The War Thunder players all took the day off from leaking government blueprints to remind me that the ugly sci-fi tank is based off an ugly real life tank as though that somehow fixes the fact that it's ugly. Thank you for your comments though, don't be shy! EDIT: I don't want to disrupt my joke, but I want to add: This is the most fun comments I've read in forever, you've all got a lot of great picks (and awful, downright terrible picks too, but I respect the hustle.)
Yeah but a lot of your criticisms about it are how silly you think it would be in practice, whereas in practice it's actually a pretty normal design for assault guns.
Eh seems your opinion on the 'ugly tank' is clearly driving engagement since from what I've seen, you're one of the few people that finds the Vindicator ugly and not charmingly derpy...but then this is your show, you're allowed to be wrong (joke, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that).
There actually IS an army already for people who like space elves but don't like goths, BDSM, and feet. It's a lot like the Dark Eldar in a lot of ways still. It's called... Eldar (not Dark).
Brad: *has issues with Vindicator for body mounted main gun for difficulty of aiming and that gun takes up crew space* Real-Life SPGs: "This is the price we must pay for the Mobile Tank Blapanator 5000" I love this on an indescribable level.
@@MrChiefchiliThe US had a very deliberate reason for that. They wanted mobile and flexible TD's to serve specifically for counterattacking. That also meant their TD's didn't so much have armour as rather more a vague suggestion of it. As for assault guns, that was very much a "lets stick lots of extra armor onto a Sherman because we're really not seeing that T28 coming anytime soon and we would like to just roll up on an annoying bunker". For most others in WWII it was very much a "find a useful hull, stick a box on top and cram the biggest gun you can fit into it", which is the Vindicator to a T. It's essentially the 40K equivalent of taking an SU-122 and sticking a dozer blade on the front.
The holo-shield on the Lancer is so frustrating though, since you have to pour out a dish of bubble solution and dip the shield in at the start of every game.
The little thing next to Huron is called the Hamadrya. It’s Huron’s chaos familiar that allows him to better perform chaos sorcery and grants him various boons that, though unpredictable in nature, always tend to be what is needed at the time, such as protecting him from psychic attacks and allowing him to read thoughts to avoid assassination attempts. Though that is the form it most often takes it’s said to shift between shapes and just sorta appears and disappears from sight. More importantly, it’s his pet monkey to go along with the whole pirate aesthetic.
@@thepoorhammerpodcast His book is a great listen, really enjoy Huron's voicework. Good if you enjoy the more character focused, politic-y books vs your standard bolter porn. But, I am biased as one of the 5 Red Corsair players that exist.
@@thepoorhammerpodcast He appears in the second book of the Night Lords trilogy, as a somewhat significant character. So that's another reason to read the Night Lords trilogy.
I love his appearance in the Night Lords book for no reason other than first claw just wanting to squish Huron’s pet in every interaction they have with him
Fun fact: In the Necron Codex, there is an official GW list that proxies in Lady Olynder for a Transcendent C'tan so even they know how bad the finecasts are
My friend lost his shit seeing that, he was exclaiming its the first time he's seen proxies officially represented. The price is like 40 bucks to the regular 120 for a crap model so he's doing the same proxy!
You should check Space Nam models by Reptillian Overlords. I used them for my Kill Team. They are what Catachan Jungle Fighters should be. And they are quite affordable too.
@@vxicepickxv I think if you put a lot of love into painting the face the model still looks cool to me. I probably didnt really dislike any of the models in this video that much sure some are meh like nobs but wouldnt stop me from using them.
I'll be the one guy - you won't appreciate the Nob kit unless you build it. It is one of the most versatile plastic kits GW has ever produced, you could build it 10 times and never have an identical Nob, mix in bits from other kits and some minimal chopwork and every one of them will have a unique look. It's a smorgasbord of spare bits which any Ork collector will tell you is a must for a good Ork kit. And, until the new Boyz kit is rectified, it is still the only and best solution to a problem that has plagued the Ork range since the Brian Nelson revamp - Boss Nobs. The one in the 3rd edition kit is too shrimpy to work as a proper Nob, and the new kit's Nob, while better scaled, is a victim of modern GW kit design in that it's going to be a copy-paste across all your mobs with just the occasional weapon swap. A single Nob kit salvages up to 5 Boyz mobs by giving them each a unique, characterful leader that properly stands out from the horde.
my favourite model in my entire ork army is a nob that I built but with a grot's head. It looks absolutely hilarious and I always introduce him as "pea-brain, my mightiest warrior".
Good point! I still never intend to buy one, but that's because I'm going to need to track down a 3d printer already to print all 100 of my boyz, so I can just print bitz to my hearts desire lol.
The grimaldus helmet is especially weird, because in the lore he has a pretty iconic skull helmet, more akin to normal chaplains, so i really dont know why GW went with this design
Yeah I'm not a fan of "human teeth Grimaldus" either, though the design _has_ grown on me a little since I first saw it. The movie design with the Reaver helmet absolutely rocks though.
It's a shame the helmet sucks, since the rest of the model is sweet IMO, I bought the kit just to use the body/legs and made a Judiciar for my Deathwatch army using a Reiver head, greatsword and tempormortis/flail. also there are lots of great other bits in the box I used to kit out my bladeguard squad.
I kinda like the Enginseer being so "normal" for Ad.Mech, because it kinda make sense ? The Magi are your "top HQs" (beside Cawl), so them being so weird and full of character is nice, but it's better when contrasted by "average joes" playing support role. They're Generals and he's just the Captain.
Yeah, enginseer are going out with Astra so I feel like AdMech holds back a little with them. Keep the crazier stuff for guys that will be staying back with the AdMech guys.
I'd like to see a whole unit of them as "tech priest adepts" with a bunch of random tech bits you can stick on them Source: literally what the Mechanicus (video game) tech priests are
I think my problem is that it's kind of not "normal". It's obviously trying to be "more heavily armored battle tech priest". As opposed to a hypothetical _actual_ "normal" tech priest that's a person-sized dude in a robe with mechanical bits peeking out. The Enginseer model looks too heavily armor plated and _thicc_ to be a "normal" tech priest, the likes of which would be found working on basic maintenance. At the same time, it doesn't do the "armored battle tech priest" idea well either. It doesn't go _far enough_ if that's the goal. So it ends up in a weird space where it's too chunky to seem like a standard member of the faction, but not chunky enough to seem like one meant to march into melee. It's the worst of both worlds. What GW needs to do is replace this one model with two models that fill each of those roles better. (And that looks less boring).
29:08 Jokaero may have been included in Rogue Trader as a reference to Discworld, a fantasy series which features a librarian trapped in an orangutan’s body. The first few Discworld books were published in the early 80s, and Rogue Trader came out in 1987.
