Lois did not say "you smell good" this time around, she said "you spoke." While in the Whedon Cut, Clark had taunted Bruce by repeating his "do you bleed" line, in the Snyder Cut he was completely silent for the entire scene, and his reaction showed that he didn't even notice it himself. "This is home" are his first words since coming back from the dead in the Snyder Cut, and I think it's a more poignant first line.

Great video essay. But Lois doesn’t say, “You smell good.” She says, “You spoke” because it was actually the first time Clark says anything since being resurrected. In the Snyder Cut, Superman remains confused and not himself after being brought back to life, which also explains why Snyder didn’t have him remember the events of BvS and taunt Batman by saying, “Do you bleed?” Just more things that show Whedon was obsessed more about inserting his stupid jokes than understanding the story and the characters.
Superman punching Steppenwolf through the portal is a callback to Man Of Steel, where he was convinced he could somehow beat Zod without killing him- he says "I'm going to stop you!" and then gets Zod in a headlock and just stops, like he's won the fight and now Zod has to say Uncle and go away. Zod says "you can only stop me by killing me" and he turns out to be right. In Justice League, Superman punches Steppenwolf through the portal, planning to non-lethally dispose of him- this IS a circumstance where you can just make the baddie go away! And it probably would have been that simple, if Steppenwolf hadn't taunted Wonder Woman so much and made her really mad...
Act 1 had me screaming internally cursing your name for being too accurate, but Act 3 is legitimately the best dissection of the film I've seen yet. Almost as big a comeback as Mr. Snyder. And I'm glad you didn't write off the epilogue just because it had the big bad Leto Joker, as it is the thematic cherry on top, as you so highlighted. Hallelujah.
I thought that Martian Manhunter should have revealed himself to Superman. Superman revealing himself, should have inspired him to join and fight for humanity as himself. But I'm still wondering why he didn't help in the end fight. That would have been nice.
I agree that Martian Manhunter should have revealed himself Superman since they were both aliens, but it was okay to reveal himself to Batman. I think Martian manhunter didn't reveal himself due to mankind being potentially fearful of him.
I recently read someone’s comment on another video and suggested that Clark already knew about MM but wanted to respect that secret identity kept, like during MOS at the interrogation room where Clark breaks the handcuffs the only one who didn’t flinch or surprised was the general and when Clark X-rayed the room to show that he could see them the only person he didn’t call out was the general. The only other person who actually called the kryptonians by their name was the general since during zod’s message he didn’t introduce him and his group as kryptonians, just revealing that Clark was there and demand that he should be handed over.
The scene was supposed to be done with Green lantern revealing himself to Bruce Wayne but WB shit over it because zack was using too many characters(as to my knowledge) and it ended up with Martian Manhunter instead
"I don't know how that works because Cark was publicly announced dead". That's comic books thought lol. Happens every time and they never explain it. Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, etc. Any time a hero dies or goes missing for years nobody every asks questions when they return.
Her line is "you spoke" to which Clark replies "did I not before?" Watch it again if needed. Even the subtitles say "you spoke" not Josh Whedon's "you smell good."
While I don’t really enjoy Synder’s films (other than the weird owl one, because it’s just so weird), I still enjoyed this video. I will say, something I figured you were going to mention but you didn’t that I think is worth noting - you mention how the Justice League coming together is, symbolically, the reuniting of cultures. The thing is, all of the heroes are explicitly mavericks by the standards of their cultures - Clark the only non-test tube baby, Diana leaving home for the great wide out there, Bruce using his wealth to do good, Barry having a tie to the prisons, and Cyborg as a cyborg. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but it definitely would affect your argument, I think.
I actually think it reinforces it. These abnormal champions of their society are the ones to unite them because of their individuality. The reason these civilizations don't want to unite is because their legacy restricts it. If all red wants to do is be red, they will never meet with blue and with green. It isn't until a red accidentally or on purpose makes a purple, it then starts to realize that why are we so closed off, let me be different, let me reach out. In Man of Steel that's why Jor El even sent Clark to Earth in the first place. He didn't want to him to be raised as a Kryptonian because they were all set in their ways and refused to change due to some sense of tradition and legacy. It takes the outlier to think outside the box and to want to do something different than what their civilization or society has been telling them or intends them to do. All these paragons of their different societies both embody all the strengths of their civilizations while allowing them to be different so they can think outside of their people's conditioning.
Building on what cbear94 said, traditionally *all* mythological heroes are outliers of some kind, either gods or demigods who are a cut above the rest in some way form of function. Hercules ridiculously strong even by divine standards, Odysseus brilliant and clever, Atalanta a female warrior as strong as a man, Achilles almost completely invincible, etc. But like Jason that something extraordinary makes other people follow them, and follow their example. And like Perseus the deeds they accomplish make them leaders in their cultures.
I don’t like Snyder’s films but I actually really enjoyed JLSC. Yeah, it had some of the usual issues I have with Snyder’s direction but the writing was waaaaaay better than it was in his two previous superhero flicks

