I don’t think lumping in Brawl regarding “Combiner team syndrome” is fair to him. I mean, he kind of stands out as the dumb muscle/simple-minded brute, it’s more so Blast Off and Vortex that don’t really stand out.
Agreed, mostly. I think Brawl was sufficiently shown as the gung ho brute - exactly as he was in WFC videogame; as you said. Just like G1 and TFA Swindle is a swindler. But the other three really didn't get to show much, Blast Off especially. Onslaught didn't do much either. Vortex showed a bit of his tormenting nature, but that's it. So yeah, Brawl's like the 2nd most prominent Combaticon, after Swindle.
I pretty much mostly think about Prime Dreadwing when I think of the name Dreadwing. The Combined Jetmode of Darkwing & Dreadwind doesn't really have much of a personality, & while the G2 bomber is their own character, they aren't all too significant. Heck I associate that design with Beastwars II BB more than anything else.
There’s also his twin brother from Prime Skyquake, not many remember the G1 toy that could combine with Needlenose in both their vehicle modes, a play feature that was referenced and replicated with their recent Legacy toys.
@@bryannkam Well Skyquake was Euro G1 and Needlenose wasn't part of the Predators. But I'm still waiting on a Selects version of the Legacy Needlenose/Windsweeper mold for that combination. Maybe during the new Prime trilogy coming next year.
Fun fact: G1 Scattershot was the big one for me, because ive never seen the Unicron Trilogy so naturally im like "..Theres a more important Scattershot??". Me knowing Scattershot so well is probaby due to me owning the CW figure, because he was the closest i could get to Silverbolt
Surprisingly, the 2007 movie Blackout wasn't as innovative as it may initially seem. It was likely based upon his appearance in Transformers Energon, where he also transformed into a helicopter, and was a character alongside (shockingly) Barricade and Bonecrusher. Blackout combined with Barricade among others to form Bruticus Maximus.
Yeah but Energon Blackout is literally a renamed Blast Off (check the Japanese name) that does nothing in the show more than being Bruticus's limb, same for Barricade other than replace limb with torso and being a renamed Onslaught. They don't even have profiles to take anything from. And given both movie characters began life as new versions of Soundwave and Prowl, there's less reason to believe there's a connection rather than the movie producers just looking at a list of D-tier namedumps they could pull from.
I'm surprised you didn't include Dirtboss (animated) or Rampage (Beast Wars) because those are definitely the guys I see more fanart of than their G1 counterparts. But then neither Dirtboss nor the rest of the Constructicons got a toy for their show.
Dirtboss wasn't G1 and Rampage wasn't a Constructicon in G1. And G1 Rampage hasn't really been overshadowed by Beast Wars Rampage. A lot of people remember him.
G1 Rampage is tied to his teammates the Predacons (ironically the namesake for BW Rampage's entire faction). Edit: and TJ does mention BW Rampage when he talks about G1 and BW Silverbolt.
Tbh, I usually think of Cybertron Dirt Boss about as much as I do feel like Animated took Dirt Boss’ personality from Cybertron but made him a bit nastier
Well toyline characters and those with brief comic appearances are less known than those showing up years later in a shoe watched worldwide. I dont think theres anythingwrong with the original versions, but as someone who started with the Unicron Trilogy the new versions are what come to mind first.
movie Crosshairs...I remember when they showed him in the movie where he basically turned his car into a trench coat, all I ever thought was "wow...so you're just straight up designing a shell former huh?" Yeah I never liked that design...
All of the Unicron Trilogy transformers got new names whenever they upgraded or revived in the Japanese version. Only Roadblock, Grapple, and Swonstorm kept their changed names while Mirage was a complete name change since in Japan he was Shockfleet.
I'm not even sure that's true, though, because as Movie Dinobots, go, Slog (or Sludge as I think most of us still think of him) didn't really get much exposure outside the toy, as far as I know.
@@R0-83-RT I'd go with depresso Deadend or wildly insane Wildrider, personally. I don't even remember what characteristics any of the others have, if any.
