One-way bikepacking trip - Moss Vale to Kiama

- I've got a mate Nik, whose parents live in Kiama. Nik planned a bikepacking trip from Moss Vale back to his parents' house. Chris and I decided it looked fun. They parked at Kiama on Friday morning and got a lift up to Moss Vale. I had to work on Friday so I looked into getting the train to Moss Vale. I found that it's a long trip from Sydney Central, And, you have to change trains onto the Southern Highlands line in Campbeltown. This train only has 2 carriages and only allows 2 bikes, if they will fit. It was also going to be peak hour, so after trying to score a lift, I decided to drive.
It was a fun few days, a mix of urban and remote. lots of places to buy food, probably too much road for the videos I like making but still a load of fun.
I tried a knew camera cage for my action camera and it was way too heavy causing a lot of camera bounce on the chest shots. Not using that again. see if you can spot the shots.

Cheers mate, nothing beats the sound of birds chirping in the morning. I've got a video idea that involves bikes, birds, and a new camera lens I got. I'm hoping to get out very soon to see what I can come up with. I'd hate for you to have nothing to watch with those tinnys 😜

This one is probably my favourite vid. I rode Kiama to Kangeroo Valley with a mate back in the late 90's. Your vid brought back memories and stoked a lot of emotions. Thanks mate.
This is awesome to hear mate. I'm constantly thinking I need to go find the most outrageous places to ride for people to like watching the videos. Glad this stoked your emotions. I was worried that all the road riding and towns was going to be boring and not adventurous enough. I don't know why I thought that, it was a fun adventure. Cheers for the reminder.

I did a trip in the 90's from MossVale to Kangaroo Valley for a permaculture exhibition, campes in the showground, then off via Wottomolla Road (Woodhill). It was very pleasant until it got to a place we had camped in the 70's and then it just heads for the sky. Steepest mountain I think I have ever pushed up, the ride down into Berry was a gentle glide just controlling the speed a bit with brakes. My Dad told stories of crossing that road with Uncle Charlie in a milk truck that was so old it had solid tyres, and having to do a 7 point turn to get around the hairpin half way up with the back of the truck over the edge. Liked your keen run down into the valley at night, Barrengarry Mt was a good ride with 8 hairpins too but those trails look good.
Good to see home being enjoyed by others. I live near Fitzroy Falls and enjoy the gravel roads all around the area.

Beautiful spot you live in mate. I'm pretty keen to head back soon and do the loop from Kangaroo Valley up to Fitzroy falls, check them out and then go see Meryla pass in the daytime. I also want to go checkout that wombat lookout that I didn't have time to see. Thanks for watching.

Thanks Paul. While it was steep it was just so pretty. The lush scenery kind of kept my mind off the hill. It was also in the shade most of the climb which made a huge difference. If it was in the hot sun it would have been brutal.

That was very nice of Tom. The trains restricting 2 bikes is crazy. As for the Berry Mountain detour, you might as well gone via Cambewarra and stopped at the Cambewarra Tea Room for a scenic picture... next time perhaps!
Tom went so far out of his way which was amazing. I felt guilty but he was happy. Over the easter long weekend I ended up giving him some handlebars as a thank you. Then he gave me beer as a thank you for the handlebars. The guy is just too nice 😂 I still feel like I owe him something.
I just googled the Cambewarra tea room. I think you're right. We had heaps of time for a detour. Saying that, we may have had to setup in that downpour if we got to camp any later. Camping at the tearoom with the view would be cool 😂

Thanks, really enjoyed seeing my local area, the Seven Mile Beach section is a favourite, you can also take that trail south from the Beach Rd car park, when you hit the end at Sand Track follow that out about 300metres towards Gerroa Rd, on the left there’s an unmarked trail that’s rideable, it leads through the southern section of Seven Mile Beach NP all the way to Shoalhaven Heads it’s not maintained by NPs but a fun ride, long pants recommended.
You live in such a beautiful area. Those trails along Seven Mile beach were stunning and such a nice pedal. Nik (the one with the posty flap on his helmet) planned this ride. He has ridden all the way to Shoalhaven heads before and said there was a tonne of spider webs across the trail. Your comment has explained why. I'm still keen to ride it someday though. I wonder how many other secret little trails there are on the coast. It would be cool to do a ride from Sydney all the way down the south coast avoiding roads as much as possible. You've got me thinking now.

