Thank you very much. I finally solved the burning smell problem! I bought this Dyson because it says it is for pets (Dyson Animal) but mine are Shelties that do have long hair and it was wrapped tight under the shield also. Thank you so much for the solution!
Thank you for this video, I managed to clean up the brush bar, but it wasn't too clogged up. Sadly the brush bar still not working, so I'm thinking a wire or motor issue. Do you have any info on sorting this, any help would be appreciated. Thank you
Thank you so much! Been trying to figure out how to get the hair out of that drive piece for years. After Dyson replacing the whole head twice I’m amazed they didn’t show me how to do this and prevent the problem in the first place. Great video!
I used a T10, a T15, and a Phillips size #1 to follow this tutorial, just FYI for anyone else watching! I was using the wrong sized Phillips heads at first and thought I needed a super special shaped tool, but it turned out I was using a #2 which was too big, and a #00 which was too small. Easy mistake for those of us who didn't realize Phillips heads came in different sizes. Thanks for this detailed video!! The Dyson video for the same issue has no audio and doesn't go as far in depth taking apart the machine. This one is much better.
Average user here. I had no idea that the brush roll wasn't continuous from one end to the other. Thanks for pointing out where the problem spots are and how to clean it properly.
Thank you so much!!! I'm nearly in tears writing this! I thought I was doomed, and had wasted over $500 on a vacuum, but I followed your video (pausing and restarting) to get my brush head clean and it works great now, with no more burning smell, and the brush rollers don't cut out anymore! I bought a Dyson animal ball 2 a few years ago, and within 3 months I began to smell a faint burning smell, and the rollers would sporadically shut down while in use. I cleaned what I thought was the entire brush head assembly, but I was shocked at all the small areas you pulled hair and dust from on this video. I, of course, missed those areas, and within another 3 month, the brush head stopped working altogether. So I ended up ordering a replacement brush head (for $100), waited nearly 9 months to get it, and the same thing started happening again. After contacting Dyson customer service, they told me I have carpeting with "too high of pile" and that my machine was never going to work property in my home. That was devastating to hear. I called the only 2 vacuum repair places within an hour of where I live, and neither of them service Dysons (I can see why now). TH-cam was a last ditch effort, and I'm so incredibly thankful I found your video! It was extremely helpful, detailed, and I sincerely appreciate the knowledge you've shared! This literally saved the day! P.S. Could you tell me what kind of lubricant you used on the bearings?
I'm so glad I was able to help. That's what this channel is for! It will probably happen again, but now you know how to fix it. The oil that I used is Dupont Silicone Lubricant with Teflon. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Super helpful to see this. And thanks for mentioning the T10 screwdriver. That's the kind of thing we (amateurs) don't know. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you so much for this great information. I just took my cleaner head off , opened it up, and cleaned it for the first time. (hair clods that looked like 2 dead mice came out of it). Ordered the tools and oil you recommended to get into the middle part to check for hair. I think Amazon thinks I'm going to work on a gun. Even found the little hooky thing "pick and hook set" you used! Thank you so much for helping me hopefully save my vacuum for a while longer. What a pain that that little discontinued middle part can cost you so much if you don't check it! You're right. NO ONE would know!
thank you so much, I took apart every piece that doesn't need a screwdriver and cleaned it , but couldn't find the source of the smell, until this video.
Thank you! I clicked on this video on a whim while putting mine back together from replacing an internal hose. I thought it would be a time killer. Nope! I clean my dc65 brush very often so I didn't think I had any issues, but after taking it completely apart like you did I had some crazy melted hair. Thankfully not worn through to the bearings like this one. But I can see the difference on the bad side vs the terrible side of mine. Now I know to do this with every cleaning. Thank you again! We are also a family with lots of long hair, good to know this isn't a good choice of vacuum. We've had it for 5 years and got it as a refurbished machine. Still going strong as we replace each part that breaks. Learning so much that I wish I'd known from day one to care for my vacuum 😬
great video, solved my problem! My burning smell was coming from the ends of the brushroll. Even after I cleaned out everything internally, I was stil experiencing the burning smell. I didn't realize you could take the ends apart. Once I did that and emptied out the fuzz, issue was gone!
I agree with you on Dyson. So frustrating to use and a nightmare for people who have hairy dogs like me. Takes so much time to clean and fix after every use. Recommendations welcome. I like Bissell so far and, of course, my old fashioned Rainbow.