@@TornaitSuperBird yeah that's what I said? High-strung is kind of synonymous with paranoia. *Edit* while by definition Paranoia and High-strung aren't 1 to 1, typically someone who is paranoid will be High-strung.
Seeing the pic reminds me… why don’t we have Energon Inferno/Roadblock from the Siege Ironhide mold? Also, since it came up, Skyhammer seems to be a name that has yet to find a “real” owner. It just gets brought out every few years for a new guy. And of course Energon Landmine has so replaced his original that depictions that were supposed to be G1 ended up being him.
To me all of them just happen to have the same name as the originals but they'd both live in the same world, sharing names. Same goes for rotb Wheeljack, he could exist as another wheeljack.
I think you're overhyping Energon Roadblock a bit. Even considering he wasn't called him in Japan, it was his second name, and he was very clearly designed as a new version of Grapple, I think any Energon character is going to have an uphill battle in terms of displacing things when Energon is generally a pretty poorly-regarded show. (Just observe how badly Bulkhead was forgotten.)
I grew up with a unicron trilogy and I do associate the name roadblock with the Energon version of the character and alot of people are major fans of the Energon inferno mold since he is the best figure out of the deluxe assortment and the repaint gets the same love
He got more characterisation in the cartoon than Pointblank and Sureshot. By which I mean he got about three or four lines. 😜 "Of course, I _have_ been wrong on _one or two_ occasions..." 😏
Always liked energon roadblock/inferno had the roadblock version pretty nice figure hopefully when energon gets its turn inferno gets something new, story wise pretty alright in energon for what energon is
Where's Cybertron Quickmix, bro? Edit: So this video is just a cursory glance of certain Transformers characters (i.e. Cybertron Override and Age of Extinction Crosshairs) who became more popular than their G1 namesakes. TJ's line at 18:35 reinforces this.
NOBODY cares AT ALL about either G1 OR Energon Roadblock (and I do like the G1 version), NEITHER version "overshadowed" the other. The name is relevant because of the G.I. Joe character, where he is one of the top 5 most iconic characters overall, one of the top 3 on the hero side.
For the sake of keeping this list short I'm going to avoid mentioning all the reused names when I still remember the original but just not as fondly as their more modern depictions and stick only to characters where I just don't think of the original at all. I'm not going to limit this to just G1 names either because there are a few examples of more modern names that have also been over shadowed. Jetstorm actually had THREE uses of that name before the Beast Machines version which is what everyone generally thinks of now. The first was an Aquaspeeder who turned into a car. The second version, still a car. The third version was a Beast Wars Dragonfly. How did it take them 4 tries before they made a Jetstorm who was actually a jet? And every reuse of the name after Beast Machines have all been jets. Rollbar who was originally a G1 Throttlebot. Oddly enough whenever I hear that name I'm more likely to think of the Swindle repaint from RID2001 or even the Mini-con from Armada that came with Scavenger before I'd ever think of the Throttlebot. Hot Shot, not a G1 name but the first use of the name is from RID2001. Everyone always forgets he was a Spy Changer just 1 series before he was the kid appeal character of Armada. The Spy Changers are easily forgotten cause Mirage was the only one who ever had an episode dedicated to him and the rest were just sort of there. Jolt, here's a weird one, the original version has been over shadowed even by 2 modern versions who were barely even characters. The original was a Decepticon from G2, the Mini-con partner of Hot Shot is more well known than the original. Then there's the RotF version who's only in the movie for ONE SCENE where he uses his electro whips to attach Jetfire's parts to Optimus. Even that Jolt is more well remembered than the original. But I think the Jolt more people would actually think of is the one from Cybertron who's really the only Jolt with actual speaking lines. Jetfire, since I think more people remember the cartoon rather than the toys I'm pretty sure G1 is more well known as Skyfire. It's kind of by default that the name Jetfire makes us think of more modern versions than the original who used an entirely different name in the cartoon. Overload, you kind of mentioned this in the video but there's actually 3 modern Overloads and RID2015 is the only one with a prominent role in any media so I think he would over shadow not only the G1 but also Armada and the movie version cause Overload was also one of the Contructicons in RotF but no one would even know that unless they pay close attention to the toy line. Longarm, the name was originally Red Alert's Mini-con in Armada. It's been reused for a few different Mini-cons. It was also a movie toy in 2007 but since it