You earned my sub! Im resealing the lower unit on my 84 25hp Evinrude. Love this motor honestly. It has tons of power. Checked my gear oil and it was full of water. Pressure test revealed bad seals . But the impeller wasn't cooling correctly so it needed to be pulled anyways.
Dennis from Duluth. I have a 67 Johnson 20hp that needs some love in the gear case. I have been a little nervous about attacking the dragons colon but after watching the video I think I will give it a try. Thank you T-Mike for another great video. If I get in trouble I know who to call.
Hello T-Mike, I'm working on restoring a 1966 Johnson 20hp outboard motor and I'm struggling to get a stubborn bolt from the head of the motor. I wanted to do a thorough cleaning of the water passages, and make sure this motor doesn't overheat. Great videos and thanks for your help.
Great instructions. Much appreciated.Thank you. Would you consider doing a video on fuel tank and component testing and repair (o ring replacement in connectors etc). How does 2 line pressure system work?
T-Mike. I am having issues after I replaced water pump and tried to install the lower back on the motor I can shift forward. It shifts normal when sitting on table but the moment I connect the shift rod it messes up. I can tighten the lower up until there is a 3/16 of a gap before completely tight and it shifts, but I can’t tighten on the way
I have an old 90 horse Johnson last night before going fishing today. I started it and put it in forward and reversed, and it worked great. Out on the lake today it wouldn't go in forward but would go in reverse, what happened and how do I fix it, or do you have a video
Not sure but OMC used the rope seal up thru the 70`s , shouldn`t be hard to google it and find the OMC # for the sealer then find a modern equivalent sealer. Thats how some of guys been doing on the later models.
J’aime bien vos vidéos et surtout ces quelques mots en français..! Dites-moi quel est le code pour la couleur, moi j’ai un 1972 evinrude et il me semble que c’est le même bleu que celui qui est présenté sur votre vidéo..! Merci d’avance
Another great video Mike. Did you apply sealer at the prop shaft bushing where the spaghetti seal ends? What sealer did you use? It looked like the old Indian head sealer or permatex tar like stuff.
You should make a video on reinstalling the lower unit I can’t get mine back into the motor the driveshaft won’t go in no issues with the gear shifter rod I’ve tried everything I can think of but no luck
Hi Mike, my td-20 has two grease seals or some folks call them gear oil seals. One is on the prop shaft plate that holds the gears in. The other one is for the drive shaft and is down 3" in the hole of the gear case. I looked into how to get it removed and the seal removal tool is not around anymore? Have you changed out this grease seal before and if so what did you use to remove it? Thanks
Hey Mike I’m working on a 1959 golden jubilee 10 hp mod # 10018 do you happen to have a shift shaft seal part number or know where to get one thanks in advance rich
@@michaeljsimon thanks, for that clarification. Ive got it all back together and i noticed that the shift rod is very hard to move but it does operate correctly. Did it not get enough lube on the new o-ring or is there possibly another problem?
For anyone watching, the trick with the tap and bolt won't work on 40hp engines. The housing is too tall to get a tap in there. There is a special tool you can buy to remove the bushing, but I just used a long punch and worked around the edges. I replaced the bushing. I'm going to use Permatex #3 aviation non hardening sealant. Also, 40hp engines have an O ring and a gasket under the bushing.
T-Mike ❤ maybe the best service video I have ever seen. No leaking gearcases from this moment on.
I am a retired omc mechanic there is a punch to drive out the bushing from the bottom easy to make
I have used the blunt end of a 7mm drill bit to drive it out. It works really well. The shift rod is 1/4", or 6.5mm.

Thank you for all video. It’s very helpful Louie from California.
Man, I wished I watched this first. Thanks for the video
Thx T-Mike this video will get used by many I’m sure.
Hi I got a 25hp Jonson I have run it yet ,thank you for this video and teaching me ,you have a new student
Always very helpful

I also have a leaking fuel fitting off the tank feed line.
Great job T-Mike I wonder how many OMC mechanics are left that know those tricks for making those repairs
Not many.
Great video, thanks T-Mike! 👍🏻
Great video, will be doing a couple gear cases I have and send them! Hahaha Thanks T-Mike!!
What holds the drive shaft in the lower unit? Mine pulled out and is stuck in the motor 😮
T-Mike, what do you use the 4 screws on your lower unit fixture board for? Thanks for all your great instructional videos.

Bad clutch dog. Find my video. Good luck.
5/16 TAP DONT FIT IN THE BASS BUSHING ON MY 76 6HP JOHNSON WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT USEING SELF TAPPING BOLT
What was the sealer you used on the rope type seal?

I used permetex aircraft non hardening sealant. Lots of guys say not to use rtv but many guys have and not had an issue

No sealant
How do you change out the drive shaft seal also?
I have oil coming out of the spot where it sucks the water in what is the likely cause for that

Your bushing won't be as tight or as much meat on it since you tapped it. I replaced mine and threw the old tapped one out
You should make a video on reinstalling the lower unit
I can’t get mine back into the motor the driveshaft won’t go in no issues with the gear shifter rod
I’ve tried everything I can think of but no luck
Your best bet is to remove powerhead then install Gearcase then put powerhead back on.
Thanks I was leaning towards doing that. I really appreciate your advice and your videos has taught me tons

Which direction on the shift seal bushing should the beveled edge be facing ?
Downward

Where can I purchase an air pump tester like yours T Mike?
Amazon
If you tap the top are still able to reuse that bushing?
Yes

@@andrewasbill3690 new o-ring is working. All good
Will any thread 5/16 tap work?
@@outforbloodbowfishing5821 yes
I made a puller for mine out of an old lawnmower blade and after I tapped it I pulled it out with a bolt.
What size/year is the lower unit you are working on in the video?
Not sure
Blind bearing puller/slide hammer sets are $25 on Ebay.
That means there are more choices on Amazon usually.
Will this be the same for 1968 6hp Evinrude motor ?
Yes
Seriously? You put the ruined bushing back?
