For those wondering about the Hot Dog Truck - it's an easter egg put in by the VFX company that worked on the Smallville fight sequence (MPC), and has since showed up in a bunch of other movies that they worked on (including other Zack Snyder movies). I think it's somewhere in the debris of the Doomsday fight in BvS, and when I was working on Justice League we were going to put it on top of one of the Russian buildings, but the shot that featured it was cut from the theatrical version and I don't know if it was re-added for ZSJL (since the studio shut down at the end of 2019).
And here I was about to make a joke about how “That's Barry come back from the future, having lost his powers through wibbly wobbly timey wimey something or other” but the truth's way better.
I was at the VFX studio that did all the Russia stuff - really glad the shots we were working on before the reshoots got to see the light of day with the Snyder Cut.

@@Lidoe Snyder did showcase flashbacks when Superman mentioned Martha to Batman, it showed Batman having Traumatic Flashbacks back to the night his parents died with it ending on Thomas saying "Martha" with his Dying breath. Afterwards Batman asked Superman why he said Martha. You have to remember even though he was only 8 years old Btaman always blames himself for the death of his parents so it is very PTSD inducing for him. Martha. Ugh, I’ve tried to explain this so many times to people, and all anyone ever says is “batman would NEVER do that, and if you think he would, you don’t understand the character” completely forgetting all the times batman has crossed the line. I mean ffs theres an entire DC multiverse collection of batmen that went to far and destroyed the universe they’re from. Batman regularly crosses the line but people think Batman is infallible and don’t believe the plot point.
The hotdog truck is clearly being driven by the Condiment King. He lived in Smallville during the Kryptonian invasion and narrowly escaped the destruction. He fled to Central City, where his hot dog cart was involved in an automobile accident and he was consequentially struck by lightning. This event sent him into another dimension, in which he became a high-level enforcer in Gotham's mob and a fearsome kingpin in the drug trade. From then on he would do classic Condiment King gags, like constantly spouting off character-appropriate puns such as, "My dogs are hungry!!!" He amassed quite a bit of wealth and outlasted many of his organized criminal contemporaries, until The Joker made all his money flamin' hot and then fed him to his own dogs. All in all, he actually had a pretty good run as a mid-card member of the rouge's gallery, and across two different cinematic franchises (the first being his reign as a villain, and the latter chronologically being his traumatic origin story). This is especially remarkable considering how The Condiment King is typically played as a punchline villain. It just goes to show that, while some older DC media could be considered corny, even a foil like the Condiment King can ketchup with the times. He's the sour cream of the kraut, he's nacho cheesiest nemesis. He will hunt you with honey and humble you with hummus, so you peanut butter beware the Condiment King. These cinematic appearances have marmalade the groundwork to prove he can cut the mustard. The Condiment King would relish the opportunity to get more screentime for himself and his butler, Alfredo. He's full of pesto and vinegar, just think of all the dastardly things he could do. He could put a damsel in distress by tying her up and suspending her over a vat of olive oyl. He could cripple the Navy by turning the oceans to gravy. He could salt Poison Ivy to death, or try to barbeque Au the Jus. He could be a real A1 villain, not just some soyboy. I'm just saying, his presence in the DCEU was confirmed alongside a Batman that straight up murders people, the first Condiment King solo movie should be as gritty as fucking toothpaste. Miso sorry.

