If going from a short shaft to a long shaft you would also need the longer housing and the extra bolts to hold it on in addition to the longer three parts you mention(drive shaft, shift shaft and water tube). Love the videos Mike

@3:02 - the WHY. Thank you for clearly explaining the cavitation plate. Now to lift the transom mount to make a long shaft work :)

T-Mike, I enjoy and appreciate everything about you, your work, your spirit, and your love of these vintage Johnson and Evinrude treasures. This video, however, has me a bit confused. You measured the short shaft Johnson 9.5 from the transom bracket to to the "bottom of the gear case," but you measured the long shaft from the same spot on the transom bracket to the "cavitation plate" and not the "bottom of the gear case." It looks to me like the short shaft has an additional 5 inches or so from the bottom of the gear case to the cavitation plate making the measurement of the same reference points very similar (20 inches). Am I missing something? What is the measurement of the short shaft from the transom bracket to the cavitation plate? Thank you for your channel.

Interesting, I did not know you could convert these motors from one to the other.

Mike. My original Evinrude the came with my boat is a 1966 5 HP Long Shaft. It was installed on a 1985 Catalina 22 Sailboat. I have taken good care of it with all OEM parts. I would like to repaint the dark blue original color of the motor and drive system (I already did the hood and found quality copies of the OEM stickers for the hood). What color is available over the counter that closely matches the original dark blue of my motor? Thank you. I saw the restorations on your Store's listings and they were beautiful!

@@michaeljsimon I figured it's quite easy if you have spark on one cylinder:
1: Swap the coils to see if the other coil gives you spark.
      2. If yes, it has to be the CDI since the trigger and stator must be fine because you have spark.
      3. If no: A bad coil is the problem.
      4. if there is no spark on both cylinders it could be anything.

I'm confused why do you say measure from the bracket to bottom of gear case is short shaft .then you say measure from bracket to cavation plate for long shaft.

      Depends on the application.
Many short shaft motors, especially OMC, are also 17". You're right in the middle of the "either zone". Standardization of measurements was a long road.
Best to measure your motor before committing to the purchase.

Not the best two motors to use for illustration.
While your definitions are correct, the 9.5 showed as a long shaft. Your first measurement gave you 15" to the gear case, not the cav plate - and when defining it to the cav plate, it is considerably lower than the keel.
The Yachtwin does appear to be 20", but that model was sold as an XL. It's a sailboat motor.
It might be worth revisiting this vid as the comments reflect the confusion.
