    Great video with a lot of mystery taken out of the processes as well as a lot of the excessive actions which I’m sure a lot of TH-camrs put in to make the process look much more difficult. Also great examples of using a flag and the impact they have. I think your editing of the bevel was certainly allowable, you didn’t remove it as such but made it look cleaner and tidier. I’m glad I’m not the only person who uses creased diffusers as my background.

    While I'm aware that wide angle lenses are commonly used for macro shoots, I'd still very much like to see a comparison between using an 18mm and a standard 100mm macro. Since you are heavily cropping the image, I suspect the main difference is you get a longer reflection with the wide angle. But using a macro lens with better optics will probably get rid of much of the chromatic abberation straight out of camera so you don't have to deal with it in post.

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good points! I shot this with the kit lens. A nice macro would be fantastic -- I'd like to see the comparison. Make sure to check my upcoming wine photography lesson for a similiar discussion. Cheers!

  • @lightroomblog
    @lightroomblog 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice tutorial Dustin. A way to speed up your masking edit on the additional lighting layers is to switch them to Lighten mode. Only the areas lighter than the underlying layer are revealed. You may not even need to do any masking. I use this on loads of different subjects (even houses).
    I think I'll be buying some lipstick this week..

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank-you! Since I only had a crisp dark edge on the side of the comp I was lighting -- lighten mode resulted in a lot of strange artifacts from the overexposed edges. I decided to just bite the bullet and do a true Normal mask mode. That's awesome you use this with houses, I love lighten blending mode with a true passion Cheers!

    Hi Dustin,
    I never saw such a high level of product photography. And also editing. I strive to approach to your level but I can't on this stage. Here is the issue. It's difficult to follow you as english is not my main language and my Photoshop skills are much lower then yours. So when you do something obvious for you in Photoshop -- you do it fast as it doesn't seem worth attention for you. It's such a bummer I cant follow you in layers, masks, etc.
    Could you make just one video where you explain everything like you explain it for a very slow person? Just for guys like me to get the main principle of your work. On how you put one frame as a layer over the previous layer and masks and how it's mixed up together... It would be awesome!!!
    We sell in the I-net platforms on hight key and I do photos myself. The product is thread ladies' handbags, backpacks and stuff like that. Not the best objects for shooting as you can't see any glossiness on it like on the plastic or leather mathirial. So I need to make it on white background with it's reflection on plexi. Without reflection it doesn't look as beautiful as in real life.
    Wheather you gonna make such "slow" video or not I still admire your work, wish you best luck and having orders from the best brands!
    Regards,
    Alex

    Huge fan of your work man. You shoot with 18mm in this tutorial? I was always under the impression you should shoot tight? Could you explain when it is better to shoot tight or wide?

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shooting a tight crop is ideal to maximize the resolution of the prodct area, though here I moved my camera close as possible to maximize the heroic distortion.
      So typically, yes shooting tight is ideal! It's just zooming out to 18mm creates the closest-possible distance where I can still focus.

    Thank you for sharing!! I have a question since the pictures will be to sell the product the colors need to be as we see them in real life.. so do you use any picture profile in your camera? Im a canon user.

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't use a specific picture profile, just the neutral settings as some of those settings are directly editable assuming you're shooting RAW I believe - but I often align colours to the exact hue a brand needs. Often with a layer in photoshop. Cheers

    Such a wonderful tutorial. I love the way you explain everything and break it all down. One thing I'm often finding is my images aren't really pin sharp. I use a tripod, remote, lockup mirror, timer with remote so no shake, my lenses are calibrated. I'm just at a loss. I'm on a canon 5d mark iii and its with all lenses even after calibration. Any advice?

    Hi Dustin, I take shots on pure white with my camera's highlight warning turned on. When I shoot, the background is pure white/blown out, but when I put the same image in LR or PS 2018 CC, the bg isn't white, if I turn up the whites, the products' color is effected. Have to use selection/pen tool to separate my product from the bg and pull the whites up all the way. I've recently turned to catalog white product photography but have general photography experience of 6 years almost. Now I have 500-700 products to shoot and this is really hindering my workphlo. Any tips please?

    Nice bare bones approach - showing that you don't NEED a lot to get good results. This type of approach would be nice if you're shooting one item. But, if you're doing product photography like this, you're more than likely going to be doing multiple items, at least if you're getting paid by a client for it. The cost/time would not be beneficial for anyone (client or photographer) involved. Just some thoughts for those wanting to approach product photography.

      @workphlo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good comment Steve, definitely just a heroic edit here -- see our most recent video for a catalog-friendly approach.

    Is 18mm really ideal? You’re cropping 80% of the pixels out and losing all that information. I’ve never seen cosmetics images shot with such a wide angle lens.. I usually use a 100 macro really in close, or a 50mm macro if I want wider. But 18? I dunno.
