Solo Bikepacking Trip - Kanagra-Boyd NP
After a busy few months, and a desire to play with some video files. I had been craving getting out and filming as much as i could on my main camera so i could make something and practise my colour grading. This is a slow solo trip around Kanagra-Boyd National Park with heaps of tripod shots.
At the end of the video I talk about doing a group ride for my birthday.
Here are some details.
GROUP RIDE IDEA
For my 40th birthday i'll be doing a ride from Jindabyne to Jindabyne. Below is a link to a ride with GPS with a rough idea. I've also linked a video that someone else did years ago. If anyone is interested feel free to reach out. Dates will probably be early to mid December. sometime before School Holidays.

Swift Campout - Winter Solstice Bikepacking - Brandy Flat Hut, Namadgi NP

The Swift Campout is a thing, Bike camping over the Solstice weekend. So, on the longest night of the year, a group of riders from Canberra do just that. This year, when I heard it was happening I put it in my diary. Unsure whether I'd be available, I had it in the back of my mind. The week before Sarah told me she was busy, so I got my bike ready, and made it happen. I really wasn't sure what ...

    Love the vid, I always do! The chinese handlebars though,I think people shouldn't buy all that cheap ali express or whatever cheap Chinese suppliers stuff.. Ultra bad working conditions for the workers (read human beings like you and me), bad materials, it's rubbish, it breaks then we throw it out (maybe even before use because of disappointment or fear of breakage) so it's extremely polluting.. It's not the kind of system we want to contribute to right?

      @@maartennico7910 i absolutely agree. I’m a bandit for recycling old bikes and riding them places they shouldn’t be ridden. I love to keep old stuff going as long as possible. These bars there is actually an interesting story. We’ll kind of. I was really keen to try drop bars on a bike, a friend was keen to try these corner bars so he ended up getting me a pair too. I was very skeptical at first and really didn’t trust them. Over time, and many km’s, I slowly learnt that they did the job and they felt tough enough. Until they broke. Saying this, the angle of the flare and the pressure my heavy bike put on the corner joint, I’m not surprised they broke. Maybe this is why Surly don’t make a carbon model. Or maybe it’s the whole carbon recycling thing. I’m always happy to pay a premium for better gear and support quality working conditions, unfortunately it’s hard to tell what you get and what you pay for sometimes. I’m taking about paying a premium for brands we trust only to find they’re also getting made it dodgy factories. I’ve only bought one thing from Ali express and it was a small Ulanzi tripod that I use on my trips. I rang countless local shops looking for a tiny tripod that could carry my heavy camera. The Ulanzi was the only option I could find and the only place I could buy was Ali Express. As for the working conditions, how do we tell? This is definitely a good topic that we should all think about when buying goods. Anyway, I don’t plan on buying these bars again. I did just get another old bike out of the graveyard to play with though 😂 1988 model I believe.

    Hi Tim love your videos and thanks for some great ideas for bike packing trips. Just thought I'd let you know about the ride I did along the Cascades trail in Oct 2023 in case it helps for your planned ride at the end of the year. I rode from the start of the trail at Dead Horse Gap out to the PInch River campground on the Barry Way. It was a beautiful ride but the last 6-7 km was pretty hellish, a 900m descent. This last section was far to steep to ride (for me anyway) and the surface was gravel the size of marbles, very slippery! After a few falls and run away bikes, it was easier to push our bikes through the bush on the side of the road. I think that last 7kms took about 3 hours. If I was doing it again I'd keep going, (not sure if this is possble though) past Chritsie O'Rourkes Hut and then out onto the Barry Way. Longer and still steep but might be a bit more pleasant. Also we parked a car at the PInch River camp ground, riding up the Barry Way would be a nightmare, up, up, up for 54kms!

