The night this first came out I sat in my living room with headphones on and listened to it about 10 times. I knew then it was a masterpiece from a genius. I knew it was a piece of music much like a classical piece - that is best when full attention is given. A monumental piece. To see the visuals today is so deeply moving and stirring. What an honor to be living during this genius lifetime.
Here I am, 3 years later after the same epiphany you all had and I am still in awe of this whole album. This, in particular, is just magic. It has that PMG/ Lyle Mays influence that I miss so much--fully orchestrated, long form sonic bliss.
When I first listened to this a year ago, I thought it expressed the zeitgeist so clearly, capturing the tension and the sounding of the alarms. Now, I see this video with the images of the Civil Rights movement from the background of my childhood and adolescence in Memphis. It resonates across the years with the strength and uncertainty that cycles throughout human history. There is nothing more evocative than this artistry, expressive and inspiring!
The entire album is social commentary. Pat commented in an interview he wrote this piece, or began writing it, the day after election night of 2016. I get the sense that that day undefined everything we thought America was and that train at the end; feels like something catastrophic is about to hit us. There is so much imagery in the song and this video just ties it all together. Very powerful indeed.
Saw Pat with his new group for 2nd time , in March 20 in Perth Oz -he expressed his overwhelming sadness at Lyle's passing - they must have been like brothers all this time -what a bond they had and created fantastic music together . Will remember Lylle forever in his own music as well as part of PMG .PAT moves on unselfishly nurturing young talent and developing new music as is demonstrated with 'From This Place' . His talent is boundless. R I P Lyle .DJEJ

22 today, I've so many childhood memories of Pat's music. Road trips, being a rascal in my dad's studio, pretending to sleep at night so I could listen to music... Maybe these great musicians will become lesser known over the years, but their legacy will have an impact that won't go away!
After all those masterpieces of the 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's it's almost impossible that he can accomplish yet another masterpiece in the new 20's. I had the blessing of meeting him in Osaka and the only thing I was able to say to him was "THANK you for your music. You've made the world a better place". It was one of the most memorable nights of my life.
This is a beautiful musical composition that reminds us of where Pat Metheny has come from and where he is headed next and we are going along for the ride., I first discovered you because of my mom my first year of college., I'm 64 now and I'm still fascinated by what I'm hearing., it is just that good. I want to thank you for last train home, my mom passed in September 2012 and that was her favorite., and whenever I listen to it now it brings me closer to her and the message you were trying to tell us all when you composed it
So hartening to know his music and appreciated it and passing down to you. It is hard -in a good way- to believe it’s appreciated by young person. Your a wonderful person having his music influence you--so was:is your Mom what. A woman😉!!!
The album is (another) fully certified masterpiece from one of the greatest artists of any era!. In an increasingly noisy, bizarre and mad world, this music gives you escape and hope.
The most epic track of the entire album that not only signifies the return of an old familiar sound that we all know and love but also the beginning of the next chapter in the story of one of the greatest musicians of all time
Beautiful track, but I think Sixty-Six is his greatest piece on this album, and a top of his discography. True Metheny/Mays fans knows the story of Sixty-Six. It's such an amazing journey to listen to that song. The abrupt ending of the piece had me in tears, multiple times in a row. I was beginning to wonder if I could actually listen to the song without getting emotional. It's the most perfect song for avid fans of Mays. But, yes this track is EPIC!!
It is incredible how we can listen and feel the influence of the sounds of Brazil's countryside, notably Minas Gerais state. For those who cannot relate Pat to Brazil, think Milton Nascimento, Clube da Esquina, and so on. Pat, together with Lyle, was one of the first to listen, understand, and play with this beautiful kind of music coming from Brazil in the middle 70s.

The visuals really elevate this song, adding another impressive layer to the workings beneath. I noticed the nice calm clouds in the first more airy parts of the song, then the supercell with its ever developing tornado; then once the cacophony of the train hits at 11:17, we're finally in the eye of the storm. In my mind, since this was inspired by DJT's election win, I always felt that 11:17 would've best been visualized by the image of his win, and what followed afterwards. I like the approach in this video; by using moments from America's not-too-distant past, I think they're showing us that some of these problems haven't really gone anywhere, and we are just rehashing them. Beautiful visual concept for a beautiful song.
I can't believe how Pat's music always makes me feel so vibrant and alive amazing. very few bands make me feel like that. and that's coming from a musician myself.

