An admittedly rare example of a film that really does suffer from having the end titles cropped off. SPOILER ALERT! As Sarah's hysterical screams of horror and madness are heard over the contrastingly beautiful music the emotional effect is extremely powerful and is director Michael Reeves' final assault on the audience's sensibilities.
Director Michael Reeves didn’t fair too well with Vincent Price during the making of this film. Price, already a well established actor didn’t take too kindly in being told how to deliver his lines from the young, sprightly and somewhat inexperienced Reeves. Michael Reeves however was wonderful at extracting the best performances from his actors, and had he lived longer than his tragically short 25 years, he likely would’ve gone on to bigger and more interesting things. This film is his masterpiece. Vincent Price did write to Reeves after the film was released, finally praising the film, and then thanking him for pushing him to the limits of his powers as an actor. Price as usual is brilliant as the cruel witchfinder Matthew Hopkins. Ian Ogilvy is suitably heroic, determined to end Hopkins’ reign of terror. Michael Reeves has woven a tapestry of such horrors, delights and colours - the result is a wonderful display piece and telling of a time when superstition, and the extremes of religion, were at the forefront of thinking.
You probably know the legendary story that Price said to Reeves "I've made 70 films. How many have YOU made?" And Reeves replied "2 good ones!" Reeves actually had Donald Pleasence in mind for Matthew Hopkins and resented having Price foisted onto him because of a production deal with American International Pictures. Today of course its impossible to imagine the film without Price, though one can only wonder what Pleasence would have brought to the part. And yes, Reeves' tragically young death did rob British cinema of what would certainly have been one of it's great directors.

It’s fair to say that Witchfinder General is probably Vincent Price’s best performance in a film. Although Reeves didn’t want him in the role and they clashed, he was able to get a performance out of Price that was incredible. Off course we all love the camp, over the top performances Price usually gave, but this was something that showed just what Price was capable off.
Agreed, Price gave a brilliant performance in a film with a brutally graphic ending. This is one of the great horror films along with another British masterpiece The Wicker Man.
Europe was under something known as christianity for centuries. A sick religious mix made up by the romans around the year 400. This sick religion was forced upon people, and the bible was forbidden in any other language than latin wich wery few understood.
It is scary... because nothing has changed a jot since this time. Only, there's no such thing as human nature. Everything, and I mean everything, is programming.
Something of a lecture, but it wasn't that bad across Britain (although bad enough that it happened at all)..... except in Essex, where Matthew Hopkins operated. Peculiar man. th-cam.com/video/1rHSu2oDZXE/w-d-xo.html

