@@maggie6479 glad to see you mentioned that! I 100% agree with enjoying shows with not too many surprises. That’s why I find myself rewatching shows like Phineas and Ferb, Psych, Curious George, The Office, and Malcolm In The Middle. Episodic shows that have continuity but don’t throw your entire expectations for a curveball are some of the most relaxing and enjoyable things on tv in my opinion.
Thanks for this presentation! I watch Star Trek series and movies over and over (and over) again. It gives me some comfort that there is a REMOTE POSSIBILITY that humanity may actually reach that level of sophistication.
They certainly go together. Just recently rewatched Firefly after a long gap and it made me feel so much more hopeful for the future. Also, yes I cried when Wash became a leaf on the wind 🍃😭
A few years back, there was a social media outrage about a Netflix employee who had made fun of a customer for rewatching (over and over) a Hallmark movie about a commoner marrying a prince. I always felt like that was a huge violation of privacy and public shaming, even though it was anonymous. It continued to give me a sense of unease when rewatching things I enjoyed. This talk makes me feel much better about this phenomenon.
I appreciate him pointing out that sometimes you see new things when you rewatch, because as an adhd person I usually rewatch to get more of the fine details😅
That’s exactly what I was commenting, I have ADHD and he pointed exactly what I do when I rewatch… I hyper focus after watching a few times… This is a beautiful point of the ADHD brain
As do I with inattentive adhd. I rewatch movies and tv and pick up a bunch of new things from it and appreciate it more than before. Happens with music too. I focus on different instruments on relistens, on different people in the music videos, different vocals, so many things.

I've explained to people that I haven't watched much new tv because of my anxiety, and it's easier for me to consume familiar content...and most of the time I get pitying or confused looks followed by a quick and awkward change of topic. It's nice to hear some validation for my choices.
I use it as background noise. It helps me to focus on what I am doing such as writing. Or I play the shows I have watched a number of times while I am sleeping because it calms me down to sleep. If I haven’t watched it, it can’t stay in the background. I need to see what is going on.
I fall asleep every night to tv shows I’ve watched hundreds of times. I need to have something playing and this way, I don’t have to watch - I know the scenes by heart.
When I couldn't walk or leave the house due to an injury I found Parks & Rec. I lived far away from friends and family so I rarely got visitors so the show was an instant comfort when I felt lonely or useless. I now rewatch it whenever I'm feeling down. I took a break from rewatching an old favourite to see what had dropped on TH-cam 🤣 Thank you for this. Some bit inside me just let go of some secret shame.
There's also the perspective of preferring to watch a great episode of a great TV show (in my case, I spy, Star Trek, MASH, WKRP) over a possibly mediocre new show. Great writing is great writing, whether it's a book, movie, graphic novel or TV show.

There’s a series in the UK called ‘Hadleigh’ dating from the 1970’s which is now on TH-cam. For some reason I can’t explain, one episode in Series 4 has me stuck on ‘repeat watch’ - it really is most odd. Limerence?
Wow! I could listen to his voice forever. It's so calming. I re-watch stuff all the time, I tend not to re-read books. I do always try to add new stuff though.
Doctor Who! Since it’s about traveling through Time and Space, starting back at the beginning when you finish somehow makes sense. Both classic and current.
In 2021 I watched The Dirt around 2,800 times (I once calculated it as a joke, but didnt tell anyone). It was a very very dark time for me, and for whatever freaking reason, having that in the background during that season even when I wasn't consciously watching it, it kept me grounded. I made it

I'm sorry. I must be from Mars. The nostalgia of living the moments of life where whatever caused it's reliving, points to a happier moment viewed in some surprising self awareness, that triggers positive personal memories, was my diagnosis of myself for wanting to relive that moment by a marker, be it a TV show or a smell of a perfume.

I wouldn't say rewatching is a relatively new phenomenon due to streaming. I've watched my 3 favourite movies as a kid - Beauty and the Beast, The Next Karate Kid and Power Rangers, the Movie - over 40 times on video tape.
I researched previous seasons of LOST every summer on DVDs before the new season so I could understand new shows. For several years I watched it once a year because I wanted to figure out if the ending made sense somehow. It never did. This year, I'm watching again because I missed the familiar characters and the quirky plot.

