I'm a part time pro bassist. I met Lyle. Talking with him was an absolute pleasure. But I told him that I could never repay him for what he had added to my life. That was the last tour of the PMG. The Way Up. 15 years ago. Now he's gone and I'm still heartbroken.
That is a wonderful tribute to a genius who did not seem to need the accolades. I imagine he was comfortable in his skin. And yes that once in a lifetime star left way too early and left a phenomenal legacy.
Yesterday (10-02-2020) the genius and extraordinary musician departed from this physical-three-dimensional-temporal plane. It leaves a huge gap that can hardly be filled.
Que mejor manera de recordarle que con este viendo y con la interpretación en directo con Pat de September fifteenth,Lyle ya está en el cielo con Bill Evans,al que le dedicó September fifteenth, pero su música siempre está con nosotros
It will take people who really loved Lyle and his music, his genius, the keep his legacy alive and recognized. I am a guitar player, Pat is the epitome of brilliance for me. However, I think few, outside of PMG fans, realize how very special Lyle was, and how special his music is. He is melodic, creative, and his understanding of harmony is incredible
Fantastic. And yes, Lyle Mays was an outstanding musician. Looking at the complete list of NEA Jazz Masters awards, I am surprised that Lyle Mays was not bestowed that honor. Lyle contributed to Pat's music so much in composition, arrangements and keyboard playing that the NEA should take note, honoring him posthumously.
Rodrigo Tamayo great idea Rodrigo: yes, let’s make Lyle Mays an honorary posthumous NEA Jazz Master. Please email the NEA and suggest it! I am friends with another NEA JM and I’ll suggest it.
I agree with you. Always believed Lyle kept Pat from going off the rails. He was an extraordinary person. He’s great music of his own and with Miss Bonnie for Moses the Lawgiver. He is missed and we’re so fortunate to be Abel to experience him and his extreme talent during our lifetime.
Lyle Mays was great..1 of the best of his era..these guys play instruments the way they were designed for..pure talent, no fluff..they played from the heart not their wallets
When Lyle lets loose at the 8:22 mark, giving absolutely everything he has left to this piece, I defy you not to be moved to tears. Missing his genius more with each passing day.

Sometimes we never really truly appreciate the contributions of the greatest musicians until they have returned home to Source Energy. I always knew that he was present, a member of Pat's group, a creator on a plane of his own, but only now that he has decided to leave us with his absence can I truly appreciate his corpus that he has left us to ponder, to love, to appreciate. This song has been played by me everyday at least 20-30 times and I still can't get enough of it. I have listened to versions by Uwe Karcher, Dr. Guy Shkolnik, Alex Sill on guitar seemingly holding back tears as he played this song, by himself and with Pat' group. I had the pleasure to see him perform at the Greek Theatre in around 1994-1995, the entire show was nothing less than Heavenly. You are missed only in person but we have your catalog to keep us "Close to You".
The Greek Theater is such an amazing place saw Gordon Lightfoot there. I saw Pat and co at the Paolo Soleri Amphitheater quite a few years back, such an incredible night. Sadly the Paolo has been fenced off and is slated for demolition. The Pueblo stated up keep costs as the reason, still there as 3/2021. Will be a sad day when they do.

And there's a video of the PMG playing it where it's titled Close To Home (Mars). I think that's a typo. The author was crediting Mays as the composer; the tune is not called Mars!
Last time my son and I saw Pat was in 2019 at the Admiral in Bremerton WA. Unfortunately, Lyle wasn't performing with him. It was great but something missing. We saw Steely Dan right after Walter Becker passed and Donald Fagen was great but something was missing there as well. Seen PMG many times over the past 40 years. My 19 year old daughter passed away in 2001 and the only thing she asked me to bring to the hospital were her copies of Imaginary Day and Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert. Makes it hard for me to listen to them.

Thanks for your comment friend, the video was in 4k but because of TH-cam restrictions the video was deleted ... I have uploaded the video with some modifications so that they do not return (I hope) to eliminate it. The reasons why the video is not in 4k is because the size in megabytes is very large. The video is simple but it reaches heart... Thanks for your comment

Without reason, I think I become to know why the titile for this song is Mars. And when I am close to home and Mars, I am more feeling alone. How do I get along with this life-long friend? The intro @2:37 in piano solo, I feel like to become to face the Mars without anxiety and pain. Peacefully, I go back to my home embracing the cause of all my inner painful memories. PMG performed this song live in the late 70s and early 80s before Lyle finally recorded a studio version on his first solo album in 1986 where "All music is composed by Lyle Mays". Milton later wrote lyrics to Lyle's melody and renamed the song 'Quem é você?' which appears on Milton's 1994 live album 'O Planeta Blue na Estrada do Sol'. Milton's version is very beautiful too...
Pat vem de outro planeta avançado na música,,, sem considerar o título dessa magnífica música...
Pat Metheny o Avatar da música contemporânea.
Thank you! Tears.
Lyle Mays was to my opinion the best
I got very sad when this video had been deleted, I used to see every night to sleep, and I couldn't find anywhere, the track and the video, I'm very happy that you posted again, I 'd Love the 4k version but I can wait again until you upload again, but Im happy with this video already! Thank you so much!!!!
Thanks for your comment friend, the video was in 4k but because of TH-cam restrictions the video was deleted ... I have uploaded the video with some modifications so that they do not return (I hope) to eliminate it. The reasons why the video is not in 4k is because the size in megabytes is very large.
This video was made when I left a love relationship and I was sad ... Thinking about the universe and listening to this wonderful work calmed my pain and that is why I came up with this video ... The video is simple but it reaches heart...
Thanks for your comment
Good night, sleep tight!
Precioso!

Also with respect and thankfulness to Lyle and the Hjosh, I am going my way as always.
Gorgeous video!