wasn't an actual character in the movie it's easy to forget about. No Transformers Animated Shockwave is now the character we all think of as Longarm. Scavenger, I wasn't going to include too many Combiner team members but this one is so generic I always forget which one he is. Armada Scavenger is really the one that actually stands out in my mind because he doesn't have to compete with other Constructicons. Whenever there's a Scavenger among a team of Constructicons I just forget about him or mix him up with Scrapper. Bulkhead who everyone will generally think of the one from Animated or Prime, was originally an Energon character. He was a grumpy old helicoptor. The name fits so much better on the modern version than it did for Energon. Downshift is a G1 Omnibot but more people will remember him as the guy from the Unicron Trilogy who looks like Wheeljack but wasn't called that because they gave that name to a different character who died in Armada. What's funny is Energon got the names backwards so Cliffjumper was actually the name of "Wheeljack" in the cartoon but Downshift was "Wheeljack" in the toy line. Cybertron the only series that consistently called him Downshift yet he's still more memorable as Downshift than the actual Downshift. Skyblast is an Energon Omnicon who is designed as a homage to Skyfire but used the name of an Armada Mini-con and I actually forgot that the name was reused. Till I was looking it up for this post. Strongarm was originally a Energon Omnicon as well and the name was reused FOUR OTHER TIMES before RID2015. She's over shadowed FIVE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS using her name. Barricade was a Micromaster and an Energon combiner leader before he was the Police car from the 2007 movie. Mudflap was a crane truck from Transformers Cybertron who's since been over shadowed by the Autobot twin from RotF. Unfortunately he's most well known for being a racist black stereotype even though the voice actor for him is actually black and was essentially just being himself. Reno Wilson was the one who decided to portray the twins that way and was called racist against his own race for doing it. Some times being the most well known version of a character isn't a good thing. Skids is another one who you're probably going to think of the twins before the original Skids. Dirt Boss was originally a Mini-Con in Armada, then a Monster truck from Cybertron, and I think both versions have been over shadowed by the Animated Dirt Boss who only had 1 episode dedicated to him. That's pretty impressive when the previous Dirt Bosses were in way more episodes but are completely forgotten about. Sideways first appeared in RID2001 toy line but was never in the cartoon. I'm pretty sure most people are going to think of Armada or Cybertron over any Sideways that came before or after. Tailgate, is it weird that an Autobot who existed only to die in a flash back in Prime is more memorable to me than the G1 version? He's had a prominent role in comics but as someone who doesn't really read comics I don't have any attachment to that depiction of the character and I don't think he was ever in the cartoon outside of his death in Prime. Knockout also had FIVE DIFFERENT uses of that name before Prime. I always think of him as a totally originally character completely forgetting that his name existed before that. Dreadwing had SIX uses of that name before Prime and I actually owned one of them, I still manage to forget he exists. G1 Skyquake I remember more as Machine Wars Starscream or Universe King Atlas. I don't really associate that mold with Skyquake. Heatwave was originally the leader of the Nexus Prime combiner before Rescue Bots. Chase was originally a G1 Throttlebot before Rescue Bots. Salvage was originally a movie pick up truck and a Power Core combiner before he was the garbage truck in Rescue Bots. Fixit was a G1 Micromaster. Clampdown was originally a repaint of G1 Red Alert in Prowl colors as a Decepticon before he was the RID2015 Decepticon who makes way more sense with that name even if I don't like the design. Fracture was originally Mirage repainted as Go Bots Crasher before RID2015 made him an original character. Clobber was originally the name of Titan Master Grimlock's head before it became female Lugnut. And I'm glad they didn't just call her Lugnut as making her Clobber gives her an identity separate from him. Nightbird was originally a human built robot who only appeared in 1 episode of the G1 cartoon, didn't transform and she's since been depicted as an actual Transformer in Cyberverse and Rise of the Beasts. Hardtop was originally a Transformers Cybertron character before he was Swindle's brother in Earthspark. Jawbreaker is a reused name who was also G1 Overbite and a BW character before Earthspark. Roadbuster, Topspin, and Leadfoot I'm going to think of the Wreckers from DotM. I know they're all reused names but I'm just never going to think of the original versions. Crankcase is also a G1 name but the first one to come to mind is the Dread from DotM. I could name a lot more, this was my short list!
