I so appreciate you thoroughly explaining this. I am an intermediate level reloader and had never heard the term. Totally got roasted in a reloading forum trying to get clarification on this for not fully understanding it. So valuable to have people still willing to teach others. Thank you, Erik!
Most of those forums are full of half ass know it alls that jump at the opportunity to be a d!&$head to somebody that knows just a little less than they do. Join the Cortina Precision forum. Very knowledgeable and very helpful.
A clicker was something that changed the channel when I was growing up!
Jokes aside, in my experience when you get a "clicker" there will actually be 2 clicks. It will be hard to lift the handle like you said. But you will get one click just before primary extraction when it snaps the case loose from the wall of the chamber. And a second click on cocking/primary extraction.
At speed you will hear click-click. That means she's too spicy! Usually that will be accompanied by a very faint ejector mark. Not a swipe. Just a faint outline that you can only see in the right light.
Why? Because that brass is flowing now. Not just ouward and adhering to the chamber but also flowing into your boltface.
Good stuff Erik.
Yup here in MA it’s a clicka
My family's odd, we've always called it a box. Dad's classic "Where's the box!" for the "remote" lol
Must have come from a wealthy family, as we changed the channel with vice-grips back in the day... :)
Yup, in the 70's remotes didn't use infra-red, or even batteries, but a high pitched sound which came from a high pitched tuning fork inside the remote. It made a loud clicking noise when the hammer hit the fork to change channels.
@@UnCoolDad if I stroked the empty steel fingers of the K-Tel record stand like a harp, the TV would click through multiple channels until the vibrations stopped. Science!
I’ve been reloading for 30+ years, but mostly for pistol. When someone asks me about reloading for rifle, the first thing I tell them is to watch your videos. I’ve learned a ton from them as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 👍🏼👍🏼
A clicker is when you hit a drywall screw with your mud knife because the drywall hanger didn't set it deep enough, so always charge extra for clickers.
Man when I think I have learned all the tools of reloading your channel humbles me again thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Opens the garage door.
😂
Changes the channel…
@ErikCortina That to. When I was a kid in the early 60s. Parents would just tell you to get up and change the channel.
@@ErikCortina where can we find the tool for pulling the back of the bolt? that looked very useful

@tarster
Google search for "remington bolt disassembly tool".
Thanks for your explanation! Often terms you use in the U.S. have not yet made it to Europe - it is very helpful when a successful shooter and rifle parts maker explains such "simple" things! That's one reason why we follow you!
The knowledge all came from Europe. But your Royal run countries burned the public books that held that knowledge. This is the main reason the internet is awesome. Info is free.
Good video Eric. I use the dies you make for 7MM PRC and 6.5 PRC. Have been telling ppl since I got them that they’re the best way to avoid clickers. Even talk about it on a few podcast, also saw you at shot this year and told you at the Lapua booth before I went in to a meeting with Geoff. Thanks for the handloading equipment you make.
This video just answered a question that I had about your mandrel die. I reloaded some 6.5PRC brass and used your mandrel die for the first time. I noticed that there was increased resistance as the die got to the base. It was enough that I used die wax to make it more smooth.
Thanks for the informative explanation of what a clicker is Eric! When I first heard the term, I could not put an experience from 50 years of handloading to it. But as of now I know I have had a few in the past years.
I have wanted a roll sizer for 9mm for a while. Glad you brought it into the US.
a clicker is what we used to turn the tv station, back in the 80's
Mr. Cortina thanks so much. I swapped from Hornady ammo to burger. Hornady was holding about 3-4 inch group. You told me to swap to burger ammo and now I’m holding less than an inch group. Most a time it’s 3/4 of an inch but sometimes it’s closer to a 1/2. 4 shot groups. THANKS.
Just wondering, why four shot groups ?
Why not the standard 3 or 5 shot group. 3 for a hunting rifle and 5 for a tactical or precision rifle.