Athena, Hades, Poseidon, Hermes and Hephaestus team up to resurrect Apollo. (I know Ares is an actual guy already, but the guy from MARS who masquerades as a military commander feels like he's kind of an Ares.)
A really good commentary that dives deeper into the hidden meanings of ZSJL. I'm not gonna lie, as much as I loved this film, I kinda thought that the movie was extremely shallow compared to something as loaded as BvS and MoS. But this vid made me realize I was wrong, and ZSJL was MUCH more subtle about its themes than those two movies. And from the looks of it, it seems like this type of more subtle storytelling worked better for the general audiences. It's also probably why a lot of them felt something "welling up inside them" whenever they saw some scenes but are unable to elaborate on it. I think your video pretty much uncovered the movie's hidden elements that were causing these unexplainable emotions and thoughts we experienced as audiences. One thing I have to add: As much as I loved this movie, I absolutely agree with you that this movie feels incomplete, even on a detail-level. It's interesting because MoS and BvS are movies that can stand on their own without each other, but ZSJL feels like a small part that was ripped out of a bigger movie. I think this becomes even more apparent when the movie didn't explain certain parts of the story. Like, why did Darkseid forget about Earth's location? (There was apparently a civil war in his homeworld, which could easily explain how his former allies would have erased Earth's coordinates somehow as a last "f you" before falling to Darkseid.) Why doesn't Flash just spam time reversal? (The movie kinda implies this, but if Flash reverses time to save something, then something of equal value will be lost, which explains how reviving Superman got Silas killed, and saving the world would result in the knightmare world.) I honestly would have preferred if Zack showed scenes that explained these problems, but it's clear that Zack, although having clear explanations for these things already, decided to elaborate on these interesting problems in the sequel. Stuff like this definitely shows ZSJL isn't a movie that's supposed to be able to stand on its own. But yeah, aside from this, it's honestly a splendid movie that takes you on big trip. If I'm not mistaken, I think you were pretty mixed on BvS, so it's awesome to hear that you enjoyed this movie more. Thanks for the awesome essay. I can appreciate this movie even now thanks to you.
The "You smell good." line was not in ZSJL. But this video was wonderfully done. I've seen ZSJL twice now, and there so many things to admire about it. One of the best DCEU films.
People looking back on BvS and MoS and being like ah shit it was part of the plan all along to have it go from grim to light and have faith restored sents me everytime.
No not really, MOS yes, BvS is still frustrating to get through, it’s dark going to more dark and JL is in the middle of light and dark and from the looks of it even MORE dark That’s not enjoyable
@@ninjanibba4259 yes MoS is dark But then Superman’s Consequences Is truly brought up with BvS and Plus it’s a Batman movie on it’s side so it kinda has to be a dark movie. It all culminates in Clark’s death into which the world would go into despair and By the ending of Justice league and beginning of JL 2 or a majority of it the film would have been lighter due to hope restored after the league formed and Superman came back. @@thabreez456 that’s a fine view, but don’t you think Superman and Batman should’ve had their own films of before their on screen? I mean Superman gets his own story and Batman is thrusted into Superman’s story with little time to get a true arc, maybe that would help Batman killing look more justified somehow Plus JL used Superman as a prop instead of finishing his own arc, Batman gets to bring the team together but all that darkness of him just goes away? Maybe that should be questioned like Superman was in BvS Idk, it’s all rushed in some areas and with the runtimes given, there’s no reason it wouldn’t be there to flesh things out properly
@@ninjanibba4259 i think cause we’ve already seen a alpha of Batman in Nolan’s trilogy Zack wanted to show a new perspective and So his arc in BvS requires Superman. He needed superman to inspire him and the others, especially Batman for their characters in JL. Notice how in JL when Superman comes back batman doesn’t try to just brute force at him like in BvS where he was so blinded by hatred he didn’t even bother to listen to Clark asking him to help him with Lex. I think mostly that’s why Zack never gave them all a solo movie. Most of their characters were shaped by The League members. Such as Cyborg by Diana and His Father Aquaman’s Ignorance of his responsibilities And his eventual acceptance of it is shown by joining the league. All them are broken and alone in their minds but it takes each other for them to realize they aren’t.
@@ninjanibba4259 we had gotten man of steel and bvs which are both Superman films technically speaking. I do want an actual man of steel sequel tho, but that can’t be blamed on zack, only the studio. As for Batman, same thing but I get the feeling that the studio didn’t want another Batman movie after just getting around to finishing the Nolan trilogy. They probably were hesitant on that which forced zack to make this. At the end of the day tho, this character is different from what we have seen of him before and was made to be that way. An interesting take that u don’t need to like or dislike, but appreciate when his character arc comes full circle.

