    I love the chill, matter-of-fact attitude. Tutorials get a little exhausting when so many hosts yell at the camera with fake enthusiasm, almost trying to turn the viewer into a child with overdramatic excitement and way over simplified explanations about their basic photoshop tutorial. Everything doesn't always have to feel like an afternoon special for kids you know? This was a nice change, and great info!

    Hey - very nice video. Cool tips and tricks. One thing I saw that I might do differently:
    When you went to remove the black 'outline' around the product (5:00 or so into the video), I've found that using the mask selection, you can use a combination of Contract (by 1-2px) + Feather to get the same effect as the brushing you were doing. Should be a lot quicker and a similar result!

    Great video-super helpful! Since you're using digital backgrounds, is there any reason you shot in landscape? Wouldn't you get higher resolution of the product if you shot in portrait?

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Luke, may I apologize for missing this comment and give you the answer 3 months late? My tripod head is of poor quality and slowly lowers if the camera is in portrait orientation. So I sacrificed resolution here, to ensure the layer will line up in post for the product edit. (-:

    Hey Dustin! very good tutorial, I was wondering, if I can use same method above for portrait photography? but the problem is human are not static like product, so my question, is there any setting in transmitter for using a multiple flash to shoot in desire sequence? for example:
    pattern A using flash 1 and 2
    pattern B using flash 3 and 1
    and when I click the trigger, the transmitter will shoot using pattern A at first place followed by pattern B.. is that possible? thank you in advance!

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, I do not think this is possible but let me know if you find out otherwise.

    • @wavekick
      @wavekick 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At our company we are using flashes by "Hensel" for product photography. They have a function called freemask. With this function the camera is taking 2 pictures in a row and in every picture different flashes are used. The primary usage is to illuminate the product in the first picture and to illuminate ONLY the background in the second picture to create a silhouette of the object which you can use as a mask to seperate the object from the background. In the settings of the transmitter you can choose which flashes are used in every picture. The brand Godox has also flashes which have this function. There it is called "Alt mask". Both flashes by Hensel and by Godox are very expensive and made for professional use. Unfortunately it is not a solution for "hobby photographers". And it is very important that your model moves as less as possible because there are a few miliseconds between the first and the second picture. I hope I was able to answer your question. :)

    Hi Dustin. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the masks for the backgrounds. Do you apply the masks to every shot (your going to use for lighting effects) you bring into photoshop or after you are completely done retouching the product and then extract to use in the canvas. I know you take a sillihoute shot but can't figure out how you use it. Could you explain when you use it or how would be greatly appreciated. Really stuck on that. Thanks!

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there! For more help with masking, make sure to watch the video on our channel: How to Photograph Wine with Plexiglas. We go over start-to-finish the process of using a silhouette to select your item. Simply put, I apply the selection mask to a GROUP which contains all the layers, that way it's just 1 mask to cut out anything in that group.
      Best of luck and thanks for watching!

    • @dollyesd
      @dollyesd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cliff Fiess, Actually you can combine the art of the label (like a .png file with the logo and stuff) with the photo of the bottle. Adding a little bit of noise and grain at this png file, and after applying a bit of noise and grain on the entire image after placing the logo on the product, makes it look natural. Then you can have the best logo on the bottle you could have. This techinique is the most used I believe.

    What lens do you recommend for Product Video shooting so getting really upclose and getting the aluminium details to pop and the touchscreen. • @workphlo
      @workphlo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      NielsNy That's a great question, a focal length of 85-100mm is popular if you have the space to frame your item. Here I used kit lens, a lot of this comes down to lighting. Best of luck!

    • @nielsny310

    Hey man whats the black acrylic piece you put on top of that light stand? In which you put the deodorant on? Trying to find one to take similar product shots. Is the stand that the deodorant is on listed on your parts list as well?

      Hey there, it's actually custom welded. Google "baby wall plate" to find something similar on the market, best of luck!

    Much respect for your photography and tutorial skills, but I’m mainly commenting to say that you crack me the hell up! “I’m not really technically an expert at any of this stuff, I just like making deodorant look grreeat!” made me literally LOL 😂😂. I’m going through all your vids and learning something from each while being entertained. Keep it up!

    • @workphlo

      Chris Fisher Thanks! I use an LA softbox amazon. It was 55 dollars and 27 dollars for the speedlight bowens mount adapter!

    If you hang a sheet of Flexi-Glass between your side light and the product, the side highlight's edge transfer will be smoother and softer.

    Can you make a video on how to easily correct banding?? In a couple different ways?

    • @ChrisLambethMotion
      @ChrisLambethMotion 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      apply a small amount of grain over the whole image. Done.

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Chris Lambeth Noise is great for banding . The problem is there is also monitors and file compression which can externally introduce banding. ie. facebook upload or TH-cam compression. Thanks for watching!

    Some really useful stuff in here, kudos for that 😃
    Personally I prefer doing things like reflections in camera by actually placing an item on a reflective surface. But I can certainly see the value of just doing it in PS. Just a different school of thought, I guess.

    To create a gradient: Adjustment Layer -> Gradient Fill and also tick the Dither checkbox ( to reduce banding ).

    Theres a thing that i dont understand, the first shot you took using the stripbox speed light, i dont see any dark backgrounds when shooting but the picture result shows a dark background. My questions is that do you adjust the camera settings to make the background look darker or is it the light set up that takes away the visibility of the white background?

    • @workphlo
      @workphlo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ambient light you see behind the deodorant doesn't effect the shot since in the studio we shoot at dark settings f/13 1/200th ISO 100. The stripbox angled away from the background produces little light spilling there hence the dark dark grey, hope this helps!