Is anyone else thinking an "homage to Lyle Mays" when they hear the solo piano and ambient synths? All the musical development that you expect from Metheny and co, is there. Intriguing video with some brave and salient commentary when you consider recent events in history. Indeed the undefined nature of US culture is a catalyst to Metheny's, expansive creativity. Does anyone think "John Adams" when they listen to this, or is that just me? The sustained guitar resonating in the background is also enjoyable and redolent of "Secret Story" and "Imaginary Day".

From France, thank you so much again Mr Metheny, and your companions, for what you give to this world, to be more touched within and ahead, for consciousness and transcendance ❤💫
‘The best’ means for his albums so far, not about his future albums. The tracks in this album easily dwarfs the beauty of his past albums such as ‘first circle’, which I think already another level than other jazz compositions. Hope he lives long enough to gives more masterpeices to the humanity.
Stunning & sobering presentation (We 1/2-way round the globe r similarly reconciling + our past). Sorta hearkens back to that gr8 Group sound. Much to sink teeth into👌

He's never worked an honest day in his life. He lies....but he cannot stop. He's not the only one. Both sides of the aisle do the same thing.
@@brucemoeller I'd trust Biden any day then the alternative...
Pat do you hear me. El mas grande guitarrista de jazz.
Pat, you are an incredibile musician, I spend hours to listen your music and ...I love you !
I have been enjoying "America Undefined" since it came out four years ago. Only recently did I discover the accompanying video. Such powerfully evocative work. Mind=blown
Pat Metheny’s mimic is my inspiration for learning to play the guitar… not that I’ll ever be great at it.
Very intense song. This is a great album. Been listening to Pat since late 70s/early 80s (whenever Wichita Falls came out) and always liked "the group" sound... this brings it back. RIP Lyle.
Thank You Pat for explaining America. This is a trying time in History. I needed to see this. Thank You again.
I'm an African American male. Thank you for just showing the history of what America is. It means alot to show both aspects of what has happened. Good and bad for all races that are here in American and how it was built.
@@maverik0071 We'll get it right! LET US ALL BE PATIENT!
THANK YOU "PAT!" THANK YOU! For showing n. America in its purest form. I wish more musician had your courage.
I am impressed with so many striking scenes and how the composition fit so well. Thank you for continuing to work. Get a Hug from Rio de Janeiro.
God bless America!
Sanchez adds so much
What a statement! I kneel to your patriotism monsieur Metheny.
A truly unforgettable composition in a Jazz harmonic ensemble
This song reminds me another Pat Metheny song : Kin !

Goosebumps!
His music takes me to all the right places .
Awesome masterpiece, which has few equals in the history of music! In special way at the 11 minute! OMG!
😃🎸😉Grande por siempre pat... El mejor guitarrista y compositor del siglo 20 - 21..
Like John Coltrane and a few others , your music reflects a change of how things need not to be.Why cant everyone just get along, no division.
Unfortunately, there is more profit in division...a curse of our capitalist system
Better than a communist curse. If it were the case, we wouldn't have the pleasures of his mastery nor would he have the freedoms of his compositions.
Poignant and astounding.
YES!!!!!!
I doubt that I would have much in common with Pat on a spiritual or political level, but we certainly have a lot in common when it comes to music. Absolutely beautiful song.
I'm listening again to this composition with so much delight, AND i've just watched with more attention to this video, this short film, it is SO powerful! From France, thank you so much again Mr Metheny, and your companions, for what you give to this world, to be more touched within and ahead, for consciousness and transcendance ❤💫
i love you guys
‘The best’ means for his albums so far, not about his future albums. The tracks in this album easily dwarfs the beauty of his past albums such as ‘first circle’, which I think already another level than other jazz compositions. Hope he lives long enough to gives more masterpeices to the humanity.
Had no idea PM had a YT page! sweet. One more way to connect with this incredible artist. Speaks to my soul unlike any other...
Stunning & sobering presentation (We 1/2-way round the globe r similarly reconciling + our past). Sorta hearkens back to that gr8 Group sound. Much to sink teeth into👌
Awesome pat ..
Fantastic, Thank you Pat!