Yes, because the viewer is terrified of the innocent victim to be put to death for a crime that he/she did not commit. And watching the evil one get away with murder. Much better than the garbage that's put out today. A truly great film along with the Wicker Man.
Violent and brutal, nobody had seen anything remotely like this film in 1968. The director sadly committed suicide aged only 25. Had he lived, Mike Reeves would have gone to greater glory. Vincent Price has never been so menacing, before or since. His silky voice is so subtly threatening. Thanks for posting it.
@@jeffsmith6295 I knew a former work colleague who was on friendly terms with Reeves, and he stated that he was suffering from depression and talked of suicide on a few occasions before his premature death in 1969. Although there was no suicide note when Mike's body was found, my friend said he wasn't surprised by the news. He thought he had taken his own life. What a tragic waste.
Yes it was Rob Jones . Reeves brought out Price’s acting chops, unlike Roger Corman. Had the two made more films together, Price might have been remembered as an actor of more stature instead of a campy fixture in B movies
It’s fabulous that in every English movie Price was in they never made him talk with a British accent. All the brits were just like: yeah, he’s classy enough without it. Keep in mind, folks, that Vincent was born and raised in Missouri. Although he wasn’t raised in England, he was born into a wealthy English family that owned a candy company. His first big acting role was when he started acting with Orson Welles’s in the 30’s. Interesting start going that high up immediately! What a lucky break!
Evil in England, witches and witchcraft, low budget film rocks with Vincent Price in the lead. With the look and feel of a classic 'B' Hammer horror film, many might be turned off by Witchfinder General but they would be missing out on a great film. An achievement considering the amount of censorship & production problems it faced. The story is exciting & very well paced, Price is particularly menacing and intense in his role which makes the film enjoyable with his deadpan style. The murderous witch-hunting exploits of Matthew Hopkins who falsely claimed to have been appointed as a "Witchfinder General" by Parliament during the English Civil War to stop sorcery and witchcraft in search of men and women bearing the devil's mark. With the Witchfinder General and its dark plot and focus on cruelty and greed its sense of futility in the face of supposed encroaching evil, it offers a stark reflection of society that has shunned the church and it's conventions with mass hysteria that Mathew Hopkins takes complete advantage of and you have a genuine, timeless cult classic. In real life his father, James Hopkins, was a Puritan clergyman. Many claim he was a lawyer and appointed by parliament, no facts to back up any of this except to charge huge fees for his services to weed out and find witches and rid England of witchcraft. Hopkins was supposedly able to ‘prove’ that innocent men and women were agents of Satan, Hopkins began to prosper. He had 19 women hanged at Chelmsford in a single day. Moving northwards, Hopkins was paid £6 by the people of Aldeburgh in Suffolk for ridding the town of witches, while in Norfolk, at Kings Lynn, he took £15 for his services and £23 from the grateful townsfolk of Stowmarket. The most famous and infamous test of discovering a witch was ‘swimming’. The suspect’s limbs would be bound together and they would be lowered into water by ropes. If they sank and drowned, they were innocent and in heaven; if they floated, they would be tried as a witch. Hopkins was responsible for over 200 executions of innocent English citizens all accused of witchcraft. This film documents an interesting historical period in England when one unscrupulous conman is able to take control of various villages and towns for his own gain to rid them of witchcraft and evil. Although the Witchfinder General lacks the flare of a high budget film, shot on location in the English countryside, I enjoyed the film and would recommend it.
Are you telling me that one man was responsible for over 200 people's deaths. By going around the countryside and accusing people of being witches!? Damn, that's wild!
I enjoyed this much more than I expected to. The cinematography was impressive. the horse chase scene was really well filmed (and delighted with how beautifully Ian Oglivy and the baddie rode). Vincent Price adds proper gravitas and villainy. Excellent use of outdoor locations and historic buildings. Some fine interior shots at the end. The whole witch stabbing, drowning, hanging and burning was manic and fun.
Witch finders are still with us it's just that their costumes have changed, life today is cheaper than it was back in the times of Matthew Hopkins, the sickness remains.
Of course a lot changed. Romans hid the gospels original texts from all nations they controlled. For over 1200 years the Romans duped people. Rome kept the entire Bible in Latin. Read the promises of Jesus in Matthew 5. Very few people were educated to even read, let alone understand Latin. The priests were usually political pawns who served their money masters. There is no commandment to go to war against any person or nation. That is men talking Earth politics. The gospels of Jesus abhor the taking of life. Jesus only ever heals those who are demon possessed and physically sick. Martin Luther changed that situation with the Reformation. He started to translate to languages men could read. That started the revival of true Christianity that had been hijacked by Rome in the 4th century. Christianity has only ever been based on the promises of Jesus in Matthew 5. English Standard Version The Sermon on the Mount 5 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. The Beatitudes 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons[a] of God. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Salt and Light 13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[b] they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Really effective horror film, the 1600s setting give it a horrible realism, the villain is completely evil and the violence still shocks over 50 years later.
Hilary Dwyer who played 'the girl' in this movie died a few weeks ago, a victim of covid19. This is a toned down version of a true story which took place in rural England. In reality Mathew Hopkins reign of terror lasted less than two years after which he was forced to stop his rampage through the countryside and he was very lucky escape with his life. But his look didn't last and less than a year later he died of what is thought to be consumption. This is considered to be one of the best British horror movies ever made and as most people will know, it' director Michael Reeves died by suicide just after the shooting was completed while in his mid 20s. For people interested in movie trivia, right at the start of the movie where the woman is being hanged and Hopkins is sitting on his horse watching, a telephone pole with wires can plainly be seen in the background.
Fantastic film, shocking. I guess Michael Reeves didn't have the foresight to imagine the TH-cam generation studying every frame of the movie for mistakes
Victim of a huge lie you mean, victim of the jab or just ill but nothing to do with the covid have you not been doing real research or do you just blindly believe MSN etc
As a metal detectorist I often find coins, relics, buckles and buttons from these past times of c1640, I often do wonder who owned my finds once upon, never a shortage of musket balls too and I always know where they came from! The barrel of a musket gun.
I feel sorry for any or all of that died during his reign and beyond. I firmly believe that those who were murdered in all times of witches were innocent.
Can I say I love the husband in this movie? He risks everything to see his beloved safe. Also, he knew she willingly let herself be violated to save her uncle while under duress. He could have easily left her or killed her on the spot out of sheer toxic masculinity. But he didn't treat her as property. He didn't even admonish, cast her aside, or get angry at her. Instead, he marries her on the spot to ensure his fidelity and protection and sees to it that she is taken care of to the best of his ability. It is super radical at a time period when a woman was basically considered property.
That's more historically accurate than you think though. People throughout history have generally placed an emphasis on staying clean and having clean clothes.
some great location shots from here in Suffolk. Lavenham town square, (Burning scene), Kentwell Hall (Ducking scene), Dunwich beach, Orford Castle (finale) and scene where walking up past Orford Castle's Keep
I love the way this film shows the true horror of fanatical people who 'know' they are doing right, and don't let compassion, emotions and all that make us human get in their way and their agenda. The Parliamentarians may have won outright, had they not been fanatical Protestants that went round banning everything, even including Christmas.Fanaticists,'idealists' and all those trying to force their opinions onto others, should remember that even though the old regime may be horrific,it's a million times better than the fascistic, riding over human rights 'idealism' that they're trying to force in it's place.Sounds very similar to what certain people are trying to do today, but, thankfully, people are becoming wise to it.Being forewarned is as good as being forearmed,as the old saying goes.🇬🇧❤️❤️❤️🐊🐊🐊
I actually saw this version back in the late sixties in west Texas. It was black and white. watched it again when NetFlix had it for like three months. For the most part, it is a romantic tale. Love and honor, though, I think honor is the thing in this flix. His honor is besmirched by his love use of her body to save her Uncle. At the end, his honor was denied by his friend, who put the Witch finder out of his misery. Just a thought.
it ends without a final scene. this movie is empty, bad written, boring, and pointless. The inquisition parts aren't even that great. bad movie/10, wouldn't suggest it to friends
@@TheLazyOne00 you are being a little too harsh. The movie isn't bad, but I did hate it. Vincent hated it too, apparently. This sort of stuff actually went on. It's enforcing religious obedience by terror. Not unlike the Taliban or ISIS do today. All part of the growing pains of becoming a modern secular society. Sadly!
Sirhandsome. the principle is the same, authority's governing by terror. 'Me too'? Yep, a Marxist witch hunt. 'Momentum'? Thirties Nazi brown shirts. Same thing only Marxist.
Ahhh yes, modern secular societies like Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, Red China and North Korea. Something I read once, "Those who are certain of anything whether, science, or religion, certain in their own self righteousness make up the ranks of Eugenics and ISIS."
This is genuinely upsetting. And even worse to think this is actually what went on. I’ve seen what whispers and quiet comments can do in modern day. I’ve watched whispers from one girl pass around the room while the victim had no idea. I watched as the other women glanced at the male victim and whispered the secret on to others. Then men hear it and glance at him too, their knuckles white from clenching their fists.
Forward the clock and this will probably come full circle in the middle 2000's with the 'new religion of p3ac*'. Hunting heretics and 'witches' will be big business like it was before. God help us .....

