- Is Gorilla hot glue stick is best? Gorilla, Stanley, Arrow, Folote, Elmers, Ad Tech, and Surebonder all get put to the test for tensile and shear strength on wood and tensile strength on PVC/plastic. The PVC was left unsanded to help represent how well these glues stick to a smooth surfaces, such as glass, plastic, high gloss painted surfaces. I like your video's. But this test method is rubbish. Some test you increase the tension fast and with some slow. Hot glue stays a little bit soft so it will release with half the tension if you wait a few seconds...

Yea, I had no idea. I build custom furniture and use wood glue all the time but had no idea hot glue was this strong. Hot glue just makes me think of my mom when I was a kid using it for her crafts lol.

@@staceyfisher1479 Right? Consumer Reports might have their test rigs and give results in newtons, but guys - I don't work in newtons and I'm not working on test rigs. I AM using SPF two-bys, I AM used to working in pounds. These are results I can relate to.
i think now the only way he could improve would be to somehow create double blind testing but the way he is setting up the tests he does maintain a great level of integrity.
Often times when I watch your videos I think "Boy am I glad someone out there is willing to do such tedious tasks for the greater good"

That is correct as the one your son made is American made! Not done by third world sub contractors who cut every corner to make their lives easier. Remember folks these are the one who construct the buildings and homes that every time a high wind or heavy rain comes through. That all their work is completely leveled.

Was just going to comment that, I've avoided using it in many cases because i thought it wasn't very strong and wouldn't last. I'll probably use it next time after seeing this video.
The shear test was mostly a test of the strength of the wood.
The cabinetshop I work at uses 3m hot glue all the time to put cabinets together but I will definitely have to give surebonder 220 watt glue guns a try because 3m glue sticks are expensive. The hot glue works way better than wood glue when your doing particleboard and sometimes plywood now for the face frame which is where all hardwoods are used we do use wood glue.
I love how you try to eliminate any factor that may help or inhibit the products you test. Your tests are really impressive and by far the most helpful on youtube!

Never been a fan of Gorilla glue or Elmer's really. Seems they leverage the name cause it once meant quality. Not these days. I've had better results with Loctite. I'll have to try the Stanley glue sticks I've used the Gorilla brand for a few years now and not really impressed.

Hot glue performance highly depends on the surface temperature on which you are applying it to. A layer applied to a surface hot enough to melt the glue on his own will be 10 times as durable as a normal application on a cold surface. Of course cleanliness and roughness matters too. I use it to pull out dents. If you get the surface hot and you put the sticks on it to melt it is incredible how strong it can be.
Same. I always carefully prep the surfaces and clean using a solvent. I then preheat the item using a heat gun. The glue flows better and (I believe) makes better contact at a smaller level leveling itself on the surface. The downside is that it takes longer for the bond to set.

I’m literally trying to use a PDR dent puller kit and i have to buy glue sticks because what came in the kit SUCKS. Now i’ll try to hit my panels with a heat gun before I lay the glue. What glue sticks do you recommend??

Probably depends on the materials being glued.
He only tested very short-term loading for ~2 seconds. They all will fail at 1/10th and below the numbers PF got if you just leave 1/10th of the load on there for more than a few seconds. Just think about it this way: If you hit the test pieced with a hamer, nothig is going to happen. But at the moment of impact the force is much bigger than everything we saw in this test. But very short (aka dynamic) loads are simply not comparable to constant loads.
@@leocurious9919 These were also tested in the most ideal conditions possible with perfectly clean, perfectly fit components. A lot of hot glue applications involve random, uncleaned things mashed together.
@@LagMasterSam Temperature also play a very important role in hot glue bonds. Too cold: they snap. Too hot: they melt.
Thanks, Todd! This is a really great video! A technique that I use when screwing 2 boards together is to drill a hole in the top board just large enough for the screw to pass through. This ensures that the screw only screws into the bottom board and the pieces pull tight. Without the hole, the screw threads into both pieces, sometimes leaving a thread or two between the two that can’t be tightened out.

Great video from Project Farm as always! I watched this video about 4 months ago, until then I thought hot glue was strictly for gluing pinecones together for holiday decorations, haha. I own a custom woodworking shop and I use my hot glue gun practically every day now. From making light duty custom jigs fast, holding things together till I can get some screws in, and making cardboard boxes to ship my finished products. I really had NO idea how strong this stuff was. Thanks!!

Man you are a hidden gem. You really go out of your way to do these testing.Multiple samples for each product, tries to eliminate as much unknowns, even bought 5 hot glue guns to prevent glue cross contamination; furthermore, video records, narrates and does calculus for us all with clarity. Trust me I see you hard work you put in as I a biomedical engineer who had to do a lot of tedious testing. Keep it up I love your videos.

So what you're saying is we should be using hot glue instead of construction adhesive.

Even if the strength is the same in some instances, you have to consider the fact that the hot melt glues are going to lose their strength at certain temperatures. Maybe when they get cold, they won't hold as well. Obviously, if they get too warm, they are going to get weaker. And if the load on them comes at an angle, the attachment is weakened.
I tried making a license plate mount for the inside of my windshield that consisted of four 1/4" bolts (1/2" long) that were mounted to the glass by hot melt glue. The heads of the bolts had been surfaced on a lathe to remove the markings and to give a uniform surface. They did not stay attached very long and I eventually switched to small suction cups. These might come lose a couple of times each year, but it's a simple matter to reattach them. I mount the front license plate inside the glass where the rear view mirror is located on my Jeep because it blocks the sun that is not blocked by pulling down the sun visors.

not really, over time of heat vs cold normal hot glue changes structure and will release from smooth surfaces. HOWEVER, there are High temp glue guns in the 400degree F heat range, which I wish was tested as well.
Hot glue may set too fast for sure applications. But there use is more then just art deco.