Then, I'd read the article in Vanity Fair, where they interviewed writer Chris Terrio, and he also had some stories to tell, about how mismanaged everything was. He goes into some detail about just awful those people running WB truly are, as well. I have one slim defense for the violence Wonder Woman inflicted upon the terrorists in the London bank (and arguably the rest of JL for that matter in Zack's DCEU): Zack Snyder is a Christian, and the Bible keeps bringing up how God will inflict his divine justice upon those who are of wicked nature. But in the context strictly of DC Comics, Diana is the loosest with any no-kill rule (if any); she's a warrior after all. She thrives off of battle

Amy Adams next role should be Samus Aran. She has a really quiet and contemplative demeanor that matches the character really well. Start with the Zero Suit and build up the suit with plot points and action. And the whole film should be silent like Wall-E.
My biggest and main problem with the Snyder cut is Superman. The movie does center around how Superman's death is the catalyst for the events of the movie, how Superman being gone is the inspiration for the formation of the justice league, and how Superman is the only member of the justice league powerful enough to defeat Steppenwolf, but it still sets Superman on a darker path whether he's a hero or a potential villain. When he's the hero, Superman wears his black suit as a metaphor to how he has changed, and he brutally attacks Steppenwolf when his job is mainly to subdue his opponent. I feel that the theatrical cut really did bring Superman back and made him be the true Superman.
@Lordyeezusberry I respectfully disagree. Ideals matter, especially when the world is in danger of being destroyed. Ideals can't just be forgotten for convenience or you risk losing sight of what you are fighting for. Superman is special because of the ideals he represents.
@Lordyeezusberry a life without ideals isn't worth living. The knightmare scenes show what happened when Superman loses not only his loved ones, but his ideals. Superman becomes a slave of Darkseid and caused much death and destruction.
@@StareachValcin He doesn't lose his ideals in the knightmare sequence he becomes vulnerable after losing Lois and then falls under the influence of the anti life equation. Plus if he was going to kill Steppenwolf don't you think he would've lasered his whole head rather than his horn? Also what would they do after subduing him? Throw him into the space? What stops him from coming back with more? His ideals are still in there when he is dealing with earth problems. This concerns the whole planet. "You need ideals against threats like Doomsday" was he supposed to talk sense into Doomsday?? I'd like you to explain what do you mean by ideals against aliens invading earth?
It's not a movie. Movies are specifically timed for theatres an then a longer director cut which follows the same format. This is a new thing that will become more prominent with streaming services. For a few reasons 22 min episode is only for cable tv channels 92 minute run time is long for theatres Yet one can go wide open with one episode long form storytelling on streaming.
I really dig this movie, but hot damn, if Whedon actually tried making a 2-hour version of it to release, instead of adding all the nonsense he did, I wonder what would've happened then. #RestoreTheSnyderverse
Correction: Steppenwolf activates the Unity, and all the kingdoms AND ALFRED watch in horror. Don't underestimate the super senses of the most powerful being on the planet.