I've bikepacked from the falls down to Griffins Farm before too Tim. How good are those views at the top! I think I took a photo with my bike leaning against the exact same tree you did. Another great video mate.
I also had to lift my loaded bike over that annoying gate! It's not listed as locked on any of the websites.
I really wanted to ride out to Wombat hill lookout at the top of the pass, Way too late by the time I got there. It means I'll have to go back. next time I'll leave amply time. I'll probably try the loop up that Mcphails fire trail. As for the gate. It was pretty funny because the boys messaged me from their Zoleo and said goodluck with the gate. When I arrived at the first one I laughed and went straight under it. Then I arrived at the second. I laughed again as the message made sense. What a stich up. No idea why they need 2 gates.

I don't get that one either. I understand that a road bike might not be able to get through the landslide works, and then becomes a "pedestrian". If a car can get through then an MTB or gravel bike can get through. I can't imagine that a landslide would be that long that MTBs would be that much of a hold up, time wise.
Just checked the RMS Live Traffic website - mixed messages there - one landslide saying bicycles permitted, another landslide further along saying escorted pedestrian access only.
haha, don't worry, we were very close to just giving her the bird and riding through. We were worried we would ride for ages and then come across some angry men in excavators and have to ride all the way back. we decided to just do the right thing. In the end I actually really liked riding up over Berry Mountain. It was very scenic.
@@sirbarryvee-eight6485 While I was editing this, I went on google street view and found 2 landslide sections. I nearly added them to my video. They looked perfectly fine to ride on any bike, one longer than the other but it got me thinking. Maybe it's a popular cycling route and endless bikes cause the workers to have to stop too often and get nothing done. Thats the only reason I could come up with. I thought maybe they just closed it to all cyclists while they get the work done. Saying this, it looks like it's been in the construction state for months. Not sure what they're doing. Maybe rocks are continually falling, and they don't want a cyclist hit. Who knows really. I do know Meryla pass is a lot more hectic to ride 😆
Woodhill mt road being closed was a blessing for you. I would ride up berry mtn in preference to Woodhill anyday
Good to know. Out of curiosity why do you say this? Nik made the plans by looking at google street view. Looked alright on there. Saying that I didn’t mind the ride up and over Berry Mountain. It was quite beautiful. Heaps less cars than we expected. We did have plans to hike up to drawing room rocks but the alternative route meant that didn’t happen.

Overall I was pretty chuffed with the setup. I just took too much random crap with me. I need a smaller front rack too. Mine is heavy and overkill. Basket life is good though!
Sweet trip. That's some nonsense no bikes through a landslide it's usually the other way around in every other case. Put the bike on your shoulder and just walk it they didn't say no pedestrians! 😂
No bikes may be due to single lane traffic at the land slip with stop go in operation. Bikes travel at a different speed to cars and they wouldn't be able to let the the cars at the other end come through untill you made it . That would cause lots of cranky drivers waiting on yhe other aproach . I dont think they banned bikes just to mess with bike riders , its probably a health and safety restriction thing .
@@jugglematt100 That makes sense but it's also easily remedied, they can have the bikes wait for a while then let them have the lane a few times a day. They can also shuttle the bikes.
Anytime there is roadwork it’s down to a 10k limit anyway so there’s that .

Cheers mate, This ride was planned by my Friend Nik. Tall guy in the vid. He followed some of the Attack of the buns route and then just scoped out google maps and google street view to get us over to Berry. He already knew of the trails over near the coast. Other rides I've been searching areas on Ride with GPS for routes others have created. This seems ok. A week ago I did a fun ride over to Wollombi from Morisette which was pretty fun. I'll put something together on that soon. Finding good loops is tough. I think thats why I've gone back to the Snowys so often as I love all the trails out there and so many cars can't travel on. I also love not seeing a town for days.
The Omafiets bike shop website has a few routes on it I'd like to do and film. Just finding the time is the hard part. This one was similar to one they have. www.omafiets.com.au/blogs/routes-around-sydney/

Hi love your adventures I was just wondering why do you not sleep in the huts in bad weather here in ireland you can sleep in the bothies and the same in Scotland keep up your adventures
The huts up in the high country are used for emergency shelter. The idea is they a free to use but take a tent and sleep outside. I've heard stories of large groups heading out and a full day expedition with the plan on sleeping in a hut, only to arrive and the hut is already full with others doing the same thing. This can be quite dangerous if the weather turns bad and there isn't enough space for everyone. It's just easier if everyone is self-sufficient. Saying this, I've slept in a few. If they're empty why not. I've always had my tent with me though, as a backup.
I'm so keen to come out to Scottland and visit some of these Bothies. Its on the bucket list.
