Mammals have nipples. With one notable exception, mammals do not have two nipples near the top of their chest with fat deposits under them. I don't see the point in talking about why lizard people wouldn't need them since they don't nurse their young given that humans don't need those lumps of fat when they nurse their young either. Sure if they had mammories in the same place while they're nursing they might resemble boobs, but that's not how it is for most characters. Also, talking about mammals specifically is only an issue with fantasy where there's races of intelligent animals. If there's some alien that has scales or feathers, that's no reason to assume they don't nurse their young.

my gripe with fictional boobs is so evolved it even extends beyond the inexplicable riddies (reptile tiddies) and loops back around to frowning at even mammalian boobs lmao. because humans are kind of outlying freaks for having such gigantic bongaloos *all the time*, rather than just when they're actually needed for milk. most other animals (including a lot of other primates!) tend to have flatter, if not outright flat tits when they don't actively have young. it's almost like having big chesticles is really inconvenient and counterintuitive to the whole Spine situation we have going on. so why, on even the reasonably-boobed beasts, are they always BIG ole honkers?? like sure humans specifically evolved for them to be for display/attracting mates. Fine. that's our deal. but hardly any other bipedal things do, so clearly this is Not the Norm! make your mammalian alien female flat chested you horny coward!! or at least like explain the bohongalos!!

In my setting sentient anthro sharks have boobs for a pretty specific reason: Sea Goddess created them that way. Because she was jealous of whatever Forest Goddess' creations were doing. So she made her own twisted copycat, basically.

If you can read full comics with no words. Can't people also read a comic with 'too' many words? Imagine telling an author of picture books they would be better off making comics because there book has 'too' many pictures? Does that make there book automatically a comic? Like its a valid opinion either way but it makes no sense to dictate your A R T by someone else's idea of your chosen art form.

Sexual Dimorphism part was on point - The industry especially video games are TERRIBLE at this. Especially with non-human species. The female is always smaller, less violent looking completely missing the point that its literally a different species, its not human. You can have races where the females are bigger and stronger than the males, this literally happens in nature. Yet pretty much 0 video game, fantasy races, etc ever do this the female version of the race is always prettified or less muscular similar to humans

there is a degree of convergent evolution that would indeed result in, a pretty good chance that, other inteligent life out there, would be similar, bipedal with arms for making tools and so forth, but yeah they don't need to be space elves, you can still very much reshape a bipedal form with good arms and make something that looks different, hilariously mechs are a somewhat good example of that. Also that's specifically for more grounded sci-fi, if you have soft sci-fi or sci-fantasy where ''Fuck you i do what i want'' you can than even do whatever, have a race of fish that breeds animals to create biotech because they can't start a fire underwater

i totally get trope 5, sure i love a bit of anthro and human looking aliens but i agree it can get really boring and repetitive! i actually have an alien oc that happens to fall under this trope but for a very good reason! hes taken refuge on earth for a lot of reasons that i havent super fleshed out yet but his species actually harms humans, mainly from secreting a soap-like ooze thats fumes are extremely toxic to most living creatures (due to being a prey species) so he has to sort of take human blood and such to create a human-esc disguise so he wont harm the planet and its inhabitants! (yes this was just an excuse to explain my cool oc and their species)

I'm currently creating a fantasy world, and all these little tips are very helpful for creating races! And don't worry, all the species and the way they are get explained by the lore, which can be summed up to "the gods are idiots and they don't know what they're doing"

with the anthro thing people lean twords the more human aspect. meaning getting as close to human autonomy as possible. if this ISNT something that you like i would recommend 'half anthro' . which is when someone just stands a animal up on their hand legs and call it a day. they only sacrifice some things to get the animal upright so it still classifies as anthro but is still closer to the animals autonomy

22:00 Bit of an unrelated NERD talk, but I actually have an entire setting that revolves around this explanation - there are 14 (technically 15, but the 15th was made synthetically by aliens) species in what is known as "humanoid space." Twelve of the 12 are so similar that they're indistinguishable from each other - bar extremely minor features like "women having beards on the snow world" or "humans on the dark world needing sunglasses while on other planets." The 12 species are, as implied, all human despite having completely different origins. The other 2 are based on common UFO pop culture - greys, reptilians, and the ones created by other humans are cat people (less furries and more Captain Amelia). The problem is that this is 15 of hundreds of known species, and they're all pretty close to each other. So a major point of the setting is that nobody knows what happened and everyone who cares is trying to figure out why. The other aliens (that I have described) are all specevo projects of varying realism. (My favorite are a species of tripod parasites that evolved "intelligence" to better defend and take care of their herds - so they're actually much quicker to empathize with those outside their species than humans are). I say all of this because I agree. I wish we had more cool aliens rather than blue people. It's okay to have blue people sometimes, but science fiction is fiction - you can imagine so, so many cool aliens (even bipedal ones still aligned to our moral philosophies).

The onomatopoeia one; there's an episode of early days Spongebob, first season or two, where plankton tries to win over SpongeBob with a golden spatula. When he pulls it out, he verbally says "Shing, sparkle sparkle." Speaking both the onomatopoeia and the visual effect, as when he says these things, an unsheathing sound effect and two sparkle visual effects play. This small 3 or 4 second clip has lived rent free with me in my mind for about two decades now, and when I encounter someone using text for things that could be, and often are, shone- I sorta just always thought it was the same vein of comedy

If i have characters who are like centaurs but the horse part is dragon, would they be reptiles or mammals? That last point made me think about it, should i remove their breasts or their ability to lay eggs? Or can i just keep both, considering that these creatures were made in a lab and they technically are both mammals and reptiles at the same time? Also, in their world, shapeshifting exists and they are capable of transforming into normal humans or full dragons so does it not matter that much? Help ;-;

The aliens that I made in my own work directly I try to baste them all off of animals from the real world but try to make them completely unnatural or in human. Looking to try and give them an alien aesthetic and so far they came out amazing
