What a difference a score makes! Zack Snyder's Justice League AKA The Snyder Cut is finally here! There are a lot of opinions going around about the film right now. We're going to look at differences between Danny Elfman's score for the 2017 Theatrical Cut and the far superior Junkie XL score for The Snyder Cut.

I freaking cheered when it played. Last time I remembered it playing, was when Supes learned to fly in MoS, which of course showed the potential of what Superman could become. Then it played when he fights Steppenwolf (if it played in BvS, I missed it), and it shows that potential has been reached

The idea that Josstice League score can be dropped on Tom & Jerry perfectly sums it up. The score felt so safe stock music that would fit anywhere. You could drop the score on random action movie and it'll work. Junkie XL score on the other hand tells a story on its own.
If cinema is about "show - don't tell" Junkie XL score helps a lot with accomplishing that. You don't need the words. In fact half the scenes in Zack Snyder's Justice League would work well if dialog was music but music was kept there.

One thing I really loved was the coda to Hans Zimmer’s Superman theme. When Superman catches Steppenwolf’s axe as he’s trying to kill Cyborg, the theme plays big and powerfully over all the brass, whereas before it was only ever played on a piano or in muted tones. The big brass blast makes you feel like finally, after 3 movies, a death, a rebirth, and the assembling of heroes, THE Superman has arrived.

The best description I've heard for DC vs Marvel's different takes on superheroes is that in Marvel superheroes = rock stars where as in DC superheroes = gods. In Zack's DC films he is emphasizing the god's amongst men idea and the music mirrors that. The overused Wonder Women music sounds like an ancient religious chant. Same can be said with the song that the villagers sing as Aquaman swims away in the beginning. Those girls are singing a hymn to the god that protects there village and brings them food.

Now that I rewatched the scene of Wonder Woman over the statue, in the Josstice League -I can´t unsee how the song doesn´t fit with the expression in Diana´s face, Yes she is a godess and a warrior, but she fears for the hostages at the same time. Or maybe this is suppose to be the first time Diana comes back to the world (after walking away from mankind 100 years ago, according to BvS). In Junkie XL's defense, although he does have his new Amazon chant for Wonder Woman, he still brings back her electric cello theme from Batman V Superman and Wonder Woman (2017). Three times (twice in the hostage rescue scene in London, once more in the tunnel fight against Steppenwolf). Danny Elfman only used it maybe twice, and he swapped out the electric cello for a full orchestra. Because reasons.

I disagree with the wonder woman introduction.
Saving her theme when she bursts in to kick ass has way more impact. The orchestral singing in her intro is great as it builds her up. Like "here's our saviour for this moment about to come". So yeah, not using the wonder woman theme until she starts kicking ass was the right call IMO.

I loved the WW theme because the vocals connected her theme with the theme for the Amazons. It reminds you where she comes from. I do agree it was a bit overused and the memes are funny, but I don't think it ruins the experience.
I think one thing that Junkie XL's score has over Elfman's is the connective tissue. There is a recurring theme (the main JL theme) that is used in variations for different moods. This brings the whole film together in a way. You can even hear it when the Amazons are stealing the motherbox and are about to get away. I interpret it as a theme for the Age of Heroes. Any teamwork we see is accompanied by this theme. I believe it's called The Crew at War Power.
Also...Junkie XL....thank you SO MUCH for the Flash's theme that creeps in when he saves the world. That guitar paired with the drums is just so GOOD.

The music by Junkie XL (other than WW) fit the film like a glove. It was made richer for it. One such scene that you pointed out was the terrorist attack near the beginning. Elfman's version reminded me a lot of a villains theme in the 1970's Superman films. More whimsical, cartoonish, and light-hearted. Junkie XL's take was much more on point for the situation.

    • @gonzacollao
      @gonzacollao 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

There's a very simple reason behind that; Junkie XL helped shape this universe from the very start. He co-wrote the score for Man Of Steel with Hans Zimmer, and did the same with BvS. The MOS score is just as important to these films as any character to the stories, the percussion, the beautiful piano melody, the powerful "Flight" theme, they are all connected; take that score away, you'll end up with an incoherent film. Elfman slapped old themes that belonged to other versions of the characters on top of these versions that already had their respective themes. Elfman helped butchering this movie, he played a key role in the disaster that was the awful 2017 cut.