Let's be clear: the Bruce-Lois storyline was planned to be the two of them lifting each other out of their guilt and grief throughout the first Justice League movie. Like a widow who's firefighter husband died on 9/11 and became romantically involved with his best friend, or something. And then Superman suddenly re-enters the picture and it can't happen. Bruce knows this, but the damage has already been done. I think this is a very human way to show how people can learn to love again (and Batman, for Christ sake) and what its consequences are. I thought it was bold and a great opportunity. Oh well.
I'm not really bothered by Superman maiming Steppenwolf or participating in his death. In my book, you threaten to destroy the whole planet, you lose your mercy pass. Superman's never really had the endless mercy that characters like Batman and Spider-Man have traditionally had in the comics. Batman being a murder-machine rings far more false than Superman brutalizing enemies that can clearly take it.
I feel like Flashpoint already happened in Zack Snyder's Universe, it's just that we never got to know of it on screen. Because of Bruce having those Knightmares.
My headcanon is that Bruce sending Flash to tinker with time caused one universe that was *close* to averting the Knightmare (Josstice League) and then after one more tweak we got ZSJL, which lead to Barry creating Flashpoint and eventually completely averting the Knightmare.
I don’t mind the idea of Lois having Bruce’s kid too much as long as she wasn’t cheating on Clark. Feels weird but tolerable. What I don’t like is that Bruce was unable or insufficiently motivated to save Lois unless he learnt it was his own flesh & blood at stake. There’s no way he wouldn’t endanger himself to save Lois, he knows Superman’s hope & light depends on her so for that alone he’d sacrifice himself to save her. Tweak it a bit like in the first timeline he’s separated by bulletproof glass which he tries to punch through to get to her but in the rebooted timeline after Flash’s warning he’s desperate enough to throw a grenade at the glass to break it but gets injured from the blast & shrapnel. Then bloodied & bruised as he is he throws himself in front of the Omega beams to save her.
In the storyboards Bruce tries to save her the first time, before he knew she was carrying his child but he comes too late. This is the timeline in which Barry warns Bruce in BvS, he even says "Am I too soon?" because at that point Bruce hasn't even met Barry yet so Bruce doesn't understand why Lois is the key. After the events of JL, Darkseid comes to earth, Lex tells Darkseid that Lois is Superman's weakness and he comes after her in Batcave. No one expects Darkseid going after her and Bruce can't react in enough time. Knigtmare stuff happens, Barry says to Bruce that's his child Lois is carrying, coming in a correct time this time. Bruce is a bit more protective of her instinctively and he is able react in time this time, taking the omega beams himself.
If the point of your analysis is to have a more nuanced appreciation of the media and source material then you've succeeded. If not then your original goals have been exceeded. Good job!
When the Ayer cut comes out you should do a video about the whole Snyder verse. Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League.
When I first heard about Bruce and Lois ship......yeah I was like wtf however, now watching both version of JL, in sense of script writing yeah it makes sense as it would allow Lois to be more involved in the major plot.

badass?
@@slkjvlkfsvnlsdfhgdght5447in most storylines (except for maybe the Burton films) Alfred is former British special ops. In the Snyder films, Alfred has three roles; the classic Alfred that is a mentor, Lucius Fox type character that helps design, repair, and build Batman’s equipment, and part Oracle by providing intelligence and targeting information over the radio from the Batcave. Lastly, Aquaman literally calls uses the word badass when he first meets him. So it’s safe to say that every character (except maybe Diana) wishes they had their father figure available to them like Bruce does.

