Lyle is the disciple of Bill Evans. And that's a GOOD thing! While the Metheny-Mays pairing has made some of the greatest music of the last 40 years, and I'm a Metheny fan, I have to admit I always liked Lyle's solos even more than Pat's.
Hard to find many people in real life that have the same feelings about Pat/Lyle and company as I do for almost 40 years, reading all the positive comments in here assure me of my sanity
And yours is the only recent comment on here. I'm with you 100% and now that Lyle's gone, it makes me so sad. I just don't think Pat is the same without Lyle. Sure, he's still great, but nothing can be the same again. Metheny is coming to the State Theater in New Brunswick, NJ at the end of the month (Nov 2021)...it'll be just a trio and I'm sure it'll be great...but I've decided not to go.
Lyle Mays always struck me as a temporary but no less a blessing to the human society. His fragile stature was the first signal, but to me it was compatible with his amazing approach to music and the piano based platform. He commanded it! Tough when he wanted to speak with force and elegant at all times. He was aloof, in his own spiritual space during his moments of improvisation like no one I've ever listened to on piano. Lyle was also comfortable with Lyle so he was able to "push" every musician to answer his own calling in the moment. A musician knows what that means. Lyle Mays leaving was not by accident or prematurity. He was ready for another place on his journey.
How in the. World did I miss your tribute to Lyle Mays? You wrote my feelings and opinions better than I have. There are rare people in this world that leave us with a void that can never be filled. Thank you!!
The other day a friend and I were talking Pat Metheny music. He mentioned that Pat's music was "Too mellow". My response to him was that he needed to take his head off. Get a new one with more room between the ears. This way he would experience the "Whole" spectrum of the Pat Matheny world of wonderful, and beautiful music. Then I popped open a bottle of Jack Daniels, and proceeded to enjoy Pat's music on the rocks. Thanks Pat Matheny and company.
Bad steppin song. Found this song on a list of songs on a steppers cd back in the 90s. This was what prompt me to star listening to the group. One of the baddest jazz group ever. Enjoyed a lot of their music over the years. I give this song an A+.
My kids has named Still life(talking) as the weekend morning music. " You listen to this EVERY saturday and sunday morning!!" Well that is not true but I listen to it a lot still after 30 years!! Saw PMG in Stockholm 1988. Awesome concert!! :-D
These guys were writing the "Book" of jazz improvisation during the 90's! Years from now people will listen to this music to try to understand what life was like during this period...,
When I first heard this piece I envisioned Pat as an attorney pleading (with his guitar) to the Lord to have mercy upon us here on this despair laded planet. Then Lyle pleads his case also on the piano...heart aching, beseeching the Lord to just hear his plea. Then Lyle becomes emboldened and he and Pat both approach the bench of the Almighty for a closing argument. Ultimately, justice is bestowed and we move on.
This piece will turn non-jazz lovers into new fans. The talent oozes out of each note.I look foward to this cut to be an epic score in a block buster film.
My God he touches notes and that becomes gold ! Lyle is in my heart from 1985, what to say….magic and Pat Metheny group sure. Thanks for giving me all that wonderful music and emotions.
What's NOT to like about Pat Metheny? He is the king of jazz fusion and guitar solos. Lyle Mays is probably my new favorite keys player. Even the singers are ownage. SICKKKKKKKK.
Never knew this sounded existed outside my head, when I discovered it did, I discovered the world was larger than I could obviously imagine, been imagining ever since... Saw them in concert in the early 90's...amazing, awesome!
Saw this tour @ an outdoor venue, on a blanket on the lawn, with a picnic basket, a bottle of wine & a full moon. I have never had a better date/evening in my life!!! Metheny on guitar, Mays on Keys/syn, David Blaimires on voice. it doesn't get any better than that!
That was beautifully worded. Lyle was a force of nature and talent and rarely given the praise he deserved. You did it beautifully. Thank you very well written!!❤️
Been thinking about this song a lot. My interpretation is this: The beginning of the song is very hypnotizing and mysterious - almost as if someone/something/some entity(ies) were just starting an equation - the creation of the world. Then come the main melody which feels a lot like a reminiscence for journey to the unknown - how early civilization was trying to figure out stuff, on to the making of an improved society. Then Lyle's solo - it's the introduction of the "sophistication" era where we recognized things that separate humans from other animals, realization that human is the superior species, and (maybe) some people thinking they are superior than the others. There is also a taste of division in society (notice how the solo has that "jumpy" feeling between joy and misery repetitively) which is a consequences of our development and realization. Some people just wanted to stand out more than the others - sometimes way too far - and it is not always a good news for everyone. I guess the statement "Power is made by power being taken" fits the story here. Pat's Roland GR Solo - MADNESS is the keyword here. How we (the modern society) are pushing things to the limit to see how far we can go - just to realize that there's no limit and we will not stop until we cannot do it anymore. And maybe - just maybe - we did not think about the consequences of our madness so well... and in the end sudden abrupt to our madness will come anytime now. AND That's when the thunder sound comes in! it really put an end in Pat's solo - which is a representation of our madness. Humanity pushing things to the limit can be beautiful sometimes, just look at all the inventions that has done some unimaginable wonders for us. We are constantly trying to achieve the impossible, and setting an even higher goals once it is achieved... and we all kind of agree that there shouldn't be any finish line for this way of thinking - and only external factors such as the "thunder" will put a stop on us. The end of the world, as we know it. And after that, we're circling back to the beginning of the song. Starting fresh, innocent, and clueless again. But we don't know yet what's gonna happen in this "2nd intro", just like we have no idea how it's going to be after we left this world... Man I've been rambling a lot. Does this make sense to you all?
I can see your point. I have many of their DVD's as well, but I have also been to numerous PMG concerts. When you're there in-person, it sounds AWESOME. For some reason, the DVD's of those same concerts don't come out as good. BTW, I'm in the DVD in the audience at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga for the Imaginary Day DVD. :)
GREAT PIANIST and GREAT IMPROVISER LYLE MAYS!!! Another Splendid vocal part !!and PAT....I'm speachless...I can't get enough TO THE END OF THE WORLD..:)
A nice song, quiet and peaceful, a Kind of apocalipsis which starts easy an then turns to complexion, for ending with hope. One of Pat's gems of late times
Yes! Love the projects that Pat has done with other players, but when you put Pat and Lyle together with ppl like Steve Rodby, Antonio Sanchez, etc magic happens. I hope that before I leave earth I can attend one more concert with the PM Group again.
Michael Guernsey ... I am all in favor of getting Mays, Rodby, Wertico, Marcel, and Blamires back with PMG. Sadly, Mark Ledford died years ago. Which reminds us that now is the time to get the old PMG lineup back together. Life is short.
I think your on to something actually! An astute observation, and one I hadn't even thought of, though I have listened to the song at least a 100 times! The beginning in rationality, then the accumulation of excitement and ecstatic frenzy, Pat carrying it far over the top, until you wonder where it can go from here and then...CRASH! Then the absolutely beautiful attempt to rebuid from the basics, beginning again with rationality and restraint. You should be a critic! Very astute!
Beautiful journey to the end of the world from no one else but Pat....who could intrepret it better other than Jesus Himself! Simply awesome and pure genius!
Lyle Mays is so talented and his style reflects George Winston's patience with every note and change. Especially @ 3;00 min mark, when, what seems like an eternity for the solo. even more apparent on non live version. Beyond excellent.
I first heard this song when my oldest daughter treated me to his concert in San Francisco. I was lulled to sleep by the beauty of the melody and his making love to his guitar. As I was just about to enter rem state, I was startled by the thunder clap. It was my first experience at a Metheny concert. On my way home, we stopped by a music store and I spent $100 on Metheny music. I'm now addicted. Lyle Mays has got to be one of the finest pianist in the world. This is one of Pat's finest.
This is definitely the most awesome metheny song. It's like... epic, man. Just BRILLIANT. The perfection of the composition is just.. Inspired. I'll never tire of this song!

