I've never seen the prayer method of pulling. I have been struggling with throwing, and I think you just helped me to realize that my clay is too hard. I could never understand why everyone looks so at ease while coning up and centering, while I'm having to squeeze the clay like it owes me money. Fingers crossed, your tips will help me. Thank you.

I watched this a couple of days ago and I could not wait to get into my studio. I have had my hands in clay for over 10 years, just a hobby potter. I have watch many, many videos and no one has ever opened a piece like you. Today was my turn to give it a try and I am so happy to report, success! It was really easy. I have struggled with opening and having the piece become off center. And the 6:00 prayer, worked terrific. Thank you for your great instructions and please continue. I live in Twisp, WA, Methow Valley, foothills of the North Cascades.

Learning that a piece you have just thrown is not precious and that you can cut it open to see how well you did is hard to accept but can be really helpful. After all, if you did it once you can do it again.
Ooooh I’m so excited to try the pray at 6 move! I’m new and struggling big time with cylinders, I can make bowls like no one’s business but can’t get the volcano shape going, the move looks like a game changer. I’ve watched a TON of videos and yours is the first one I’ve seen do that. Subscribed!

What a great video, where were you when i started adult ed ceramic classes?, the one of many great tips i am definitely going to try is the 'pray at 6', it levels the thickness of the wall and moves it up as well, Brilliant, why have i never see this before? did your teacher make you take a vow of silence lol i like your teaching style. Im still attending the classes, once a week and i love it
Thank you!! It’s funny because I’ve been alone in my basement throwing for so long I just assumed everyone prayed at 6 o’clock. It is such a great way to get clay up off the wheel which is tricky for beginners. As I’ve thrown more I basically do something similar but not always as formal with my hands. Sounds like you have found some great classes, that’s awesome 👏
You are an excellent teacher and person! I am a retired psychology teacher who has always loved Clay! Weirdly, I love the smell of clay and glaze,not underglaze though. My daughter commented to me recently about the smell of my pottery studio and how locked in her memory it is. I love it too, I’m not a gardener but I think it must be the same as they feel when you smell fresh soil. And yes, underglaze is just not the same :). I do make my own plaster bats and I’ve been wanting to make a video on how to do that, it just requires getting to the ceramic supply store which for me is a little over an hour away, but once I do I’ll make a video on it for sure! This xideo tutoral is just perfect. I'm just teaching gricving to my students and i'm sharing this with them. One thing is just different in my teaching. Banning rings. I assume you're spinni ng åorclain clay. Thank you very very much❤❤❤😊
Thank you! I have to give credit to all my teachers, but I think I’ve compiled all the best tips I got from them. I would also ban rings, I usually don’t have one on, and if I so its just my silicone wedding band. I usually notice right away and it bugs me anyway. The other thing that is hard for students (girls mostly) is cutting their nails! Gah, so tragic. I do use a porcelain, it’s from Laguna here in the US. So glad you enjoyed the video and hope it helps your students too!
What is that green thingy that is holding your tools. Not quite a beginner, but do have a problem picking up tools with 'goopy' hands. Have used a small ball of clay but like your thingy better. Thanks.
I love the color of your clay. Does it fire white? Is it a commercial brand? I throw with a mid fire (cone 7) speckled clay that's a tan-ish color with black speckles when fired.
Thanks! It does fire white, I wouldn’t say a stark white but a lovely off white. I love it, it’s a mid rage clay body too. It’s called #16 Porcelain from Laguna if you have access to their clay bodies I would definitely give it a try. I really love the look of speckled bodies too, I’ve just been on a porcelain kick for a while and tested all my glazes on it so hard to change now. Thanks for the comment!
I haven't thrown with porcelain yet. I've been wanting to give it go. I don't know if I can get Laguna locally. I do get my regular clay locally. I'll have to see what it cost to have some shipped. Thanks for the info.
I’d bet your regular clay supplier has something comparable so I’d check there first! At least get a bag of some kind of porcelain just to see if you like throwing with it. Some folks don’t but I really do!
Really enjoyed the video. When I watch potters online, it seems like the clay flows with their hands without a lot of effort. When I get on the wheel it feels like I'm having to force the clay to move. Any thoughts on why that might be?
First, if you are just getting started know that potters that have been on the wheel for a long time can certainly make it look easy, and their movements are very smooth… but also there is usually a lot of editing in videos to keep them to a certain length 😁 so they may be very sped up. But aside from that I would think about how stiff your clay is when you start, it sounds like your clay might be pretty hard. Maybe even try another clay body if you have the ability. Give it time and I’m sure you’ll start moving that clay around with ease too!