Ok, I almost messaged Speedy. You cleared up my issue with my 257 STW. 🎉
Can you make me some dies for my .257 STW? Likely not as that’s a lot of work for a one off cartridge… Or I guess you give me the “I don’t wanna do it price” lol
The only reason "clickers were not an issue fifty years ago is because they were just part of the "stuff happens" scenario. It wasn't until the last ten years or so that anyone really considered it to be much of an issue. It was just something that happened after a while. One cure was to not make chambers too tight. Then the FL dies would take care of the issue. The other cure was to size with dies which would take care of the dimensional issue. Your dies use that approach. I have a 30/06 reamer which is a little on the tight side (468 at the base) this isn't bad with most brass, which is a little smaller (around 465 or 466) but with Lapua it can be a problem, so I had to get a bigger reamer. Also, Norma brass was problematic because it was a little soft, so the head expanded before it might with Winchester brass, for instance.
The truth is, one shoots better if they aren't having to fight with their rifle, so this video is good info. WH
Thanks for the education. Would you consider making a "intro into precision rifle" video teaching how to get into precision rifle shooting and recommendations on a first rifle and reloading equipment for new shooters? Id be really interested and i bet im not the only one.
Once I annealed my brass too much , the throat lost its brass spring back and stayed expanded after the shot. Very difficult extracting. Primal rights explains elasticity and plasticity
Hey Erik Fantastic meeting you and John at shot show. 🤗
Thanks, you too!
Great explanation, clear and easy to understand cause, symptoms and fixes.😊
Thanks! Glad it was helpful.
I found that taking the firing out of the bolt when testing for clickers really has a dramatic effect for that clicking sound if its there. Without the firing pin the bolt makes a loud click sound when it hits the primary extraction because of the enlarged base stuck in the chamber for rem 700 and clones.
As always Erik here to save the day.. thanks man!
You're welcome!
Thank you for this video, I heard the term clicker but wasn’t sure what exactly to look for.
Thanks Eric! Awesome explanation of causes and remedies.
using the definition "used it too much or ran it too hard" makes me want to start calling all kinds of things clickers. You think my wife will understand if i start calling her my favorite clicker?
😂
She’d be happier with a larger Man-drill 😅
Way back when I was got reloading dies for a lever action rifle, the gunsmith sold me a small base sizing die. This stuck problem must be what he was helping me avoid.
A clicker is a card you clip onto your bicycle frame so it clicks on the spokes.
Sure miss those Barndominium builds
Thanks. Ive been wondering about this.
Excellent video.
I thought a clicker was something that the Airborne used in WW2 to tell if the guy in the bushes next to you was friend or foe. He used a "clicker".
The only real answer! 👍🏼 Even the little metal alligator clickers we played with as a kid in the 60’s were just a copy of the WWII version
Those were Crickets.
Nice Kahles scope! I found a killer Lisenfeld scope in a Goodwill store, of all places. Lisenfeld is called Doctor now, but they were on par with Kahles. I can see into shadows and the shade just like with a Kahles or any other high end scopes with top notch German or Japanese glass in them. You can see the $2000-$5500 difference, as plain as day.
How much did you steal it for lol? When do you think it was made? I’m a scope fan since I was a kid over 6 decades ago. Love to hear about your unicorn find.
Clicker is a device that lets a target archer know they are at full draw. Or a dog training device.
Or raptors
Is there any video on the build of this rifle?
A clicker is what those Airborne guys used behind enemy lines back in WW2 to identify the friendlies.
I can speak to the mandrel die! I’ve been dreading getting clickers on my 300 wsm because I seen a video that said that cartridge was notorious for it. It’s never happened yet and I load my hunting rounds hot! So to help prevent the clickers, I ordered the Cortina expander mandrel even though I already had the 21st century mandrel, because I seen a comment on one of Erik’s videos about how the mandrels are tight at the web. Sure enough, it did squeeze another .001 down at the case web, putting my case web to sammi speck. I swear, every thing I’ve purchased with the Erik Cortina name on it has been beefy and built to last! On top of that, they’ve done exactly what has been advertised! From the tuner to the mandrel.
Thank you sharing! That role die is interesting… That could save quality brass to reuse after re-barreling or changing rifles.take brass back to spec…
I’d think it would be great for shooters of rare cartridges to preserve brass.
Good to know. Thank you.
Can you give info on the rifle.. what action and bolt combination?
Thanks! Good information!
Glad it was helpful!
Hopefully the price can improve on the rollsizer, or maybe a lesser expensive version come out.
Yeah you can buy alot of brass for the price of that Rollsizer.