My thoughts too. It doesn't look like an anti-infantry gun, it isn't for sideways or long-distance targets, it exists to destroy the building in front of it and the scoop helps get the rubble away. They're hating it because they don't understand it.
I love that Eric’s opinion for the doom scythe was that “we have enough bikes” and, during the model wishlist episode he wanted bike models for everyone. 😂
To be fair, the armies that have bikes are like 100% cooler, especially jetbikes. They're mad fun in 30k where you can express ship armourbane into the rear armor profile of a tank.
For Space Marines, I am shocked that neither of you picked the Invader ATV. Astorath the Grim isn't copying Zed from Power Rangers (though that's very funny.) it's copying Dracula's armor from the beginning of Francis Ford Coppola's version in the 90's.
These comments are hilarious because so many of them are “This model wasn’t copying X, it was blatantly copying Y!” And it just forces you to realize how much sci fi stuff is just ripoff city.
In defense of the Vindicator, it's based on WW2 assault gun. Best example I can think of is the Sturmgeschütz (Stug 3), where it's basically an armored tank but has a short-ranged mortar instead of an actual normal tank turret used for bunker busting and accompany infantry during a siege. The Vindicator having a massive shovel here also contributes to that, being able to clear rubbles, wires and such so infantry can advance. The main reason why they made these was because it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to weld a gun to the tank than making the turret. With the turret, you have to take into account the turret ring, and balance the gun since if it's too heavy, it's gonna take 30 mins to just turn the turret.
I don’t know if I’ve ever disagreed with you very much but this Nob opinion seems flawed. It’s my favorite kit in the whole game, so many options and opportunities for customization. It might not look great to you guys but it is the perfect ork kit and I would be sad if it ever got updated. It’s easy to make cool stuff out of the box better than what GW did on the cover.
Astorath's armour is based upon the armour worn by Gary Oldman in Bram Stoker's Dracula from 1992. You know, since the Blood Angels are vampires and all that...
@@nicholasrossano7340 Centurions look badass as soon as you lengthen their legs, torso and neck by 1-2mm each, they got screwed by the dimensions of regular marine sculpts at the time.
Vindicator is actually one of the saner models in the imperial armor category as there is actually quite a lot of armored vehicles in history with guns fixed on the hull (and some of them were very successful designs), although the dozer blade might be too big but I like huge flat surfaces to handpaint things onto. Completely disagree on that part
Yeah I was going to say, like don't a lot of Tank Destroyers not have a turret that rotates? IDK too much about how they are _supposed_ to be used, but I could see the vindicator being used as a very close range bulldozer/tank that basically lets you drive into enemy fortifications, push all of their Czech hedgehogs/concertina wire/barbed wire/barricades out of the way with the plow, and then destroy any fortifications that might be behind with the cannon, like an exterior wall, a building, or a bunker, in the process making an opening for your troops following behind. It's definitely a bit on the uglier side tbh, but it does make sense IMO.
As someone who grow up playing dawn of war: soulstorm I have an implacable love for the defiler. It's so weird, has horrific spikes with grabbing arms and moves like a possesed crab. It's everything a chaos vehicle ought to be.
I'm just going to throw it out there, Soulstorm was the worst of the DoW expansions. Dark Crusade was peak Dawn of War, and defilers were great. Having said that, spamming Khorne berzerkers and possessed was the way to play chaos!
@@TheKingtedd true I did actually mean dark crusade. Playing soulstorm it was clear they had ideas, but they didn't have a chance to finish the game. Plus they didn't have Eliphas the inheritor and his overwhelming baritone.
These kinds of videos really make me realize that I got into 40K around 5th edition, and have just been locked into that edition ever since. The Chaos Spawn, the oldmarines, the Soul Grinder... they all look cool to me.
Similar feels here. Enginseers were one of the coolest things in 40k to me when I got into it (yeah I'm a baby who got introduced to 40k with OG Dawn of War) and I'm being told they're ugly and too simple.
First of all, Old Marines forever. Second, the vindicator is a wonderful tank. The siege shield doesn't make sense without the dangerous terrain rules, but lorewise, this tank is breaching lines and bulldozing fortifications. So the dozer blade sort of makes sense. The nostalgia of blowing up an entire squad of marines in one shot in 6th ed was a real vibe.
As a tau player who loves crisis suits I actually 100% agree. They're too stumpy, if you want the nice long legs they've got in a lot of art you gotta convert them
I can't agree, I absolutely hate the cadre fireblade, the pose is just so not fitting with what he should be wanting to do, and then he also doesn't ream have anything interesting about him, his ritual knife isn't even out of it's sheeth so its profile is way to flat
I have to disagree with your take that the Defiler was "We made the soulgrinder worse". Yes the model is old and hasnt aged well. But calling it a worse soulgrinder is doing it a diservice. Maybe your aware of this already but: The Defiler predates the Soulgrinder, coming out in 3rd edition. The Soulgrinder came out with the first Chaos Daemons codex near the end of 4th. I was in high school then, just getting into the hobby. This model comes from a time when Chaos was just Space Marines but with Daemons on the side. Some say that's still a problem, but at the time the meme of "they're just regular marines with spikes" was the reality. I didn't play chaos for that reason, but I remember the Defiler fondly. At the time its concept was unique and stood out among the rest of the Chaos Marine line up. If you didn't want to run daemons, it was one of the few non-characters you could run, to which the loyalists didn't have an obvious equivilant. On top of that, Apocalypse hadn't comeout yet. The other largest vehicles, w/o forgeworld, were the landraider and the monolith. The big spider tank stood out next to the rhinos and russes. It also was fun to use in the original Dawn of War. So then the Demons come out with their first codex with their new models and heres the Soulgrinder. GW ripped the top off the defiler and slapped on a generic demon torso with a sword and called it a new unit. They made a demon centuar out of one of Chao's few truly unique models. They watered down what made this tank special and the Defiler's been slowly forgotten since. *edited for grammer*
the defiler is iconic for me, one of the first things I spent my money on when I returned to the hobby ( I started when I was a kid and got what I was given). I have two that I cherish and they always come to the big group games as they stand out so nicely, hell I want to mount a lord of skulls on a defiler chasse because I think it looks that awesome
I absolutely loved the Defiler in DoW, it was my favourite chaos unit and tbh i very much preferred them to dreadnoughts. They look slightly goofy, but honestly they are terrifying if you think about it. They had an howitzer, a twin autocannon and even a flamer... not to mention the fact that unlike their bricky counterparts the dreadnoughts, defilers looks like a warmachine instead of a Bobcat excavator with legs and weapons. I can imagine being ambushed by defilers in a cave or high ceiling structure where they are hanging silently on the ceiling like spiders, and next thing you hear is a rattling noise and see a flash. They open fire before dropping down on helpless spacemarines, literally dismembering any living beign they manage. Also Defiler is a pretty dope name when you got those giant ripper claws.