I know I'm not the only one...Lyle's solos are so profound, so full of feeling, I'm often reduced to tears.
+jim brunsman i was lucky to talk with him and shake its hand in Paris, such a great man! he's the soul of pat metheny group
He is brilliant.

Yes, Lyle Mays is incredible.
Believe me, you're NOT the only one!
We all lost one of the greatest jazz pianists of this time....R.I.P. Lyle Mays
Lyle's touch on the keys is beyond magical... and musically, so brilliant... sigh...
What I love most about this performance is Lyle's piano solo! Other-worldly...
Thanks Pat Metheny and Group. Rest In Peace Lyle Mays, and thank you for your wonderful contribution to our world.

No words written or spoken can get it right.
J'ai connu Pat en 1984, je le suis depuis.
I heard Pat Methany at the Detroit Jazz Festival some years ago. Blown away. Been a fan ever since.

+Ted Hernandez Excellent
+Ted Hernandez There's NO other like Pat Matheny no where in the world!
Let him listen to 'Zero Tolerance for Silence'. That will shut him up.
Ted Hernandez ii
My main main.....I run into that shit often!
Metheny's solo towards the end is so chilling. One of the best solos I've ever seen in my life. He's so lost in it.
One of my favorite Metheny songs.
Completely amazing version of this fantastic and immersive song. Lyle's solo is incredible.

One of best musicians and compositors together with Lyle Mays in the world!
These guys were writing the "Book" of jazz improvisation during the 90's! Years from now people will listen to this music to try to understand what life was like during this period...,
I have listened to this song hundreds of times. I never tire of it! This is by far my favorite piece of music EVER!!!!
One of my top fave compositions for over 10 years. Bass line is amazing....
Not the lord. Just a promise that the depth of music will be with us forever.
Whoa!!!
I'll have what you're having.
Pat è un amante, un grande amante... dell'Amore... sa quali sono i punti deboli di chi lo ascolta.
One of the most best jazz band in the world. Thanks a lot for this wonderful music

the best in the world...i can never get enough
Genius is an understatement with Pat and company
Mon morceau préféré de Pat Metheny. Un régal. Tout est parfait.
What's NOT to like about Pat Metheny? He is the king of jazz fusion and guitar solos. Lyle Mays is probably my new favorite keys player. Even the singers are ownage. SICKKKKKKKK.

PMG's music is nothing short of life-changing.

Awesome.
Just a wonderful, wonderful piece of music.

Can't get enough of the Metheny Group, love his cut
BEEN LISTENING TO PAT FOR 30 YEARS....THAT CAT ....CAN PICK.....
A nice song, quiet and peaceful, a Kind of apocalipsis which starts easy an then turns to complexion, for ending with hope. One of Pat's gems of late times
I run to this and there are moments during this track I feel like I could fly for a few seconds.
Please come back Lyle , we all miss you ....You've been silent for too long now.

they´ve been here in portugal with this performance and this arrangement. best ever
Awesome. A spiritual experience that transcends our physical reality.
Love this song. Lyle Mays is super smooth.
Lyle Mays is so talented and his style reflects George Winston's patience with every note and change. Especially @ 3;00 min mark, when, what seems like an eternity for the solo. even more apparent on non live version. Beyond excellent.
Lyle is many many light years ahead of George Winston, though.
I first heard this song when my oldest daughter treated me to his concert in San Francisco. I was lulled to sleep by the beauty of the melody and his making love to his guitar.
