Thank you for writing a summery. I’m just starting out with resin, but it’s the crystal kind. I’ve been doing it in my garage with a respirator said to protect against low to medium level of fumes. I think that should be okay, since I am able to leave the area after I am done to let the fumes dissipate.

@@emmakjaersgaard2894 - be sure to use a CFM calculator. This helps you to determine what kind of fan to use as an exhaust to get the fumes out of your garage. Even if you are in an open space such as a garage those fumes are not regular fumes they stay around even as your project cures it releases fumes. A CFM calculator measures your room and provides what type of exhaust fan to use that will release all of those fumes and restore a clean air quality level in your space...

Can you tell me whether or not it's safe to use silica crystals to dry fresh flowers in? I wanted to do a few. Not to sell. Just to make as decorations and put in shadow boxes. I know it's dangerous to use in excess. If I use a mask and gloves, is it ok to use once in a while? Also, is it ok to do it with the window open? I imagine outside would be dangerous because wind could blow crystals around. Thoughts?

Whether it'd be super glues, bondo, cleaning supplies, acids, epoxies, plastics and so on. 3D printing emits dangerous fumes, and people have no clue. He always stressed the importance of ventilation and protection. Unfortunately the reason he stressed safety to me is that he never took those precautions himself during those previous decades and he was terminally ill, and he didn’t want someone else to make the same mistake he had made. Its only about $20-30 dollars, and honestly (not to sound rude or obnoxious whatsoever) but resin and supplies often add up to more than just a respirator, saving the money to put it towards one is very beneficial.

When I first started working the signs on the chemicals said “may be hazardous” as I continued to work the warnings changed and then there was the poison skull. I was 35. My mother had cancer. I realized I had to get out of the industry and was able to go back to school and retrain for a new career. Fifteen years later I got cancer. Had chemo, surgery and radiation. It’s a miracle I’m still alive. Nothing is more important than our health. We can’t go back and only move forward and educate and empower others. Your contribution here is beyond fantastic. Never a word about safety, closed windows and shut doors with a roomful of people soldering, and lots of the students had never soldered before. A little education and airflow would have gone a long way.
“Soldering with lead (or other metals used in soldering) can produce dust and fumes that are hazardous. In addition, using flux containing rosin produces solder fumes that, if inhaled, can result in occupational asthma or worsen existing asthmatic conditions; as well as cause eye and upper respiratory tract irritation.”

It is a non toxic epoxy alternative. You can join "crystalac" Facebook groups to hear from people that use it. It's skin safe and everything. It is recommended (as will all things) to wear a mask when you sand to not inhale all the shavings/dust.
No gloves or anything required. There are also TH-cam videos. I specifically use it for tumblers but it can be used anywhere epoxy can. It is thinner and requires more coats but it dries faster too. You can do the next layers after 4 hours.
There is no mixing involved, it comes in a tub that you use from as is.

I bought a respirator that day bc I used to use spray paint all the time. I’ve been worrying so much about all the people out here making resin things with no masks.

When I stepped inside, I choked for air and asked how anyone could sit in a shop all day long with the fumes. She said “oh that’s just the acrylic” I had to wait outside. And the shop was super tiny. Most nail shops I’ve been to since then don’t follow proper PPE rules, no masks, no ventilation, just acrylic fumes and vibes.

For folks who get nails done..if you can smell them they do NOT have adequate ventilation. The health inspector only cares about nailing unlicensed immigrants, they don't care about unsafe salons. This goes for chemical hair services too.
Yes a salon won't be odorless but it shouldn't be unpleasant or overpowering. Like how your hospital smells clean but not like an open bleach bottle.
Even if each station has a fan..does it exhaust outside? It's supposed to. Look up, so you see a vent..no then the ventilation may not be adequate.
My info is a bit out of date and I worked in an upscale salon not a discount mart. Each station or pair if back to back , should have a vent to the outside. That used to be state law where I practiced but I quickly saw most salons just turn on a bunch of fans and blow it around the room with 1 or no vents to the outside.
Also if they use methyl methacrylate (mma) run away. Yeah it's cheap and bonds really well and you'll hear plenty of people swear it's fine but unless you like risking your fingers or losing your nail or sensation in your fingers just skip it.

This is very unfortunate. Hope for a fast recovery. People do not even move to a newly built house and it is better to wait for at least 3 years to make sure that the house has gone through three season changes and give the time for all the toxic fumes in every nook and cranny of the industrial materials were evaporated, but still, until 5-10 years, they give off fumes, so people who are an immune-compromised response to that sensitively. Much of this toxicity manifests itself later in one's life in the form of major diseases such as cancers, etc., if not right away as the body remembers and accumulates abuses unless one regularly cleans it with a healthy whole foods diet, fasting, exercise, etc. I cannot imagine dealing with epoxy but if one has to for whatever reason, it has to be done for a short period of time with special masks, full body protection, outdoor with max ventilation (perhaps, fan blowing), and then, the industrially produced masks were not necessarily safe either, as they can give off toxicity themselves, so better yet, stay away from it. We already live in a seriously contaminated environment, no need to add more intentionally. Just hearing you speaking closeup space with epoxy poured everywhere, sounds like hell to run away from....I am certain that you will receive quickly if you put your body through a good healthy path via diet, etc. then it will heal itself. Our body is miraculous in that way.

I started joining groups for dice making and was amazed at the number of people that don't use proper ppe. I'd comment on posts where people weren't being safe to warn them, as some people did this as their sole business and you can develop allergy at any time. I got kicked from so many groups for it, but health is so much more important than anything. Also a horrible fact: a lot of epoxy takes up to 40 days to cure. Well it's been 5 years since you've posted this video and I am so glad that I found this. I am 71 years old and am a self creator of miniature houses, paint pictures, etc. and had an idea to make a clock for a friend to display in her coffee shop. I was going to encase coffee beans in epoxy and have the clock at the top, like a small grandfathers clock. I live in a small apartment with hardly any ventilation except windows and sliding doors. I have COPD and this video just saved my butt! God bless you and I hope you are feeling good by now.

I just randomly came across this (it was recommended to me). I am so glad I watched this video. I'm starting to get into resin (haven't started yet) and I was about to do it in a non-ventilated space (probably not with proper gear, either). Thank you for putting this out for everybody, you've definitely helped newbies like me stay safe and avoid life-risking mistakes 💜

I genuinely thought it was common sense to wear safety gear when working with epoxy. I'm building my supplies so I can work with it, and my respirator is one of the first things I bought.
I know I can't work with it inside my home because I have pets: dogs, cats, and rabbits... all inside my home. My husband is making me a space outside on our porch to work with my epoxy resin. I've not started yet because I'm waiting for that to be finished, but I've already planned several projects.