      @@madelinehourihan795 Hi Madeline. Thanks for that info. I’m going to start with the Christie O’Rouke’s Hut. I haven’t heard of this one and the first thing I do when I get home is some research on it and the potential alternative route. This day was always going to be the shortest so I would think we would have time to explore further. As for the original idea. I’ve heard it’s very steep. Part of me wants to experience it for myself. If I find an alternative route I may have both options available and get everyone to vote on the day. One of the gents that is keen to come is Gerard who made the video that I attached in the description. He has done it before and didn’t seem phased about doing it again. I might also let people know they can drop a car at the bottom if they wish. I’ve got a bit of a goal to complete the loop through. When I look at maps the steepest part is the first 25km and then I’m hoping it flattens out heading into Jindy. Maps always lie though 😂

    Nice one mate! Whats the name of that huge camp area? Might ride out there myself soon

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not 100% sure if it has a name, or even sure if camping is aloud there. The management plan says you can wild camp as long as you are 300m off a track. To me this isn't a popular track so just went with it. Anyway i'll explain what i found as i don't think googling it will give you an exact location. I was searching satellite images around kanagra boyd and noticed these grassy areas. I then moved over to 6maps website because their satellite images are higher resolution. On 6 maps it had a name called Whalania Heights. After googling it i found a video and this. thats about all i can find. dingogap.net.au/places/whalania-heights What i can tell you. The trail that had a bike loop called the Krungle Bungle loop, was a trail called Moorara Boss Trail. If you went in there you would loop around to it. Another interesting thing. All trails on that side of the road had locked gates, although I rode past one trail on my way back to the car that goes straight into this grassy area and i couldn't see a gate. maybe it was deeper in the bush???? I'd find it strange if you could drive in there. Saying this, A 4wd with hunting dogs in cages drove past me when i was set up at camp. The guy just waved and kept going. The area was closed for arial pest control and only opened the day i went. I just assumed it was to do with that operation. no idea now after seeing that trail. I have unfinished business out there haha. All trails head off from the main road out to Kanagra walls. Just satellite search that area and you should see the grassy areas on the eastern side of the road. Hope that helps Cheers

      Cheers mate. Yeah it can be a bit tough. Most of the places i go i have seen online or have previously visited and thought it would be cool to go back on bike. I use to do a lot of dirt bike riding and came across lots of nice places to camp. Some of my rides have been inspired by places i'd seen. I also search ridewithgps. If there is an area I'm interested in i often search that area for routes. maybe do a bit of a google satellite view and look for patches of grass. Its all over the place and honestly can be a bit of a gamble. Now with this channel i've met a few people and have been shown a few areas too. It can be very tricky picking a good route that avoids cars, is easy enough to ride etc. I've find myself being a little picky, but at the end of the day, ride anywhere and setup on a patch of grass. doesn't really matter where you are its always nice to be outside. I've got a goal to make a website with all my rides on, with photos and the videos and a bit of a write up. finding the time to do it though is hard. Cheers

      @@ControlAltGar Honestly, I don't know where people come up with these ideas. I'm not a frame builder so technically I know nothing, but If you look on a bike building store that sells fork blades for building your own forks. The wall thickness is like 0.9mm to 1mm. Its then up to the builder to decide if they want to weld or braise on disc brake tabs, or canti lever brake mounts etc. There are definitely cheap bikes with poor quality steel used which for sure could break. The forks i've worked on are all old but have been 4130 chromoly. They're very strong. There is a video by Cobra Framebuilding that talks about this. He thinks that a certain generation relates unicrown forks to cheap bikes. Heaps of the top brands still use unicrown forks, there is nothing wrong with them. But they use decent metal. I think you will be fine. Just quietly, I thought they would snap my first ride, but they have been great. The angle i dropped them, on that flared out piece was just too much leverage. My bike was also super heavy with all my cooking gear. big heavy tripod, drone, etc. its always heavy but this was probably the heaviest i've had that Raleigh. The wind blew it over like it was nothing and it hit the ground hard. Did you hear the crack when i was talking??? That was real audio of the break. I wasn't filming but i had my backup lav mic on. Crunch haha

