- Which is the oldest temple structure in South India? In 2004, a massive tsunami uncovered stone inscriptions that led to the discovery of what is believed to be the oldest temple structure in South India today - the Saluvankuppam Murugan temple in Mamallapuram. While there are many more ancient places of worship, those early temple structures no longer exist.
