The trick sound effect with the WHATEVER logo was absolute perfection. And the whole fast pause segment was hauntingly familiar. I don't pretend to be good at THPSssssss, heck I gave my PSone copy of THPS3 to a friend at school because it made me motion sick and they had the skating interest to fall in love with it. But I've learned to love this series with time, and delighted to see you're getting to do the same too.
Nice to see you play it for the first time and mostly enjoyed it. For that last bit about the combo system, it gradually fleshes out more and more, reaching it's zenith in either THPS4 or THUG1 depending on who you ask. This is a series near and dear to my heart and my second favorite game franchise of all time! The first seven games, in my opinion, are all really good (one thing you might learn about TH fandom is this aspect is often argued about), and I've replayed each and every one of them at least 30+ times. Last year I replayed and beat the career mode as every character in THPS2 and THPS3. My absolute favorite probably has to go to to either THUG1 or THAW, those games are so good and I have a lot of memories of them. I can't wait to see you continue and review more of the series later on!
Yeah, cause of how drawn out the whole video production has been I've actually played through a LOT of the other games since writing this first script so... Hopefully I can share those thoughts in time 😅
8:41 On N64 and Dreamcast, 180 spin taps aren't possible. Thank god you have the PlayStation version, though the Dreamcast port tops the former any day.
My two favorite levels were the mall and the school. I'm also a bit embarrassed to say that the Roswell alien TERRIFIED me as a kid. It makes like weird noises in this game and it was really unsettling to me! The main character I remember playing as was Private Carerra because you could only unlock her via cheat code and because she was the only playable girl back then and I played this at the age when I started getting really into girls lol. Great video as always, dude! I'm excited to see you go through this series! I also played a lot of American Wasteland (even did a video on that one) but the Underground games are still some of the best!
One thing I think these games lost in the later entries was the way you had to plan your routes for high scores. In the later games it's easy to revert into a manual, just manual, or grind after pretty much any jump and keep the combo going but , especially in this first game, you really had to pay attention to where you could combo to get a competitive high score or if you were competing for the highest single combo score which was fun too.
The first ever demo versions of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 was absolutely amazing. Especially on those mid to early euro demo disc releases, it had different skateboard handling and it was less tweaked, it was different and fun though. With the release of these games, they were far more tweaked to a more acceptable level and they were fun to play. I now own all these games in my collection and i'm very happy with these games, they did so much for the gaming industry and gaming history by introducing new ways to write games involving skateboards with cool real-like physics and that's what made this so cool.
Thinking about it... I have a bunch of PS1 demo discs here... maybe THPS is on one of those! If it is... I doubt I played it at the time but it might be wroth a play some time!
I remember playing and enjoying Underground because it let you create your own skater. Pretty sure that was when I discovered my love for character creators.
I played a few of the later games first myself and let me tell you, playing 1 for the first time was a bit of a humbling experience. I had a pretty similar time with Roswell except I decided to just go to bed and then got my bronze medal the next day instead. But yeah, the Tony Hawk games some of the best around. Just try not plow through them in rapid succession. You'll definitely get burned out because of just how many of them there are.
Seeing somebody fairly unfamiliar with the franchise, discovering it properly for the first time now, is an interesting perspective. Good stuff! Looking forward to seeing what you think of the sequels (for better and for worse...). I definitely agree with your comparisons to 3D platformers too. I definitely draw a fair bit of "level flow" inspiration from these games when working on my own, for that very reason.
Hearing you reaffirm me comparing it to a 3d platformer is very reassuring 😅 But yeah keen to dive into more of these. They are very interesting to me!
Hell yeah! I played the demo of this game and it was amazing! Never played it fully though. My first true THPS experience was number 2, and that was peak Tony Hawk! You'll have a grander time with THPS2!
I have been playing this series since 1999 or 2000 and I stopped using R1 and L1 to spin, you don't need it to get through it, I really always forget about it... I am not an ultrapro or something, I am not as good as playing Underground on Sick 100% without cheats like before, but it's enough to get through and have a lot of fun.
This game was pretty smart for its time; if you try the same tricks/combos one after the other in the competition levels, the game punishes you by giving less and less points each time 😂 which is what made Burnside and Roswell so difficult
Was too busy playing Donkey Kong Country, Crash, Spyro, Pac-Man World, Rayman, Toy Story 2, Destroy All Humans, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank... etc 😅 Glad I can check them out now though!
Our legend has returned.

Great video, I'm sure you'll love watching the series evolve over time!
That's the plan!

Really? That is interesting cause I genuinely didn't know that!
I really enjoyed this video as someone that never played the original game. Can’t wait to see you play 3!
Welcome back pete!
God your intros are so underrated and so good🔥🔥 my favorite part and the most original aspect in a world of video game reviewers!
Thanks! I like having something that really visually pops right at the start of a video 😁
excited for this series bro

Ooh, Tony Hawk! And for the first time too, nice!
Yeah... another one of those old but new to me scenarios 😅
@@Petronious I’ve got plenty of those! It was only a couple years ago I finally watched Lord of the Rings! 😄
🎉 let’s go new Petronious! 🎉
Really great video! Nice editing, and straight to the point. Love to see more of your stuff in the future :D
Thanks very much!
I was happy with how this turned out in the end, so it's reassuring to hear others like yourself say they liked it!
THPS4 was the one I had as a kid, and it's still my favorite to this day. THUG2 is a close second. Great video!
Thanks! Keen to talk about those some day 🛹

Oh yeah, I remember really liking that I could make all sorts of characters in American Wasteland!
I played a few of the later games first myself and let me tell you, playing 1 for the first time was a bit of a humbling experience. I won't tell you just how many of them I've now played since I wrote this video, then! 😅
I’ve heard a lot about these games but I’ve never played them sadly
I genuinely had no idea that the Wall Ride was even in the first game. Wow!
Well I'm glad I'm not the only one realizing that, then!

My guess when you posted the logo was Pro Skater 2 (cause thats what I grew up on as well as THPS3). But any Petronious > no Petronious.
Tbf the Neversoft logo I recreated was the one from THPS2, but I was only going to remake 1 of the Neversoft logos and it had to be that one 😅
Nice neversoft styled intro.
Thanks! It had to be done 👍🛹
@@Petronious Looove them intros.

Grinder* time
Recently tried this on a Dreamcast demo disc. I’m no good at skating games but looks super fun! Definitely gotta give it another shot
I totally forgot a Dreamcast version existed tbh. I shouldn't be surprised because I know Spider-Man got one too.
Loved the video 👍
A comment for the algorithm.

Oh I'll be returning to talk about the shoulder taps in a future video don't worry 😉🛹

Part 2 pls
That's the plan! 👍🛹
Real Life is a 3D platformer if you think about it...
If you think about it enough, even TH-cam is a 3D Platformer...
I prefer the Dreamcast version TBH 🤷
Showoff
🥺can i be a 3D platformer too, mr. 3D platformer 🥺
I think on the inside... We're all 3D platformers, really.
360 shove it
how can you call yourself a gamer of that age and never been into tony hawks lol
Was too busy playing Donkey Kong Country, Crash, Spyro, Pac-Man World, Rayman, Toy Story 2, Destroy All Humans, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank... etc 😅
Glad I can check them out now though!