Stargate SG-1, XFiles, Phineas and Ferb, and The Sound of Music. I have probably watched them each hundreds of times (at least, specific episodes in the shows, minus P&F cause I just found that one!)
I agree about two many choices. I’m blind and up until 2008, I had to wait sometimes years to have a book either onAudible or in braille to read. I would get five books a week from my local talking book library. Sometimes I would read them all, sometimes they weren’t very interesting, but the anticipation of them showing up in the mail was amazing. I don’t have that now except the anticipation of waiting for them to upload one to the Braille and audio reading download program so I can download and read it. My favorite author of course is not hugely popular, at least not enough to suit me because they waste no time getting James Patterson books on the website, which I liked his older books but I don’t care for anything he writes now so with my author sometimes it takes forever to get one of his books to download. I wouldn’t trade the Braille and audio reading download program to what I used to have, but I do agree with the choices perception. And the same with trying to find something to watch. Also, when they canceled all my children, well I still haven’t gotten over it. I have not watched the network ABC since it was canceled, and it was like losing family members as I had watched it for 30 or more years.
I used to rewatch MASH, recently, I have been rewatching Terry Pratchett t.v. movies. I have read many, many books and articles, but I still go back to LOTR and the Bible. 😊 (and Anne McCaffrey, David Brin, Asimov, Journey to the West)
Okay, this explains why I'm replaying Skyrim (a story driven video game), but now explain why I'm still playing Galaga 40 years later. Good talk, might watch it again one day.
I wonder if someone in early stages of dementia, who has trouble leaning/remembering new things, would really enjoy watching favorite shows (every episode) & movies because they remember some things (comforting), some things could be surprising but overall they love it cuz they already loved it. In later stages, for a caregiver, it would be nice to know a part of them is enjoying it cuz they already expressed they did, even if they don't remember most of it.
What is too much rewatching? I think it obviously is a matter of comfort to begin with. But when does rewatching become obsessive compulsive disorder? You can't stop.
I like things that are comfortable but i repeat a lot because i work from home with lots and lots of downtime. I keep my tv on (along with lamp etc) on to help troubleshoot if things arent working right but in the meantime it is a lovely distraction because I sit around and wait for calls and chats as a thiiiiiiiiiird shiiiiiift customer service agent. Theres not a whole lot i can do to distract myself. So i watch a loooooooot of tv but quite passively. The rewatching comes in because i do get work sporadically and if im trying to enjoy something new or follow a storyline its frustrating to get interrupted. If its somwthing ive seen a hundred times then i can jump in and out. I imagine this is the same for people who watch rerund while they are cooking or cleaning or rocking their babies to sleep. You want something that doesnt require your full attention.
I like to rewatch 1940 and 50s stuff on videos they would have watched as teens, for teaching food, cleanliness, dating and such. Or BBC on 1940s war rationing videos. Up to date stuff people camping in their vehicles or tents.
It soothes my PTSD to rewatch a program with no surprises. I don't get anxious about the outcome.
Exactly. Particularly old shows. Less drama, less anxiety.
Me too esp suspense and horror. I like a twisty storyline, but I don't like the first time. Then when I know what's going on, it's great.
I can completely relate to that

Theres not a whole lot i can do to distract myself. So i watch a loooooooot of tv but quite passively. The rewatching comes in because i do get work sporadically and if im trying to enjoy something new or follow a storyline its frustrating to get interrupted. If its somwthing ive seen a hundred times then i can jump in and out. I imagine this is the same for people who watch rerund while they are cooking or cleaning or rocking their babies to sleep. You want something that doesnt require your full attention.
Labyrinth and Princess Bride. I can watch those over and over. And Children of the Corn and Sense8.
Great talk❤❤❤❤
I watched the Sopranos so many times I can’t anymore.
So in other words... "we have to go back, Kate! WE HAVE TO GO BACK!"
I'm rewatching Better Call Saul for the third time lol
I like to rewatch 1940 and 50s stuff on videos they would have watched as teens, for teaching food, cleanliness, dating and such. Or BBC on 1940s war rationing videos. Up to date stuff people camping in their vehicles or tents.
Amen to that!!!
I've watched this so many times
Fraiser . Every night before bed or if I don’t know what to watch
I keep rewatching Ghost Whisperer
I do this with Ghibli movies and my favorite shows. It brings me a lot of comfort and has during tough times the last six months or so. 💜
My comfort movie is SAW 3, unironically.
Big Bang Theory
Yes!
Nice!
I don’t see any Outlander viewers. I have also read ALL the books multiple times, even though Star Trek is ALWAYS on!😁
I can watch Severance a million times
Rewatching Grimm…..🤷🏼♀️
My favorite yearly rewatch is wandavison
Oh, great! Thanks for describing one neurotic behavior I don't have!!!
