I just watched this prior to a trip to home depot for a garden project. I have watched a good number of your tests recently as I prepare to do some work around the property and appreciate the way you test the products properties head to head and the use of graphs to show the results. It cuts through all the hype and gives us real results in an easy tounderstand way. One thing that I haven't seen and would like to would be a comparison of some of the products, especially the adhesives, when used on dissimilar mateials such as brick or concrete and wood, both face and end cut. I agree with Vicky, below (or above depending on how the comments are sorted) but also, it would be good to see another test of the best and adding in Sikaflex. I’ve used a number of these, especially 3M 5200 and 4200 as well as Sika and all are really great. Also, I think a comparison of fast and slow cure versions of the same products would be interesting. I know 3M and Sika both have two cure speeds available for several of their products...
I was looking for a video like this but testing for initial grab strength on vertical surfaces. Like if I wanted to glue something to drywall would I need to add bracing or at what weight would I need to add bracing

Their Urethane Glue (the stuff that looks like honey) and their Tape are both very good products, the rest of their products are overpriced "market segment" products.. AKA they are low/mid grade crap that uses the "Gorilla" name to drive sales on the store shelves.
The original Gorilla Glue is good at what it does, but it looks like they just bought up old formulations when they expanded their range. My take on it is always do your research and find the best tool for the job, or in this case the manufacturer that made their fortune in this specific marketplace (the F26 in particular seems to fit the bill here). Rather than being a brand junkie and exhibit slavish devotion to any one company. These days all businesses seek to diversify to protect themselves from market fluctuations and unplanned obsolescence of their key products. Which means that 90% of their product line is likely to have limited in house R&D, if any, and most likely they've just paid patent fees and copied someone else's design, or worse still, they've put their own branding on a third party product. An exception to this, especially within the adhesives sector is 3M, who have infinite money and R&D resources because companies and governments have been using their products for donkeys years, for everything from adhesives, tape and insulation to bespoke products used on vessels launched into space. They are the world leaders in all things sticky, but you pay a price premium for all that R&D and the companies monolithic infrastructure and overheads. Sometimes the smaller companies with greater specificity in a particular area are the best bet overall for cost vs performance. F26 is made by a company started in 1930, and while it may no longer be family owned, there's still a lot of experience in their sector making products that people in the industry actually use. As for Flex, at that price to performance ratio they need to go back to the drawing board and create a new formulation. Neither good wet or dry, on wood or plastic, and ridiculously priced to boot. They're taking the piss even more than Gorilla are! Certainly nothing to be proud of if you work for Flex. Do better yo! Or drop your prices to a more appropriate level for the performance at the very least.
I'd love to see a full JB test. regular vs quick vs thier other offerings. i'd love to also see heat as a test factor since its called out in regular v quick in strength.

These videos are great!!! And much appreciated!!! As a side note: my son had a car breakdown as a result of a manifold leak. He called me and I mixed up J B Weld and added in some shredded steel wool and applied it to the crack. It fixed the leak and lasted until he sold the car a year or so later with no issues. J B weld is ALWAYS in my emergency car bag. It just WORKS!!!!

Forensic Detailing goes very into depth in his product control tests, although his products are cleaning products for cars, the way he makes everything fair using similar ratios and developed his own dirt simulator to make sure all tests are equal.
Consumer Reports .... used to. However not on the "every-day" type stuff that we need. Project Farm is filling that void, top tier review methods and results!
I use a lot of these products that he test he shows me exactly which ones not to use it since I started following his advice my projects been coming out better

Maybe I missed this in the video but how long did you let each adhesive dry/cure? The 3M 5200 takes about 7 days so is the test results you got from the full 7 day cure length? Thanks for your videos.

IMHO 3M is one of the few companies left in this world whose products are ALL of high quality. If I see there's a 3M equivalent to what I'm looking to buy, I'll get the 3M product if at all possible. And no, I don't work for them. :)
I've never tried 3M 5200 due to the cost. For wet applications, it's clearly the winner and a product I'll be trying in the future. Thanks for the video!