Hot damn, I've always been under the impression that hot glue is a pretty weak adhesive. I never really thought or trusted that it was capable of holding more than maybe ~5lbs, but your testing clearly and definitively demonstrates that it can be literally hundreds of times stronger than I would have ever imagined. The wood tensile strength results and even the Stanley PVC results were really quite astonishing, my mind was blown 🤯

Correct temperature glue gun is a must, not all sticks are made to work with the same temperature.
2 things are required. Correct temperature of the adhesive at application, too low and it wont bond properly because the bonding agents wont be activated , too hot and those agents will actually get burnt and not work correctly at all. The second is sufficient pressure to cause the adhesive to go into the surfaces to be bonded. Too little pressure and the adhesive just sits and cools at the surface and doesn't actually grab a hold of anything. There are many different industrial hot glues that make this stuff look like little kids' paste.

It would be nice to see a hot glue experiment for various crafting materials, too - especially cardboard and foam board. Many crafters use these materials to create diy's in a pinch due to their versatility and ease of use (ie small card/foam board organizers, storage containers, pet furniture, etc ).

Great Video. It has been my experience that sometimes a hot melt bond can be improved by heating the material you are gluing together, as hot as is reasonably possible. Sometimes it makes a large difference in how well it sticks.

nothing impresses me more than the hot glue from 3M that i used in the aerospace industry. it was used for a looped canvas material to be attached to aluminum core to be expanded. for typical store bought products, stanley is a nice surprise.

im not sure anymore if that was the glue but looks similar in the 1" x 3" size. never knew that glue gun was $1000. i knew the cnc machines i used were an easy 1/4 million.

I have a glue gun and some elmers glue sticks I had no idea they could do this well I used them for some flightest,foamboard airplanes

Agreed but as most glues don't bind to pvc it's likely designed to work with pvc. Either way it's kind of nice to know a glue that will work with pvc to that extent.

I can vouch for Stanley hot glue eyes closed. With a couple of friends we wondered if you could keep a car's body panels attached for long periods of time using nothing but hot glue. So we assembled a Kia POP that way (we even closed shut the hood) and that car ran for 4 years under heavy abuse until the engine gave up.
Once again Master Farm, it's your pre prep and ingenious ways you find to fairly test all the products on your vids. Brilliant.

... it happened to my hand while misoperating a hot melt applicator hose ... didn't have a camera to record it, but won't do it again ... cure is to apply cold water immediately and DO NOT try to remove hot glue from skin ... leave it until it gets loose by itself (after a few days)

I am glad you tested this line of products, it has been very useful to me when making a glue stick purchase! Try keeping the miter saw on with one hand and feeding 2 by stock in with the other. No waiting for saw brake to release and blade to spin up. Pro carpenter tip.

If your gonna use that stuff to pull dents out of a vehicle, don't use Stanley (you weren't supposed to pull the bloody doors off)

I have seen a few videos on pdr. I found it interesting that there are hot glues with different amounts of pull strength. Those guys can decide if they want to pull a small dent or "pull your doors off".

Nice video. I didn't learn much from the tests on wood joints, I used some hot glue about 40 years ago on some framing for a wall I was putting in to divide my basement. I don't remember what brand it was, but 40 years later, that framework was still together and we ended up sawing it into pieces as the glue was still holding it all together. We also used it to attach carpet to the lower part of a wall, and even 40 years later, a blob of it the size of a quarter was able to hold over 400 pounds (both a friend and I were hanging from it without it showing the slightest sign of tearing loose) with ease. The Stanley's performance on PVC was shocking, and it will be the brand I buy from this point forward. I had given up using hot glue on PVC a long time ago.

Volume deliver over larger areas (eg not loosing heat when doing longer runs - say 4 feet)

I use hot glue for pulling dents on my vehicles (released easily with Isopropyl Alcohol).
Didn't realize how much the different brands vary in tensile strength. Something to bear in mind!

I wonder how these hot glues would hold up after a year of being left alone under various environmental conditions? Such as hot or cold, dry or humid, inside or outside, dark room or sunlit room. Also I noticed someone else in the comments say they wished that high temperature hot glues had been tested as well. Maybe we can get a separate video for those? But exposed to rain or extreme temps variations? The bond weakens. Although the glue as a filler stays good
That greatly depends on what the material you have used. For instance, hot gluing fabric to wood, or to fabric - the bond is amazingly strong. As a general rule, gluing items to wood makes a very strong bond. I built a miniature lizard enclosure for some cool hard rubber lizards I found. The only glue that would hold the acrylic to the wood structure, without off gassing potentially fogging the interior, was hot glue. That was roughly 5 years ago. It has seen suffocating heat, high humidity, and cold to down around 45F. Still holding strong.
I agree, porous materials are fine, but plastics present a problem over time. I once glued TV cable to the baseboard, to hold it in place. In about 2 weeks, it all just let go. I called the glue stick company to complain and they said certain plastics (like TV cable) will “off gas” or leach chemicals over time and make the glue let go.
Sure don’t remember seeing that on the packaging !

@@awesomecvl The problem is that they don't even try to innovate. They follow the market trends and are slow to react when they change. They have too much management which, in my opinion, is too restrictive on their vehicle designers. They've had a lot of cars that could have been great had management not ruined them, especially from the 80's to the early '00s, leading up to their bailout. It seems to me that they sell to a group of people who don't consider anything but GM and are willing to overlook any faults because of it. No unlike most fca buyers.
He needs to pitch his oil race commentary to Pennzoil... they'd probably love to make a commercial out of it.