Well he does use symbolism in there and if you can't help it then go cry to someone who cares. He basically was represented as him in Snyder's movies. Jor-EL said he'll be a god to them. Symbolism.
Good analysis. Also the comparison of the "blind man healed" for Bruce Wayne/Batman is pretty apt. I didn't notice this until rewatching the Ultimate Edition of BvS, before watching this video, but if you watch the final confrontation we know Batman in his armor has the 'white eyes', very comic accurate but also looking unnatural as a demon or a "blind" person. Later in the fight Superman rips part of his mask and half of Bruce's face gets exposed. Here is where things get more interesting. If you look closely once they are at the bottom of the building, when Superman is beaten and Batman is about to drag him, Bruce's eyes are glowing. He doesn't look like a human- he looks more like an animal when shot with a night vision goggle in deep dark. Moreso now he looks demonic even without the mask on or, to the example earlier, he looks like a blind man. When he grabs the spear the glow of the kryptonite accentuates this to the point where he is stepping on Superman's neck and is about to kill him. But as Superman begs for Martha's life this milky glow starts to disappear and as Bruce becomes confused about him calling this name out, and starting to realize Clark's humanity, his eyes start to look human again (the blind finally sees). It is all done very subtly and gradually so it looks right in context of the light sources and circumstances in that environment, never looking out of place, but it is another example of how careful Snyder was about telling the story as much visually as he was through dialogue.
Goddamn, you've finally found the words I needed to put those 'elemental' motifs into tangible reasons for why these films spoke so much to me. Those moments of crystalline, pure, baptism-like water accompanied by that ethereal Has Zimmer ambience has always, for me, represented Earth and Superman's connection with it. Not to mention those moments of him bathing in the sun's rays, or drifting in space above the globe. Just magical.
I love that point about the 4th point of a films birth being the audience perception, the dceu films have meant so much to me and I know my love is deeply subjective. What movies become to us are as important as what they were in their genesis.

So amazing to see many others who were touched by these works of art as I was. I just knew there was something to them that separated them from the pack. Zack was telling a story about the characters themselves in our pop culture history. He was exploring what role they have in our culture as icons themselves. I just watched M.O.S. again for the first time in a while a week ago and I forgot how beautifully shot it was. BvS (the director’s cut especially) is very under appreciated. Both movies are shot with such grace that you feel like you’re watching a comic book come to life where I can’t say that necessarily for the other company as far as how it looks. Very good video. Hopefully we see more Snyder movies in the DCEU.
I’m going to give them all a rewatch again soon seeing as how I’m likely on quarantine. When ‘Man of Steel’ first came out, an ex-girlfriend of mine kept saying “It’s like ‘The Dark Knight’ and you love that, so why don’t you like this?” I’ve seen it 3 times so far and just can’t get over how uninteresting I find this take on Superman.
@@lexio9913 I thought it was very good. Obviously it didn’t need all the scenes that made it 4 hours but all in all it was the movie I had hoped to see. There are parts of Snyder’s vision that I wished he had done a different take but all in all I’ve enjoyed his movies in the DCEU.
@@christianc.christian5025, When I first saw it I was thought it was mostly good but I can’t say I was initially blown away. I enjoyed Cavill and I loved his suit. I thought it was darker then Superman needs to be. However, as I’ve seen his character grow you understand just how isolated he felt even with all his gifts. To regular people seeing his powers makes Superman godlike. To Clark it was a reminder that even though he looks “human” he’s not. He meets Lois and finds out about who he is and he changes. I hope that we see Cavill again before they blow it all up again.
It for sure aged really damn well. Heck, even the visual presentation holds up better than most of the CG-heavy blockbusters that came out around that time.

The black suit is because in the comics it absorbs sun light faster so that he can heal to full strength faster since he came back from the dead . nothin to do with going evil .
Yeah, but in BvS they showed Clark regenerate from being basically a skeleton in the _blue_ suit. They'd already showed him coming back from something that _looked worse_ in the non-solar suit, considering at that point he was basically dead, whereas in JL he comes out of the pool fully capable of beating up the entire team. That said, even if they didn't mangle the textual importance of the black suit just to reference DKR in the previous movie, it could _still_ have multiple meanings. It could textually be a "Absorb more sunlight" option, but _subtextually_ represent Superman going darker.

No comicbook movies have ever been dissected like Zack Snyder's films. Yet everyone says Zack Snyder is only style over substance. This video proves that Zack not only understands the characters better than others want to give him credit but proves that the audience only sees these characters on a superficial level because Zack films are loaded with subtext and mythology. Zack really was the best thing for DC and was a head of his time.

It’s weird to me for the Snyder movies to get so much hate. I absolutely loved man of steel and saw the extended cut of bvs, and loved it too. I didn’t get what the problem was with either of the movies. And then… Justice League. Man that movie was a mess. I recently finally saw the Snyder cut and once again, loved it. I’d be up for more ‘snyderverse’ movies but that ship has sailed, apart from maybe the Flash movie? While I loved The Batman, I’m kinda bummed we Never got the Affleck movie.