Wonder Woman's music is the most powerful in the movie and it plays as its the music of the Amazon's. Wonder Woman in this movie is representing her people, because unlike in the original fight with Darkseid, they can't be there to fight alongside her. That is why it's a new theme, for her people and family, not just her. Playing during Women Woman on top of Justice made the scene more serious and emotional. Wonder Woman is worried over the hostages, rather than oh time for my known theme music to play as it's my debut. It isn't about Wonder Woman.
As for Aquaman's breaking the bottle music, he's fighting his inner demons. Him drinking whiskey and smashing it to swim off isn't meant to be badass, it's meant to be him trying to numb himself and not care about anything else (thus the king of the seas not giving a crap about broken glass in the sea). Danny's take on that scene completely voided any sort of inner turmoil.
Danny's score felt like background music and at times out of place, whereas Junkie XL's contributed to the atmosphere, emotions, and character development.

For me, the wonder woman theme was great, but used WAY too much.
The scene where flash knocks WW’s sword into her hand stood out more in Elfman’s version, and I’m glad it did cause it was a cool moment. In Snyder’s, the moment is just as cool as everything else so it doesn’t stand out nearly as much.
And the SUPERMAN THEEEEEME. The MOS soundtrack is my favorite of all time so hearing it come back was amazing. I had no idea it could make such a difference in terms of story. It wasn’t just Superman showing up, it was OUR Superman showing up. Every time I hear it a smile comes to my face.

Danny Elfman: Circus music, flamboyant style that would be perfect for a Tim Burton Batman movie.
Tom Holkenborg/Junkie XL: serious drama and thriller music inspired by Hans Zimmer´s music in the Nolan (Batman) trilogy and in MoS and BvS.
WB executives: watching the Snyder cut before the theatrical release of Justice League in 2017: You know what would be great? To let Danny Elfman compose the music instead!
    The rest is history

I'm not familiar with the process here but I believe before the score is made, the director would have discussed each scene with the one doing the score, so intent of the scene would have been explained. Zack was creating an epic movie and he would have discussed that with junkie xl. Whedon was just, whatever, the executives want their bonuses and Elfman was talented enough to pull it through.

I love Danny scores from previous films. The problem I have is the cognitive dissonance caused by using 30 plus year old themes for certain characters. In conjunction, the Amazon theme by Tom is more appropriate for Diana's appearances. I say this because the Wonder Woman theme is a combat theme, not a character theme(before people come at me, the use in BvS was to underscore how Diana isn't the kind of woman Bruce knows)

There's an entire discussion to be had about the way these two films use leitmotifs.
Elfman aggressively avoids using the leitmotifs established in this film series (with the exception of Wonder Woman for some reason), and instead opts to use legacy themes that have no ties to these iterations of these characters.
Junkie XL on the other hand extensively uses the leitmotifs and themes established in prior films of this series, even writing new ones for characters like Batman who didn't have a theme of their own yet (you can hear his theme played by the horns at about 3:01). Of course, Junkie XL does overdo it at times, mostly with the Wonder Woman theme. He's got a few videos on his TH-cam channel where he dives deep into his score for this movie. So for anybody remotely curious about his music in this movie, I'd highly recommend taking a look at that. It's a very interesting peek behind the curtains. The dude literally pulls up the project files and walks you through how he created certain themes.

Danny Elfman's score is very generic and doesn't convey any particular emotion. It's just a generic, by the numbers action movie score. Junkie XL's score builds momentum and ends up filling fuller than the Elfman's bombastic purée thanks to better instrumentation and more layers of sound.

  • @opgam3r482

Tom Holkenborg (JunkieXL) has a recurring theme that's always in the DNA of the score which i love... and ramps up and down accordingly (like Cyborgs) everything is organic... As far as Wonder Woman's yea.. I didn't notice it too bad until it was brought up, but there could have been some other chords from that chello played to hint the full blown WW track... without ramping it all the way up... But Junkie XL all the way imo... Not to mention he had to make a huge part of this score over again... On the Vodka Stream he stated once he left, he used some of what was going to be on Zack's version elsewhere etc... so he went and rescored a lot.
(I do wish some of those Trailer 1 and 2 composers get their time to shine if we get more... strait chills... "Fragments" and "Ryokuzen" or however the song is spelt lol... absolute fire.