Another excellent set of tests! I LOVE it when one product stands out far above the rest, and here, the 3M was amazing -- ESPECIALLY after a soaking. If you need serious waterproof construction adhesive this video makes it very clear that 3m 5200 is your adhesive. Thanks for providing such CLEAR information!
your videos have influenced numerous purchasing decisions ive made in the last month. it is a comforting feeling to buy something knowing i'm likely getting the best value for my money. i sincerely thank you for everything you have researched and shared.
For the future glue test, I would be really interested in seeing a sanded PVC pipe test instead of an smooth PVC pipe test. I have used 5200 on my boat alot and always sand it before applying. From my experience, the sanding makes a BIG difference in holding power, and I'm curious to see if that's real or not.
If you're using it for sealing, you're going to hate the future. Use 4000UV instead. Same great sealing, but a bit less adhesion making removal of thru hulls and seacocks easier for maintenance and rebedding.
Love your videos! They have been so helpful to me in buying quality tools. One suggestion I have to improve the shear test is to move the the pin/hook directly over the glue joint. Right now it is creating a little bit of torsional stress on the joint, which is trying to pull apart the bottom.
Seeing this video, and having recently bought a dashcam with a 3M adhesive pad mount that I could not remove for the life of me after placing improperly, makes me want to see you do a similar video to this only with adhesive pads/mounts. Perhaps on glass along with other surfaces? Thanks for the awesome content!
A tip in more ways than one. Use a Winged Twist On Electrical Wire Nut to save any unused portion in tubes. It digs into the plastic tip nicely and seals it well for next time's use. Solvent based versus water based will always give mixed results. JB weld did better than I expected on the pvc, for sure.

You’re doing a great service to the trades! Keep it up PLEASE. 3M 5200 who hoo! I glued down IPE 5/4 decking on treated lumber frame with it some 25 years ago with zero mechanical fasters, and it’s still holding strong! Always new it was great stuff but thanks for the validation. Looking forward to part 2 because I’m a fan of PL Premium as well.
I work in construction so I really appreciate this test. We use liquid nails mostly. I've had to go back and try to remove something stuck to the wall and it completely ripped the sheetrock out before coming loose.

PL Premium x3 is my vote in my experience, but since your including the more recently new PL x8 my money is on that. Impressed with the 3m though. My most impressed experience with PL is with deco concrete wall blocks. 7 year old install removing the glued down cap stones from the block wall, the glue never failed, the Caps or block pulled away from each other taking the glue it was attached to like in the results with the wood you observed. But that's wood with grain and not compressed and fully cured stable concrete blocks. That was with the 3x, 8x never existed at the time.
I was an marine electronics installer in the past. We only used 5200 below the waterline on boats. Transducers were 3 inch holes in the boat bottom which we ran a bead around and never had a leak.
As a scientist, there are a few areas of improvement to help limit variables, but overall I approve and enjoy the channel. The only thing I can really see here for improvement is a measured amount of product being used. Then again, each product is different and may have different directions.

I raced offshore powerboats for several years and we always used 5200 as the adhesive to attach the drives to the stern (along with of course significant hardware). It was like no one ever even thought of any other option or choice - it was always the defacto adhesive (and probably still is).

The only downside to 5200 is that thicker layers can take a fairly long time to cure, and it cures more slowly in dry conditions. Seems to need moist air for a good cure; and it's not all that good for gap-fulling applications. But man, it sure is tough!

3M 5200 is the factory adhesive to hold the fitting the driveshaft goes through to the hull on Yamaha PWCs, and has been for decades, I'd say its proven the test of time. Likely many other OEMs are using it for other purposes also, I've had to replace those fittings, and let me tell you, its a job. The 5200 will tear the fiberglass before it releases, better to just grind it off to avoid damaging the hull.
@@athhud I would suspect so, I work mainly on PWCs and the other brands use a different setup for sealing the driveshaft. Most brands use no sealant if the fitting is above or at the waterline, I've seen seadoo and honda sponsons leaking water in through the bolts threads, I wouldn't want to 5200 them on, you'd never get them back off lol!
Glad you addressed the wood failing rather than the glue. Like un your wood glues video, often the wood failed as well as the glue. As a woodworker, it’s well known that most glue joints are actually stronger than the wood around it. We’ll often see large chunks of wood still adhering to the other piece to which it was glued. Also, end grain is the weakest way to glue pieces together. Face grain to face grain (or edge grain) makes a far stronger joint.
I really appreciate your approach to testing. No BS and great results. I would suggest you getting an Instron tensile tester or something similar. You’ll get much more data and more consistent results. Keep it up!!! We all appreciate it!
@@billybobjoe198 Depends, what chemicals are in the paint stripper? Nitril ans vinyl usually suffice, but chlorogranics like methylene chloride (dichloromethane) pass through them quickly and are carcinogenic. Both can resist acetone well enough though.
@@EgorKaskader nitril doesn't resist acetone. In fact it starts breaking down in acetone pretty quickly. I had wondered why my black nitrils were breaking so quickly all of a sudden. It's because I was cleaning up paint and resin mess using acetone.

