  • I'm working with Blythes Sports to come up with a solid 1000 yard rifle for $1000. The Savage Model 10 is an ideal candidate as it's a very accurate rifle featuring a 5R barrel and the Savage Accu-Trigger system. We topped off the Savage Model 10 with a Lucid L5 6-24x50mm scope. Stay tuned as there's more to come from this video series.

I have a Walmart Savage 10 chambered in .308 . Paid almost dirt for the rifle. I have a Vortex Crossfire II 6-24x50 for $300.00 and I can reach out to 1000 yds. Savage and vortex makes a great combo !! Plus I LOVE the accu-trigger.

I find watching "racing to make the most cost effect" 1000yd rifle is far more exciting than watching "taticool" rifles that costs outrageous amounts.

Most call it "trace", and yes - it's the bullet causing a disturbance in the atmosphere that's visible through the spotting scope. Spotters for snipers will use this to call the shot and give the sniper/shooter adjustments to their hold-over so they can get on target for the next shot.

I don't know what Savage firearms does with the rifles, but they one of the best accurate barrels on the market for an American made rifle and a factory rifle at that

No issues with the Accu-Trigger. I like it quite a bit, it is one of the best out of the box triggers I've used without going to a 3rd party match trigger. As for the stock, it's too short for me and the comb is less than ideal. However, this is a budget build and there's no room for a McMillan or Manners stock in the budget.

unless your are doing competition, 1 MOA is probably more than enough. If you are trying to hit a man sized target out to 1000 yards then, if the MOA holds (which isn't always true) you will have a 10" group at a 1000 yards. The average man is 22" across from shoulder to shoulder.

That's because the 870 is an old design now being made with bad workmanship. Bolt actions are supposed to be overbuilt. We're all used to overbuilt bolts. So an underbuilt one makes your head spin.

spraynpray when i bought my 870 5 years ago i put 200 rounds through it, then went skeet shooting and half way into the shoot i pulled the trigger abd the gun didnt go off..6 secounds later and BOOM it went off.

5k for a rifle that cant' shoot a one inch group at 1000 yards, That would piss me off, considering you can save up and buy a Barrett 50 cal and just be done with it. I think that is what I would do. I mean if I had 10k to spend on a long range rifle. But most ranges don't go out to a mile sadly lol.

When I shot for the USAF Rifle Team, we used the 168 Fed Gold Match back to 600 yes, but we had to shoot the M118LR with 175gr SMK, because the 168 would go sub-sonic before 1000yds and key hole through the target.

I'd say slap the money into a fixed power scope for that low amount of cash, more robust with more features & better glass. a 12x or 16x SWFA SS should fit the bill nicely, and still leave a hefty chunk of cash for the rifle.

I took my G2DMR off my rifle, left it in the rings and beat the living snot out of it on a rubber matt in my garage. I was trying to get some dust off of the glass. I figured if it did not come off I did not care how hard I hit it as I would send it in anyway. When I was done, I put it back on the rifle, and it did not move the zero at all. Not even one click was needed. The new Bushnell scopes are tough as they come. I've had 3 and they are beasts. The dust came off the scope in the 2nd shot.

I have the same exact rifle with a similar scope. I work in a gun shop and often tell people, as they're drooling over mine, "I can get you a 1000 yard rifle for about $1000" Sold!

  • @silvermediastudio
    @silvermediastudio 11 ปีที่แล้ว

It's the system, and the work done ahead of time. You can't put first-shot cold-bore hits on targets at unknown distances in the 800-1200yard and beyond range, in varied terrain without having worked up the firing tables for the rifle and loads to be used. It's all important when calculating and inputting the firing solution. Often overlooked is the accuracy and repeatability of the scope turrets, absolutely crucial for long range precision.

I'm also building a 1000 for a 1000. I opted for a Savage in 6.5CM and was very happy with both the factory Hornady and my hand loads shooting a consistent 1/2 moa even with the kit scope(which I removed). Instead of a variable power I opted for a fixed power swfa 10x since fixed power scopes tend to give better results for cheaper prices. Haven't got an opportunity to get on the 1000 yard line yet but I'm very optimistic that this setup will reliably hit steel at a grand.

