    I'll always thought that Zoro wanted to defeat his childhood friend Kuina, the one who he couldn't beat at the time. Quina had the same goal as Zoro to becoming the best and by the time she starts fighting Zoro, she already know that she will never be the best, being a woman and all. Really sad and shows why she is calmly accepting her fate and becoming better that everyone at the sword until her age catches up. It is near that time, when we see the breakdown Quinna had and only then Zoro decides to make a deal with her to keep her going. After all, she is his sparring partner and the only one able to keep up with him and earn his respect, which is a core thing to samurai’s lifestyle.

       @Killer Sloth I desagree, before meeting kuina he wanted only a worth oponent, cause he beat the shit out all the kids in his village, so he was a typical delinquent kid who meet a strong oponent and now he want defeat him, because losing for Zoro hurts much more the ego than any sword cut will ever hurt.

  • @madpanger7257

    Sometimes its a simple answer
    He had a dream of becoming the worlds strongest when he was training in the dojo.
    After Kuina died it manifested into an ambition.
    Could be wrong but makes sense. It was more of a dream before Kuina died. Now its a promise.

    • @umcaraqualquer1050
      @umcaraqualquer1050 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree, in One Piece, Legacy of Dreams is what drives all the main characters. All Blue, King of Pirates, Best Swordsman, Know all poneglyph etc... All this ambition had already been someone else's, Zeff, Gol D. Roger, Kuina, citizens of Ohara.
      Even Black Beard once said "People's dreams have no end"

    • @Roojercurryninja
      @Roojercurryninja 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      nah man, it was already an ambition for him, he was already shown to be training an insane ammount, had kuina not died then zoro eventually would have gotten stronger than her and did the same thing of trying to find mihawk
      the promise and death of kuina affected him but it didn't manifest his ambition, all it did was give him the extra push of well it's gotta be me now

    I've always felt that Zoro is someone who was always motivated by testing his own human limitations rather than some greater purpose. Like Luffy he isn't tied down to some greater cause, like freeing Wano. While his desire for strength precedes Kuina's death, I think her dying was a stark reminder to young Zoro of his own limits and mortality. Kuina's death was about the shocking fragility of human life. As an adult he fights as if he is daring death to take him, danger excites him and pushing himself to the limit also excites him. He is starkly aware of the limits of human ability and thrives off of defying them.

      I disagree. Its unfair to compare it to luffy and saying luffy doesnt have a greater cause when oda literally has explicitly stated that luffy has a true goal that becoming pirate king is the means to the end. I think the idea that this whole time zoro's entire life has been about his mission and absolute determination to take back his stolen country from halfway across the world is fucking epic. imo zoro isnt necessarily motivated by testing his limits, rather he knows it must constantly be done in order to become strong enough to be the absolute strongest and take back wano.

    When you started diving into your insecurities to understand why you loved Zoro, it made me thing why I love Brook so much. So, I took a step back and really thought about my insecurities and I came to realize, I’m always scared of being alone. Wither it be losing friends or loved ones, the lingering fear of “I might be truly alone” always keeps me up at night. Then there’s Brook, a man trapped at sea for 50 years in a boat he couldn’t sail. After losing his crew, Laboon and his captain, he somehow kept the courage to keep going. I know deep down that if I was in Brooks situation I wouldn’t have stayed around for that long. So seeing him still alive today with new friends and people he cares about gives me courage to keep moving forward.

      I feel u bro. Behind brook’s childishness and child like optimism and wonder, is a person with a very dark and haunting past yet he carried on with courage and hope. There’s so much to learn from each character! I love brook so much, and i can relate to him on a deeper level because of my fears of being alone; the fear of loneliness. I agree with you wholeheartedly about how I wouldn’t be around that long if I were in Brook’s shoes. But watching Brook’s story unfold, I can just feel his fighting spirit and he’s so admirable but most importantly, just like Brook I too can carry on with courage and hope 🥲

      I never felt zoro wants to fulfill his dream of becoming strongest swordsman to open wano borders
      Its always felt like a challenge to him like to prove someone that he is the strongest
      If he wanted to defeat kaido and orochi then why is he so fixated on mihawk now some will argue that he is the strongest and defeating him will make zoro the strongest so he can take down kaido then why not go for kaido straight its not like that zoro never tried to defeat someone who is stronger than him
      Also wano will open before zoro becomes the strongest therefore there will be no reason for him to fight to become the strongest
      I think its simply becoz he made a promise to quina that he will beat her someday so for him quina was the strongest and as she died he wants to defeat mihawk so that he can finally win against quina

    Ok I’m gonna go against the grain here with the rest of the comments and say I disagree with this theory / analysis of Zoro’s character for the sole reason that you failed to address one crucial aspect of Zoro’s character arc.
    So your reasoning here pretty much says: Zoro wants to become the strongest swordsman -> he wants to become strong -> he wants to be strong enough to protect / save something -> he wants to be strong enough to save Wano. As you explained the entire crux of Zoro’s motivation to be the strongest is this hidden knowledge and desire to save Wano. While I agree that Zoro might know more than he lets on, if we frame his dream to have that hidden purpose, what would that mean for Zoro’s motivation for fighting Mihawk AFTER Wano? Yeah sure after Wano Zoro might not be the strongest just yet but he would’ve proven himself to be one of the strongest. The problem is, if the entire true purpose of his goal has already been fulfilled after Wano, the only reason there would be for Zoro to fight Mihawk and gain that title is “he just wants to”. Which cycles back to what we already assume as readers his goal to be.
    Now you drew some parallels with Zoro’s dream and Luffy’s that both of their dreams essentially sound like just the means to a secret end. If your theory is true though there would be no parallel at all. Luffy’s secret goal (which is the same as Roger’s) sounds like he needs to be PK first. While with Zoro’s isn’t (if his ultimate goal is to free Wano). Heck he doesn’t even NEED to be the strongest to fulfill that goal.
    Now sure, there might still be some hidden part of Zoro’s past that would reveal a hidden motivation for why he wants to be strongest, but unless that can carry his motivations AFTER Wano and towards his fight with Mihawk I wouldn’t be convinced.

