  • With a little more time on his hands, Adam is continually working on projects in his workshop. Some of those projects are building out the Cave's infrastructure. We stop by to check out his newest glue shelves, which are made from old airplane food service trolleys! Here's how the refurbished rolling carts radically increases Adam's efficiency in the shop!

Noticed Adam was having a bad hair day. Makers don't care about bad hair days when they're having good paint cart days.

I'd love to just sit in his workshop watching him work, cos everything Adam does is fascinating, whether it's building a box or turning a rather mundane item, such as them airline food cabinets, into a really useful storage facility for his tools, he needs his own TV show where he just builds stuff, from models to, well, the sky's the limit I guess... :D

A hospital supply place next store to my office was moving to a new location and they brought in a dumpster to get rid of stuff they didn't want to move. Lots of shelving, out of date medical supplies ect. The best thing though was the nurses carts. Constructed of aluminum with keys to the drawers. So many they couldn't fit them in the dumpster so they were just lined up by the dumpster waiting each week for the garbage truck to come. My friends and I would come by with our pickup trucks and relieve them of all the cart goodness once a week. I guess we could have sold them but instead we used the broken ones for aluminum for projects and I still have quite a stash. I also kept some of the carts for storage of race car parts, paint supplies and basic shop tools. I have one just for welding, one for bodywork ect
Great if you can find them.

Great job on the point of use cabinet. I spent over 20 years in manufacturing with a Japanese company. The method they used for organization was similar. One thing that helps on clean up. Any place you will have an over spill of glue, put a small tray with a thin layer of oil. The glue solidifies on the surface and is easily removed.

Every time I see a glimpse of Adams shop, I feel really jelly. If I was to purchase even get a fraction of the items in his shop, It would probably cost me a second and third mortgage. lol. Granted, now it seems like all you need is a proper cnc router, 3D printer, air brush and a bunch of small electrical gadgets, like the teensy arduino, and you can probably make almost any basic prop.

I've started to use lazysuzans (is that how to pronounce that word?) underneath nearly all cubbordspace and hard to reach places. If I have to go around a shelf or it is in a cubbord to see it all, I'll usually try to fit a lazysuzan in it. For example: I have all my deturgents in a cubbord under the sink. It was annoying to take everything out when i wanted to find just one thing and things were falling, so i put a few buckets underneath (and underneath the buckets some beads in a vat) so now i can twirl everything around and it is easy to lift a single group of detergents away if I want to :) I am also considering building rotating cubbords for shoes, clothing etc. basically for the bigger stuff :)

I wonder if he has or has considered lining the bottom of the drawers with silicone food mats seeing as how most adhesives don't bond to silicone. That way if there is a spill or leak it will be more contained mass instead of a blob stuck to the bottom of the drawer that needs solvent to be removed. Just a thought.

Pro tip: you want to try this on a budget? IKEA sells little vertical drawers like that, roughly the same size. The casters don't have breaks and they're not as robust, but I use one and it works well enough. IKEA lends itself to hacking so there are options for reinforcement if needed.