Hi Stephanie! Thanks for watching! For something that is not incredibly expensive like a Rainbow but will far outlast and outclean something like a Dyson or Bissell, I would recommend Sebo. Specifically the Dart or Felix models. Very well built, made in Germany, and relatively affordable. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
Very informative thank you. I had the same burning smell issue with our Dyson. I took the entire power brush unit apart and found debris (hair) in the motor and everywhere else. The burning smell was actually in the motor. I was surprised how quickly you assumed the smell was only from the rollovers. You had all the screws out to pop the motor cover, but never explored that possibility. I appreciate your time and knowledge. I did learn from you how easy it is to remove the power brush unit and a disassembly procedure.
Thanks for watching and the comment. While on rare occasions hair can breach into the motor unit, you will typically see evidence of that at the bearing posts where the brushroll attaches. If you see hair extending into the motor housing, then you certainly need to address that. In this case it had not advanced that far. Cheers!
This video was excellent! Problem solved and I’m back to vacuuming. I’ll be certain to clean the roller much more frequently as well. Thank you for this great step-by-step video!
I agree this unit is over the top, at a high cost. Got one from trash pickup day and wanted to learn how it works and what went wrong with it. Plaster dust blocked the ports in the space gun canister and the roller motor was smoking due to hair as shown and water in- take. Thanks for the video.
Awesome! I can appreciate your perspective on Dyson. It helps me understand the infatuation with them by others. Hearing you sigh a bit while working on it, I can relate to it. We’ve had ours for years. Thanks for info.🤓
Didn't realize how bad it can get with stuck hair on the brush roll. Hopefully this will resolve start and stop issue with brushroll. Than,s for the video.
Great video, I really appreciate the close ups and calling out that T-10 screwdriver. Wish I would have seen this video before I bought this POS Dyson. Thanks for this excellent resource.
Very informative. I bought one at goodwill yesterday and the brush roller did not spin. Figured it out quick. I like your way of explaining without unnecessary babbling
Of all the vacuum cleaners I’ve tried my Dyson ball one is by far the best, I keep the filters clean & get it serviced every couple of years & no problems at all, but all electrical goods have a suicide time & all you can do is put it off for as long as possible.
Thank you so much, this was exactly what the problem was with my vacuum. Do you have a recommendation for a vacuum with a family that does have a lot of long hair? Seems like this is not the vacuum for us unfortunately.
Dear Sir, Thank you for your comprehensive video. I have just spent an hour and a half taking my eldest daughter’s Dyson apart after she complained of burning smell. As I followed your video I found all the problems you found and she has just completed a cleaning of her house (2 stories, four bedrooms) with no burning smell. So my sincere thanks. Can I ask whether it is possible to break down the torque drive, just curiosity? Peter
Excellent details. Fortunately, the design issues w/ the easy access bearing housings has been addressed in the Animal 2 model. There is still the choke point at the junction of the head and ball, as well as the small air channels still clogging quickly.
Great video! I so much wish I had a T-10 Screwdriver. I borrowed my Aunt's Dyson and soon realized how not worthwhile these things are. I smelled burning and thought I would be a considerate borrower and try to fix it and clean it. Definitely, prefer my ancient Oreck (even though it won't work on hardwood floors). No point in having a HEPA filter when it ends up all back in the air as you soon as you try to clean it.
How true! Worst case scenario, you can usually pick up a cheap individual T10 screwdriver at the hardware store for $7-9. Might save her from having to buy a new machine. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for this...saved me a trip to vacuum repair store with our burning smell. Our Dyson Animal 2 seems to be a good sucker...but this issue bites...wished i know what to buy next time. You'd think for the money, Dyson would be better.
I'm glad you got it running! Unfortunately, Dyson spend an inordinate amount of money on marketing, so their vacuums are built like something that is $200-300, but they are charging $400-600. When it is time to replace it, look at Sebo. You'll be glad you did!
Thanks for watching? With regard to your question, how much carpeting vs hard flooring do you have in your home? The proper vacuum selection will depend on catering it to your flooring. Let me know and I can make some suggestions!
@@HouseOfVacuums Thanks! The main use is for thick carpeting in the main living areas. (After watching your video and taking apart the brush roller, I was shocked at how much hair had melted into the plastic.) Thanks again!