I have the Rollsizer but in my experience it has problems with tapered cartridge cases (e.g., those of the 22-250 Rem), which given their shape cannot always rotate properly and slip on the rollers, which fail to make the proper friction on the walls of the base of the case precisely because of its pronounced taper.
In contrast, cylindrical casings such as those of the 308 Win have no problem rolling by adhering perfectly to the rollers of the Rollsizer.
That’s very interesting. Considering so many casings were made with tapers to aid extraction in dangerous situations like military combat dangerous game hunting. Certainly limits its’ uses.
These are great videos. When you start making stuff for 338 Lapua I'd like to try somethings out.
Great info!
Thank you 😊
The only clicker I acknowledge are the ones at the gate where people are taking count on how many people pass through. I don't have to worry about rifle clickers I have a high-quality rifle from the 70s
Reminds me of a Mauser action😊
All these years my oldman was telling me that clicker was the tv remote
Eric can you use this on brass that has already been full length sized?
I love my cortina mandrel dies , but I’ll throw my brass out before I get a roll sizer 😂😂
Question- once you determine that rollsizing is necessary, how many firings will you get before it becomes necessary to rollsize again? I know it depends, but on average?
I recently got a roll sizer, expensive but worth it. Also great for removing the Glock bulge.
What rifle is that Mr Cortina?
May I ask for a source to purchase a competition rifle case ?
If no fabricators, maybe plans are available.
I’m looking to get started and want to have the rifle protected. With the weight involved it would damage average cases. Thank You for sharing knowledge that helps us !
Pelican makes hard cases and Armageddon gear makes soft cases.
THANK YOU!
You’re welcome.
but if you do roll sizing or full lenght calibration dont you loose the tight fit in the chamber? i find accuracy is better with rounds that have been fired in the chamber before with neck sizing, whats your opinion on that?
you can buy a ton of new brass for the price of the rollsizer.
never heard of the term in reference to this. EVER.
Can you make dies for any caliber. Or just the calibers you offer on your website
We make custom dies as well.
@ErikCortina awesome. Don't ask me why I did it. But I built a 243 wssm that has this issue. It has a tight chamber at the base and I haven't found a fl die that will touch it at the .200 line. My body die won't touch it either. I'll give yall a call soon. Thank you sir. Roll sizer looks awesome too.
I can honestly say this is the first time I’ve heard the term “clicker” as related to firearms.
In target archery it’s a simple strip of metal that tells you’re at perfect draw length by clicking.
@ I did not know target archery had a click. It makes sense though because it’s all about consistency. Thanks!
@@chrisgunsandguitars1403
A very simple strip of spring steel ahead of the arrow rest. You slip the arrow behind it then as the target point of the arrow passes under it, the strip snaps back against the riser making a “click” cueing the shooter to release. Lots of words for almost nothing 😉
@@14goldmedals Well this is a firearms channel. You brought up archery.
@ErikCortina , can clickers be caused by going from one chamber to another?
Hey, I know this will be a little "off-topic", but I'm having a very similar problem to what was just described by Erik as a "primary extraction" issue with a 1940 K98k. Right at the top of the bolt opening rotation it gets really hard to turn & sticks unless manhandled / forced the last tiny bit of bolt rotation before releasing & opening. This is with factory new S&B or PPU ammo (which is somewhat "downloaded").
Went through a lot of possible cause checking & can't seem to figure it out. Headspacing is good (checked with gauges), bolt lugs look good, no detectable bolt lug setback, raceway isn't bent... Thx.
S&B always comes with a very high pressure (in my opinion). What you experienced is not unusual at all, most people using S&B will have the same issue. Your cases are „clicking“ after firing.
P.S. yes - I am talking about S&B factory new ammo.. It is definitely not a „soft“ cartridge.
@BarneyLeBrain cool, thx. It def doesn't happen as severely with all loads; some are worse than other. (Also just read something about "expanded" or "blown out" chambers, especially with older, well used rifles. Test seems to be firing a round without the extractor attached to the bolt. Open bolt after firing, then use a cleaning rod or dowel to see how much force it takes to tap it out.)
I think a „blown out chamber“ (a chamber that expanded ?) can still produce clickers.
The real issue is the high pressure of the cartridge - it will produce „clickers“ in all kinds of chambers.