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks mate. I was on another old 90's bike. It's a Raleigh Kalahari. Not exactly sure about age but i think its a 1992 model. I've converted it to 27.5" wheels and have these carbon corner bars on it. I'm really not sure what my next move is. I have a few old bikes I've been riding on these bikepacking trips, and next year i head of on a lap of Aus and i can only take 2 bikes. One will be my XC bike, the other will be something for bikepacking. Now this is broken i think i'll just leave it broken and see where 2025 takes me. I don't have an issue with Carbon Bars, but these in particular are a copy of the Surly corner bar which only come in steel. Due to their design and flare, I can see why they only make them in steel. Dropping the bike on the flared out section puts a lot of force on the area i broke it. just too much leverage. I think i may go back to alloy flat bars for now. I think its more me.

I stopped to take a photo of my bike, I turned around to see what direction looked best and this snake was just sitting over the trail. right where i just rode. haha. i wouldn't worry too much. Its been great and i've given it hell. Just the length of the flared out section and the weight my bike was, It was just too much force for the corner join. If you don't drop it hard like i did i think it will be fine.

    Mate, only a couple of minutes in - prior to my larger overall comment on the video - thought I might share my opinion on tyres FWIW (from over 15 years' experience living remote and commuting each day - 80ish kms with 27 of gravel each way every weekday for 15 years). I was a dyed-in-the-wool BFGoodrich fan, after years of disappointment with Goodyear, Mickey Thompson, Kumho, etc. etc, but a couple of years ago went with advice from my tyre guy and tried some Falken Wildpeak A/T. Hells bells mate, a little better as an AT tyre than the BFGs - and much quieter and smoother for those tarmac sections... wear well too... ...anywho back to the regularly scheduled program. ----30 minutes later --- Timmeh.... Best way to attract Tim...hang up some "Walkers Only" signs :D Another great video. Mate really appreciate you bringing us along - I know its trouble and a time sink but it's a great product...well for us anyway :) that looks a great little spot for exploring. Keen to hear more about what you find out about the area for cycling. Bummer about the bars. Timely though as I'm heading off for an overnighter tomorrow and I have carbon bars and seat post. Now you have me wondering whether I should fit out with some alloy just for this outing, I really don't wanna be walking that far back to the car ....:hmmm: Meanwhile, I'll reach out on Insta as I'm keen to join you in Dec if I can. Cheers, Mark

    • @advanturest

      Hi Mark, Too late about the tyres. Got the BFG's on Thursday. Saying this, I had the K02's and got about 80 to 90,000 kms. I was happy to go again. There is a new model called the K03 which are a little different and also made with new machines. Apparently a much better tyre. We'll see how they go. I'll be towing a caravan around the country next year so it will be a good test. Thanks for the advice anyway. I'm always doing hike a bike so surely i was allowed in there haha. As for the carbon bars, I wouldnt be worried. mine fell hard and my bike was super heavy. The corner bars also have the flared out section which just created good leverage to snap where they did. If i go them again i'll just be more carefull. Thanks for the kind message and i'll send you some info on insta. 👍

I used it so many times it end up costing me about $5 a night. When upgrading i knew i'd be using it heaps so just forked out the money. I just liked the look of it and couldn't resist 🤣 Its a great tent but the floor is very thin, I always use a ground sheet. I believe Mont tents have a much thicker floor. Saying this I've never had an issue or leaked water. It seams very tough.

      Thanks mate, Normally I like it when things go wrong, it creates a little drama for the videos. in this case the bars breaking was just annoying. It still rode fine. Me 2nd guessing why i was out there was also not part of the plan. not sure if it added much value but i was feeling a bit lost. thought i may as well share it. I still wish i had of done my full planned loop, I really wanted to have a beer at Kanagra Walls and go for a swim in the waterfall, It was just too hard with all the filming. I also had a goal of minimal GoPro footage. just wanted to do something different. I really like playing with the footage from my big camera and i find it quiet relaxing setting up the tripod shots. I enjoy it. I think doing it on smaller rides would be the smarter option. Thanks for watching 👍
