"Penny Dreadful" is a masterpiece--one of the best series I've ever seen. The entire cast is amazing--but two of my favorite characters are Eva Green ("Vanessa") and Helen McCrory ("Madame Kali"/"Mrs. Poole"). They are absolutely MESMERIZING to watch.
Very happy and relieved to know that there is a 4rth season coming but the setting being in The City of Angels circa the 1930’s where most of the olde cast have been confirmed: ew.com/tv/2018/11/01/showtime-penny-dreadful-city-of-angels/
So far, a very well written, imaginative take on stories we all have known and loved for many years. The acting cannot get any better, and the production values are at par with any full length movie. You can tell there is a lot of love given to the show by all those involved. Kudos to you Showtime!
As someone who grew up reading unsugarcoated children's editions of the classics--Dickens, Hugo, Poe, etc--and then as an adult moved on to the original texts themselves, I cannot thank you enough for making this series. I've only seen the first episode, but I'm already in love. It's wonderful to see someone who still appreciates these tales for what they really are rather than what pop culture has made them out to be. As a soon-to-be college graduate who double majored in creative writing and theater, it gives me hope for my own work and my own determination to pass on what I've learned from my artistic ancestors. Thank you.

I watched to see all these great literary characters come together and interact with one another. The fact that Vanessa's in the foreground wasn't what I was expecting. Why bother to write in all these classic characters--not to mention getting the rights to use them--if they're just going to be secondary characters in "The Vanessa Show"? Now if there was a spin-off show with Caliban (Frankenstein's creature) as the main character, I'd totally watch that.

I can NOT believe PD did not win any awards. With Logan writing, Mendes producing, and those phenomenal performances from every character, there is something WRONG with these awards shows. Disgusting. We binged it again last year, 2023, and just finished bingeing it again this year Nov. 2024. Sick and tired of crap that has dragons, sandhills, and backstabbing suits. Glad to see HBO MAX did something superlative in major tweaking of comic book character The Penguin. Crew on this almost as great as PD.
Best horror series never saw! Efficient dialogues, pictures beauty, actor's play, Victorian's vraisemblance, truly frik side, sensuality, can stop watch it. Beginning season 3, episode 1, unspoken word, got to feel it.

And I'm so glad that the got the character of Frankenstein right! Frankenstein was the name of the scientist that created the monster, not the monster itself! I was so sad that when Hollywood made the movie Frankenstein recently, that they made Frankenstein as the monster that the scientist created! So now all the people that see that movie but have never read the book are going to get it wrong!
Candace Garrett this is actually my fav interpretation and best they have done in hollywood. this is how he should be. i have never read the books but in this show he seemed beleivable , creative but also sympathetic.

Josh Hartnett is a great actor and I am pleased to see him acting again after some time without getting involved in any big screen movie. PS: I'm kinda guessing here, but while I watched the first episode I had this feeling about Jack the Ripper being kinda "announced" and I think that Ethan is Jack. Or, he might be a werewolf (like someone said here in the coments), that would be pretty awesome.

John Logan has touched my inner hidden soul that needed to know that someone understands me. Please, please Showtime or Netflix create a second chapter to this creation. It touches upon too many truths not to continue on Netflix as a new series that brings this all back. I want more of this dramatist.
What a gigantic impact the show has had on me - everything about it is fascinating. And add to this marvel my favourite actress Eva Green as the central character and impact would nothing but gigantic 🙂👍!
I am tremendously excited for the series premiere tonight. "Frankenstein" and "Dracula" are two of my favorite works of Gothic Horror and it will be awesome to see new versions of some of the notable Gothic fictional stars and how they interact with each other and new characters. Victorian literature really did reflect the period of exploration and revolution in science, art, and society which the series seems will do splendidly. I hope to read "Dorian Gray" soon, I have never read it yet am intrigued by the story. Vanessa Ives, Malcolm Murray, and Ethan Chandler I can already tell I will like. Cool hearing the cast members reading passages from the novels the series centers on 11:52 to 12:13. This series is going to be scary good and psychologically thrilling :D
I just discovered Penny Dreadful on Netflix. Fantastic series.similar to my love for the Deadwood series. Gone too soon but they stand as the pinnacle of how good television can be.
I remember going to Disney World and a youngster and walked on the back lot of a set. It was a city. I just remember feeling so immersed in that time period. It was astonishing. I could not get over it that day. I was like these actors are so lucky to do what they do. To be able to pretend to be another person. Maybe be in another time period. To dress up in clothes you never would wear otherwise.
and also on the scene with Dorian, during the flashbacks before they kiss, you see a glimpse of that murdered prostitute at the park... haven't watched the last episode, but it would seem he's both werewolf and the Ripper, united in some Jekyll/Hyde dynamics perhaps, being sweet Ethan Dr. Jekyll and the beast/werewolf/Ripper being Mr. Hyde... something to do with Ethan's past in America and the natives
This show was such a masterpiece. I understand Vanessa's ending but I even now, the only thing I can think is that we failed with it. I hope the new show can succeed and have more recognition.
Very ambitious show, and up till now, the writers are up to the task. No sharks are being jumped yet, and the script treats the source material with respect. Also, the acting is absolultely brilliant. No one is phoning it in. If Showtime screws this up like they did with Dexter, we riot...well, I will. lol
i have watched the first episode and it is so gripping . i admit not to being a horror fan i heard about this because i am a fan of Timothy Dalton , so far it is well worth the watch , i am going to catch up with episodes 2 and 3 as soon as i can . . by the way this tv show has quite few James Bond connections. Timothy Dalton played james bond in the late 80's , Sam Mendes directed and John Logan wrote skyfall . Eva Green was in casino royale and Rory Kinnear i think was in skyfall too .
Why did Sembene has to die? I thought they would explore his story. In addition he was on the outside but always observing all. As it now stands, it looks that he was there just to die (and maybe quota). It was not a satisfying end.

Universal have tried several times to reboot their Classic Monster universe? Why didn't they just approach the team who made Penny Dreadful? It had everything plus the period. What did universal have Tom Cruise in a Bad action movie were he was never under threat for one second because he was Tom Cruise. The only drawback to this show was it was too short it has so much scope. I thought the third season seemed rushed and Dracula and Jekyll and Hyde were disappointing.
Simon Russell Beale was my favorite character in the series, he played the part of Ferdinand Lyle and he played the part superbly. I thought the choice for Dorian Grey (Reeve Carney) was terrible. He was by far the weakest actor in the whole series.

Helen McCroy was amazing in all her roles, especially as Elizabeth "Aunt Polly" Gray in Peaky Blinders. Gone way too soon and far too young at 52.

I just watched this and it's very insightful of the characters. It reminds me of League of extraordinary gentlemen meets Van Helsing.

really hard to get me to stick to a show. this one is amazing! I love the Gothic/horror. much better than AMH which I find shallow at best.