Love the video! Thank you for making sure quality content that is easy to find when looking for different brands and options for just about everything! I know it wouldn’t be the easiest video, but I was thinking it might be cool to do a video on the durability of different wood finishes, particularly in rough outdoor weather conditions. You could make it a two part with one on the short term-overall look and protection the finish provides against scratches. (For example some polyurethane and marine coatings make the wood look fake but will provide a much better scratch resistant surface as opposed to danish oil which looks great but needs to be reapplied and offers no scratch protection) And long term how well each finish held up to high uv exposure over a year.
i was a professional floor contractor for roughly 15years, and PL400 was what i used to attach transition strips, or tack strips to cement floors i couldnt nail in to. like when they had buried heating elements, or were poor quality concrete, even some cured hardened concretes, since even though you can nail into any cement, some dont respond well to being nailed in to, whether its chipping, or poor nail grip.
Would be interesting to see this adhesive series repeated with concrete, fiberglass, mild steel, aluminum and copper substrates, and include varying temperatures as well as moisture, very informative review. Love your channel and efforts. Thanks much! 👍

3M excelled, and as JB Weld is a two part adhesive, I can negate that, although it was pretty impressive! I use the construction adhesive a lot in marine applications and I can see the value of the 3M product over the long haul. Great job!
5200 was/is the go to adhesive for high end construction for us in SC. For some pricier builds, we had to consider maintenance or repairs would mean complete replacement of the pieces joined because the glue was that good.
Favorite Channel ! For anyone new to 3M 5200 don’t use on anything that may need to be separated in the future and definitely don’t mistake for general chalking lol as did a very sorry boat I knew. 3M 4200 if possible future separation. The 3M line are incredible when you need that.

As a contractor with 3M I can't say anything about what I see there. But yes they do a lot of testing.
I know when I need a product that works, such as double-sided foam tape, I always choose 3M.
When you create the 'sticky note' by accident, you are the adhesive industry equivalent of DARPA, so yeah, 3M.

IMHO 3M is one of the few companies left in this world whose products are ALL of high quality. If I see there's a 3M equivalent to what I'm looking to buy, I'll get the 3M product if at all possible. And no, I don't work for them. :)

yea, 3M isn't cheap, but I know that if i use a 3m product and it fails, it wasn't the fault of the product and rather design failure.

For the future glue test, I would be really interested in seeing a sanded PVC pipe test instead of an smooth PVC pipe test. I have used 5200 on my boat alot and always sand it before applying. From my experience, the sanding makes a BIG difference in holding power, and I'm curious to see if that's real or not.

If you're using it for sealing, you're going to hate the future. Use 4000UV instead. Same great sealing, but a bit less adhesion making removal of thru hulls and seacocks easier for maintenance and rebedding.
Once opened, the 5200 gets hard if you try to cap it and save it for later.
Love your videos! They have been so helpful to me in buying quality tools.
One suggestion I have to improve the shear test is to move the the pin/hook directly over the glue joint. Right now it is creating a little bit of torsional stress on the joint, which is trying to pull apart the bottom.
Seeing this video, and having recently bought a dashcam with a 3M adhesive pad mount that I could not remove for the life of me after placing improperly, makes me want to see you do a similar video to this only with adhesive pads/mounts. Perhaps on glass along with other surfaces? Thanks for the awesome content!

A tip in more ways than one.
Use a Winged Twist On Electrical Wire Nut to save any unused portion in tubes. It digs into the plastic tip nicely and seals it well for next time's use.
Solvent based versus water based will always give mixed results. JB weld did better than I expected on the pvc, for sure.