He’s a Superman so when he’s faced with a tough choice like killing the last of his kind or saving people he chooses option c because he’s Superman. Batman is exactly like miller’s Batman minus any of the history, nuance and perspective. There’s nothing unfortunately more comic accurate these days than a Batman and Superman who hate each other for no fucking reason even though they are best friends and the reason them fighting was such a big thing in DKR is because they were friends, best friends and it’s tragic their lives have diverged in such a way that it’s come down to that showdown. Also which comic was it where Batman just murdered everyone with very little resolution to him not doing that anymore? I mean it’s taken until The Batman where a Batman doesn’t murder the villain at the end so not sure that’s very comic accurate After that it’s also not a universe that could be built like the comics especially with what’s established and what’s wanted to be done. Black Adam and Shazam don’t work in a world where man of steel exists, they work in a world where Superman does but Papa Kent wouldn’t have jumped in a tornado if he remembered that old team of superhero’s who used to watch on the news as a young man. I never knew it was Superman losing touch with his humanity after the resurrection that caused him to choose the black suit. I just thought it was a reference to the comics so this makes it so much more interesting. Also that point about Batman being akin to the blind Roman soldier is pretty interesting. As an atheist, I always loved the religious subtext used throughout these films.
Outside of Batman v superman I have actually enjoyed most of his work like his version of the justice league even though it would probably needed to be split in half if he never got fired
People don’t like the snyderverse because they compare it to the original DC characters and stories which in that case, I can understand why it’s hated. The snyderverse wasn’t the best thing to start off DCs first ever cinematic universe with. However, if you look at it as it’s own thing without comparing it to DCs original content, the snyderverse is one of the best sagas to ever exist in my opinion

Well DC has so many different versions of the same characters because so many different people has written them over the years, so I don't really agree with your take.
I think DCEU started with Snyderverse or MoS because of Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy that possibly grounded a sense of realism in those movies, which somewhat perpetuate people to assume DC to be that way during that time. We just had Dark Knight Rises in 2012, and MoS a year later. I'd say MoS seemed perfect to kickstart the DCEU. Talk about characters development, I'd also believe that Superman from MoS would eventually grow to become the one that people are familiar with. Perhaps it'd make sense to display the flaws of a perpetual flawless character (in terms of strengths) and make him eventually overcomes them than introducing him as an all-rounded individual that people contstantly label him as 'boy scout'.
Nah- you must have never read John Bryne’s “Man Of Steel” it’s also a movie,not a comic book,which is a totally different medium. Marvel takes more liberties in their movies and NO ONE bats an eye.

@@subtleb1138 That's because it wasn't Superman yet. It was Clark Kent in a cape. Then, in BvS (Snyder Cut) Kent struggled between being hated as a Kryptonian or being worshipped as a god. He figured it out at the end when he CHOSE to be Superman, and especially after being brought back in ZSJL. You saw the very same story in Reeves' The Batman. Was Wayne the same in the end as he began? Or did Batman develop and emerge? Why is it that Superman fans can argue that his heart is what makes Superman, yet in Snyder's development arc the cape alone was supposed to do it? I know, because with Donner, the cape alone did it. You Superman fans missed the entire point, which is why you cheated yourself out of this awesome Superman story.

20:00 I don't believe that the black suit is thematically tied to Superman losing his human side because Snyder has said in an interview that the black suit is symbolic of humanity by referencing Robert Bly's book "The Red, White and Black."
That's definitely true, though in another interview from around the same time, he tied the black suit more directly to Krypton - specifically in contrast to the blue suit representing his place on earth. @@empirewreckers I do remember reading that interview, so perhaps "the black of humanity" is less literal about being human and more about being an individual since that interview regarding the black suit tying back to Krypton feels like Clark accepting who he is. I also find it interesting that Superman dons the red and blue after he had his humanity stripped away by Darkseid. What an interesting discussion.

the water and fire symbolism reminded me of RRR that i watched in theatre recently. It was first time symbolism was made so apparent in every shot of the movie and it was gorgeous to look at.