Also, they track very well, I've never heard anyone complain about any of the HDMR/G2DMR/ERS/XRS not tracking. I've seen one XRS go down, but all scope brands will have a few bad apples in the bunch. That includes brands like S&B. I've dragged my Bushnell though about everything and it does nothing but preform.

I just stumbled across this channel and I love the way your going about this series. With a mortgage, car insurance, a limited paycheck and the rest of it I have to be very budget conscious about my firearms purchases. I would love to throw cash at a Gucci rifle but that's not going to happen and to be honest I'm not going to spend my life at a range. Its nice to see what a sub $800 rifle can do. Many thanks!
Also, ever thought of doing a series where you take an average Joe interested in shooting and build them up into a better shooter. Just thought it might be entertaining.

I have a Savage 111 FCNS in 7mm Rem Mag w/ an SWFA 10x42 mil/mil/side focus. It's a great optic for the price - hard to beat, really. That will get you out to 1000 meters reliably and for around $1k (although I am putting a new $1,000 chassis on it soon). I love the Accu-Trigger on mine.

  • @nilescoyote4829
    @nilescoyote4829 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Mac, great episode! Couple comments from a fellow Young’s member. The 168 SMK is going to give you problems in a 308 with consistency from one day to the next. Depending on the Barometric Pressure and Temperature of a given day it may or may not work well past the 800 yard line. It’s an issue with how the bullet is designed and how it handles the transition to subsonic flight. The 175 smk works a lot better and handles the transition well. As does many other bullets.

And the Savage barrels usually take about 500-1000 rounds to get maximum accuracy. My Savage 110 actioned with Adams and Bennett barrel in .35 Whelen shot its first target into a sub MOA group at 100 yds. I hav not had a place to shoot very long ranges with it but I have no fear it will do fine out to 600. Oh, and by the way, that was with 250 gr. Remington green box.

  • @camk31

Good shooting. One of the advantages of the bolt rifle is that you can single load a lot easier than you can with a semi-auto rifle. I would take advantage of this. Recoil tends to compact the powder in your rounds if they are in the magazine, this can grow group sizes a bit especially if the loads your using are using stick powders. You may not notice a difference shooting 10 rounds here and 20 rounds there, but over the course of a 1000 rounds of recorded data it does make a difference. Hornaday also makes amazing match ammo. The Federal match is still the best match center-fire ammo I have ever run into but Hornaday is a close second. Black Hills ammo is another excellent ammunition if you can find it. I happen to live in the same town that they produce it in, so it's pretty easy for me to get but I'm not real sure about anywhere outside of South Dakota.

MAC, you're going to want to go with 175's or 180's for the 1000 yard shot. The wind-bucking is what makes it at that range, and those just do it so much better than the 168's. Love the 10 FCP series though, they're a great bargain. My FCP-HS is a half-MOA rifle at whatever range you'd fancy to shoot.

Start working with what you have, but longer distances. You have any glass on that rifle? Weaver v7 scope can get you out where you want to be. There's guys out there that can shoot 400 open sights. It's pretty much just for target acquisition/identification. That scope is around 150-180. 5.56 is capable of 600+, for paper punching. Requires better reading of distance/wind, which is good. Learning the basics, saving money. It's a long road to 1000 on a budget.

My first long range rifle was a Savage model similar to this (no break, different bolt) in 300RUM with an Eagle Optics scope. It took a 2 month, 80 round break-in process for the barrel to get long range ready, as is true with long range rifles.... that was an under 1k gun that easily shot 1000M consistently. 168GR A-max handloads by Kudu Kustoms. Shot approx a 2" group at 780yds to prove the weapon the day I sold it. I hate the ergos, trigger, floppy stock of Savage, but at that pricepoint I've never encountered a more accurate rile.

Also, you are going to want a 20moa base and maybe even more with a scope having 50 moa of internal travel, a 30 moa base would be better but may not allow you to zero at 100y. Ideally one would want a scope with more internal travel. I’d also recommend against .125 (1/8”) moa adjustments but that just my personal opinion. Again great episode and nice shooting.