I felt the wailing vocals for Wonder Woman’s theme worked phenomenally during the bank heist scene, during the bit where the Amazons prepare to fire the sacred arrow, and during the part where Wonder Woman decapitates Steppenwolf.
For the rest of the scenes with them, it did feel repetitive. So in my opinion, they worked best during scenes that were absolutely poignant and had heavy meanings to the overall plot and character developments.

I just don't understand what problem some people seem to have with the music Junkie XL uses in establishing shots of Wonder Woman. First off: it's not her "new theme". Her theme is still the Hans Zimmer theme from 'Batman v Superman', and that kicks in the moment Wonder Woman actually goes into action - like when she starts whaling on the terrorists or charges into battle against Steppenwolf. The music for the establishing shots - that Middle-Eastern style vocalizing - says who she is: it references her mythical and mystical roots. It sounds like the muezzin "call to prayer" you hear every day in Muslim countries - like Turkey, which some legends say is where the Amazons come from (Themyscira was supposedly a city on the banks of the Thermodon river in Anatolia). You'll notice Junkie XL uses the same music in establishing shots of Themyscira. I feel as if every element of the music in the Snyder cut has both meaning and purpose, and that's one of the main reasons why I think it's far superior to Danny Elfman's score for the Whedon film. Elfman's done a lot of great work in the past, but his score for the Whedon 'Justice League' felt rushed, too lightweight and completely out of place.

  • @SCharlesDennicon

    Excellent video.
It pains me to say that as a 80's kid, but Junkie XL's versino BURIES Elfman's. Plain and simple. Elfman's is awfully generic, it's Elfman doing Elfman. Junkie XL's has soul. It's a tank with a soul.
As soon as I heard what Junkie XL's composed for the (failed) heist scene, at the beginning, I knew it was gonna be much, MUCH better. It was. Like the Snyder cut.

I would argue there's literally ZERO argument that the Aquaman score in Joss's JL is even close to as good. It gives us NOTHING about the character's emotional state of mind, other than the idea that he's at best a badass, and at worst, a dick who just doesn't care about anyone but himself. His entire arc for the Snyder Cut really DOES set up the Aquaman movie WAY better than the practically non-existent arc in Joss's cut. I mean, it tells us EVERYTHING we need to know. That Aquaman is not just a badass with no depth.
That he's actually a wounded man, hurt by his mother's death, who feels lost, because he doesn't fit in on the surface, but he doesn't want to be King or to go back to the sea. It's appropriately somber and gets across very well that Aquaman is MEANT to be king, but that he's not ready yet. That he resents Atlantis for taking his mother away from him. In the original scene, you get none of this. Just a rock song to make it seem badass and cool, like Aquaman is an angry dude, at best, and that's it.
Junkie XL gets this character's story. And his version works. Neither is an actual theme for the character though, and it's not like the Wonderwoman theme, Batman, or Superman themes. Which are all really memorable, and great. Junkie XL proved himself to be a great composer when he worked with Hanz Zimmer on BvS, and I'm glad he finally got a chance to show he's a great composer when he's doing it alone.

@MythMachine One difference I thought was incredibly smart, was JunkieXL's kind of "machine pop" if that's a thing, when Bruce goes to Barry's hideout... It puts you in the quirky space Barry is during "Stop right there... I'm in..." and "Can I keep this?" Although I like Ezra as the Flash, I feel some of his delivery is forced or the writing is... Either way, I felt that specific scene just with the change of music totally makes it now work...
More so, making future scene's w/ Barry less cringe, because we see him for example, at the mercy of Superman about to fry him at Hero's Park, or when Victor basically advises Barry to get serious "Barry!" during the "With the power of love" line while planning the assault.
So we're brought more into the socially awkwardness of Barry, *slowly... given understanding before revealing his nature. Which feels more natural... One thing I still can't stand is when he meets Alfred lol... That look, i dunno... It puts a smile on my face, but only because he looks so goofy lol...
There needs to be some Costume reworking imo... But I'm all in #RestoreTheSnyderVerse It'd be nice not to have to tweet and petition to get each installment... and have them be just as high caliber as MoS or BvS (love them or hate them) in terms of flow and the overall Solid nature they're presented...