I've watched several video essays on Zach Snyder's Trilogy/His version of Superman, however this is the first time I've had someone share the water&fire motif. Learning more about MOS over time has only intensified my love for the film, but thanks to you this new perspective just makes the film that much more impressive. What I noticed from each of these movies is that while Zack Snyder can put together a scene, he can't stitch scenes together into something greater than the individual pieces. His scenes don't build on each other. They don't end by setting up the next scene, which is vital for creating a sense of flow and building momentum. Every scene just stands by itself, disconnected from what has come immediately prior or what follows it. This is why the films often feel exhausting to watch.
it's opposite actually, difference is he don't satisfy regular viewers inside rules and borders of cinema we accustomed to, instead he makes movies closer to real life than actual movies despite using fantastical and mythological elements. Like Aristotle said: Probable impossibilities are to be preferred to improbable possibilities. But people nowadays didn't watch movies for thinking or philosophy, they want entertainment.
To me man of steel is a truly beautiful else worlds story, not the best idea to try build a universe around it but in its own it’s truly brilliant a masterpiece stand alone

It's all very interesting but the bottom line is , did Man of Steel connect w/ audiences? I'd say solidly NO. It wasn't a complete failure but Snyder's take on the legacy DC characters was very dark, . . especially Superman. Unlike the original film, this Superman movie came & went and had been forgotten.

Maybe this is an irrelevant detail, but in Christian iconography, "red" and "blue" take on archetypal motifs for Heaven and Earth, which is why both Mary and Jesus are depicted in those colors but in reverse pattern (Earth elevated to Heaven in the case of the Virgin Mother, Heaven descending to Earth in the case of the Christ). And that's without even touching the heavily loaded theological symbolism behind both fire (Pentecost, Hell, etc) and water (Baptism, Flood, etc)... Just thought that was an interesting correspondence between religio-mythic imagery and Snyder's artistic pallet.

Because of other thing such as pacing, writing directing. But that just me.in order to me to appreciate this kind of movies I need to feel something the characters or the stakes in it. Plot doesn't equate a story. Characters, themes, 'symbolism' and 'imagery' especially can inform a story. Plot is like a road map an A to B , we're going to go here and then there for the characters. Even if you have a great Plot that alone does not make a great film unless you have characters a story or themes and imagery that is packed with information that is conveyed cinematically. Most Scorsese films don't have plots or Tarantino movies. Most people remember movies, films because of the characters and subconsciously or unconsciously the themes. It's the characters, story and overall cinematic experience that people remember. If you want plot you could just read a short story. LA Confidential preserves the story and characters rather than the plot. Characters that drive the plot are so much more interesting than characters that are subservient to the plot and can't break free of it
@@prime20687 Plot and story are two different things - but that doesn't mean that you can just ignore plot. Suspension of disbelief is basic. If people check out of your movie because it makes no sense... the story and theme can be fantastic, it won't matter. Sure, if you want to make an experimental film, or a music video with no plot - go for it. But, Tarantino films, for example, all have a plot. Of course characters drive the plot, but they can just as easily behave in unrealistic ways for story purposes. People usually don't remember plot details years later, but they sure as hell notice it during the film.
@Roper122 but he buries the plot so it doesn't call attention to itself and the plot is minimal. Inglorious Basterds is one of his first movies where the plot is more obvious in terms of it's set up. Yeah of course people notice the plot while they're watching a film but it isn't something they generally recall back as to why a good or great film is a good or great film. Glass Onion has a really dense plot so what. Reservoir Dogs has a minimalist plot it's about the characters. Recently the Banshees of Inisherin you're literally told almost straight away the plot so you can just spend time with the characters. Plot isn't always the most important thing. In a mystery or a film noir a labyrinthine plot can be fun to follow but if you haven't got interesting or compelling characters who cares

For those wondering about the Hot Dog Truck - it's an easter egg put in by the VFX company that worked on the Smallville fight sequence (MPC), and has since showed up in a bunch of other movies that they worked on (including other Zack Snyder movies). I think it's somewhere in the debris of the Doomsday fight in BvS, and when I was working on Justice League we were going to put it on top of one of the Russian buildings, but the shot that featured it was cut from the theatrical version and I don't know if it was re-added for ZSJL (since the studio shut down at the end of 2019).