It's interesting how often newer players (people who took up 40k in the past ten years or less) seem to HATE older sculpts. As someone who was basically hooked into the game in the 90s by the firstborn marines, it's baffling to hear someone say the old style is ugly since that's the model I see in my head when someone says "40k".
They should have been much lower, much faster. I know these guys have been playing 40k for all of 10 minutes, but its weird how wrong they are about basically everything.
Ngl, old Orks look better than new Orks to me. Like new Orks are okay, but old Orks have just so much personality to them. The Nob kit is great imo, every bit feels unique. I especially like the exhaust pipe snorkler head, I've used it to kitbash two meks as well as on my Nobrunt (Nob on Runtherd body) Lootas are also so freaking cool I genuinely dread a range update, they'll take away all our options and force us to have rank and file monopose sculpts where each kit has just one or two build options, all while making the boxes more expensive too I hope they just update Tankbustas and the resin characters and leave it at that
This, I want an updated Multipart Boyz kit...not being forced to use the new monopose one and having strict requirements of what is in each mob of 10...It's already a pain in the ass to covert the new monopose kits into a full 9 Slugga Boyz + Nob...
I agree about the Nobs. I think that people who don't collect Orks understand how the kits, used to at least, work. The Nobs are good but the kit is great. Gave you all the options you needed for all the Nobz throughout the army. If you also have some Meganobz and maybe a few extra nob sized Orks, you can swap heads and equipment all day long. It was very easy to make every Ork unique. These days I don't really mind a bit of redundancy on troop models so after collecting too many Orks I traded my Slugga Boyz but kept all the Shoota Boyz from the newest Boyz kit. So I have repeats, but a full squad and since they'll mostly be in a trukk or hiding in cover it doesn't bother me.
So the Vindicator is really designed to bring down fortifications. It's a siege tank. It doesn't really need to aim much, you just point it at a bunker The dozer blade is so it can push through whatever rubble remains of the thing you pointed it at As a main battle tank sharing a list with stuff like Gladiators and Predators it does look a bit out of place, and the rules don't really match what it's supposed to be for. But the design does make sense
There were lots of tanks with hull mounted guns like the vindicator irl. Look at the German Sturm Tiger, Brumbar, Stug, or the Swedish strv 103. It’s also not uncommon to mount dozer blades on tanks irl. Always seemed like one of the more believable units seeing as how the imperium always had a kinda ww2 aesthetic.
@@darthkek1953 This, the Vindicator is quite clearly taking inspiration from the german artillery line of World War 2 that is the Brummbar and the Sturmtiger. Heck it even borrows a little bit from the ones you mentioned, the Stug and the STRV 103. Heck it even takes a bit of inspiration from the Centurion AVRE with the 'dustbin' spigot launcher. It is, when you realize that WH40k is basically "World War 2, in space", makes whole lot of sense. The Leman Russ, for example, if you know anything about tanks, is a shockingly bad design with only 180mm of RHA frontal armor according to the Imperial armor books (which is literally World War 2 levels of RHA, modern battle tanks have 900mm+, we know its RHA because the Land Raider is listed in the same book as having about the equivalent of 300mm of frontal armor and it says "300mm of steel plating", which is RHA) and it's terrible boxy design. It screams 'interwar tank fuckery" as it's clearly a mashup of the old British MkIVs and the Char B1.
Would like another one of these reviewing which model kits from each faction are the easiest to assemble. As a new guard player, would have love to hear the older players opinion on assembling the basilisk.
This is a great idea, I'd definitely want to put out feelers to the community to see which kits we should look into/remember our experiences with. I am adding this to our episode idea list!
Stompa is legit incredibly painful to assemble because the instructions in the box...are actually wrong...and they've never been updated them. You have to go online and look for updated instructions to assemble the model correctly. Discounting forgeworld stuff, the Stompa is my pick for 'worst model to assemble'.
To be fair on the Sunshark, the reason they dont need cargo for bombs is because the weapon they mounted in place of the cargo bay is a plasma bomb fabricator. It uses the ship's reactor to generate energy bombs to drop them.
The one Tyranid unit I dislike is the Hierophant Bio Titian. It looks like they couldn't decide if they wanted to make an even bigger worm/snake thing. or something with legs and decided to split the difference. They put legs on a fat snake or maybe the snake ate whatever had the legs and then took the legs for itself. I wish they'd have gone with either giant crab or giant spider. or just gave us an even bigger Mawloc. Addition: I also understand the barbed gaunt. I think when I get my hands on some I'mma kitbash them to that the barblauncher(maybe thing gaunt biovores) might be latched onto/digging into their back. I kinda wish they'd play more with how the nids bio weapons were attached to or part of the nids. more of them straight up arm replacements or burrowed into the back or abdomen of their host or maybe like a second head growing outta their chest who's entire job is to just hawk acid lugies towards some poor guardsman.
You got put yourself in 2004 when Defiler dropped and looked nothing like any previous plastic model in the game. It was glorious. Sadly, it's now long overdue for an update
5:39 Have you guys heard of casemate gun mounts on combat vehicles (such as on the Sturmtiger which the Vindicator is based on)? That's literally what they do.
As a Black Templar player, I would have picked the Neophytes in the Primaris Crusader Squad. They aren't really bad, they just kinda look like football players with bowl cuts.
When I was a kid, Dark Angels Company Veterans were literally the coolest thing I had ever seen. I still like them, but they are definitely in need of a tune-up
That kit was mind-blowing when it came out... over 15 years ago. I had my own chapter but I was excited to get that sprue and the Black Templars upgrade when they came out for the awesome bits. Back then, special weapons and power swords were hard to come by.
If Eric was gonna pick a forge world Custodes model the fact that he overlooked the Two hideous flyers to pick on my adorable baby boy the Telemon just shows his lack of taste.
Not the most powerful anymore infuriatingly. It's weaker than the main gun on the repulsor executioner and equal with the gladiator lancer, because GW just can't stop making primaris fancier at the expense of firstborn
@@michaelmastriano7566 oh yes, the vindicator gets D6+3 and blast, while the others only get 2, but they instead get more rerolls, higher chance to hit, better range, better AP, and 1-4 more damage per shot. A vindicator is still great with its save, and being able to just hurl S14 shots at anything that moves, but it's too expensive and it becomes a priority target to destroy. I've never had a vindicator get past turn 2, and the heavy lifting is instead done by my devastators
@@greg_mca all fair lol. I just got a vindicator and I'm in the middle of painting it. Even got it magnetized so I can make it a rhino if I need one, because rhinos are free

