  • There has been a long debate on whether the military should use Semi Auto Sniper Weapons in favor of traditional Bolt Action Weapons.
Dave and Dick discuss the pros and cons of both type of weapons.
The bolt action rifle featured in the clip is a Tactical Rifles M40, chambered in .308

now before i watch this video, what i am thinking is that the muzzle energy collected in the gas system to reset the receiver on a semi auto would be a significant loss in muzzle energy for the round to go down range, picture the gasses having to reset the receiver rather than keeping the gasses in the barrel to propel the bullet at a higher velocity found with bolt action. many of you may not agree but why do we all hunt with bolt action as opposed to semi auto rifles? many of my semi auto's are either shotguns or .22's..

Bolt actions are better but the m107 is a beast. Also the bolt actions are usually employed as teams (shooter and spotter) which makes it more effective. The extra range that the bolt action gives can function as an area denial tool. Nobody is going to want to go within several hundred meters of a well trained team. Increased range allows the team to be farther away and harder to detect their position as well as increasing the stand-off distance (my weapon shoots farther than yours).

it really depends for long range bolt action for close range semi auto

its all quite simple i think
standard dmr- less then 1km range sniper rifles must be semi-automatic
specialized state of the art long range sniper rifles: bolt action
though i woud like to see what an accurate semi automatic 6.5mm lapua magnum coud do

I say it depends on how much money you have. $600 or less .308 for a bolt action that shoots in less than 2 MOA or $1700 .308 or more for a semiautomatic (such as an AR-10) that shoots 2 MOA or less. Both are fantastic firearms it is more are you willing to pay that much more for semiautomatic.

There are AR style semi auto's that are 1/2 moa accurate these days. So if you can get that kind of accuracy and have it in semi auto, why not? People don't understand the direct gas impigement system in AR's. no parts move on a gas impigement system AR until the bullet has already left the barrel. The same cannot be said about the newer piston operated AR's.