Afterwards Batman asked Superman why he said Martha. You have to remember even though he was only 8 years old Btaman always blames himself for the death of his parents so it is very PTSD inducing for him.

Ugh, I’ve tried to explain this so many times to people, and all anyone ever says is “batman would NEVER do that, and if you think he would, you don’t understand the character” completely forgetting all the times batman has crossed the line. I mean ffs theres an entire DC multiverse collection of batmen that went to far and destroyed the universe they’re from. Batman regularly crosses the line but people think Batman is infallible and don’t believe the plot point.
The hotdog truck is clearly being driven by the Condiment King. He lived in Smallville during the Kryptonian invasion and narrowly escaped the destruction. He fled to Central City, where his hot dog cart was involved in an automobile accident and he was consequentially struck by lightning. This event sent him into another dimension, in which he became a high-level enforcer in Gotham's mob and a fearsome kingpin in the drug trade. From then on he would do classic Condiment King gags, like constantly spouting off character-appropriate puns such as, "My dogs are hungry!!!" He amassed quite a bit of wealth and outlasted many of his organized criminal contemporaries, until The Joker made all his money flamin' hot and then fed him to his own dogs. All in all, he actually had a pretty good run as a mid-card member of the rouge's gallery, and across two different cinematic franchises (the first being his reign as a villain, and the latter chronologically being his traumatic origin story). This is especially remarkable considering how The Condiment King is typically played as a punchline villain. It just goes to show that, while some older DC media could be considered corny, even a foil like the Condiment King can ketchup with the times. He's the sour cream of the kraut, he's nacho cheesiest nemesis. He will hunt you with honey and humble you with hummus, so you peanut butter beware the Condiment King. These cinematic appearances have marmalade the groundwork to prove he can cut the mustard. The Condiment King would relish the opportunity to get more screentime for himself and his butler, Alfredo. He's full of pesto and vinegar, just think of all the dastardly things he could do. He could put a damsel in distress by tying her up and suspending her over a vat of olive oyl. He could cripple the Navy by turning the oceans to gravy. He could salt Poison Ivy to death, or try to barbeque Au the Jus. He could be a real A1 villain, not just some soyboy. I'm just saying, his presence in the DCEU was confirmed alongside a Batman that straight up murders people, the first Condiment King solo movie should be as gritty as fucking toothpaste.

Well he does use symbolism in there and if you can't help it then go cry to someone who cares. He basically was represented as him in Snyder's movies. Jor-EL said he'll be a god to them. Symbolism.
Good analysis. Also the comparison of the "blind man healed" for Bruce Wayne/Batman is pretty apt. I didn't notice this until rewatching the Ultimate Edition of BvS, before watching this video, but if you watch the final confrontation we know Batman in his armor has the 'white eyes', very comic accurate but also looking unnatural as a demon or a "blind" person. Later in the fight Superman rips part of his mask and half of Bruce's face gets exposed. Here is where things get more interesting.
If you look closely once they are at the bottom of the building, when Superman is beaten and Batman is about to drag him, Bruce's eyes are glowing. He doesn't look like a human- he looks more like an animal when shot with a night vision goggle in deep dark. Moreso now he looks demonic even without the mask on or, to the example earlier, he looks like a blind man. When he grabs the spear the glow of the kryptonite accentuates this to the point where he is stepping on Superman's neck and is about to kill him. But as Superman begs for Martha's life this milky glow starts to disappear and as Bruce becomes confused about him calling this name out, and starting to realize Clark's humanity, his eyes start to look human again (the blind finally sees).
It is all done very subtly and gradually so it looks right in context of the light sources and circumstances in that environment, never looking out of place, but it is another example of how careful Snyder was about telling the story as much visually as he was through dialogue.

Goddamn, you've finally found the words I needed to put those 'elemental' motifs into tangible reasons for why these films spoke so much to me. Those moments of crystalline, pure, baptism-like water accompanied by that ethereal Has Zimmer ambience has always, for me, represented Earth and Superman's connection with it. Not to mention those moments of him bathing in the sun's rays, or drifting in space above the globe. Just magical.