Cyberverse Clobber was penned as Lugnut by the show's writers. Hasbro didn't approve of genderbending him, so they had to name change.. thus Clobber. Armada Wheeljack never died. But he should've been called Sideswipe (a name that went to an unfitting mold and character), since his mold was a clear homage to G1 'swiper. Nevertheless, in Energon.. It's as you said: the G1 Wheeljack homage was called "Cliffjumper" initially, but got corrected late into the cartoon as Downshift - same as the toy packaging. Downshift had a new muscle car toy in Cybertron, but never appeared in the show. Does Hardtop even count when Earthspark's version is a clear homage to his Cybertron toy? Up until some comic changed things, Sideways (like Unicron) was a multiversal singularity; meaning every Sideways toy is the exact same character, even if characteristics are different [ROTF]. So technically he still counts since he's been retconned, but RID 2001, Armada/Cybertron, Robot Masters, and TFA Sideways were originally all the one guy. I feel bad for Cybertron Mudflap. He has a cool design, transformation, and figure. Could use an update, but mightn't happen because of the name affiliation to the bayverse twin... Such a shame. I'm so surprised Knock Out and Barricade weren't mentioned. They're like the big examples of this topic. Bayverse/TFP incarnations are so impactful, they've got G1 redesigns even though there are G1 characters with their names already. I mean, Siege and Earthrise even released 2 G1'ified toys for Barricade, before his original micromaster G1 guy got his new toy!
@@sideways3458 Well I'm glad she wasn't a gender bent Lugnut because she isn't Lugnut. She has an entirely different personality as well as being a different gender and just stands out as an entirely different character. I kind of see her as Lugnut's twin sister. They share some DNA but are not the same. I barely remember Armada and hated that series. I just kind of assumed he died since he never appears in any of the sequel material. And I honestly thought Downshift was in Cybertron but I guess that was toy only for that series. Anyway... the cartoon always got the names backwards in Energon so he was Cliffjumper that entire series. I do remember that much. Energon was way more consistent with the name swapping than Armada was. With Atmada you had things like Toy Packaging swapping the names of Jetstorm and Runway while the instruction sheet reversed their names and the cartoon also swapping their names to the point where still to this day I have no idea which is meant to have what name. I assume Jetstorm is the tip of the sword blade because he vaguely looks like Beast Machines Jetstorm if you squint at him. Sonar is the only member of that team who is consistently called by the same name. Although there may have been a running change in the toy line that corrected the error, I know later releases of Sideways corrected his heads to match the cartoon better but I have an early run release where Rook is the Decepticon head and Crosswise in the Autobot. If you have a late run release it's the other way around matching how he was in the cartoon. And I do think the Dark Saber version did use consistent names for Jetstorm and Runway but the original Star Saber swapped their names three different times depending on where you were looking. Grindor and Shureshot had their names swapped a lot as well and Shureshot was even called Sparkplug once in the cartoon. The actual Sparkplug was only address by his correct name once in the entire cartoon by Hot Shot. Optimus never called his Mini-con partner by the correct name. Have I mentioned how much I hate that series? What do you mean "a clear homage" I'm looking at them right now and the only similarity I can see is they both have visors. That is the most vague similarity ever when A LOT of characters have visors like that. I guess the colors are similar too but the color placement is entirely different and I'm color blind so I'm not even sure if that's accurate to say that they share a color pallet. Yeah I don't believe the multiversal singularity nonsense. I mean RotF Sideways literally DIED in like 2 minutes. How we were expected to believe he was the same guy if he's still alive in other universes? I'm glad they "retconned" it but I never believed it was ever a thing in the first place. To me making them the same guy was the retcon and they were never meant to be the same guy. I assume he didn't mention Barricade because I think everyone knows that's a name reuse. Knock Out however I do agree is surprising because I genuinely forgot it was a reuse till I was doing research for my original post. I actually HAVE Armada Knock Out and still forgot he existed. Yes I hate the cartoon and both the show and the toy line constantly mixing up the characters names but I actually do like the designs of the toys even if I have no idea what most of their names are. So I do actually own almost the entire Armada toy line except for 1 figures I could never find... Nemesis Prime.
