Shaba did a decent job with the port. They actually hit a graffiti series of Stanley the alien from Grind Session in the Suburbia level. Making it the only cameo from a rival skateboard game ever to appear in the THPS series.
This was the only version of THPS 3 that I had growing up. To this day I still prefer the PS1 version of the suburbs because we can crush that blue ice cream truck!

My parents unfortunately weren’t too knowledgeable about the differences of the copies. So they saw THPS3 was cheaper for PS1 and bought me this version instead of the PS2. Until much later, this was my only experience to THPS3.
THPS4 brought spine transfers, level-outs, grind extensions, lip extensions, manual pivots, and teleports (like the clock tower grind) to the PS1. The levels are pretty big, career mode is much longer than in the other games, and new types of goals were introduced. It does have its issues, however. The secret level and secret skater are pretty lame, environments aren't destructible, and levels are mostly static (no moving objects or ambient sound effects). I'd still say it's a solid port.

Completing all of the Amateur goals and items per level doesn't unlock more tricks for all of the affected skaters, and 100% completing Career Mode doesn't unlock all of the tricks for all of the skaters to use. Even worse, if you collect decks, it doesn't apply to the custom skaters unless a custom skater is used. If you collect all of the decks with the same custom skater, that custom skater will be the only custom skater to have all of his decks usable. Your reward for doing that is the Visions deck. The custom skaters have no pro challenge, but their ending movie (More Bails) can still be unlocked and viewed. On the flipside, I liked how one-button spine transfers are a thing, as well as ollie boosts to make up for the loss of the wall plant (wall riding boneless) mechanic. Also, THPS4 PSE (and Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX) have the highest music track count in any PS one Activision O2 release. In the former, you started off with 9 officially-licensed music tracks, but collecting the DISCs in the first seven levels adds more music to your collection, with a total of 16 music tracks. In Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX, all 16 music tracks are available by default.
I remember renting a beat up copy of this and beating it as Muska as a kid. Once I got the end movie it wouldn't play proper and every character I played through after that had a bugged Chad Muska movie at the end, good times
btw, just in case nobody mentioned it yet - you can no comply/boneless out of a 50-50, nosegrind, or 5-0 if you rotate 180 degrees beforehand in all the games that use this engine (thps2, thps3, thps4 on ps1). even the GBA and DS games include this "bug" iirc.

This game did get a Nintendo 64 port, but the Control Stick doesn't rotate the camera, and Freelook has been gutted from that version due to this. Not to mention the N64 port is the last Tony Hawk game released on that platform, as well as the last officially-licensed N64 game.

PS1 College is very much stateable with some good lines, plus the clock tower grind remained intact from the 6th gen versions. The level is certainly lifeless in that version, however.

I have never played this version. I have only ever played it on GameCube. I think now with the knowledge we have on 3D modeling we can push the PS1 graphics a bit more. I'm sure back then, they were not modeling cost efficiently. using 4 or even more vertices per poly. I bet someone could remake this games assets now and double the performance with better modeling.

I had this version. Didn’t know it had a different version for ps2 at the time. I got it for Xmas when I was a kid. Only had the ps1 and N64 in 2001.

I love every ones unique experiences with the series. I played the first 3 exclusively on N64. And played every game since 4 on the PS2.

Absolutely garbage version of THPS4... its literally lifeless
PS1 College is very much stateable with some good lines, plus the clock tower grind remained intact from the 6th gen versions. The level is certainly lifeless in that version, however.

That was Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4. When you’d get every gap on every level, including the mini practice level, the Neversoft message would appear.