For a household with a lot of long hair and majority carpeting, I highly recommend anything by Sebo, but most specifically one of their uprights. They all have toolless brushroll removal which makes these super easy to own when hair wrapping is an issue. They also have the 10 year parts/motor and 7 year labor warranty when you buy from a dealership like us or your local vac shop. Sebo Dart - $499 Sebo G4 - $699 Sebo X4 - $799 Sebo X7 - $999 These all have the toolless brushroll, and I think $499 for a starting price is pretty reasonable for a vac made in Germany when you consider what your Dyson cost new. Sebos are pretty much indestructable. I have a video about the Sebo E3 canister in my Sebo playlist on my channel. Pretty much everything I said there holds trust for their uprights as well. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
Everything looked fine on mine. However, Dyson did not do a good job of sealing the brushed motor platform that holds the terminal wires in the galleries and the motor with the radial seal. Dust bunnies get into the motor cavities over time. The smell in mine also contributed to a hot motor which I caught in time. If your getting hair build up issues and burning smell due to lack of maintenance, and everything looks fine on the surface. I would strip everything down just to the motor platform, remove the wire terminals off the motor take tge wiring out of the passages or wire galleries undo the U shaped wire recess from the powerbrush assembly right to terminals and inspect for melted or discoloration of the wiring as well. Future problems can lead to brittle insulation of the wire and shorts causing intermittent powerbrush operation or no operation at all or motor burn out. Did this to mine and a deep clean to avoid Future issues. Others weren't so fortunate when I serviced theirs. By the way that powerhead is discontinued. A used powerhead that has other issues, but the motor and gear drive assembly is good is your best bet or a good used powerbrush is ones best bet.
Great video, when cleaning my vacuum, realized the main bearing was broke. Curious what new vacuum would you recommend at this price (Dyson Animal 2 / 2 years old). We have two retriever’s , so lots of long hair to contend with.
Sorry to hear your main bearing didn't make it! For those who like uprights, have a decent amount of carpets and a lot of hair/fur, I highly recommend either the Sebo X4 Boost or X7. They are unfazed by pet hair and are designed to be easily maintained/disassembled without tools. They aren't cheap, but in 20 years they will have been worth every penny.
I've been using DuPont silicone oil with Teflon, but it seems to be getting hard to find. Another option is Tri-Flow, which is also silicone with Teflon. Thanks for the question and watching!
Do you have a video with suggestions when buying a new vacuum? Like best most reliable options . I’m tired of these bagless options. I want a bagged vacuum
Hello, thank you for the video. Can you please recommend a vacuum for a family with long hair. I have the Dyson ball and I have to clean it often to control that smell caused by the wrapped around hair. I am ready to buy a better vacuum! Thank you.
Thank you for the tutorial. I found it very helpful to understand and maintain my dyson. Can you tell me what size of screwdriver are you using to remove the brackets that hold the brushes? Thanks again!
Thanks for watching, I'm glad that you found it helpful! If you are referring to the two screws that hold in the each of the brushroll endcaps, those are phillips head screws (2:54). I think they are PH1, but you could probably use PH2 in a pinch. Thanks again!
TYSM...I took my dyson to the local guy here(dallas) and was asked to buy the newer one. Which one would u recommend for household with too much human hair...no pets...just a whole bunch of hair...
Thanks for watching and for the comment! I personally recommend Sebo vacs for anything related to hair, whether human or pet. The have a very well-built brushroll system with tool-less removal that make them extremely easy to maintain. They are also made in Germany and come with a 10 year warranty if you purchase from an authorized dealer like myself. They start at $499, so right in Dyson's bread and butter range... but with much better quality. Thanks Again!
Thanks! I have a DC 41 animal that I bought in 2013. I bought a new clearhead assembly 7 months ago because I didn't want to take apart my old one. I had already taken apart the cyclone and didn't want to invest more time learning. That was such a mistake! The new one was full of hair in 7 months. The original one was so much nicer and lasted a decade before I thought it might need to be cleaned. My next vacuum won't be a Dyson. I don't want to take it apart every 6 months. What happened to Dyson? The quality is going down.
Thanks for the informative video. Will clean out the hair of our Dyson cleaner tomorrow due to burning smell. Such a high maintenance piece. Which low maintenance and power suction cleaner would you recommend (brand n model? Thanks!
Hi David! In the same pricepoint as the Dyson I recommend the Sebo Dart/Felix. Super well built, made in Germany, crazy easy to maintain. A slight step up will get you into a Sebo X4 or X7, which are also great. Search for "Sebo Felix Reddit" and you'll get a TON of information and first hand testimonials on them. It definitely has a cult following. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Oh man, if that is the case then you probably have hair sucked into the drive assembly. You can try to take off the motor (screws are accessed from underneath in the brushroll chamber), but the main bearing block is not accessible. There's a very good chance you'll need to get a new nozzle assembly to replace it.
This was incredibly helpful, even if I discovered our drive was not in good shape after finding the burning and melted hair. Still, this was such a clear, informative video, I knew exactly how to find the issue and how bad the issue was. Based on your comment in the video, what vacuum would you recommend for a household with long hair and pet hair?
Thanks for watching, Scott! Sorry to hear the drive assembly was already too far gone. I personally like Sebo vacuums for households with a lot of hair, mostly because their brushroll design is pretty impervious to hair melting. The brushroll can also be completely removed without tools for cleaning. My wife and daughter have long hair and that is what I use upstairs where most of it accumulates. They are made in Germany and built like tanks. For an upright, they start at $499 retail, so they aren't out of this world different than Dyson prices... but the quality is much, much better. For a general overview of their quality, check out my video on the Sebo E3. It's long, but it shows the build quality from the inside out. You can also check out the Reddit sub r/VacuumCleaners... there is a lot of good Sebo information there. Let me know if any other questions come up!