@@R0-83-RT. Even still, that’s nowhere near to the extent of Transformers. Override, Landmine (I want the rest of the Autobot pretenders and Submarauder too... the UT name saves to me are blasphemous because they were so off. I wish that Hasbro, once they saw how popular the show and toys were, locked the names to the original characters and toys. Other franchises didn't mix and mismatch and turn characters into other characters as much as Transformers did.

I don't think most 80s kids even think Transformers with "Roadblock." That name was already long since taken even before the Ultra Pretender!
Wait. That green bot standing beside drift in age of extinction was crosshairs?
Landmine for me is always going to be the Sector 7 buggy that came out in 2007, I remember that being the first Transformers toy I ever got
There was also an unreleased Blackout that was an ehobby seeker
g2 but yes
I will always adore the design of movie crosshairs. His characterization is obviously a different topic, but he just has such a cool silhouette
Movie Blackout was originally designed as Soundwave, that's why he has a minion... but he changed so much they gave him a new name of Blackout.
Of course, it isn't just limited to just G1. Energon Strongarm is all but forgotten today compared to the RID 2015 character
Just like Energon Bulkhead - TFA or TFP is who anyone thinks of nowadays.
Well toyline characters and those with brief comic appearances are less known than those showing up years later in a shoe watched worldwide. I dont think theres anythingwrong with the original versions, but as someone who started with the Unicron Trilogy the new versions are what come to mind first.
10:33 Landfill is Devastator’s long lost cousin
movie Crosshairs...I remember when they showed him in the movie where he basically turned his car into a trench coat, all I ever thought was "wow...so you're just straight up designing a shell former huh?" Yeah I never liked that design...
Override g1 was my first transformer I got when I was 5 years old.
All of the Unicron Trilogy transformers got new names whenever they upgraded or revived in the Japanese version. Only Roadblock, Grapple, and Swonstorm kept their changed names while Mirage was a complete name change since in Japan he was Shockfleet.
Geez… I had the G1 Over Ride and Landfill as a kid… Hell… I bet they’re still in my parent’s attic… 😮 This was cool! Thx! 😎
Slog is more well known as the movie dinobot than the G1 monster pretender
I'm not even sure that's true, though, because as Movie Dinobots, go, Slog (or Sludge as I think most of us still think of him) didn't really get much exposure outside the toy, as far as I know.
Now I'm curious, who would we say the standout character of the Stunticons is?
I'd say either Breakdown or Deadend. At least those are one's that stick out to me outside of Motormaster
@@R0-83-RT I'd go with depresso Deadend or wildly insane Wildrider, personally. I don't even remember what characteristics any of the others have, if any.
@@sideways3458 Breakdown was high strung, he was kind of like the Decepticon equivalent to Red alert.
@@R0-83-RTBreakdown is the extremely paranoid one.
Drag Strip is the sore loser.
@@TornaitSuperBird yeah that's what I said? High-strung is kind of synonymous with paranoia.
*Edit* while by definition Paranoia and High-strung aren't 1 to 1, typically someone who is paranoid will be High-strung.
Remember Bay called movie Brawl "Devastator"!
Bold of you to assume that I remember a name from RID15
Seeing the pic reminds me… why don’t we have Energon Inferno/Roadblock from the Siege Ironhide mold?
