Thank you! Since the pins are pretty small one side usually dries within a day a day and a half. Then i just turn it over and do the other side. With UV resin you can actually dry it in a few minutes with a uv light
Awww thank you! I would love to but I don't have a kiln . And with air dry clay it is not considered food safe. I would love to take a ceramics course in the future and explore this are a bit more :D
thank you for posting this! im planning to make some clay magnets and found this very useful!! was thinking of superglueing the magnet on but might use your resin trick with the clasps hehe. is there a difference between using white acrylic vs white gesso to prime before painting? i ask bc i have white acrylic but not gesso :'(
Thank you for your kind comment. There is no difference really. Gesso is just a bit more grainy i would say then acrylic . But they both work just as well
I bought the Clay because of you and LOVE IT Thank you so much! Do you know if there is a way to put dried real flowers on top of air dry clay and then glaze it without the flowers getting yellow? I am scared of Using resin because it is very toxic, do you know any alternative? For now I use clear nail polish but it Gets yellow After a while ;(
Wow I am so happy to hear that! I think you could try using a water based varnish instead of resin. I use a gouache gloss varnish from Maimeri. Maybe try that if resin seems too difficult for you
your video is amazing! do you think that if i use epoxy resin on a clay ashtray i’ve made it will make it safe to use? i know regular polishes aren’t fireproof so you can’t light cigarettes off on them as it will leave a stain and it isn’t that safe. do you think the epoxy resin will be the best option for coating in this case?
I wouldn't be able to answer that question as I don't know that much about resin and it's fireproof level. Maybe look up fireproof varnishes for ceramics if you do want to create an ashtray :D
Thank you! I attached the pin using the resin actually. and it is very stable once the resin had dried :D. I find it works even better then any glue I have tried
Hi, I really love your video it’s very inspiring 🤗 anyway I want to ask, what is the advantage of using resin? is it for durability to become a less fragile pin? looking forward to hearing the answer, thank you in advance! 😊
It also seals it to make it water resistant/proof, some air-dried clays will reabsorb water if you forget and leave them on your clothes in the wash. Blessings!
Thank you so much! I store it by wrapping it up in a lot of cling foil and then add it in a zip lock bag. The thing is you want to prevent any air from reaching it
hi! yes. i usually coat one side let it dry and the next day i coat the other side. with UV resin the process is faster as you can cure the resin under a UV light
You video has been the most helpful I have found. But, I have a clay paw print from a furbaby that has passed away. I am trying to be really careful with it since it is the only print I have from her. But, do I need to do a base coat of acrylic paint or can I just do a layer of epoxy resin? Thank you!
Hi Kyrie. I am so sorry about. Your furbaby. You dont necessarily need a base of acrylic paint but sometimes resin and varnishes tend to turn the clay a bit yellow. Adding a base coat prevents that from happening as it acts like a barrier between the clay and resin. It really depends . But if you want to decorate it i would recommend you add a base coat just in case . Hope this helps
hello! I have a question, is there any update with this 3 pieces? Is it yellowing a lot? because I’ve been considering to glaze my clays with 2 parts resin instead kf UV Resin because it’s so expensive, but I’m scared that 2 parts resin will yellow a lot overtime. thankyou!
So far it has not had any yellowing. If you are worried about yellowing I also sometimes use a gouache gloss varnish from maimeri. It works beautifully. I however have no experience with UV resin. But i would love to try it
You should let it dry before applying the paint. :D however it is not a necessary step. I use it only to prevent any yellowing from the varnish or resin
I have a question. Do your pins become waterproof after pouring resin. I'm considering between air dry clay and polymer clay cause I have heard that air dry clay is not waterproof when it dried. Hope you reply me :>>
Hi there! Yes the pins do become waterproof after coating them in resin. I actually made a mixing palette also from air dry clay and sealed it with resin and i can easily wash it and clean the paint off it in lukewarm water. But indeed air dry clay is not waterproof when it is dry. Hope this helps
Hey! I used this hack but the resin is taking more than a day or two to completely dry, even after 5 days its still a little sticky. Can you please help me with this?
Not sure why it's taking so long for it to dry. It dries faster if you leave it out in UV light. So if you have a source of sunlight then it should dry faster if you leave it there :))
I think you could try adding some water to it and kneading it. But from my experience air dry clay once it comes into contact with air and starts hardening there really is no going back. I would just buy a new block
Thank you so much for this video! It really helped me! I tried for the first time on my airdry clay and after a while the resin turns yellowish :( has this happened to you before?
It has not happened to me. Try to keep your resin out of the sun before using it. That usually helps. And try to get the mixing ration as accurate as possible . I hope this helps
hm can i ask a question? how much resin (maybe in ml or grams,...) do you pour at once for how many pins?? im afraid i will pour too much and waste the remaining. hope that you can answer
I try to use as little as possible. I use a small scale and try to use max 3 5 grams of resin with 1.5 - 2.5 grams of hardener. This should work fine for small pieces such as pins
You do! it's just the way the video is edited probably that mislead you. But I usually do the back leave it to dry wait around a day and then do the back
Yes the air dry clay does dry by itself in 24-48 hours. The resin depending on the one you get can dry by itself of if you get the UV one it's best to have a uv light to cure it
Hiya! I suggest using UV resin instead of epoxy resin. You don't have to worry about resin/hardener ratio, it's more safer and it only dries when you put it in sunlight or under a UV light ^^ I would also like to ask: where do you buy your clasps? I've been looking for them all around and I can't find any :(
No, UV resins or 2 component epoxy resins are not heat resistant. I don't expect them to instantly catch on fire when you push a hot cigarette against a resin coated surface, but it will probably damage the material with burn marks, discoloration and deformation.
I would suggest then to use acrylic paint. That once it is dry it will be set. With gouache it can be a bit tricky depending on what resin you are using
Working with resin without gloves (both hands) and an airmask is very dangerous and should not be shown like this. It could be very dangerous to use it at home. Maybe you could use other components for your nice pins?
Thank you for the advice. I will be more careful with it. However I mixed a very small amount and from my understanding the two components are not toxic . It's just the reaction from mixing them. I used just one glove as with the other I used the stick for adding the resin on the pins. And I was very careful as to not let it touch the skin. I have used varnish until now but I wanted to give resin a try as i love the glossy finish and that i can attach the clasp easier to the back.
no you don't need to add water to resin. it depends on the type of resin you want to use. there is the 2 part resin in which you have to mix 2 components and the regular UV resin which usually comes premixed. leaving it out in the sun speeds up the drying process
Thank you so much for clearing everything in one video