I work in construction so I really appreciate this test. We use liquid nails mostly. I've had to go back and try to remove something stuck to the wall and it completely ripped the sheetrock out before coming loose.

Well, we saw that the wood failed first in all cases. Better to be safe and just make the joists themselves out of JB Weld.

PL Premium x3 is my vote in my experience, but since your including the more recently new PL x8 my money is on that. Impressed with the 3m though.
My most impressed experience with PL is with deco concrete wall blocks. 7 year old install removing the glued down cap stones from the block wall, the glue never failed, the Caps or block pulled away from each other taking the glue it was attached to like in the results with the wood you observed. But that's wood with grain and not compressed and fully cured stable concrete blocks. That was with the 3x, 8x never existed at the time.
I was an marine electronics installer in the past. We only used 5200 below the waterline on boats. Transducers were 3 inch holes in the boat bottom which we ran a bead around and never had a leak.

As a scientist, there are a few areas of improvement to help limit variables, but overall I approve and enjoy the channel.
The only thing I can really see here for improvement is a measured amount of product being used. Then again, each product is different and may have different directions.

I raced offshore powerboats for several years and we always used 5200 as the adhesive to attach the drives to the stern (along with of course significant hardware). It was like no one ever even thought of any other option or choice - it was always the defacto adhesive (and probably still is).

The only
downside to 5200 is that thicker layers can take a fairly long time to cure, and it cures more slowly in dry conditions. Seems to need moist air for a good cure; and it's not all that good for gap-fulling applications. But man, it sure is tough!

3M 5200 is the factory adhesive to hold the fitting the driveshaft goes through to the hull on Yamaha PWCs, and has been for decades, I'd say its proven the test of time. Likely many other OEMs are using it for other purposes also, I've had to replace those fittings, and let me tell you, its a job. The 5200 will tear the fiberglass before it releases, better to just grind it off to avoid damaging the hull.

I think every competent watercraft builder uses 5200 for thru-hull fittings.
@@athhud I would suspect so, I work mainly on PWCs and the other brands use a different setup for sealing the driveshaft. Most brands use no sealant if the fitting is above or at the waterline, I've seen seadoo and honda sponsons leaking water in through the bolts threads, I wouldn't want to 5200 them on, you'd never get them back off lol!

Glad you addressed the wood failing rather than the glue. Like un your wood glues video, often the wood failed as well as the glue. As a woodworker, it’s well known that most glue joints are actually stronger than the wood around it. We’ll often see large chunks of wood still adhering to the other piece to which it was glued. Also, end grain is the weakest way to glue pieces together. Face grain to face grain (or edge grain) makes a far stronger joint.

@@billybobjoe198 Depends, what chemicals are in the paint stripper? Nitril ans vinyl usually suffice, but chlorogranics like methylene chloride (dichloromethane) pass through them quickly and are carcinogenic. Both can resist acetone well enough though.
@@EgorKaskader nitril doesn't resist acetone. In fact it starts breaking down in acetone pretty quickly. I had wondered why my black nitrils were breaking so quickly all of a sudden. It's because I was cleaning up paint and resin mess using acetone.
I'm impressed with all these numbers. I had no idea how strong these modern adhesives are.

I know it wouldn’t be the easiest video, but I was thinking it might be cool to do a video on the durability of different wood finishes, particularly in rough outdoor weather conditions.
You could make it a two part with one on the short term-overall look and protection the finish provides against scratches. (For example some polyurethane and marine coatings make the wood look fake but will provide a much better scratch resistant surface as opposed to danish oil which looks great but needs to be reapplied and offers no scratch protection)
And long term how well each finish held up to high uv exposure over a year.

i was a professional floor contractor for roughly 15years, and PL400 was what i used to attach transition strips, or tack strips to cement floors i couldnt nail in to. like when they had buried heating elements, or were poor quality concrete, even some cured hardened concretes, since even though you can nail into any cement, some dont respond well to being nailed in to, whether its chipping, or poor nail grip.

3M excelled, and as JB Weld is a two part adhesive, I can negate that, although it was pretty impressive! I use the construction adhesive a lot in marine applications and I can see the value of the 3M product over the long haul. Great job!

5200 was/is the go to adhesive for high end construction for us in SC. For some pricier builds, we had to consider maintenance or repairs would mean complete replacement of the pieces joined because the glue was that good.