I spent my Easter bringing the Zack trilogy. It’s basically Jesus doing and coming back to life lol
So it had no meaning before?
Lois did not say "you smell good" this time around, she said "you spoke."
While in the Whedon Cut, Clark had taunted Bruce by repeating his "do you bleed" line, in the Snyder Cut he was completely silent for the entire scene, and his reaction showed that he didn't even notice it himself. "This is home" are his first words since coming back from the dead in the Snyder Cut, and I think it's a more poignant first line.
Like a lost child who has no real geographical knowledge of world, bur who is still able to point out how home looks like

Authur did stab Steppenwolf in the back through the chest, he was dead already but Superman just sent the body back to Apocalypse

Hallelujah.
at least the climax has a theme in this cut. the original cut was just "yay superheros"
If you rewatch the scene where Lois shows up, that’s the moment Clark saw that she was pregnant - she even nods her head at him
I thought that Martian Manhunter should have revealed himself to Superman. Superman revealing himself, should have inspired him to join and fight for humanity as himself. But I'm still wondering why he didn't help in the end fight. That would have been nice.
He was waiting for the heroes of Earth to unite. Why? I don't know and we may never found out...
Yeah.....

This movie is becoming one that I need to watch at least once a year...

People looking back on BvS and MoS and being like ah shit it was part of the plan all along to have it go from grim to light and have faith restored sents me everytime.
No not really, MOS yes, BvS is still frustrating to get through, it’s dark going to more dark and JL is in the middle of light and dark and from the looks of it even MORE dark
That’s not enjoyable
@@ninjanibba4259 yes MoS is dark But then Superman’s Consequences Is truly brought up with BvS and Plus it’s a Batman movie on it’s side so it kinda has to be a dark movie. It all culminates in Clark’s death into which the world would go into despair and By the ending of Justice league and beginning of JL 2 or a majority of it the film would have been lighter due to hope restored after the league formed and Superman came back.
It’s like Jason Momoa said in the snyder cut

@@thabreez456 that’s a fine view, but don’t you think Superman and Batman should’ve had their own films of before their on screen? I mean Superman gets his own story and Batman is thrusted into Superman’s story with little time to get a true arc, maybe that would help Batman killing look more justified somehow
Plus JL used Superman as a prop instead of finishing his own arc, Batman gets to bring the team together but all that darkness of him just goes away? Maybe that should be questioned like Superman was in BvS
Idk, it’s all rushed in some areas and with the runtimes given, there’s no reason it wouldn’t be there to flesh things out properly

Always a great time watching your videos, you strike a great balance of humour and actual new insights I hadn't necessarily though of before or at least haven't heard. Also definitely worth sending this to Amy Adams' management so she hears your proposal
If you are a fan of this franchise & want to see it continue, them I would encourage you to read the article in the Hollywood Reporter, where they interviewed Ray Fisher (Cyborg), and he goes into more detail about what happened to him during production of this movie, and how both the director (Joss Whedon) and the studio, mistreated him.

I’d love to see your essays about the animated Justice League and Batman movies
@Lordyeezusberry you need ideals against threats like Doomsday and especially evil despots like Darkseid. Superman without ideals isn't Superman.
@Lordyeezusberry without ideals, Superman becomes just as much of a threat as the likes of Doomsday and Darkseid.

Movies are specifically timed for theatres an then a longer director cut which follows the same format.
This is a new thing that will become more prominent with streaming services.
For a few reasons
22 min episode is only for cable tv channels
92 minute run time is long for theatres
Yet one can go wide open with one episode long form storytelling on streaming.
I doubt it will catch on quick. Not many watch 4 hours without brakes, many just stop it forever at some point.
Average movie length is about 100 min so 92 is definitely not long. But your point still stands

Ok, ok. I've listened to about a dozen of your videos so far.
That line got you a sub and a bell ring.
Oh well.
Legit one of the best channels on TH-cam
I'm not really bothered by Superman maiming Steppenwolf or participating in his death. In my book, you threaten to destroy the whole planet, you lose your mercy pass. Superman's never really had the endless mercy that characters like Batman and Spider-Man have traditionally had in the comics. Batman being a murder-machine rings far more false than Superman brutalizing enemies that can clearly take it.
I respectfully disagree.
The ending clip bro 😭😭😭
This movie was awesome but personally I like BvS UE more.