The best part about how old and bad the Swooping Hawks are is the fact that their main bodies are now *26* (edited) years old, but their wings have been used since the ROGUE TRADER era. That's the 80's, baby. Almost 40. Good pick.
Actually I misspoke on the bodies, they're 98 not 94 like I thought so 26 not 30. But the wing designs are indeed from 87, they just cut them in half in the "new" kit so that they can be angled
Maybe I'm losing it, but I thought all the aspect warrior sculpts (sans shining spears and warp spiders) got updated with the 4e codex? The bodies, at least.
I work at a hobby store you guys have referenced in the past, and we've had a vindicator sitting around too for ages. Its been a kit that I've never seen it get bought.
I don't know about this exact angle, but I like the general idea of it. We'll add it to the idea list. We did a 9th edition specific one near the end of the edition if you haven't seen that yet. The comments of that episode had some other great ones.
@@akumaking1 This is one we've talked about doing repeatedly, a problem is a lot of 3D print designers don't like being in GW's view and don't appreciate being shown off on videos where we say the quiet part out loud: "This is clearly meant to be purchased instead of the proper GW item." It's a topic I very much want to cover, but covering it right without upsetting some very talented people is basically impossible so it may be forever in the idea list.
@@ASpooneyBard Probably because GW don't care enough about Catachans to bother paying the 'Eavy Metal team to paint them again. Especially since they have so many other NEW models that need to be painted. GW likely intends to wait until however long it takes for them to put out new Catachans (that they can charge more money for).
Agreed. I have some freshly put together and awaiting paint, and all I can say is they look actually pretty good...a little over the top, but still unpainted they look 100x better than that paint job.
5:11 in defense of the vindicator there are real world equivalents of this such as the Churchill AVRE or Centurion AVRE, and the Brummbar or Sturmtiger. Blowing bunkers up with mobile artillery pieces and being able to clean up a path through the rubble is a real-world application.
Just so you guys know, tau empire covers the section that the tyranids should be in in the lil topic name section of the time bar thingy (I hope this was readable)
Also, the reason why the locus has that "wise dude" sort of vibe is cuz hes supposed to be the silent bodyguard type, who goes melee sicko mode when his ward is in danger
I thought it came across really well. He reminds me of Salazar's bodygaurds in RE4, you just know there's an inhuman murder machine beneath that cloak, the tail poking out also informs this. I appreciate the simplicity too, rare in GW sculpts these days.
I understand that you couldn't pick vespid, but for such a cool idea, the sculpt is an incredible whiff. Those bars on the bomber do give me the ick, though
The drones attached to the wings of T'au bomber seems very logical to me. If the bomber is chased by enemies and any fighter can help him, he can undock his two drones and send them chasing the enemy while he fly away to safety 😉
"Sanguinary Guard are bad" I felt a murderous rage flow through me. If only he had held off until recent announcements, then it would've been appropriate.
I think people who are into historical military armor would actually like the vindicator cause I know I do The big dozer blade was used on many rear echelon and engineer corps vehicles for construction The mortar is very on the nose for many ww2 vehicles It’s honestly one of the most feasible vehicles in warhammer
I was horrified when I came back to warhammer after nearly 20 years and saw what they did to the Wolfen. Look up the origional art for the 13th company in the Black crusade. That ART IS AMAZING! yes the moddels don't 100% capture it, but they are terrrifying. These things look sodding radiculus.
Still watching. Choas Spawn is another terrible example. The old sapwn were amazing! The looked like a tumer with teeth. You are Correct. As a Genestealer cuts player, Sanctus is terrible and I will never buy it. He looks like a daft children cartoon villan.
You're correct, the Techpriest Engineseer is from the IG range. The worst part is that the ugly plastic kit replaced a pair of better proportioned metal models. The Primaris Psyker is a named character from Blackstone Fortress (Aradia Madellan) that they rereleased to replace the FineCast psykers.
The only reason I bought chaos spawn kit was because you have so much bits that you can use for conversion, thats the only thing that justify the purchase for me
Love the videos guys, I don't play Warhammer or collect the miniatures but I'm a massive fan of the 40k lore and novels. I always stick a PH video on whenever I've doing some chill gaming, can't wait to see how the channel evolves!
The funniest thing about the indicator is that this thing basically existed irl in the form of the Sturmpanzer or Stug, including some variants I believe with bulldozers for pushing through fortification.
I love the T'au crisis suits, I really hope they never get updated to the more rounded look of the Ghostkeel or Farsight. Stubby boxy guys are great, bonus points if they have a big railgun but those kits cost a lot more.
The Telemon just looks like the "fuck you, here's a juggernaut that'll obliterate the one thing I point it at this turn" kind of model. Which is by no means a bad thing, it's like if you see a WE player bring Angron or a Guard player bring a Baneblade. You know whatever's in its way is _screwed_ beyond compare, and you kinda just have to accept that.
I really wish they had a unique Thousand Sons hellbrute, but instead of the tentacles give it tendrils made of a mix of sand, warp lightning and shattered glass and the head bit replaced with just a hole filled with a swirling junji ito esque spiral teeth hole.
Having finished my Screamer-Killer about 20 minutes ago, I think it's an incredibly clever and beautifully tyraniddy sculpt. Raveners though? Not so much.
I get the feeling that Eric and I have a pretty different playstyle, but his model picks are bang-on. Lilith needed a facelift yesterday, the desolation marines stole Ork weapons, and the Inquisition kill team was a major letdown. Great content!
Screamer killer is such a cool model from the neck down, if they made the head look more like the Norn Assimilator with the head surrounded by a chitin shell itd look so much better imo
Yeah, the gw built ones on the front of the kit look pretty boring, but when you actually build it, the kit is full of options, big chainsaw axes, fun decorations and a little guy! Them saying theat nobz are ugly actually gave me the impulse to write an angry comment for the first time😅
18:54 Your argument is invalid Brad. That model retails for just shy of $100. And it somehow does NOT include THE ARMS at that price. It is horrendously ugly and overpriced.