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for watching! The Dyson Ball models have a valve that diverts suction to the tools when the vacuum is upright. There may be a clog just past that area. I created a video for checking clogs on a similar model, you can check it out here: th-cam.com/video/fEzdeHVgvkY/w-d-xo.html . Take a look and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
After watching the video, I took my vacuum apart. I didn't have that fancy little tool to take the roller off on the ends it appears it needs a special screwdriver. When I got to checking the hose for the extension, I found the culprit. It was a small yellow met al padlock that my daughter must have left somewhere on the floor and it got sucked up. Thank you again. If not for the video, I never would have found the problem without taking it to a place that would have charged me a lot of money.
Batteries on the V series is an issue, however the fault is mostly the owner. Cleaning a whole carpeted house on boost mode or animal grooming on boost mode constantly kills the battery. I only use it if someone tracked footsteps of dirt on a carpet ( 15 seconds max that's it). Most of this flashing blue is overuse on max or boost and other improper use.
It’s amazing how fast hair can get wrapped in an vacuum. (I guess having dogs + an cat doesn’t help) I’ve already cleaned the hair out on month old vacuum. At least Bissell made it easy. I like being to see the brush roll so I can do it before it gets like that.
Hi Lynn! Both my wife and my daughter have long hair. I find that most of it is focused upstairs in the bedrooms and bathroom. So on the upstairs level I have a Sebo E3 which has the tool-less brushroll removal. It doesn't have bearings to pull the hair into and everything in the brushroll is protected. It takes maybe two minutes maximum to clean the brushroll with a pair of scissors. It's the vac I sell to any friends who have issues with hair wrapping and all of them are please. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching and commenting!
2:47 The phillips screw driver needed is very small. I got one but the screws were so tight, they would not budge. Is there a better way to get them out? I might of even stipped the screws a little.
The best way to avoid stripping them is to use either a Phillips #1 or #0 screwdriver to them. If one is stripped beyond repair, you can also try a super small pocket flathead screwdriver. It will fit in one "cross section" of the phillips slot, for lack of a better term. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the subscription! My current top 3 uprights are the Sebo X4, Sebo Mechanical 300 and Riccar R30. In my house I have all canisters since it has only hardwood and area rugs... although I do have a Miele U1 stashed away at the shop since they have stopped producing them. My vacs at home are a Sebo E3, Miele C3 Brilliant, Miele S6, Bosch Premium Electro Duo XXL, Bosch Formula Duo Plus, and a Miele HX1 Standard. I also have a Dyson V6 and V10 I picked up refurbished to benchmark against the HX1.
I took the rotor head motor out but can't recall how the wire went around the suction inlet. I did not unplug the motor just pulled it apart and left it connected. The wire wraps around the swivel plug.
A phillips #1 or #0 will work on the end caps. If I remember correctly, the drive shaft uses a T15 or T20 to retain it. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video! Did you use a t10 for all the screws? Is there a specific tool kit you use or do you piece them together? I am looking to buy one of these vacuums this year.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, all the screws are either T10 or Phillips #1. I use a Channel Lock Torx set which I think was around $20. My Dad's bench as the Wiha set which are like $50 but worth every penny. You can pick up a good set at Home Depot or Lowes no problem. That being said, if you have anyone with long hair in your house I would stay far away from this particular model because the maintenance is going to be non-stop.
Hi. Thank you so much for the video! I took apart my brush roll and the direct drive covers shown here 8:40. I didn’t pay attention to which side they were on. Do you know if the D3 (the other being D2) cover is on the shorter or longer side of the brush roll? Thank you.
Thanks for commenting and watching! Unfortunately, the DC41 is a maintenance intensive machine if you want it to continue performing properly. I would continue to maintain it like you have (8 years is a great run for one of these machines!) and save up for something lower maintenance in the future. If you want a low maintenance upright that will last you decades without having to worry about it I would look at a Sebo X4 or X7. They aren't the cheapest vacs out there, but for their build and durability I do think they are a very good value.
If you let this go on with the burning smell for to long can it burn out or mess up the actual motor? I’m gonna take my head apart soon and would hate to buy another head for 100 bucks only to find out the motor is now compromised
I have no idea why Dyson sell corded uprights in other markets outside of the UK with this brush roll design. The brush itself its great; good quality and it agitates incredibly well, but that blind spot is nothing but a nuisance and a hindrance. Corded Dyson in the UK have used a new updated floor head which looks like a beefed up V11 floor head with a direct drive belt and a much larger diameter brush roll.
