Was wanting a 40hp Johnson and seen a long shaft for sale and thought what is the process to to change to short shaft. Nope 😂 Thanks for all the information I think I’ll wait for the right one to come along. That looks like a huge headache!
too funny ,,my neigbors hear lots of F bombs as well ,,had all bolts snap off lower end try to change water pump on 1976 evinrude 25 hp,,and then all the waterpump screws as well,,I think this motor is telling me something
Very informative video. I'm collecting the nos parts to change a 65hp mercury to a short shaft - hope I don't have just a box full of parts, when I'm finished :-/
Would have got a Gas torch on that bolt Brandon. had the same problem on my Evinrude 50 and worked nicely. I use a plumbers gas torch.Great engine vids though as always.
Appearance good enough to tolerate it, ugly enough that no one will want to attempt to steal it. Given the same expressed concerns, the lower crankcase seal cover bolts for the powerhead I am assembling will get a light even coat of Aviation Form a gasket except for a short bit at the end of the bolts. The powerhead base mounting bolts will likely get the same treatment as well when I can get to it. At least your project is moving, mine is stuck waiting on parts. Nothing ruins the flow of a powerhead assembly job than one connecting rod cap out of four rods insists on not aligning by hand no matter what you do. I didn't have a engine machinist supervision, so the recommended targeted measured tapping on the rod cap to re-align it went bad and the rod cap cracked at the seam after several attempts to get it to align. Thankfully getting a used one in good condition that isn't expensive is fairly easy to order/get.
I wish they had parts for my 2 strokes 35hp Johnson (1999ish) I’m looking to extend it It seems they only had extension kits for 45HP and up my housing being solid I don’t believe I can pull it off easy
have another question . on your video at 13:58 mark where you had to drill out the exhaust housing lower bushing. im doing a similar swap long to short on my 35hp i got lucky and mine came out with deep creep and some vice grips on my exhaust housing ! the lower unit im swapping to has 1 stuck on it which thankfully i do not have to remove now since i was able to get that one out the exhaust housing. what do you suggest i coat the top of bushing with when reinstalling the lower unit so it does not corrode it self inplace like the other one did? . marine grease? or what. also another side question when i took off the water pump of my 1991 lower unit had what looked like blue loctite on the bolts and then my 1985 lower unit did not have that on the bolt threads which they use the same water pump kits actually most all parts are the same . should i hit them with some or no and whats the tq spec on those ?
I gotta make my 1966 33hp Evinrude skitwin into a shortshaft, using a 1959 35hp Johnson. Hopefully, everything goes right and I can just swap the entire gearcase and just have to change the upper water tube. We shall see. I don’t even know if the gearcase is good on the ‘59 yet...
I’ve got an 1977 Johnson 35 Remote electric start that I want to convert to tiller. I’ve got a 1978 Johnson 25 tiller that I want to take the tiller off of it for the 35. Would it be easier for me to just switch the carbs or just switch the steering brackets? Also what parts are needed for a 1977 Johnson 35 short shaft to long shaft conversion?
Hi i have a 30 hp Johnson and im wondering if i hzve a short or long Shaft but i don't know the measurements. Could you tell me the measurements please and from where to mesure that would be greatly appreciated thanks
I'm currently doing the same thing I am having trouble finding a shift rod would you know where to buy one that's all I need or could I just cut and re drill the factory one to work
nice video, I hate it when that happens, breaking bolts, the worse part is I make a mass drilling. them out, just a question -are you restoring this outboard? are you going to paint it as well?
I tore into my 84 25hp Johnson and I found the drive shaft welded and it's not a decent weld either it's like a blob that's been half ass smoothed is it safe to run or do I have to search the interweb for one?
Yeah I don't know. If its been working, might work? Until it breaks, that'll suck. Naturally it'll happen on the open water, at speed. Leaving you stranded. My bigger concern would be when it breaks and the powerhead takes off full speed without a load, possibly blowing itself up. or, the half spinning shaft just destroying everything as it comes out at 5500 rpm I think I would just buy a used one from ebay.
@@BrandonsGarage this happened to mine today. Luckily, the motor was fine. That’s why I’m on your video. The extension tube broke apart (didn’t hit anything) and the motor went into reverse at 24mph with three guys coming from a duck hunt. I’m trying to figure how hard it will be for me to just convert it into short shaft, praying nothing in the gearbox is trashed. I had no forward hearing after this.
I really don’t see why people leave comments on here because of the way you do something. You know an have more talent in your little finger nail that bout 85% of your arm chair boat mechanics. So you should just laugh their comments off. Lol

I wish I could stay so calm when I break off a bolt. My cursing scares the neighbors. Great video!
Oh I knew it was coming, those darn studs are always stuck.

Nice instruction. I wonder which way to mount the plastic keeper on the shift rod? Thanks in advance🙂
Gives me the chills get a torch
I kinda like the trashy look. Less likely to be stolen.

Lol was thinking about doing this. So glad I watched this video!! No chance I am doing it!
yeah, its a lot of work

Where did you buy the short conversation parts
I am about to perform this process converting an 88 short shaft to long shaft. How long did this entire process take you?

If i have a 97johnson 25hp long shaft. Would i be aboe to swap my powerhead onto a 90 short shaft motor
💯💯💯
Can a newer yamaha 9.9 25” shaft be converted to a short shaft?
What’s the size of that water tube washer?
You think its still possible to get short shaft parts???
nice video, I hate it when that happens, breaking bolts, the worse part is I make a mass drilling. them out, just a question -are you restoring this outboard? are you going to paint it as well?
Do you still have the parts that you took off? I have a short shaft I'm trying to convert to long. I'll buy them from you
I’ll trade you my long shaft if your close to Milwaukee lol. I’m looking for short
Where do you get the used parts from? Or do you scrap old motors and salvage the parts?
What are you doing with the extension kit . My 35hp is short from the keel ?
Hello. I need Johnson 40 adjustment from Russia in 2000. Ignition adjustment. Scheme how to adjust the ignition. Help.
I’m having no luck finding a water tube. Do you have a link to the one you ordered? Thanks!!

How do you clean your hardware? Wire wheel?
Can I do this with a newer engine? I have a 2007 15hp Johnson
What would be the chances that the parts to convert to long shaft would be for sale?
Tell me how to adjust the ignition Johnson 40 2000?
I want to pay you for the manual.
The manual?
@@BrandonsGarage, the book repair instructions. Sorry for my English
What’s the part number on that special wrench to take the power head off ?