The Defiler is the model that got me into 40k and drove me toward Chaos. I still love the dumb crab mech way more than any of the later daemon engines. And he’s way cooler than the Soulgrinder (which was created after the Defiler)
Good video; for the sake of engagement, I'll note my main disagreement, even though you kinda gave the matter a pass: I actually think that the drones slotting into the Sunshark is a relatively clever design. It's like omnipods in Battletech: the drones can hypothetically provide different functions, like additional markerlights, more guns, or shield enhancement, and just having the drone docks makes for good interoperability. That's not actually reflected by the game rules, but, yanno, hypothetically. Full agree on Catachans, but given that they are sometimes described as discount Ogryn by uncharitable in-universe sources, there's some amusement to be derived from considering them to be the version at home of another of the most terrible models in Guard.
Warning this is my rant about your opinion on the vindicator. The vindicator is not based on the sturmtiger, it’s based on every single assault/siege fighting veichle. It’s a stormpanzervogn. It’s meant to be an infantry support unit and if you look at stug 1-3 and panzerkampfvagen 1-4 with the short gun it’s the same. It’s a short barrel that fires a large caliber explosive round aka large anti infantry round. It makes perfect sense. We even have bulldozer style attachment for tanks to clear mines and debris. The vindicators only weakness is the shitty ww1 British tank track design and large flat panels at a 90 degree angle that offers 0 protection from an AT round.
I can already list them off for my faction(s): Space Marines goes to the old firstborn models that needed updates 20 years ago. Shit like Ezekiel, Sanguinor, or Sanguinary Guard or any of their 90's era stuff is atrocious (aside from the Box Dread, that thing was glorious). I can also see why the Desolation Marines are considered the ugliest by some people, but that's mostly because of their wack-ass guns, not their overall sculpting. And even then, the missile launchers can be fixed in a myriad of ways. Knights is EASILY the Acastus Asterius. Something about that bulbous frame and teeny-tiny head _really_ doesn't look right, and its weird sideways-facing elbows are absolutely ridiculous. It does not look like it can hold up any of its guns without its thin-ass arms snapping. Weirdly enough, the version used in Adeptus Titanicus actually looks good. I have no idea what exactly changed, seeing as how a side-by-side comparison yields no significant differences between the two, but it just looks _better_ somehow.
Going for Junith Eruita for Sisters, when the obvious answer is the Repentia Squad with it's "two handed swords being swung around whithout having a firm stand"-poses is wild. More than half the models look like they are only a second away from losing balance and even for an over the top setting like 40k the swords are comically too big.
This is the same problem that the sisters of battle have. Whoever they have painting faces is no good at making anything that isn't grizzled and masculine. The sculpts are actually beautiful under that official paintjob.
A rubric dreadnought held together by whispy dust would actually unironically be the coolest thing ever, I’m now angry it’s not a thing. Hopefully whenever chaos starts getting the redemptor clones.
I stilll remember when i was first getting into 40k and playing dawn of war, one of the big standout models for me was the Defiler for Chaos. I might buy a defiler to spite yall lol