      @@jamelmacon1130 He did bring up Kuina, but he didn't spend much time on it. And I also agree the theory is shaky and imo not true for the reasons the guy above explained. But I do also think that Zoro probably does know more about Wano and his connection to it than Oda sensei has shown us so far. I think just like we got Sanji's backstory on WCI, we will get the same level of mind blowing backstory that makes Zoro's character ten times better as well very soon in Wano. My guess is that he did know about the destruction of Wano by Kaido and did expect to end up there at some point, but wants to be the strongest swordsman because he knows his father left Wano for being too weak to defeat Kaido. Because of this he wants to be strong enough to defeat someone like Kaido in order to restore honor to his family and never let anyone he cares about get hurt like the people of Wano have been hurt. He doesn't seem like he cares as much, partly because he doesn't know any of the people of Wano personally, but also because he feels shame that his father abandoned the country and doesn't want anyone to believe he is the same way as him. To prove this we see how seriously he takes Orochi and other Wano scum hurting good citizens like Tama/Yasui/Hiyori by blowing his cover in passionate vengeance. But he never treats them like his own family because if he did treat them like family he would have to face the shame of what his father did. The main part I think will be purely up to GOda to create is why exactly his father left, who he was too weak to defeat on battle besides Kaido obviously, how Zoro learned about it all and what experience Zoro has had with his father that made him become the serious person that he is.

    • @rouelandrewpulma9799
      @rouelandrewpulma9799 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Gravy Father how about this then. If the entire core of Zoro’s reason to be the strongest swordsman in the world revolves around freeing Wano, what would be left of Zoro’s motivation of beating Mihawk AFTER the Wano arc? This is something extremely crucial to Zoro’s character establishment and setup that Ohara failed to address. What Ohara is essentially saying here is that WSS is just a means to an end, the end being a free Wano. If Wano is already free why else does he need to gain the title if he can already get that end without being WSS? Would he still want that title and beat Mihawk “just because”?. If so, isn’t that EXACTLY what we as readers already assume his goals to be?!?!
      Sure Wano might reveal a bit more into Zoro’s past and origins and Zoro might even know more than he lets on, but unless those things move Zoro’s goal past Wano and towards Mihawk then it’s a baseless theory.

  • @Poet482

    What's so great about Zoro how he could very much be the lead of a more typical shonen, but instead has his journey weaved into Luffy's and elevates both characters as a result. It allows his fights and character moments to have more poignantcy since we see him mulling over things in the background in addition to doing his training. He allows his actions to speak louder than his words, which also makes it so that when he *does* have something to say, it carries the weight it needs... in contrast to a certain curly-browed idiot.
    Zoro is the man, in other words.

    I absolutely love this theory, but I see one glaring issue with it: once Kaido and Orochi are defeated and Wano is freed, what would be Zoro's motivation for the rest of the story? If he is striving to become the strongest for the sake of completing this arc's storyline, what will make him want to continue on to the next? He also wouldn't have beaten Mihawk so he wouldn't have achieved his dream, so either he will essentially give up on his dream or he needs another motivation after Wano. But what would his new motivation be?

    The ironies that make One Piece great.
    - Zoro always seem to get lost with physical directions , but knows perfectly well the direction of his goal.
    -Sanji wants to see the all blue, but doesn’t realize he is crossing all of the blue through the journey.
    -Chopper wants to be a great doctor , but he already is.
    - Luffy stated that the Pirate King is the freest man of the seas, but he is the most calm free pirate in the seas.
    Many others will realize they’re living their dreams or have changed them out of love for their friends. The true meaning of friendship is sacrifice. This is why they continue to grow stronger , because they fight and lose for each other.

    As much as I love your videos, and the enthusiasm, Zoro wants to be the greatest swordsman in the world because Zoro loves the art of swordsmanship. The idea that Zoro someone has kept his true reasons hidden from the crew WOULD align with the fact that some people are astonished that he would have a captain because of how much dominating energy he emits, but it does not align with the pledge to Luffy that he made in East Blue. Usain Bolt, Michael Jordan, and countless other greats, didn’t want to be the greatest for any other reason other than that they just loved what they do. I also think every character is a reflection of Oda in someway, and Zoro reflects Odas love for a craft, and his desire to be considered one of the best at it.

I like Zoro because of his altruistic, gentle nature... that is something I strive for. Put it this way: He wants to become the strongest swordsman, it's his dream or death for him...but even his dream, his life, he would give up for Luffy, as he almost did countless times. And if he has had this desire all the time, to just free Wano, he would be using Luffy, something that I don't see, never, someone like Zoro doing, someone that is so proud that refused to turn his back on death when Mihawk went to strike him. Someone that is so proud that the only time we see him crying in the series is when he lost, and at the same time because he didn't want to lose again because of his captain too. I don't think that Zoro wants to be the strongest because he wants to free Wano.