This is my goto rig for the 1000 yard line.

I purchased mine as a Cabelas exclusive and they called it a 10-tactical and it came with that bolt handle.

Thank you for finally doing more of a 'budget' build. I know you prefer military style builds, but think you've been missing another market area like this build.
I've been debating on a Ruger 308 build to play in the 500-1k range, and this will be interesting to compare if you guys do a match build with a Ruger.

I love my PWS brakes, they are FANTASTIC. Their muzzle devices are some of the best out there for the money. I also have their Mk116 Mod 1 in .300 Blackout and they make some amazing rifles too. If you ever get the chance to shoot one and break it down you should, they are quite nice :-D.

    Good vid as always MAC!
If you want to add a humor element, turn the auto captions on. "I'm going to fire this rifle over the chrony" turns to "I'm going to far this rifle over the Crimean"...

Good performance from a sub 1K rifle. I also tried to get a setup that was the best bang for the buck. After much research I got my setup. I'm using a F&H FNAR .308 matched with a Leatherwood Hi-Lux Camputer ART M-1000 2.5-10x 44mm Tactical Rifle Scope. With the 168gr Match Kings I can consistently get .50 to .75 MOA groups @ 100 yards. Unfortunately there isn't any ranges in my area that are further out than 200 yards. I would love to stretch it's legs out at longer ranges!

I have a Howa 1500 Varmint supreme mounted in a Bell and Carlson medalist stock. total price including the aftermarket stock was 700 dollars. Add a Vortex Viper 6-24x44 and you are under the $1000.00 mark and it shoots with consistent sub minute precision. I have shot 1000 yard steel with it, and midrange F class.

I did not stick to the $1000.00 limiy but instead doubled it, $2000.00 & have a rifle setup that I'll put up against ANY of the so called CUSTOM rigs all the way out to 1760yds, thats right 1 mile.
    Savage M-10 FCP-SR
.308 Win, 24" barrel, Nightforce optics,
    handloaded -Alco 168gr,
2780 fps, & an INCREDIBLE AVERAGE of
19.75" group @ that distance. This rifle shots 5 round groups @ 100yds @ less than 1/4" moa.
Savage makes the best out of the box, accurate rifles hands down.

The best part about a savage rifle is that the average joe can do a little homework, and change the barrel himself with a $25 barrel nut wrench, a bench vise, and a simple head space gauge. I love savages, every rifle I own except my .22 is a savage, and I have a new model 12 Long Range Precision on .243 win on the way that should be here this weekend!!!!

I just looked at The Savage Model 10 at my local gun shop. I was in the market for a long range multi purpose rifle and scope for under $1000. I also looked at a Weatherby Vanguard, Remington 700 and a Tikka T3. I ended up choosing the Tikka due to its amazing fit, finish and feel. I would love if you looked at both the Weatherby and Tikka in this video series.

I have an older Savage 110 Tactical, and I like that rifle. Mine is a little like yours in what ammo it likes. It's great with 168gr Federal Gold Medal Match. It even likes the Hornady Match ammo in the same weight. I've tried Remington's 168gr match ammo, and it looks like I fired a shotgun pattern.

Rigidity is harmonics. The less movement, and the more consistent movement you get per shot, the more accurate your rifle is.
Bullet stability comes from twist rate. Get a proper twist and you won't have to worry about barrel length.
And you can get plenty of fps out of even a 14 inch barrel with hand loads.Long range handgun shooters do it all the time.
I shoot a custom .264 Win Mag Mauser with a 1 in 9 twist 19" barrel at 1000 yards, and I'm super sonic out past 1300 with 140gr VLDs.

I got a savage 12 (bull barrel 26in) with the chunk knob bolt handle for $300 on sale. and a $200 monstrum 6-24x56 scope that works well. I plan on up grading the stock and finding a sweet spot load and leave it at that. all in all so far as is. $300 for the rifle, $200 for the scope. $40 for rings and base. $540 altogether. I'll need a custom stock because I have long arms and fingers (34in reach) the stock will probably be at least several hundred dollars.
