After watching a dozen videos, this one was by far the easiest to comprehend and apply to a bike I just purchased(gear issues from the retail store’s set up).
Shifting adjustments are why I bought an Archer D1X...saves me so much time and I don’t have to mess with this stuff much (accept on the kiddos bikes) 😀. Another great video!
Straightening the derailleur hanger is one of the most common "repairs" we do at our bike shop! If it's misaligned you can adjust all you want without getting it to shift smoothly.. Awesome vid explaining the basics tho!
I pretty much always check the hanger first. It's bent on half the bikes that come in. After I know that the hanger is straight I can go into adjustments
Also check if teeth, cogs are bent, if there is play in the chainrings, this can happen with riveted chainrings, these things can cause shifting issues, chain might struggle to get up to next cog, it cogs or teeth are bent you might be able use a flat headed screw driver to straighten the teeth and cogs, but it won't be perfect, and you will struggle to do it with the smallest cog, you don't want to mess up the frame or cause harm to your self, but the others you can do it to, but if the cogs have too much play you can't solve this, I've done that with few tens of km on Sunrace 11-50t cassette I used with 32t oval.
You can also tighten and loosen the barrel adjuster until the pulley wheel closest to the sprockets is under the correct gear. Doesn't have to to 100% if it looks right, it is right. If this still causes issues then adjust no more than 2 revolutions either side. If the problem persists, clean your drivetrain and make sure your wheel is on securely. If that doesn't work take it to a bike shop
This quick tutorial has proven inestimably valuable as I've had to adjust quite frequently over the last few Months... One other question: could incorrectly cutting chain length (say a too long chain on a hardtail) mess with the cassette to chainring tension and cause skipping issues?
Not really. It can cause other issues like not frequently dropped chains (too long) or not being able to access the easier gears (too short), but shouldn't affect the shifting. More likely, the cable and housing is worn and needs to be replaced.
More things it cna be: bent rear derailleur, bent cage, worn out pivots in parellogram, it can be is stiff link in the chain. Snapped tooth on cassette, it can be too stiff old lube causing the chain to move slowly and be too stiff. Play in the freehub, causing the cassette to danse. The frame being so flexy the hanger bends during the ride.
Question: Before adjusting the cable at the derailleur bolt, should one set the barrel adjuster to its approximate "middle" of the screw to allow for fine tuning in either direction, yea?
In general, you'll need to tighten the cable over time as the cable and housing wear, so we generally set it about 1 full turn from all the way in as the starting point.
If it's a å wheel with cup and cone bearings you might have play in the hub, causing whole hub to mo e side to side. Then the cones need to be preloaded properly.
I took my bike to a local bike shop for derailleur adjustment and it still wasn't right. Rather than take it back to the young man I took it to a father son shop. It took them an hour to get it sift properly. The problem turned out to be my slightly bent Derailleur Hanger and that was before this crash ;-) th-cam.com/video/x-3GadO7G6g/w-d-xo.html
Cleaning your cassette and chain should be the first step!
Thats exactly what I was thinking
True but tbh. I never had a skipping gear because of dirt buildup.
No

Mine is brand new and when I ride it just slips into any random gear
@@hhhhnhbvutake it to a bike shop

These are really good little shorts. I'm learning a lot from them 😃
This is the clearest explanation I've seen, even though I run single speed, this will be helpful in tuning my friends bikes!
My chain was skipping on lower gears. After I tried your fix, it worked! Im a subscriber now. Love how easy and fast you provide knowledge. ❤

What to do about bent hangers?
@@v4riab1lity77 bent them back or replace with a new onw
Only bend em back if lightly bent because they bend easier second time and may be conpromised after being bent..@@v4riab1lity77

ThankYou, it worked. 😊 Happy New Year!
Having a bent rd hanger is really a problem. It's sometimes impossible to tune with this problem.
Mines bent too, have u tuned yours?
@@RaulLopez-mn5xs I tried, but I found it to be impossible to tune. I ended up buying a new hanger.
@@RaulLopez-mn5xs if it’s severely bent like my friend’s, take off your derailleur and using channel locks bend it back.
Right to the point !
this helped me so much! Thanks!

It is so helpful. Thanks a lot
So much help!
Fixed it with this video 🎉thanks
You saved my derilalier I catully love u
I manage to fix my bike thanks to you ❤
Thanks guys. Your way of explaining was so perfect it clicked!! In my brain lol
First step; check if your drivetrain is worn. If so, adjusting will be a waste of time..
Greetings from a Dutch bike mechanic.
Between you and Calvin from Park Tool, i finally get it!
Tysm 😊
I've just done a 1x upgrade and I completely forgot about the b screw this helped alot
Do you tighten or loosen the b screw?
Awesome explanation can you create a video explaining how to align gear shifts with numbers on gear changer

I'll give it a try. I have a new chain, crankset and rear cassette and am still having issues. My chain broke, which is how I got to this point.

if only half of the cassette is changing well, it's time to align the derailleur hanger ;) never forget this step
I just wanna know what bike that is the colors look awesome
You should see their custom painted bikes !! They are beautiful!!
Nah my derailleur hanger's just bent😂
It looks like this video helped me stop skipping chain
I just talked to a friend about dropping my chain yesterday. Google is all up in my business 😅
bent derailleur hanger , thats my prob
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!:-). SO GREAT AND SIMPLE!!!!! GLORIA DIOS!!!!YOU ARE THE WOAH-MAN!!!!!❤:-)
Hmm useful thx
What do I do if it shifts fine on the stand but when I am on the trail in any of the lower gears it skips teeth and clips all the time? Please help
Check that your cassette isn't loose. Same with your rear wheel.
@@sydfixesbikes I'll have to check that tonight
Might be you bent the teeth at the those cogs.
If it's a å wheel with cup and cone bearings you might have play in the hub, causing whole hub to mo e side to side. Then the cones need to be preloaded properly.
It might be bent rear derailleur, bent cage, twisted cage, worn out parellogram pivots.
Ah thanks basic cable adjustment
I'm...going back to single speed...
Which way do you turn the barrel adjuster to loosen cable tension
You screw it into the shifter.
@@sydfixesbikes so you're saying turn it clockwise
Assuming you're looking at it from the housing side, yes.
What do I do if when I ride my bike and I stand up to pedal it just keeps skipping not gears for just when I Pedal
What’s the “stop”?
You make if sound so easy
I built a sleeper drag truck that was less complicated than these bikes now days.
They all rush through the method I'm almost given up I'm trying to reattach a chain and the pin just kicks in one side but not the other

Good👍
Park Tool made an extremely simple video on this
Clean, then repair
I did all this things but my chain is rattling
This is why I ride fixed gear lol
first step is replace the entire bike and get no groupset
Tips just use a single gear
I don’t have a Derailer on my bike it has gears
Did you guys get all that LOL
Or bent der hanger 🤷🏻♂️
Park tool female version
Like it
Or just buy SRAM.
🙂
Or buy a new hanger
really people need vid for this? ok
:D