The only model that is not cordless that Dyson sold in the United States with the same brush or design is what they used in the United Kingdom is the Dyson DC 50 and we slightly updated design redesign with the Dyson DC 24 handle
What if you aren't getting much suction from the ground / brush setting? If I remove the bottom and cover my hand over the opening, you can feel the suction just fine. However, it doesn't really appear to be picking up dog hair on the carpet all that well anymore. Thoughts?
Thanks for watching and the comment! My first guess would be that it is not clogged, but rather you have restricted filters or cyclones. Pull the pre and post motor filters and make sure they are clean. You can also check your cyclone chamber by shining a flashlight up the middle column from the bottom of you dirt cup. Try and and let me know if anything comes up.
I am admittedly watching this without sound while I feed my baby but if you did everything to clear out the hair as described in this video and the brush roll still does not roll and the smell is still present…does that mean the vacuum is toast and I’m looking at a new vacuum/parts?
Sorry for the delay, Alisha! I was on vacation. Yes, if it is still experiencing those issues after cleaning it means the hair got pulled into the drive assembly. It isn't able to be services, so it may be time for a new nozzle unfortunately.
Thanks for the video! I bought this vacuum because it was so highly recommended for pets, as we have 2 cats and I vacuum 1-2 times each week. I find that I have to go through the steps in your video after every single use. Although there isn't as much fur as shown in your video, there's a lot for 1 use. Clearly a design flaw. What can I do to avoid breaking out the tool box every time I vacuum? Is there another power head with a better design that is compatible? I'd be very interested in your thoughts! Thanks!
Hi Krista! Sorry to hear you having issues with your Dyson... hair in the ends is unfortunately very common. The truth about Dyson Animal models is that they are identical to their non-Animal machines but have more tools included with them. Dyson made two nozzles for that upright... the North American and European spec. The Euro spec model is a much better design that doesn't have the hair wrapping issues. Unfortunately, it runs only on 220V and not the 120V your machine runs on, so they are not swappable. I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but at this point it really is a matter of maintaining your Dyson or getting another machine that is less susceptible to hair wrapping. If you are looking ahead for a machine that might better fit your needs, I highly recommend Sebo vacuums for households with a lot of human or pet hair. They are very resilient when it comes to hair wrapping and you can also clean the brushroll with no tools. I made a video that will show you some of the features, you can view that here: th-cam.com/video/O_iXluAjKSs/w-d-xo.html I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions!
I appreciate knowing the size of the screwdriver as well. We have a golden retriever and the need to take this apart and clean it is about every 3rd time. The bad part is that the brush looks fairly clean and a person cannot really see how much hair is in the machine until you take it apart including the plugs the brush bars attach to. Early on I took my Dyson to their service center and explained the problem of the burning smell and they acted like no one else had reported the issue. It was hard to believe and gave me the sense they were not very honest. I had it in there probably twice a year during the 5 year warranty. $550 is a lot to spend on a vacuum cleaner and I expected to get more than 5 years of service out of it. I do think it is great with the suction and cleaning but the maintenance? Well for me to still be nursing the thing along says how much I appreciate its cleaning capabilities. I will NOT get another Dyson though when this one finally bites the dust. The service center was fairly generous giving me 2 new brush heads while under warranty and I was careful to collect the old one knowing I'd probably need their parts. I will look on your website to see which vacuums you sell. Thanks for the video.
Would yo usay that this means if somone were to buy that model that it is garbage kinda liek assuming if soone says it is then its the case for a "Sidewinder or else its the worm driven skillsaw"?
Yeah, those nozzle assemblies are just problem prone in general. They are especially bad for households with lots of hair, but I have seen the direct drive fail on machines with no hair wrapping. Check out the channel's Community tab... I recently posted a video of a non-hair related failure. Thanks for the question!
This doesn't always work, but stick a toothpick down the hole and break it off. Then put in the screw as you normally would. The added material from the toothpick will often allow the screw to hold as long as you don't over-tighten it.
I'm new here you just got a new subscriber me I'm watching this because I'm getting a dyson dc65 and I believe that the heads are the same and I'm probably going to clean up the head so thanks for the video man
Yup, riding on a plastic gear assembly and not user serviceable. The part isn't even available for purchase. If it breaks, you buy a new head assembly. Crazy!
What was the vacuum you mentioned in this video with the metal gears in the head. I have the Dyson Ball 2 Animal and I dislike it for many reasons and I am looking for a vacuum for a family with long hair and pet hair. Thanks!
For a permanent drive system, I don't think anyone can beat what Sebo has in the X7-series uprights. They are on another level in terms of build and reliability.