But you are correct, especially with an older rifle you should be cautious of too strong loads as it could really damage (in extreme: blow) the rifle.
If it does annoy you and/or you are worried about yourself and your rifle I would suggest to test some other brand of factory ammo.
Darken the bullet on a few new rounds with a Sharpie. Carefully insert into the rifle and close the bolt, open and extract. Check for marks where the rifling might be touching the bullet. This will increase pressures.
Is there a difference between what you described and head case separation? Are people who reload for precision rifle using case guages on finished ammo?
A case separation typically occurs if someone resizes cases too much e.g. „in length“ -> the distance from base to neck is reduced too much, therefore upon the next firing the case will expand in length again. After some firings the case might separate.
A „case head“ separation is similar, e.g. you are oversizing the neck in dimension (bushing way too tight).
After some firings your cases might separate just above the shoulder (case neck might still stick in the chamber).
A „clicker“ is just a case that sticks to the chamber due to high pressure while firing. This is not necessarily a bad / uncommon thing. Question is, if it annoys you / slows you down / disturbs the rifle in a match.
Gauges: yes and no. If it is possible to check the final cartridge in the chamber (firing mechanism / firing pin etc. removed!) you do not necessarily need a gauge. Your chamber is the best gauge available.
If you are not able to check your cartridge (e.g. in benchrest you typically reload on site, but I think the rules were changed and you are not allowed to insert cartridges for checking in the chamber anymore) a gauge might be helpful.
@@BarneyLeBrain thank you so much for the clear and complete explanation. I learned a lot just now.
What is the difference between your mandrel does and Sinclair mandrels?
My dies size the base to prevent clickers.
Bottom line is that unless you are using an Arbor Press with NO shell holder you will NEVER get the base of the case resized. The Rollsizer IS the ONLY way to get the base of the case resized if your chosen press uses shell holders or shell plates. The Case Pro 100 also rolled the base all the way down but that machine is all but defunct.
What action is that?
Changes the TV channel
Doesn't the AW-2 PRC reamers fix the clickers?
No. 😬
Do you have expander dies for sale for .30-06 ? I want something to size the base of my .30-06 case
Any avaliable?
In the last section, you should have shown an actual case being treated: A picture is worth a thousand words.
A clicker is a beetle shaped piece of metal that clicks. They gave them out to customers for a sale at Zayres Department Store when I was a kid. When a customer would click, a girl on roller skates would find him or her and offer help. I personally watched a bunch of perverted hairy single disco Stew type men clicking constantly to get the young roller girls to come help them out in the women's underwear section of the store. I guess an oversized case is a clicker too. Zayre is not in business anymore.
-INTERESTING DETAIL.
-GOOD TOWARD UNDERSTANDING AMMO PREPARATION TO STANDARDS FOR CONSISTENCY IN SHOTS.
-LOUSY SPEAKING ORGANIZATION WISE. ACCEPTABLE FOR GETTING THE TECH DONE.
-I THINK HE'D HAVE DONE IT BETTER, IF HE HAD EXPLAINED THE BADNESS OF EXPANDED BASES, THEN HOW A CLICK (MAYBE BETTER CALLED A SNAP?) IS AN INDICATOR (HARBINGER?), WARNING OF REALLY BAD THINGS TO COME.
THE BOLT / ACTION FUNCTIONS ARE ALSO GOOD TO UNDERSTAND, BUT NOT RELEVANT TO THE TITLE THIS TIME. DEFINITELY GOOD FOR A DIFFERENT VIDEO.
-THANK YOU, GOOD VIDEO. EARNED MY SUSCRIBE!
Clicker is the tv remote buddy. Sometimes the kid if you still have the knobs
I don't understand how a Mandrel Die does anything to size or shrink the base of the case. I get that the FL Sizing Die does, but a Mandrel Die only touches the neck ... as far as I know. What am I missing here?
I bought a mandrel die from Erik for this exact problem. Because I’m shooting a 7 Sherman Short there’s no exact match to the base diameter on his website. I contacted Erik’s team and Mitch hand measured the proper size mandrel die amongst other cartridges for me and it seems to have cured this problem. The only place the brass ever touches the die is at the base. I use the expander in a separate step.
