Zoro's Greatest Moment: From a Knight to a King

  • One Piece episode 1062 showcased what I've been most excited to talk about for a while in regards to Zoro. There's quite a bit more to his path of progression as a swordsman than mere power levels. I hope this video helps illuminate some of you to that. To me, Onigashima marks the pinnacle of Zoro's character development, and it's mostly due to things hidden behind some great nuance!

A king who lowers himself to knighthood in order to serve a man he perceives as being his better. And when met with another just like him, he finally recalls his Kingly ambition and selfish desire, becoming all the more powerful for it.

This was probably the best analysis of Zoro in the Post Time Skip era. While I will always maintain that there should have been more for him in Wano, what we received was satisfactory and completely congruent with his narrative. It’s a shame that people stereotype him into a bland, “cool guy” character when there’s so much more to him. Wano forced the SHs to balance their true selves with their learned experiences. Zoro is competitive in nature. He desired greatness from birth and sealed his conviction with a promise. This guided his journey, but through his bonds he learned that his family holds just as much, if not more value. Placing Luffy’s dream above his own was the culmination of his growth, but as you said, his decision had ripple affects due to him acting in extremes. Going from one to another put his conviction and ability to protect his family at risk. Forcing him to rekindle his conviction and understand that without it, Luffy cannot become the PK was the epiphany required for him to reach a state of balance. After all, without balance, what good is a swordsman? It’s fitting that in an arc centred around balance, Zoro somehow managed to navigate through Enma’s trials to find his own. With his wings soaring, all Luffy must do is prove that he too can stand above others and become a king amongst kings. Great video, 10/10.

I disagree that we should have gotten more, I think that Whole Cake spoiled people and gave them the wrong impression.
Zoro got much more attention pre ts than Sanji so Oda made up for it (it was always planned that way).
Zoro got everything we ever wanted and more out of Wano. Multiple epic fights and moments to rival any other in the series, a new sword and a fucking flashback!
Pre Whole Cake nobody even imagined there will be more backstory to any strawhats, but when Sanji got more people became greedy. Zoro was always this mysetrious cool guy that becomes complex once you read more into him, but it is never spelled out for us... thats why its presented in a minimalist/myhtological/questioning way

Feel like the majority of the people who stereotype him into the bland “cool guy” character, just say what they hear others say. It doesn’t help that most Zoro fans only talk about how badass and strong he is 😂. His writing underrated to me.

Half of his bloodline is from Wano and the most legendary figure of the country happens to be one of his ancestors 😂. I personally was satisfied with what we got of Zoro in Wano but I can at least understand where people are coming from.

Zoro vs King showed one of their most important differences, especially through the way they think in the battle.
King constantly focuses on him being genetically superior, and how “Because I’m here, you cannot surpass Kaido”. The man may be called King, but he truly believes Kaido is the one he needs to serve. It’s unknown if King really has any personal goals, since he’s more then happy to serve Kaido.
Zoro’s battle is more “How do I damage King” and “How do I control Enma.” His goal of winning for his captain has taken a backstage, to his goal of winning against King, to be the strongest swordsman. At the end of it all, he agrees to merge his two goals, deciding “I will be the worlds greatest swordsman, and I will help Luffy become the pirate king.” That’s the true nature of becoming a “King”, but not just any King, a “King of Hell”.
King doesn’t care about himself all that much, and just wants to win for Kaido’s sake. Zoro cares about Luffy, but also has a personal goal to win for, which is why he can win. It’s telling to, that Zoro claims he’ll be the king of hell, while King just says “Kaido”.

watching your videos and hearing you speak is very unreal to me. It is like someone is literally taking my thoughts and putting them into words .
I just want to add a bit of extra cool detail to your analysis .
1- one of the important aspect about enma as a sword that it is made by the same person that made zoro original 2 swords that we saw him us in the east blue saga and i think that is important because for me zoro original 2 swords represent his pride and in his fight with mihawk he lost that pride and that was represented in his 2 swords getting broken and you can see how that ties in with emma being the sword that allowed zoro to regain his ambition and how enma is in a sense his new pride a pride that is build not on ignorant but on his growth.
2- one of the central and important detail of the fight is how both zoro and king were trying to strip each other from what they hold dear to them zoro with his swords representing his dream and king with his mask representing the name that was giving to him by his captain kaido and you can see how king after zoro was able to regain his ambition when king tried to take his swords from him again king was overpowered by zoro .
3- zoro title being the king of hell fits perfectly with him being a part of the shimotsuki clan and that because they were the rulers of ringo a place called the Eternal Grave and it fits really well with how zoro contrasts king .
Albert, being someone that is running from himself and his race and finding refuge in his title “king” and gives up his original name that represents his trauma and pain as a child and zoro return to his origin .

Due to your video, I just realised the quote has another meaning!
"My promise to my captain and best friend!"
I initially thought he just meant Luffy. But now I realise he means Luffy(Captain) and Kuina(Best friend). This new interpretation makes sense considering we got a Kuina flashback in the King fight just before that quote. And it's less cringy than what I thought he initially meant.

I don't mean to bring "that guy" up, but if you dismiss that guy as the crew's knight because Zoro defends Luffy against Kuma, how would you consider the times that guy saved the crew on dozens of occasions? Knights are defenders.
What I'm trying to say is, Zoro is Luffy's Knight, whereas that guy is the crew's knight.