Is there a place to get just the bearings for the brush bar rotator? I got the whole thing apart, cleaned, put it all back together and it made an awful noise and only sort of rotated the brushes. Took it all back apart and found the bearings broken. The sheltie hair had to have been holding them together or something.
Thanks for watching! So the plastic end caps are just friction fitted over the bearing, so you need to gently pull or pry them off. Go slow and don't force it and they will eventually come free.
Mine start smelling like burning and we keep using it I was sure was from the brush and started to do a terrible noise, probably I have to buy a new brush ☹️
I'm sorry to hear it! Now you know how to take it apart and check it. However, if you can't get the brush out of the brushroll drive or if the plastic is melted, unfortunately you will need to purchase a new nozzle assembly. Burning hair is a pretty distinct smell, but if it isn't that then it may be the motor... but if you have a lot of hair wrapping on your brushroll it probably isn't. Best of luck and thanks for the comment!
My hair is down to my butt. I nearly broke the scissors trying to cut and pull it out. I can't seem to get the screws out from the corners. My roller doesn't roll when I push the start button too, even the gray button does nothing. Help!
My wife and daughter have long hair, so I understand the struggle. Were you using a proper Torx T10 screwdriver to try to remove it? Or were you trying to remove the #1 Phillips? If you try to remove a #1 Phillips with a #2 it will be almost impossible to remove. Let me know if that helps or if you have other questions. Thanks!
Wait... did you just say this "wasn't a vacuum particularly suited for this household based on the amount of hair I'm seeing?" Wow. We thought this was the "end-all" for pet hair. Dang. What other vacuum do you recommend? Or is there a way to replace the bearing at Graingers or somewhere? $100 bucks for that attachment?? Oof. I see why you do not to carry them. That sucks. I remember the advertising, "He tried 5000 different vacs and came up with the perfect one-without bags!"
It's unfortunate, but Dyson's marketing leaves most people with the same impression that you had. Truthfully, the only thing that makes this model the "Animal" is some of the attachments and the purple color. As for fixing the drive, it is a sealed unit and once it seizes it is toast, there is no way to replace the inner bearings and then get it put back together. I would definitely rebuild them if I could! As for something that is better with pet hair, I highly recommend Sebo vacuums. They start in the Dyson price range and are much, much better for maintenance and longevity. A few models that I would look at depending on your flooring needs would be the Dart, Felix, or X7... they go up in price in that order. If you would like more of a personalized recommendation based on your flooring shoot me an email at hov@thehouseofvacs.com. Thanks!
Thank you very much. I finally solved the burning smell problem! I bought this Dyson because it says it is for pets (Dyson Animal) but mine are Shelties that do have long hair and it was wrapped tight under the shield also. Thank you so much for the solution!
So happy to help! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you for this video, I managed to clean up the brush bar, but it wasn't too clogged up. Sadly the brush bar still not working, so I'm thinking a wire or motor issue. Do you have any info on sorting this, any help would be appreciated. Thank you
When that Dyson kicks the bucket, get a real vacuum like a Miele C3 or a Sebo.
Happy to help!
@@HouseOfVacuums never had that happen to mine but it’s had some issues that are rather annoying.
Super helpful to see this. And thanks for mentioning the T10 screwdriver. That's the kind of thing we (amateurs) don't know. Thanks so much for sharing!
I'm glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
I'm so glad you got your vacuum back on the road again. Awesome job, you deserve some recognition because it isn't an easy job!
thank you so much, I took apart every piece that doesn't need a screwdriver and cleaned it , but couldn't find the source of the smell, until this video.
Awesome, so happy to help!
Awesome, I'm so glad you found the video helpful!
great video, solved my problem! My burning smell was coming from the ends of the brushroll. Even after I cleaned out everything internally, I was stil experiencing the burning smell. I didn't realize you could take the ends apart. Once I did that and emptied out the fuzz, issue was gone!
I had the burning smell in mine. It was the same issue. Thank you very much!!! Saying that I need a T10 to take it apart was very helpful.
I'm so glad it was helpful! Hopefully it will keep your Dyson on the road for a while longer. Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks!
Just saved me from buying unneeded parts. Thank you Sir!
Happy to help and save you a few bucks!
Cheers!
Thank you! I pulled a rat’s nest of hair out of the drive shaft. I appreciate you making and uploading this video.
This video was excellent! Problem solved and I’m back to vacuuming. I’ll be certain to clean the roller much more frequently as well. Thank you for this great step-by-step video!
Great, I'm so glad it was helpful! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Thank you!!!! Finally figured out how to clean the areas of my vacuum that no other videos showed. Safe to say this will be my last Dyson product.
Thanks for the wonderful video. Just don't make fun of us because we love Dysons. All 12 year olds do. Keep up the good work.