"Robes hide all the things that make them unique" Robes are one of the main Dark Angels aesthetics lol. Tbf, these guys are barely into 40k (often not knowing basic elements of the lore/fandom/model-range), so probably shouldn't take anything they say seriously.
"Kill-Team Cassius is just boring" Except it's literally one of the most diverse and unique set of sculpts within the Space Marine range, and 40k as a whole... It's like they live in bizzaro world.
As someone who is painting Serberys Raiders while I listen to this, I think you definitely gave AdMech an easier time than they deserve. AdMech models have engineering problems that undermine how nice the average player is going to be able to make them look. There are, like, four sprue connection points happening in areas of detail in the middle of my cyberhorse's face. There's a wire on each side of its head that is only modeled from the side view. The rider's cape becomes illogically deep at the bottom, which is a real problem for an object that is a different color on each side. Almost every piece calls to be painted as its own subassembly even if you're only shooting for accurate color separation. There are some great painters and modellers out there but a couple of the more nuanced AdMech really push the point that a detailed 3D model isn't the same thing as a good miniature.
The War Thunder players all took the day off from leaking government blueprints to remind me that the ugly sci-fi tank is based off an ugly real life tank as though that somehow fixes the fact that it's ugly. Thank you for your comments though, don't be shy!

S1 tank, is the epitome of "aim with the whole tank" design.

