i just got my saint pedro back, its planter box is on a pallet, a 80 or so year old cactus root ball with a stump over half meter wide, i got from an auction from a house renovation(, grows over a hundred pups a year which grow almost 1 meter, over 100 meters growth a year!! the thing weighs tons(with the planter box). i just got it back from foster care while i was finding a house. its been neglected and in the shade so everything was skinny, i've cut it all back to the original stump and now the root ball has had 8 years to settle after i dug it up. now its time i re-pot it into a beautiful wooden pot and supercharge it! lots of pumice to lighten up the pot, something solid for the roots to grab at the base
im going to watch many of your videos :) i want to do this properly so its set for many years to come.
ihe south side is under full shad so might try grafting peyote onto that :)
i have a few types that flower around the same time so i want to try the seed thing and see if i have some nice hybrids to graft, turn my gaint cactus into a graft of all my types of cactus.
I have some beautiful fast growing blue ones that have the most brutal dangerous spikes, would be nice if some of the seeds had less brutal spikes for a more pet friendly version
i get into carving some of the older ones, writing dates into then when i get them and making random patterns, poor things, but i make up for it with lots of love
Sounds like an amazing plant, I wouldn't like to be the one having to move it! With so many pups, you could get into using them as grafting stock. Thanks for the kind words regarding the channel! 😊

so, what i have learned from you has gone into action! i have started my first attempt at grafting, made 7 grafts of Bolivian torch and 1 graft of Peruvian torch(thank you for your videos to help identify them!). trying grafting the top cut and the sideways technique. you also helped me spot a "PC" in my collection(im in New Zealand so is a mixture of the worlds cactus here)
a technique i am trying for grafting is rubber bands etc but also trying out using the long needle sharp spikes of the peruvian torch to pin some of the grafts into place and sit a good sized rock on top (for sideways grafts), looks nicer then rubber bands, will update you on success rate if your are interested :)
Great video Jerry, and it's nice to see the tips from an expert on grafting on Pereskiopsis - I've had some good success but not degrafted any yet. Hopefully next year some of my Trichocereus seedlings will be large enough to use as root stock too - I tried one that's a year old (I needed to rescue an Astrophytum seedling that lost its roots to fungus gnats) but it failed first time. So I recut and regrafted - not sure it's worked this time either. Perhaps they need to be bigger to work reliably.
Of my own (limited) experience with grafts on Trichs, I can tell you that, yes, size does seem to matter (lol). Whenever I have used stock that was fat and fast growing, the growth has been the most vigorous.

Thanks for your work. I have grafted with many pereskiopsis as root stock for lophos and trics. I find its best to use very young tiny seedlings for both. Maybe a week old. works best. Letting the peres dry out a bit is important to get them to stick together. I seldom need to apply pressure, almost never. A straight cut on both is important. A better graft stock is a dwarf variety of Optunia because you don't have to degraft, and you can bury it completely under the soil. Best part is you dont have to deal with the terrible micro spines of peres.
btw a funny graft you can do is take the root portion of the baby lopho you were going to throw out and graft on a pereskiosis scion. It grows so slow and tiny. You can keep them in your collection small and manageable, degraft and root and they will return to normal. I am curious to try this baby lopho root stock with a baby trico scion

Cut your Pere tip in a spear shape and just plunge your graft on it sits better and usually takes without hassle
Thanks for sharing the tip! Julien has actually done that, I think it's called an impale graft. But he told me he prefers the straight cut grafts, because it allows to graft very tiny seedlings.

I would love to get some advice from a fellow trichocereus enthusiast from a cooler climate.
Especially on soil and watering, the advice given online is usually for pretty warm & dry climates.
What is the very first cactus shown with the great notches and seagulls? Is that titan only? Amazing :)
Question if you were to use chemicals to grow it to full size then cut the new growth it should be chemical free correct?
When grafting onto a root stock, would the variety of root stock effect the growth of the new cactus?
For example I’m not familiar with Peresk and what would be considered a mature root stock , for example if you use a dragon fruit as a root stock a mature stock would be around 1 year old maybe 2 ?

Yes and yes. Peres is the best pumper. Opuntia gave me very slow growth. You need more established rootstock to graft on bc it will pumb the sicon better. Small rootstocks will work too but they will pump less.
There are people that think grafting stock can change the appearance of the scion new growth because of certain growth hormones.
I have experienced the rootstock watering thing, I grafted to trichocereus sun goddess from a retail store (Home Depot) and because it was seldom watered, it started shrinking and separating from the scion quickly. It plumped up after watering.
Interesting. With the ones I have grafted (Trich on Trich), they seems to stay true to the original as far as appearance goes. What does seem to vary, however, is the width of the scion, and speed of growth depending on how strong (fat and fast growing) the stock is.