I agree this unit is over the top, at a high cost. Got one from trash pickup day and wanted to learn how it works and what went wrong with it. Plaster dust blocked the ports in the space gun canister and the roller motor was smoking due to hair as shown and water in- take. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Awesome! I can appreciate your perspective on Dyson. It helps me understand the infatuation with them by others. Hearing you sigh a bit while working on it, I can relate to it. We’ve had ours for years. Thanks for info.🤓
LOL, I also have a habit of deep, cleansing breaths when I'm thinking, so it may or may not have been Dyson-induced frustration!
Didn't realize how bad it can get with stuck hair on the brush roll. Hopefully this will resolve start and stop issue with brushroll. Than,s for the video.
Awesome! Hope it keeps working well for you. Thanks for watching!
I just did this to mine with flimsy computer tools as a discovery process so it was really fun to hear knowledgeable explanations of my suspicions :)
And the philosophy is deep, too!
So glad it was helpful! Hopefully that will keep your Dyson cleaning a while longer. Best of luck!
Great video, I really appreciate the close ups and calling out that T-10 screwdriver. Wish I would have seen this video before I bought this POS Dyson. Thanks for this excellent resource.
Great, I'm so glad it wound up being helpful. Hopefully this will help you keep your Dyson cleaning for a while longer! Thanks for watching.
Very informative. I bought one at goodwill yesterday and the brush roller did not spin. Figured it out quick. I like your way of explaining without unnecessary babbling
Glad it was helpful!
Very good demonstration how to clean brush head.
Thank you, I'm glad it was helpful!
Of all the vacuum cleaners I’ve tried my Dyson ball one is by far the best, I keep the filters clean & get it serviced every couple of years & no problems at all, but all electrical goods have a suicide time & all you can do is put it off for as long as possible.
Great instructional video. You definitely saved me a lot of time finding all the little nooks and crannies that needed to be cleaned.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video
To the point and easy to follow instructions for vacuum care

@@HouseOfVacuums It is a good thing. You had me in tears when talking about Dyson. Cheers!
Thank you so much for the clear and informative video! I was about to buy a new nozzle assembly, but now I do not have to!

Love these . I love to know how to clean my vacuum and to take it apart and repair it . Thanks
So glad it was helpful, Rebecca. Cheers!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA HAVE TO BUY A NEW ONE BEFORE THIS!
Thank you very much, awesome video!! What would be your top picks for a family with lots of long hair? Thanks!
Sebo Dart - $499
Sebo G4 - $699
Sebo X4 - $799
Sebo X7 - $999
These all have the toolless brushroll, and I think $499 for a starting price is pretty reasonable for a vac made in Germany when you consider what your Dyson cost new.
Thanks for sharing!
This video was exactly what I was looking for. I was able to find the problem, thank you so much.
Happy to help!
Great video! Best I've seen on the topic. Curious what oil you use, if you dont mind?
I've been using DuPont silicone oil with Teflon, but it seems to be getting hard to find. Another option is Tri-Flow, which is also silicone with Teflon. Thanks for the question and watching!
@@HouseOfVacuums Thanks for the reply! Great job leveraging TH-cam to share your vast expertise on the subject!
Thank you. Great work. I’m going to follow your instructions.
Do you have a video with suggestions when buying a new vacuum? Like best most reliable options . I’m tired of these bagless options. I want a bagged vacuum
Fantastic video! I have to admit your thumbnail got me to watch it.
Thanks! It's one of my favorite thumbnails so far...
Hello, thank you for the video. Can you please recommend a vacuum for a family with long hair. I have the Dyson ball and I have to clean it often to control that smell caused by the wrapped around hair. I am ready to buy a better vacuum! Thank you.
You should talk about the size of the tools you use - like Torx, Phillips etc.
Thanks for the tip, Tom! I usually try to, but don't get it every time.
House Of Vacuums That is exactly what I needed - thank you!
Thanks for the recommendation! Will look into the Sebo brand. Personally, i prefer bagged cleaners vs bagless.
Burning smell still there after cleaning out hair. Maybe hair in motor? How can I open up motor unit? Thanks
Oh man, if that is the case then you probably have hair sucked into the drive assembly. You can try to take off the motor (screws are accessed from underneath in the brushroll chamber), but the main bearing block is not accessible. There's a very good chance you'll need to get a new nozzle assembly to replace it.
Can i open up drive assembly to inspect and remove hair? Thx
I enjoyed the video. I've lost suction in the extendable hose with attachments. What could be the problem?
Awesome! I'm glad you found the source of the problem!
Great thank you! Lawrence Smith, Roslyn, NY
If you want to see easy, you should check out the brushroll removal on a Sebo!
