      Cheers mate. I often look at new bikes but as soon as I’m out on the trails that idea is completely forgotten. It doesn’t matter what you ride, being out amongst it is just the best. My passion for cameras has really helped me want to get out to as many new places as I can. It’s a good motivator. As soon as I finish a video all I can think about is planning the next 😂

    this was my favourite weekender living back in sydney, great to get the train out early morning. watch the sun come up as you glide through the hills. we pick up some bakery goods and head onto kingtablelands then to mcmahons point, andersons is closed but no real risk of danger and down to murphys with a decent climb after the creek crossing that pops you out nicely in woodford for the oaks trail and nice speedy descent to glenbrook. love ya work Tim

      Cheers mate, it’s so good sitting on the train seeing the low clouds in the sun lit valleys, knowing you’re about to get out and ride it. I’ve done it a few times now, this was the first time as an overnighter. I Always forget how steep those climbs are 😂 A great day or overnighter.

      @@philtahmindjis1211Oh mate that’s awesome. I love it down there. I think i was right about saying don’t watch the next one. It’s nearly finished. We snow show up to Horse camp hut and Whites river hut. We had perfect weather. It was so nice! Next time I think I’ll try split boarding!
      As for the riding, I always have a backpack for my camera gear and this camera bag has a water bladder so it’s handy. It’s big though! It’s generally pretty empty on these rides so yeah. It’s ends up with beer and the odd extra jacket if I think I’ll need it. I don’t like wearing a backpack but it’s pretty comfy so I’ve stuck with it. My camera is pretty expensive so it scares me having it bounce around on the bike. I think I need a smaller dedicated bikepacking camera but I’ve got other bikepacking items on the “to buy” list so that will have to wait!

    Bikepacking on a 90s mtb is pretty bad ass. Pretty crazy too, I know, I did it for 60 days once. The cool part is that the geometry allows for the saddle to be used as the perfect handle to haul the bike uphill instead of pushing on the far side handlebar, it's much more efficient and ergonomic. The one thing I'd never do again though is bikepacking with a rigid fork.

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve really enjoyed riding on the old bikes! I think I can have as much fun on the old bike as I could with a modern expensive bike! I often think about getting a new bike but when I’m out riding it never crosses my mind. I find with a load they feel even better to ride then when they’re empty. They seem to flex nicely! Even the rigid forks 😁 I honestly have no issues with the rigid!

      Oh man, if it wasn’t so wet you could camp out in your 4wd at that first lookout we went too. A sunset there would be amazing. I’ve driven down to it before and that was with standard tyres and no lift. It was fine back then, it’s very wet and boggy at the moment. Saying that I’ve seen you’re pretty good at getting out of boggy situations 😜
      A camp then ride from there would be cool.

      Making videos is half the fun for me. Glad you saw me on Nik’s bike, it was your comment from the Pockets hut video that made me have to do it 😀
      I keep seeing trails being washed away from all this rain. It’s getting frustrating. I nearly went for a ride 2 weeks ago down in the Kangaroo Valley, I was going to make a video in the rain but decided the forecast was a bit extreme. Turns out a local rain gauge captured 861mm in the 3 days I was meant to be there. Glad I bailed on that one.
      I’m definitely keen for some more train loops, looks like I’ll have to keep an eye out for track work before attempting any trips.

    I'm planning my first bikepacking trip - thanks to your inspirational content.
    A couple of questions:
    Do you carry a bike lock?
    Do you bother locking your bike at the camp ground?
    How much water did you carry in to Ingar Camp ground?
    Do you use a "footprint" under your tent?
    (sorry for all the questions, thanks for your help)

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi mate, I’ve recently been changing things up a bit. All my rides I was wearing a big backpack to carry camera equipment and that backpack had a 3 litre water bladder. That would generally last me every ride I did for drinking water and I’d collect water from creeks to boiler for dehydrated meals etc. These days I have a new hip pack that holds my camera so I generally carry less water. (No camelbak bladder anymore)
      As for This trip. You could have all your bottles full in town and then you could either fill up at Bedford creek or up at Ingar campground if needed. There really isn’t many hill climbs so you shouldn’t need much water. Day 2 when you climb up to Woodford there is a tap at the start of the oaks trail. Great spot to fill up before riding the 2nd half of the trip. A lot of people do this ride as a day trip.
      No I don’t carry a lock, I have before but it’s just extra weight. If you’re camping somewhere cars can get too then maybe locking up your bike is a good idea. Out in the middle of nowhere I’d think you’re pretty safe.
      My old tent was pretty heavy with a thick base and I never used a ground sheet. My new Big Agnes has a super thin base and yes I use a ground sheet. I really don’t want to put a hole in such an expensive tent. I suppose it depends what tent you have. The big Agnes floor is so thin it’s crazy.
      Hope that helps and doesn’t confuse you more. 👍

    Great videos! I’ve kept watching many of your films this afternoon. I’ve a question on back of my head: what cassette and derailleur have you installed on your 1990s bike? I see something big on your rear wheel. 46T or 51T? Have you replaced the entire wheel or just the hub?