So many innocent people died because other people thought they were casting spells and practicing witch craft. The people that executed the accused were the ones that were witches !
Linda Mulholland generally speaking the accuser was a neighbour who saw an opportunity to seize property on the cheap. There is also clear evidence that the motive was sexual, the humiliation inflicted upon women ensured their compliance.

Agreed, Price gave a brilliant performance in a film with a brutally graphic ending. This is one of the great horror films along with another British masterpiece The Wicker Man.
Price was neither campy nor over the top in this flick. He was just plain terrifying

This is truly SCARY...because it is TRUE. Great insight into Human Nature.

Violent and brutal, nobody had seen anything remotely like this film in 1968.
The director sadly committed suicide aged only 25. Had he lived, Mike Reeves would
have gone to greater glory.
Vincent Price has never been so menacing, before or since. His silky voice is so subtly threatening.

Yes it was Rob Jones . Reeves brought out Price’s acting chops, unlike Roger Corman. Had the two made more films together, Price might have been remembered as an actor of more stature instead of a campy fixture in B movies

Vincent never quite recovered his status after "Witchfinder General."
Michael Reeves was a schoolmate of Ian Ogilvy at Eton
Vincent was a great actor . This and the mask of the red death i loved when growing up , alongside Christopher Lee , Peter Cushing and Boris Carloff .
Mesmering piece of art with plenty of cruel scenes. Might be Vincent Price's best one!
This movie was not made by Vincent Price, it was made by Michael Reeves. Price is only an actor in this.
It's nothing really like the look of an early Hammer film which were ge really shot on a sound stage and had pretty static cinematography.
This is still very violent. Imagine seeing those opening credits in the late 60's.

Ah how I miss these good old times, nothing but misery today.