I love that point about the 4th point of a films birth being the audience perception, the dceu films have meant so much to me and I know my love is deeply subjective. What movies become to us are as important as what they were in their genesis.

Zack was telling a story about the characters themselves in our pop culture history. He was exploring what role they have in our culture as icons themselves. I just watched M.O.S. again for the first time in a while a week ago and I forgot how beautifully shot it was. BvS (the director’s cut especially) is very under appreciated. Both movies are shot with such grace that you feel like you’re watching a comic book come to life where I can’t say that necessarily for the other company as far as how it looks. Very good video. Hopefully we see more Snyder movies in the DCEU.

When ‘Man of Steel’ first came out, an ex-girlfriend of mine kept saying “It’s like ‘The Dark Knight’ and you love that, so why don’t you like this?”
I’ve seen it 3 times so far and just can’t get over how uninteresting I find this take on Superman.
@@lexio9913 I thought it was very good. Obviously it didn’t need all the scenes that made it 4 hours but all in all it was the movie I had hoped to see. There are parts of Snyder’s vision that I wished he had done a different take but all in all I’ve enjoyed his movies in the DCEU.
@@christianc.christian5025, When I first saw it I was thought it was mostly good but I can’t say I was initially blown away. I enjoyed Cavill and I loved his suit. I thought it was darker then Superman needs to be. However, as I’ve seen his character grow you understand just how isolated he felt even with all his gifts. To regular people seeing his powers makes Superman godlike. To Clark it was a reminder that even though he looks “human” he’s not. He meets Lois and finds out about who he is and he changes. I hope that we see Cavill again before they blow it all up again.
Man of Steel is the definition of a movie that the audience can appreciate more every time they watch it.
It for sure aged really damn well. Heck, even the visual presentation holds up better than most of the CG-heavy blockbusters that came out around that time.

The audio motifs also carry through in many cases with the visuals. Same music when Jor el and the indian kid were swimming.
The black suit is because in the comics it absorbs sun light faster so that he can heal to full strength faster since he came back from the dead . nothin to do with going evil .
Yeah, but in BvS they showed Clark regenerate from being basically a skeleton in the _blue_ suit. They'd already showed him coming back from something that _looked worse_ in the non-solar suit, considering at that point he was basically dead, whereas in JL he comes out of the pool fully capable of beating up the entire team.
That said, even if they didn't mangle the textual importance of the black suit just to reference DKR in the previous movie, it could _still_ have multiple meanings. It could textually be a "Absorb more sunlight" option, but _subtextually_ represent Superman going darker.

No comicbook movies have ever been dissected like Zack Snyder's films. Yet everyone says Zack Snyder is only style over substance. This video proves that Zack not only understands the characters better than others want to give him credit but proves that the audience only sees these characters on a superficial level because Zack films are loaded with subtext and mythology. It’s weird to me for the Snyder movies to get so much hate. I absolutely loved man of steel and saw the extended cut of bvs, and loved it too. I didn’t get what the problem was with either of the movies. And then… Justice League. Man that movie was a mess.
I recently finally saw the Snyder cut and once again, loved it. I’d be up for more ‘snyderverse’ movies but that ship has sailed, apart from maybe the Flash movie? While I loved The Batman, I’m kinda bummed we Never got the Affleck movie.
They were too ahead of their time. This was almost as close as we’d get to an adaptation of some of the best DC comics grounded in a dark reality

Superman isn’t real, and that’s the point. He’s a Superman so when he’s faced with a tough choice like killing the last of his kind or saving people he chooses option c because he’s Superman. Course a Superman raised by a dude who didn’t want him to be a hero would be a really shitty Superman as evident by the new 52.
Batman is exactly like miller’s Batman minus any of the history, nuance and perspective. There’s nothing unfortunately more comic accurate these days than a Batman and Superman who hate each other for no fucking reason even though they are best friends and the reason them fighting was such a big thing in DKR is because they were friends, best friends and it’s tragic their lives have diverged in such a way that it’s come down to that showdown. Also which comic was it where Batman just murdered everyone with very little resolution to him not doing that anymore? I mean it’s taken until The Batman where a Batman doesn’t murder the villain at the end so not sure that’s very comic accurate
After that it’s also not a universe that could be built like the comics especially with what’s established and what’s wanted to be done.
Black Adam and Shazam don’t work in a world where man of steel exists, they work in a world where Superman does but Papa Kent wouldn’t have jumped in a tornado if he remembered that old team of superhero’s who used to watch on the news as a young man. Much like in the comics.

