I think you might be charitable to suggest that Hopkins genuinely believed in what he was doing, he seems to have made a small fortune (in those days) for his "work" . He might have just been an opportunist taking advantage of circumstances at a terrible cost to those innocent victims.

I remember learning about him. I think he was partly a misogynist as the vast number of cases were against women. I thought had a chair device for testing people in water to see if the drowned or not. Another great presentation with great illustrations. I love the earlier black ink drawings.
I believe there was many different ways it was done over the centuries.
I read in the past, that he was hanged as a witch. Your story puts a difference complexion on that. I'd forgot he was still so young when he died, he must have been very charismatic in life.
I remember seeing something on Blue Peter when I was young saying that's how he died as well, I guess the truth and fiction are often confused with him.
This did the water test for everyone! Not just for witches!
