows in the ahoge section considering I have an eyebrow cowlick
For the cheated angles I really love using Varian from the tangled series as an example cause he has a big piece of hair in the front with a blue streak in It but from wherever the camera angle is you can always see the blue streak which I love
At 11:05 i literally screamed when i saw Spy from tf2
13:40 I also screamed here
@@mandypaquette9665 I also screamed
I also love the ahoge! Love character designs with it!
not the random quantum leap clip at the end- sam quantum leap beckett, my beloved (i still need to continue watching the 1990's onee, im still heartbroken about the cancellation of the new one D:)
So glad I stumbled upon this account ☺️
studying so I can make sure my art might actually be good to at least one person
edit: seems I pass the test, as I use all of these (especially the third) extremely frequently, and even sometimes invert the 5th and 7th so instead the antagonist is concerningly similar the the protagonist or a character who’s actually very sympathetic looks extremely threatening
YES A PORTAL REFERENCE!! 😀 I so agree though (and obscure fandoms for the win!!)
I need to ask this seriously: ARE. YOU. MY. TWIN.
seriously I need more portal recognition omg. I got so excited when I saw this comment.
Video was really good and got me ignoring the fact that I'm still awake at 2AM
By your definition, basically all my hair is a ahoge-
I was so pleasantly surprised by how many tropes I agreed with in this vid HAHA I thought our aesthetics were really different but I guess not LOL I was whooping and yahooing with every trope reveal like YEAHHH ME TOO MANNN 🤝 The psuedo hair, ahoge, covered eyes, even Cheated angles ???? I was FEASTING 🙏🏽 Ty for such banger takes
Especially with trope 4 bc I always cheat my designs when I'm drawing them because I love keeping their shapes and silhouette intact at all times, but most of the time it's not really recommended in most art vids because it's "doesn't make sense" or it's "not realistic" so hearing you say "cheating to keep a consistent silhouette is admirable" makes me shed a comically large tear bless your heart 🥲
And I thought it would stop there but NO, like every other trope you mentioned like mix media (an example *I* really like is Chowder 🤭 it's not often as AwoG but when it does it packs a PUNCH!) and contrasting designs for pro/an tags, just *chef kiss* ~
I thought for a sec with that last one I was neutral on it but then you mentioned pkmn and my boy Litwick ???
1. Pseudo-Hair:
One of my favorite examples to this are the gem hairs from Land of the Lustrous. They are basically the center of every gem's design.
And they're so beautiful in the anime...
2. Ahoge:
I like it, specially when it's in a shape that pertains to the character's personality (i. e. a heart or a lightning bolt).
One pretty unique use of this I saw is Yoshi from Nagatoro, who had an Ahoge that grew bigger and bigger through the course of the series. (I've never actually read the series, I just saw this on social media and found it hilarious)
3.Mystery eyes:
My favourite examples of this are "living glasses" (when the glasses morph in order to convey emotions), and when hiding an eye actually conceals some kind of power inside the character.
4. Cheated angle and 5. Oppositagonists
These ones are just cool, not much to say about them.
6. Mixed Media Madness:
I adore mixed media!
Favourite example is when it's used on divine beings to show their otherworldliness.
7. Cute and evil:
This trope is at its best when pushed to the extreme.
"or people who really relate to that one oingo boingo song" if yk yk i gotta steal this
The song for trope seven made me nostalgic- I LOVE SPORE
I-….i don’t know how to describe the feeling I have right now. Not only do we have fairly similar styles BUT BLACK BUTLER WAS ALSO MY FIRST ANIME?!?! Man that’s just crazy- I also agree with all of these tropes being the bomb because they rule- I just love when characters have little boopies and things wrong in general with their design. I defenitly try to add those to my own characters as well XD
pseudo hair my beloved (SIDON AND TEBA FEATURE???? yeah i can thoroughly stand beside this
I LOVED that she talked about TAWOG!
I use it so much I can’t see my oc or character without it the top of their head just feels empty without it 😭
God bless you🫶 (the lil’hair poofys✋🏼😭✋🏼)