It looks a bit like he’s got big metal mouth braces. Yeah, it’s weird.
The weird part is that his old mini had a less derpy helmet that was more in line with the cover art for Helsreach.

@@joshy7759 Kill team with tech priests, servitors, skull servitors and something would be so cool!

For Space Marines, I am shocked that neither of you picked the Invader ATV. Astorath the Grim isn't copying Zed from Power Rangers (though that's very funny.) it's copying Dracula's armor from the beginning of Francis Ford Coppola's version in the 90's.

W40k is just a massive rip-off universe @@aLime404
@@lordofshades9852 The Invader would have been my first pick! Which space marine mini is the worst in your opinion?

The nobs were what got me into making minis not according to the box instructions back in the day. Such good kits.

That’s why I like the Horus Heresy version. Still has the blade and shield but it’s more subtle.

God I hate stock crisis suits so much. "It's a fast light mech with too many guns. How do we represent that on the table? A brick of course!"

I genuinely dread a range update, they'll take away all our options and force us to have rank and file monopose sculpts where each kit has just one or two build options, all while making the boxes more expensive too
I hope they just update Tankbustas and the resin characters and leave it at that
Completely agree
This, I want an updated Multipart Boyz kit...not being forced to use the new monopose one and having strict requirements of what is in each mob of 10...It's already a pain in the ass to covert the new monopose kits into a full 9 Slugga Boyz + Nob...
Ive always thought the 2nd Edition boyz were the sauce....they make modernized sculpts of those and I think I found my third army
I really don't like their round new pig noses.
The pointy vertical slit seemed bit better

So the Vindicator is really designed to bring down fortifications. It's a siege tank. It doesn't really need to aim much, you just point it at a bunker
The dozer blade is so it can push through whatever rubble remains of the thing you pointed it at
As a main battle tank sharing a list with stuff like Gladiators and Predators it does look a bit out of place, and the rules don't really match what it's supposed to be for. But the design does make sense
The dozer blade is the only part that doesn't make sense. The way it's set up would push debris into the gun.
Sturmtiger. It's a literal anti-fortification gun, so it doesn't need to be a turret and it doesn't need range.
@@darthkek1953 "anti-fortification"
_Imperial Fists hate this _*_one_*_ trick!_
@@LordCrate-du8zm Aren't they proud and eager to be tested?
Definitely cooler than most of new hover crafts
Would like another one of these reviewing which model kits from each faction are the easiest to assemble. As a new guard player, would have love to hear the older players opinion on assembling the basilisk.
I just assembled one and it is so bad, there are so many large gaps underneath and a ton of sprue glue to put it together
the instructions are legitimately wrong, find the old ones online
This is a great idea, I'd definitely want to put out feelers to the community to see which kits we should look into/remember our experiences with. I am adding this to our episode idea list!
@@thepoorhammerpodcast Damn Im honored to played a part in your creative team.
I remember when it came out, along with the Cadians and Catachans got their first round of plastic.
I still think the Defiler looks good.
Vindicator is a hot take of such proportion I do not know what to say. Eternally one of my favorite models. (Love you both, keep having takes please)
The Defiler is one of my all time favorites, I have 4 of them...
I love the defiler too. Unfortunately I only have 2 for my word bearers army...

I absolutely love the defiler. there is just so much sovl going on with it.
I'm sorry lol

Have you guys heard of casemate gun mounts on combat vehicles (such as on the Sturmtiger which the Vindicator is based on)? That's literally what they do.
As a Black Templar player, I would have picked the Neophytes in the Primaris Crusader Squad. They aren't really bad, they just kinda look like football players with bowl cuts.
When I was a kid, Dark Angels Company Veterans were literally the coolest thing I had ever seen. I still like them, but they are definitely in need of a tune-up
They still do the trick and have a lot of good bits I have used them to build a firstborn green wing
That kit was mind-blowing when it came out... over 15 years ago. I had my own chapter but I was excited to get that sprue and the Black Templars upgrade when they came out for the awesome bits. Back then, special weapons and power swords were hard to come by.
I agree they’re not ugly or bad just need an update because you can immediately tell they’re old
If Eric was gonna pick a forge world Custodes model the fact that he overlooked the Two hideous flyers to pick on my adorable baby boy the Telemon just shows his lack of taste.
I KNOW RIGHT
The vindicator is glorious. It's got the most powerful space marine gun and that plow allows it to shoot with no penalty in engagement range
Not the most powerful anymore infuriatingly. It's weaker than the main gun on the repulsor executioner and equal with the gladiator lancer, because GW just can't stop making primaris fancier at the expense of firstborn
@@greg_mca does the vindicator at least get more shots? I thought both of those get 2 shots a piece?