@@HouseOfVacuums That’s even easier it just pulls out.
Thank you for this video! Very helpful!
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise.
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
All my grils have long hair and i have to clean mine all the time what kind of vac do you use
Excellent video. Can you tell me more about the type of lubricant you used and where to find it.
Hey Soma! It's Dupont Silicone Oil with Teflon, but any silicone oil will do as it doesn't break down plastic like petroleum oil can. Hope that helps!
So would you recommend buying a vacuum to vacuum my vacuum?
Well, it may not be for everyone, but that is how I empty all my bagless vacuums 😂. Thanks for commenting!
Yes. You just saved my day!!!! Thank you
Glad to help! Thanks for watching and the comment!
Dude! Your attitude towards the Dyson is identical to my, technology and gaming young Jedi, coworker towards the iPhone or any Apple products😂
Thanks for the comment! Cheers!
What's your top 3 upright vacuums?and what do you own for your household?I just subscribed as well.
What vacuum would your recommend for housecleaners to use that gets alot of use every week?
Soooo what’s the best upright vacuum on the market if not Dyson? TY
I took the rotor head motor out but can't recall how the wire went around the suction inlet. I did not unplug the motor just pulled it apart and left it connected. The wire wraps around the swivel plug.
Yes, there is a channel on the side that slides with the pivot. The wiring should sit in there freely. Hope that helps!
What sized screw drivers at you using to undo the endcap? and a T1 is used for the drive pin?
This was AWESOME!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Tracy. Thanks for watching!
Hi. Thank you so much for the video!
I took apart my brush roll and the direct drive covers shown here 8:40. I didn’t pay attention to which side they were on. Do you know if the D3 (the other being D2) cover is on the shorter or longer side of the brush roll?
Thank you.
Worked well! Thank you!
I regularly maintained our dc41 (dyson ball) that we bought 8 years ago and it's not my favorite chore. Is there a long-term solution?
Thanks for commenting and watching! Unfortunately, the DC41 is a maintenance intensive machine if you want it to continue performing properly. I would continue to maintain it like you have (8 years is a great run for one of these machines!) and save up for something lower maintenance in the future. If you want a low maintenance upright that will last you decades without having to worry about it I would look at a Sebo X4 or X7. They aren't the cheapest vacs out there, but for their build and durability I do think they are a very good value.
What vacuum do you recommend for long hair dogs?
Yup, the UK design is by far superior! Americans have got to deal with this one...
The only model that is not cordless that Dyson sold in the United States with the same brush or design is what they used in the United Kingdom is the Dyson DC 50 and we slightly updated design redesign with the Dyson DC 24 handle
Thank you for the video. I appreciate the detail and explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
I made a video that will show you some of the features, you can view that here: th-cam.com/video/O_iXluAjKSs/w-d-xo.html
I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions!
@@HouseOfVacuums Thanks for all of your insight! I will definitely check out a Sebo for my next vacuum. Thanks again!

Thanks so much for that! Happy I could help.
How do you address a stripped screw port?
This doesn't always work, but stick a toothpick down the hole and break it off. Then put in the screw as you normally would. The added material from the toothpick will often allow the screw to hold as long as you don't over-tighten it.

We took ours apart and removed hair also. The brush roll has not worked since, super frustrating!
I think it must have eaten into the bearings. It is super frustrating, but unfortunately common.
Did you know Dyson actually uses A belt in their ball modelsSince the DC 15
Yup, riding on a plastic gear assembly and not user serviceable. The part isn't even available for purchase. If it breaks, you buy a new head assembly. Crazy!
@@HouseOfVacuums crazy what bagless vacuum manufactures get away with even Dyson the best bagless vacuum
Thank you!
Is there a place to get just the bearings for the brush bar rotator? I got the whole thing apart, cleaned, put it all back together and it made an awful noise and only sort of rotated the brushes. Took it all back apart and found the bearings broken. The sheltie hair had to have been holding them together or something.
If you are talking about the bearings in the direct drive, unfortunately no. Those are sealed into the assembly and cannot be replaced.
Great job as always. John
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for the video. Long haired woman with this vaccum... LoL
Thanks for watching, I'm so glad it was helpful!
How do I get the end caps of the roller?
Thanks!
@@HouseOfVacuums I will try again thank you
Great info. Thank you.
Can you tell us what size is the blue screw driver? I tried everything and that damn screw won't loosen.
It is a T10 Torx. Hope that helps!
Wait... did you just say this "wasn't a vacuum particularly suited for this household based on the amount of hair I'm seeing?" Wow.
Thanks!
Thank you. You helped me.
The model number is actually UP20 for the Ball Animal 2
You are correct and I keep forgetting to update the title. On the to-do list!
