Another great video, Lisa!! I had a couple of thoughts - once you have the drill holes and while it’s still a bit wet, you could use a pin tool to mark out a centred outside edge and then trim to that so that your bat isn’t wonky and is instead fully centred while throwing. Another idea I had is that you could use a sharpee and mark out certain measurements/circles on the bat so you can do certain sized plates etc. and gain consistency.
I've been using small square bats that do fit on bat pins in the corners but are only about 9"x 9". Since I work at a community studio, I love having small bats that don't take up so much community space. I love the idea of making a bunch of small circles since they stick so firmly with the bat mate. Thanks for this great idea and the link to the volume calculator.
Hi Lisa, I love this video and appreciate your channel. I'm a learning potter (less than a year). I have my studio in my garage (heat and AC installed).
Hi We used those plaster discs like 40 years ago in my school in Venezuela.....I did pottery in the school at that time and I learned how to make those discs
Using drip trays as molds. Ingenious. While making up some 18" plywood bats I solved the problem of centering by drilling out the holes first at exactly 10" apart (my pin spacing) then put the blank on the wheel and while spinning marked out a circle and then trimmed to that circle.
Ohhh that’s a great strategy! I was thinking there had to be a better way I wonder now if I could have gotten them spot on with your approach. I want to crest the pin recess on all my existing bats now so I’ll give it a try! THANK YOU!!!
Thank you for your detailed and easily followed instructions. I think I’ll make some smaller ones too for plates. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made divots in the bottoms of my plates from wiring off. You just saved me much time and heart ache. Thank you. I subscribed too.
Lisa, so happy I found you!!! Thank you for sharing your wonderful incites and enthusiasm!!! I treasure your trove of information!!! Judy from Olympia, WA 👍🤗
great detailed video for a plaster using newbie, me, i would like to use plaster bats as wiring off is my nemesis no 2, it comes close to my glazing phobia, long story short, ive messed up some nice pieces ive thrown with bad glazing,. plaster bats are expensive to buy so this is a great tool for me to make my own. Ive seen other potters spray i think it was alcohol to encourage the bubbles to raise and pop by spraying a fine layer, other have just wet sanded the 'top' smooth just to flatten it how you want it to be. Congrats on your subscriber numbers, well done girl, youve got this x
Oh thank you so so much, now that you mention it I think I’ve heard of people spraying g the tops too to avoid bubbling and keeping it smooth, I should have thought to watch a. Video or two myself 😂. Glazing was always my nemesis too but I created some systems that have helped. I’ll have to do some more videos on that soon. Thanks again for watching and commenting!
@Lisa.Riland anything you can share about glazing would be great. I throw all term and leave the glazing till last, by then I'm a wreak, which I know doesn't help. We have in class some new underglazes, they are bright and colourful and I'm not afraid of them, then just transparent over the top, what could go wrong!!!, till your next video x
Awesome job and I just love your videos! Wish we were neighbors and I’d come bug u in your studio. 😉 ps. I was really hoping you were going to make holes for the bat pins. 😍
Thanks for sharing! That is just what I needed. I find that my wood bats warp and when I wire pots off the wheel, and they can end up being unlevel on the bottom if they even have an intact bottom. Again, thanks very much for this video. -Liana
Awesome! I'm curious about your studio space. do you have shower curtains hung? I'm considering a studio in my basement, but i don't want to destroy the old brickwork. This could be a wonderful compromise. Thanks for the tip! I love the plaster bats I bought. My plates come out perfectly. Making some would definitely be easier on the wallet.
Thank you! I do have very long shower curtains hung for right now, but in a couple weeks I’m getting real walls, yay! I am in an unfinished basement and just used the curtains to make it more comfy, but the down side is you can hang anything on the walls 😕. I’m also going to I’ve some things around so I’ll document it and show everyone the before and after!
I’m taking note of all of the special touches looking forward to the time when I can set up my own studio. Thanks for the excellent detailed instructions for making plaster bats I know this will come in handy in the future. By the way, what is your system for protecting your pipes?
You are so welcome! I currently use a gleco trap under my sink but it does have some limitations so I’m planning to build my own clay trap sometime next year. I’ll definitely document it when I do 😊
That’s actually a great idea! I don’t see why not. It might not end up as perfectly circular as it’s more flexible than the drip trays I used but I think the plaster would pop out just fine.
Sprits the surface bubbles with mentholated spirit
Ohh thank you!!
Yes I’ve seen people spray with alcohol once it’s ready to be set and bubbles ‘knocked’ out.
Like rubbing alcohol? 🤷♀️
Funny my brain was thinking vodka 🤣

Thanks again.!!! Love videos God bless take care!!
You are very welcome, thank you for watching!!
Thanks for this!! You make it easy peasy!
You are so welcome! Glad I could make it look easy at least, I still feel like I make such a mess when I do plaster 😂
Where'd you get the green tool holder of your wheel? I really enjoy your videos.
Oh thank you! I actually found it on Amazon and there should be a link in the video description! It works sooo well 😊 thanks for watching!
The flexi bucket you used to mix the plaster, would it be possible to use as a mold and just leave the plaster in it?
That’s actually a great idea! I don’t see why not. It might not end up as perfectly circular as it’s more flexible than the drip trays I used but I think the plaster would pop out just fine.
1000gram (=1kg) water is 1 liter water. That might make it easier to pour the right amount.
Ahh yes 😂 another great point
@@Lisa.Rilandeasier for us that live with the metric system 😁
It is a better system no doubt!
Spray some alcohol to pop bubbles and get a smothersurface
Thank you!!! I will try that next time for sure