Almost 40.
Good pick.
Seriously? That's wild
Actually I misspoke on the bodies, they're 98 not 94 like I thought so 26 not 30. But the wing designs are indeed from 87, they just cut them in half in the "new" kit so that they can be angled
Reminds me of the old khorne berzerkers. Good old 1994 backpacks.
@@boneman-calciumenjoyer8290 Those backpacks are as old as I am. lol
Maybe I'm losing it, but I thought all the aspect warrior sculpts (sans shining spears and warp spiders) got updated with the 4e codex? The bodies, at least.
I work at a hobby store you guys have referenced in the past, and we've had a vindicator sitting around too for ages. Its been a kit that I've never seen it get bought.
love the podcast. Can we have a episode like a tierlist of the most broken synergies (combos?) in 40k gameplay history?
I don't know about this exact angle, but I like the general idea of it. We'll add it to the idea list. We did a 9th edition specific one near the end of the edition if you haven't seen that yet. The comments of that episode had some other great ones.

The only problem I have with the Catachan models is the paint jobs GW gave them because any other time I've seen them painted, they look great.
The official GW paint jobs of those Catachans look like it was done by someone's cousin, rather than the 'eavy metal team...
Those pictures (not just the model, the promo stills) are over 20 years old. I have no idea why they don't just paint some new ones.

The fact you guys dont know blood angels armor references an old Dracula movie with Keanu Reves infuriates me.
Thanks for the catch, I'll fix it.
I think people who are into historical military armor would actually like the vindicator cause I know I do
The big dozer blade was used on many rear echelon and engineer corps vehicles for construction
The mortar is very on the nose for many ww2 vehicles
It’s honestly one of the most feasible vehicles in warhammer
I was horrified when I came back to warhammer after nearly 20 years and saw what they did to the Wolfen. Look up the origional art for the 13th company in the Black crusade. That ART IS AMAZING! yes the moddels don't 100% capture it, but they are terrrifying. These things look sodding radiculus.
Still watching. Choas Spawn is another terrible example. The old sapwn were amazing! The looked like a tumer with teeth.
You are Correct. As a Genestealer cuts player, Sanctus is terrible and I will never buy it. He looks like a daft children cartoon villan.
The OG Sculpts look way better than the new ones
Damn. You two just named some of the most memorable and fan favorite models. Still love you guys.
This podcast is now a crime for dissing the Defiler! THE CRAB MONSTER IS GREAT!
0:50 outlawing any criticism of the sculptors who made the ugly models, even if on spec, is bizarre. I'm out
The Grimaldus helmet would be awesome on a Chaos Space Marine if the teeth are painted as if they were his actual teeth.
You like chaos marines don’t you
You're correct, the Techpriest Engineseer is from the IG range.
I'd appreciate if they just matched the artwork more. They'd feel properly powerful then.
My guy hasn't seen a telemon on the table. It's taller than an Armiger. It towers over everything and it will box you. 📦

TBH my most hated models in all of 40K are the baby carriers, both for Grey Knights and the mini ones for the Sisters.
As an Ork player who’s favorite kit is the Nobz kit, I feel personally attacked 🤣🤣
It's genuinely one of the best kits out there. So many options!
It is horrendously ugly and overpriced.
well, yes, its forgeworld, but they werent factoring in prices, just how models look. and the telemon is so dumb its cool. look at my dreadnought. it is bigger than yours. lol, lmao.
24:44 That "Oh Jesus" is just such a great reaction.
The Defiler is the model that got me into 40k and drove me toward Chaos. I still love the dumb crab mech way more than any of the later daemon engines. And he’s way cooler than the Soulgrinder (which was created after the Defiler)
Honestly when it comes to the defiled i would just take the head off and make it a true giant enemy crab.
They look like purposely roided out Stallone silly.
Actually kinda like the Vindicator :D Might kitbash it for my ork army :)
Finally a properly fitting army to bring that thing to the table.

The entire bit with the jungle fighters had me in stitches. The dude in the front gives the Clarence space marines a run for their money 😂😂😂
Ugliest Necron? The first one I painted.
I can already list them off for my faction(s):
Space Marines goes to the old firstborn models that needed updates 20 years ago.
8:04 this aged poorly considering what we got
Going for Junith Eruita for Sisters, when the obvious answer is the Repentia Squad with it's "two handed swords being swung around whithout having a firm stand"-poses is wild. More than half the models look like they are only a second away from losing balance and even for an over the top setting like 40k the swords are comically too big.
in defense of the Catachans, the official paintjob is most of the problem, give them to good painter and they actually look nice
This is the same problem that the sisters of battle have. Whoever they have painting faces is no good at making anything that isn't grizzled and masculine. The sculpts are actually beautiful under that official paintjob.
i adore the easy kitbash you can do for the desolation squad where you mount the rockets on the powerpacks
Disagree on the vindicator. Something about how StuG like it is fills me with a primal joy.

Let’s not forget that the headlights on the vindicator are pointing directly to the back of the dozer blade thing making them absolutely useless lol