Also, since it came up, Skyhammer seems to be a name that has yet to find a “real” owner. It just gets brought out every few years for a new guy.
And of course Energon Landmine has so replaced his original that depictions that were supposed to be G1 ended up being him.
I disagree with Overload, rid2015 gave us a Steeljaw that overshadowed his namesake but definitely not Overload
To me all of them just happen to have the same name as the originals but they'd both live in the same world, sharing names. Same goes for rotb Wheeljack, he could exist as another wheeljack.
Yeah, to me, RotB Wheeljack would _have_ to be a different character with the same name.
I think that making new (and some times better) characthers its better than comming back to really "nothing" characthers from G1
9:59 Long haul’s long lost cousin
Barricade should be the first name to come to mind for any fan.
This video reminded me that I had the cybertron landmine as a kid and one that I really loved. Wonder what happened to him.
When I say the name Scourge, I’m sure there are three different characters that can come to mind. Two of whom are connected to Unicron.
How did I know that the first one is blackout I promise I'm not a nerd lmao💀
Whenever I hear the name Overload I think of the Red Spider Construction from ROTF
he'll always be devastators pants to me
I always liked g1 crosshairs over the movie version
He got more characterisation in the cartoon than Pointblank and Sureshot.
By which I mean he got about three or four lines. 😜
"Of course, I _have_ been wrong on _one or two_ occasions..." 😏
I still only think Scattershot from G1 is the one I think of.
Lol,I call him Lander
Same. I almost forgot his American name after watching SuperGod Masterforce so many times. lol
I really hope we get a pack of then and now overload figures. The red one from Armada, and the blue one from 2015.
And G1. I've already repainted (and slightly modified) a Core Class Optimus for the role... 😉
@@Brickerbrack I guess that could work.
why did i think of universe train overload first? lol
Or the Universe redeco of Cybertron Scattorshot.
Roadblock got a new name because Grapple wasn't available for Trademark at the time.
Rotf overload definitely isn't the most famous use of the name but, thats always the bot i associate with the name
Me, knowing Overload from the scrapped ROTF designs:
Hate to be the guy… G1 Scattershot not the same as Scattorshot.
Anyone else feel like Breakdown is an example of this
Please TJ make a video about Energon cartoon names in foreign languages!

Name another franchise that reuses names for unrelated characters to the extent of Transformers
Marvel comics
@@R0-83-RT. Even still, that’s nowhere near to the extent of Transformers. Character names like Wheeljack, Laserbeak, Windcharger, Warpath, Snarl, Grimlock, Lug, Springer, Blitzwing, Demolisher, Mainframe, Smokescreen, Sideswipe, Slipstream, Jetstorm, Airrazor, Scorponok, Depth Charge, Crosshairs, Cyclonus, Knockout, Mirage, Rampage, Clampdown, all in no particular order has been reused to apply to unrelated characters, mostly to keep the name trademark active.
I think of the G1 toys and I still want updated versions... especially for Landfill and Quickmix... Override, Landmine (I want the rest of the Autobot pretenders and Submarauder too... the UT name saves to me are blasphemous because they were so off. At first I didn't like the BW reuses but with its setting in the G1 future, they seemed related. I wish that Hasbro, once they saw how popular the show and toys were, locked the names to the original characters and toys. Other franchises didn't mix and mismatch and turn characters into other characters as much as Transformers did.
Totally agree on the Targetmasters. We've had updated versions of Quake, Spinister and Needlenose, but not Landfill or Quickmix (and Scoop was years ago)...
I don't mind the mix and match names, to be honest. Humans do that all the time. 😜
was movie Crosshairs even popular?
Not the Decepticon micro master Knockout?
Who is that? Pokémon it’s Pikachu shutter of yell. It’s Jigglypuff goddamnit.
I swear I thought landfill was scoop why theyre guns so similar lol 😅
Landfill, Scoop and Quickmix each had two Targetmaster partners, one blue, one yellow. Their Decepticon counterparts had partners in black and purple.
I'm not gonna lie, I HATE movie Crosshairs. Awful character in an awful movie with a terrible design.