I never knew it was Superman losing touch with his humanity after the resurrection that caused him to choose the black suit. I just thought it was a reference to the comics so this makes it so much more interesting.

The snyderverse wasn’t the best thing to start off DCs first ever cinematic universe with. However, if you look at it as it’s own thing without comparing it to DCs original content, the snyderverse is one of the best sagas to ever exist in my opinion

Well DC has so many different versions of the same characters because so many different people has written them over the years, so I don't really agree with your take.
@Luc Germain I think that MoS is a better movie overall next to MoT. But MoT is a better Superman movie.
I think DCEU started with Snyderverse or MoS because of Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy that possibly grounded a sense of realism in those movies, which somewhat perpetuate people to assume DC to be that way during that time. We just had Dark Knight Rises in 2012, and MoS a year later. I'd say MoS seemed perfect to kickstart the DCEU.
Talk about characters development, I'd also believe that Superman from MoS would eventually grow to become the one that people are familiar with. Perhaps it'd make sense to display the flaws of a perpetual flawless character (in terms of strengths) and make him eventually overcomes them than introducing him as an all-rounded individual that people contstantly label him as 'boy scout'.
Nah- you must have never read John Bryne’s “Man Of Steel” it’s also a movie,not a comic book,which is a totally different medium. Marvel takes more liberties in their movies and NO ONE bats an eye.

Sure, WB butchered BvS, but even critics declared that the Ultimate Cut would have been better received. Knowing this, the haters still cling to the theatrical cut for legitimacy, as they do Whedon's mess.

@@subtleb1138 That's because it wasn't Superman yet. It was Clark Kent in a cape. Then, in BvS (Snyder Cut) Kent struggled between being hated as a Kryptonian or being worshipped as a god. He figured it out at the end when he CHOSE to be Superman, and especially after being brought back in ZSJL. You saw the very same story in Reeves' The Batman. Was Wayne the same in the end as he began? Or did Batman develop and emerge?
Why is it that Superman fans can argue that his heart is what makes Superman, yet in Snyder's development arc the cape alone was supposed to do it? I know, because with Donner, the cape alone did it.
You Superman fans missed the entire point, which is why you cheated yourself out of this awesome Superman story.

20:00 I don't believe that the black suit is thematically tied to Superman losing his human side because Snyder has said in an interview that the black suit is symbolic of humanity by referencing Robert Bly's book "The Red, White and Black."
That's definitely true, though in another interview from around the same time, he tied the black suit more directly to Krypton - specifically in contrast to the blue suit representing his place on earth. I think the Black Suit = Krypton reading ties in better to what's depicted in the movies themselves, while the Bly thing requires a viewer to step outside the movie to understand that meaning.

@@empirewreckers I do remember reading that interview, so perhaps "the black of humanity" is less literal about being human and more about being an individual since that interview regarding the black suit tying back to Krypton feels like Clark accepting who he is. I also find it interesting that Superman dons the red and blue after he had his humanity stripped away by Darkseid. What an interesting discussion.
@@zhengyingli I think the point about Clark being made here is that his humanity is simultaneously a product of Earth while also being his gift to it which he brought with him from Krypton.

the water and fire symbolism reminded me of RRR that i watched in theatre recently. It was first time symbolism was made so apparent in every shot of the movie and it was gorgeous to look at.

