This was Hasbro bringing G1 back to the mainstream, but it also paved the way for future toylines like Generations, the Prime Wars trilogy, and Legacy.
Yeah, I feel like TJ is underplaying the importance of this line which is basically THE origin of the modern transformers Generations lines and the first time they were truly going back to the G1 well. It's hard to imagine today, but G1 fans had had basically nothing for ~15 years or so. I was born in 90 and grew up on the cartoon and Beast Wars, but obviously missed out on the opportunity to get any G1 characters until reissues began to come out in the 00s. This was the first time in my life that I could get a mainline figure that represented a G1 character I knew and loved from the cartoon, and it absolutely blew my mind.
I preferred these figures over what they do now. I loved that we got familiar bots with newer alt modes. It took me a while to even consider buying the newer figures that I already had from classics and the rest of chug.
Same reason why I liked a lot of IDW redesigns. You could still tell who they are, but they have modern alt modes to fit with the 2000s instead of the 80s.
This is my G1 this is what I grew up with, i had no clue who these characters were when I saw them in stores but bought them anyway because they looked great
I still prefer the classics seeker mold over the new one. It was just so perfectly done. Looked great in both modes, no gaps, was fun and easy to transform. I had all 3 seekers and the cone heads. Wish I hadn’t sold them years ago.
The Classics Rodimus was great. My wife and I's first Christmas married she got me the FansProject Protector upgrade. It was my Rodimus for my display etc till Kingdom Rodimus came out.
These were my intro to Transformers. The DVD of the '86 movie had come out too, and it blew me away. I still try to hold some of the Classics as definitive versions of those characters.
Suggestion to help keep the streak. Come up with a concept for some quick 5 minute videos. Do several in advance, save them for illnesses. Maybe something like comparing bio cards to depiction in comics/cartoons?
22:08 The one thing that crossed my mind a lot was this: if Megatron was forced to get a vehicle variant to accommodate gun laws, what would it have been like if Optimus got an object based alt mode as a mimic to Megatron's vehicle alt mode? (and I'm not referencing all the crazy miscellaneous objects he got turned into via brand sponsors like a Nike shoe either!)
Bumblebee was my main version of the G1 character for a solid 15 years, and Classics Ramjet is still on my shelf today. As someone born early enough to watch the G1 cartoon but too late to buy most of the G1 figures, this line was nuts. I quickly fell in love with Beast Wars, enjoyed the Unicron trilogy, and scrounged together whatever I could from reissues, but to actually start getting modern versions of the G1 characters I knew and loved for the first time ever was INCREDIBLE. And man, some of them were genuinely incredible.
You mentioning that deluxe 2 pack of Optimus Prime and Megatron immediately brought me back to my childhood. I remembered as a kid getting that 2 pack at a toy store in a mall close to my first home, and I loved playing with them. Over time, I started favoring the Optimus more and after Revenge of the Fallen came out, and its tie-in games, I actually occasionally used modeling clay to make a Jet Powered armor for him. As for that Megatron, it was decent, and actually the first time I learned of Megatron having a tank alt mode before his original gun mode, and I thought nothing of it. So there's my trip down memory lane for all to see. Hope it wasn't an embarrassment for y'all.
I really wish they'd go back to this style for Generations tbh, it's great to get accurate modernizations, yeah, but getting these new spins on classic characters was great and I'd like to see what they could off with it with todays engineering
I was just out of high school in this era and only could grab a few of these, but this is absolutely how I want older characters done. More modern vehicle molds, some paint changes, but still instantly recognizable
I like the idea behind it. It felt to me like what if they had come on in the 2000's instead of the 1980's. I like the advance in modern designs with the articulation - but a part of me wishes they'd adapted MODERN DAY vehicles with the G1 robot modes. @21:00 And don't forget just making Ultra Magnus white Optimus Prime repaints as well. CC prove Hasbro left money on the table.
I don't understand why Shockwave can't still be a gun, when his gun mode already looks like a scifi nerf gun, and the action master has orange. So he could had orange barrel.
Literally explained in the video. Transformers typically get used for about 5 years before the molds are considered too expensive to run, sometimes longer. In that time, if a gun law changes again, they lose money on a toy they expected more uses out of. So safer to avoid it altogether.
The joke at the start was good. I got Bumblebee for Christmas in 2006. Years later I got Optimus Prime and Megatron. Some good molds they made. For a throwaway line it sure left a legacy.
it's wild that we've been doing modern updates of the G1 cast, for longer than G1 itself actually lasted. and we still haven't finished the roster even once.
That Mirage was great! I almost didn't buy the Earthrise one because I was happy with that version and wasn't sure if I needed a new version. That Starscream was perfection without being a Masterpiece. I remember being so upset when the Botcon Games of Decepticon set came out and that was the only way to get Dirge, Thrust, and Thundercracker to complete your Decepticon jets and if you didn't go to Botcon, the after Market prices were ridiculous. Yes Hasbro did finally release them years later with new molds to differentiate them from the Botcon set as not to violate the agreement, but remember Takara did it first with their Henkei line. Those even though they would be imports cost less than the Botcon set and those conehead molds for Dirge and Thrust wound up being what Hasbro would use later on whem they did their retail release
2 of my favorite upgrade kit from this Era are city commander armor and protector armor it really rounded out and fixed a lot of issues with Classics Ultra Magnus and classics Rodimus Prime
Oh wow, I own way too many of these (from back in 2006/7). Bumblebee + trailer, Astrotrain, Ultra Magnus, Skywarp, Ramjet, Optimus + Megatron multipack, Megatron gun, Grimlock. Per my ranking system, none of them break out of the C ranks, but I enjoyed them at the time.