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mate, Yes I'm running a 9 speed 11-46 tooth cassette. When I bought my first 90's bike I converted it to disk brakes so I had to buy a cheap set of 2nd hand wheels with disks. This rear wheel was more modern obviously and had an 8 speed hub which meant I can run anything up to 11 speed. When I got the Mongoose in this video I wanted to keep it rim brakes so I did some research. I think I found the 8speed freehub but I never tried it. I think the part number was Shimano Y-3SL98030. If you remove the axle you can fit a hex wrench into the 7 speed freehub and it unscrews and then I believe the 8 speed screws in to replace it. I could be wrong because I didn't try, I ended up removing the complete hub with disk and lacing it into the rim that suited rim brakes. Now I have a rear wheel that can go on a bike with either disk brakes or rim brakes with this modern cassette. The front is the same. you will see the disk is still on this front wheel but its actually rim brake. I had never built a wheel before and I used this video to guide me. I quiet enjoyed the process. hope this helps. Cheers! th-cam.com/video/X5gs00ttvdg/w-d-xo.html

      Cheers Mate, You have a very good question, I would like to take my 8 year nephew on a trip somewhere that's not too far from Sydney. All I've ever found is trails with some big hills. I think the dirt road out to Perrys Lookdown campground is pretty flat but it's very short. I think that campground is still closed too. An option could be to do something similar to us. Park at Glenbrook and get a train to Woodford. Ride the oaks trail and camp at Euroka Campground. Day 2 would then be pretty short ride back to the car. The climb out of Glenbrook Creek is steep but its bitumen so not too bad. One place I do want to camp is Banks Wall. Its not a camp site but the sunset view would have to be one of the best spots in the blue mountains. Its about 6km from the car park. If you want to see some footage of that area, Watch the first edit of my "2021 Unfinished Edits" Video. It's from December last year. Very temping spot to camp. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Definitely a little tricky find good routes through the mountains. Cheers, Tim.

      Cheers mate. Yes I think this is a great little trip for a novice. You’re pretty close to civilisation yet it feels like you’re deep in the bush. The hill climb up to Ingar campground is very steep but you can just walk your bike like i did. You can also make this ride shorter by not doing the extra part down to McMahons Point, just turn onto the Anderson trail earlier.
      There is also Murphy’s Glen campground which is close to Ingar but you can drive cars there. I like to camp where cars can’t access. It feels like a better bikepacking experience.

      @@JoeSmith-me8ej Awesome mate, glad you got it done and I’m assuming you enjoyed it if you’re asking for route number 2. I’m really not sure what to suggest, did you want something close to Sydney again? I haven’t done a lot close to Sydney. There is a loop on the Omafiets website which is around the Lithgow area and rides through the Glow worm tunnel and camp is at Newnes. I’ve wanted to do it for a while but it just hasn’t happened yet.
      Canberra has some nice rides, Namadgi is a good option. The Centenary trail was really good too. I’ve nearly finished a video on it which shows the whole loop.

    Awesome bikepacking trip. Did you convert your Mongoose to 27.5" and if yes how much of a difference is it compared to the original 26"? I'm thinking about doing that myself with my old 90s Bridgestone MB.

      Cheers mate! No this still has the 26inch wheels. The black rims and chunkier than normal tyres make it look like it has bigger wheels. It’s also a small frame that probably adds to that illusion.
      I’m currently filming a video where I’m converting an old bike to 27.5 so once done I’ll keep you updated. 👍

      @@advanturest Thanks for the reply, mate! Looking forward to that video. I really like that you go on all these bikepacking adventures on an old 90s MTB. I think that's where they really shine. ☺️

      @@marrzipan I originally bought an old bike just to see if I liked bikepacking and have since fallen in love with both the old bikes and bikepacking. Apart from some dodgy worn out drivetrains I haven’t had an issue. Since buying a new groupset (which I keep swapping between bikes) it’s been perfect. I have tried one frame which was super stiff but apart from that they have all felt great.
      I don’t even care about the 26inch wheels, maybe that’s because I’m short? I’m only converting a bike to 27.5 for an experiment. I also have a decent dually with light carbon wheels. I kind of want to try them so I need the forks and frame to fit the bigger wheels. I just like tinkering haha! ✌️

    Did you retrofit the disc brakes to that old mongoose? If so, was it difficult to do?

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually had a wheel with rim brake walls but It also had a disk on the hub. For this bike I was using the rim brakes. Saying that I’ve just converted another old bike to disk and it wasn’t too bad if you have a few tools. I found online the ISO (international Standard) for the calliper position. I then welded on a mount that I bought from a framebuilding site. The brakes fit perfectly first go. I’ve filmed the whole thing too and hoping to film the video intro this weekend. When I upload it I’ll post it here.
      In the meantime here is a video that helped me. It’s a new bike but it helped explain how to add the calliper mounts in the correct position. He also has the link to the ISO standards which I used to get my position perfect!
      He does the rear where I do the forks.

      They’re both on the Kona Unit. Nice bikes.
      As for bike checks. Every trip I do I plan to film and mention everyone bikes and setup. I always forget though. I’m going to put a sticker on my camera so I can remember 😂
      Cheers mate!

    Is your old mongoose still running 26" wheels?

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is! The small frame kind of gives the illusion of bigger wheels though.

    I can confirm you need more then a 750ml camelback to get through this 😂

    I've been looking at this exact route for my first bikepacking trip a bit later in the year. This video could not be better timed. Thanks mate!
    Any reason you chose Ingar over Murphy's Glen campground?

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent, Good to hear! I’ve never camped at Murphy’s Glen but I have ridden down there. It’s nice but when I was there, there was heaps of car campers down there. I’ve always wanted to check out Ingar so that was the decision. I also like the idea of camping where cars can’t get to. That’s a nice thing about bikepacking. Either are nice, camping at Murphy’s glen will mean you go up the killer hill In the arvo of day 1 rather than the morning. Murphy’s still has a decent hill though but no where near as long.
