I love the chill, matter-of-fact attitude. Tutorials get a little exhausting when so many hosts yell at the camera with fake enthusiasm, almost trying to turn the viewer into a child with overdramatic excitement and way over simplified explanations about their basic photoshop tutorial. Everything doesn't always have to feel like an afternoon special for kids you know? This was a nice change, and great info!
Removing dust with a pin light layer and a color-picked brush is fantastic. Thank you for this tip! Making the whites pop with the "selective color" sliders is also something I had never learned before. Great stuff, Dustin!
Great tutorial, I was afraid to start product photography because of lack of skills with flashes, but your video shows the steps, and gives me idea how to start and build up my image! Cheers!
I started donging product photography months ago as well and been looking for some ideas and tutorials to learn. Hope we could both do it well buddy. Cheers.
So simple and to the point. You get good information out there without being too over the top like a lot of other tutorial youtubers these days! great video
Awsome tutorial, and yes using multiple exposures with different lighting and blending it in photoshop is a extremely powerful tool. As long as nothing moves it is great. It can be used in different types of photos to, i have used it in landscape, architectural and automotive photography.
Excellent point SouZ. These applications are far reaching in many photography genres, not just products! Our channel will expand to other areas when it's appropriate. (-: Stay tuned
I've been going through all your videos for the past day/ Seriously, this is a Masterclass in compositing from start to finish. Excellent material and brilliantly presented.
My man - killed this tutorial. Easy to follow, not boring, super informative(even things you probably didn't mean to like hot keys). Amazing quality you are getting out of your shots and especially final edits. Definitely looking forward to more videos!
Hey - very nice video. Cool tips and tricks. One thing I saw that I might do differently: When you went to remove the black 'outline' around the product (5:00 or so into the video), I've found that using the mask selection, you can use a combination of Contract (by 1-2px) + Feather to get the same effect as the brushing you were doing. Should be a lot quicker and a similar result!
Dustin - great presentation and REALLY useful information, start to finish. Very practical, and so very useful to me - I will definitely be seeking you out more! Thanks!
Hi Dustin the video is great but i am not sure how you get the transparent background after created the path....i am a newbie in PS so maybe you can help detailing a bit? Approx at min 3 before you color background in red thanks
Love seeing videos like this. I have a very basic setup myself with just one speedlite, softbox, and diffuser. All of your Photoshop edits include a lot of steps I do most days so it's nice to know I could achieve something like this without crazy gear!
Hello, your work is incredible, very good. Now , Can you see the pictures of Martini advertising? basically, there are out side with complements like raw food, well maybe would be great that kind of pictures in your Chanel, with a background outside, regards from Peru!
what if you use something like a gaussian blur for the background instead of adding noise? Just wondering what that would do. I think that would make sense, but i'd have to see it I guess. Great info in this video, I learn a lot every time! Thanks for sharing!!!
Did you use the pen tool to create your clipping path? Or did you use the backlit frame to somehow create a clipping path by altering the shadows/highlights?
Thank you for this video. As a detailer I’m planning to open a website and sell detailing products and this will really help me focus my time and energy into the product shoots.
Excellent video brother, I double majored in audio engineering and graphic design. That was years ago so I watch stuff like this to stay up on what people are doing and this is amazing work. Great job, very informative.. I definitely subbed.
Chris Lambeth Noise is great for banding . The problem is there is also monitors and file compression which can externally introduce banding. ie. facebook upload or TH-cam compression. Thanks for watching!
Hey Dustin! very good tutorial, I was wondering, if I can use same method above for portrait photography? but the problem is human are not static like product, so my question, is there any setting in transmitter for using a multiple flash to shoot in desire sequence? for example: pattern A using flash 1 and 2 pattern B using flash 3 and 1 and when I click the trigger, the transmitter will shoot using pattern A at first place followed by pattern B.. is that possible? thank you in advance!
At our company we are using flashes by "Hensel" for product photography. They have a function called freemask. With this function the camera is taking 2 pictures in a row and in every picture different flashes are used. The primary usage is to illuminate the product in the first picture and to illuminate ONLY the background in the second picture to create a silhouette of the object which you can use as a mask to seperate the object from the background. In the settings of the transmitter you can choose which flashes are used in every picture. The brand Godox has also flashes which have this function. There it is called "Alt mask". Both flashes by Hensel and by Godox are very expensive and made for professional use. Unfortunately it is not a solution for "hobby photographers". And it is very important that your model moves as less as possible because there are a few miliseconds between the first and the second picture. I hope I was able to answer your question. :)
Horizontal? Not sure what you meant, but you can crop any canvas size in Photoshop, especially because we are artificially making our background. Cheers!
At 1/200s the exposure is black without the flash, and the flash which is close to the subject is falling off drastically and barely illuminating the wall leaving it dark grey and appearing pure black. Hope that helps!
Hello Austin, Im your big fan from Indonesia. May we have your file for this deodoran so we can learn how to retouch this kind of photo?because I dont have the camera and gears yet. Thankyou.
Cliff Fiess, Actually you can combine the art of the label (like a .png file with the logo and stuff) with the photo of the bottle. Adding a little bit of noise and grain at this png file, and after applying a bit of noise and grain on the entire image after placing the logo on the product, makes it look natural. Then you can have the best logo on the bottle you could have. This techinique is the most used I believe.
Hi Dustin! I hope it's okay to ask but where did you receive your compositing training? I love the tips and tricks that you give during your videos and I love working in photoshop and want to get better with compositing

great tutorial mate. Lots of useful tips and no gear-mongering whatsoever!
Thank-you Amjad, it was a labor of love.

I appreciate that!
To create a gradient: Adjustment Layer -> Gradient Fill and also tick the Dither checkbox ( to reduce banding ).

crimorf It sounds like it works in theory, though in practice a blur actually worsens the issue. It alll comes down to colour depth! (-:

what camera and lens do you use? Beautiful work btw
If you hang a sheet of Flexi-Glass between your side light and the product, the side highlight's edge transfer will be smoother and softer.
Thank you Steven !
Dude this was amazing. You were flawless with your tutorial !
Pedro, thanks for the kind words brother.
Can you make a video on how to easily correct banding?? In a couple different ways?
apply a small amount of grain over the whole image. Done.
Chris Lambeth Noise is great for banding . The problem is there is also monitors and file compression which can externally introduce banding. ie. facebook upload or TH-cam compression. Thanks for watching!
Look up "dithering." That's the technique he used.
This is awesome!
Arman Sheikh Glad you enjoyed it.