I've watched several video essays on Zach Snyder's Trilogy/His version of Superman, however this is the first time I've had someone share the water&fire motif. Learning more about MOS over time has only intensified my love for the film, but thanks to you this new perspective just makes the film that much more impressive. What I noticed from each of these movies is that while Zack Snyder can put together a scene, he can't stitch scenes together into something greater than the individual pieces. His scenes don't build on each other. They don't end by setting up the next scene, which is vital for creating a sense of flow and building momentum. Every scene just stands by itself, disconnected from what has come immediately prior or what follows it. This is why the films often feel exhausting to watch.
it's opposite actually, difference is he don't satisfy regular viewers inside rules and borders of cinema we accustomed to, instead he makes movies closer to real life than actual movies despite using fantastical and mythological elements. Like Aristotle said: Probable impossibilities are to be preferred to improbable possibilities. But people nowadays didn't watch movies for thinking or philosophy, they want entertainment.

It's all very interesting but the bottom line is , did Man of Steel connect w/ audiences? I'd say solidly NO. It wasn't a complete failure but Snyder's take on the legacy DC characters was very dark, . . especially Superman. Unlike the original film, this Superman movie came & went and had been forgotten.
The Snyder trilogy has to be my most favourite movie trilogy ever! ❤🎉 I’m glad to hear some more people finally come around to seeing how good it was! I can guarantee that later on Batman v superman will be looked upon as a masterpiece in the same vein as blade runner !!
Maybe this is an irrelevant detail, but in Christian iconography, "red" and "blue" take on archetypal motifs for Heaven and Earth, which is why both Mary and Jesus are depicted in those colors but in reverse pattern (Earth elevated to Heaven in the case of the Virgin Mother, Heaven descending to Earth in the case of the Christ). And that's without even touching the heavily loaded theological symbolism behind both fire (Pentecost, Hell, etc) and water (Baptism, Flood, etc)...
Just thought that was an interesting correspondence between religio-mythic imagery and Snyder's artistic pallet.

I learned so much from this video. The most important thing I took it from is that "visual symbolism not matter how subtle or heavy handed it is NEVER enough to make a great movie"

@@kartikadewi3270 i mean you can spend years trying to find symbolism the director tried or not to put in the mvie (purely your imagination creating coïncidence into well thought out symbolism) it doesnt change the fact that (to me) this is a bad movie. Because of other thing such as pacing, writing directing. But that just me.in order to me to appreciate this kind of movies I need to feel something the characters or the stakes in it. Here I didnt feel any sympathy for any of those characters. But hey that is just me and my opinion, I dont like zack snyder dc movie.

Plot doesn't equate a story. Characters, themes, 'symbolism' and 'imagery' especially can inform a story. Plot is like a road map an A to B , we're going to go here and then there for the characters. Even if you have a great Plot that alone does not make a great film unless you have characters a story or themes and imagery that is packed with information that is conveyed cinematically. Most Scorsese films don't have plots or Tarantino movies. Most people remember movies, films because of the characters and subconsciously or unconsciously the themes. It's the characters, story and overall cinematic experience that people remember. If you want plot you could just read a short story. LA Confidential preserves the story and characters rather than the plot. Characters that drive the plot are so much more interesting than characters that are subservient to the plot and can't break free of it
@@prime20687 Plot and story are two different things - but that doesn't mean that you can just ignore plot.
Suspension of disbelief is basic. If people check out of your movie because it makes no sense... the story and theme can be fantastic, it won't matter.
Sure, if you want to make an experimental film, or a music video with no plot - go for it.
But, Tarantino films, for example, all have a plot.
Of course characters drive the plot, but they can just as easily behave in unrealistic ways for story purposes.
People usually don't remember plot details years later, but they sure as hell notice it during the film.
@Roper122 but he buries the plot so it doesn't call attention to itself and the plot is minimal. Inglorious Basterds is one of his first movies where the plot is more obvious in terms of it's set up. Yeah of course people notice the plot while they're watching a film but it isn't something they generally recall back as to why a good or great film is a good or great film. Glass Onion has a really dense plot so what. Reservoir Dogs has a minimalist plot it's about the characters. Recently the Banshees of Inisherin you're literally told almost straight away the plot so you can just spend time with the characters. Plot isn't always the most important thing. In a mystery or a film noir a labyrinthine plot can be fun to follow but if you haven't got interesting or compelling characters who cares
