This is a compilation put together of some TASes (Tool Assisted Speedruns) for the individual tracks in Mario Kart DS. I did not make these; credit goes to the authors featured. I merely recorded and put the runs together.
For those unaware, a Tool Assisted Speedrun, or TAS, is the theoretically fastest known possible playthrough of a video game. A TAS is not performed in real time using original hardware. Rather, it is performed on an emulator with the use of slowdowns and save states so that perfect precision can be achieved. These time trial runs do not count on the Players' Page leaderboards and are purely created for the purpose of entertaining and showcasing the game being pushed to its limit.

I must stress that the gameplay you are seeing in this video is NOT performed by me! Are there still a significant number of people that accuse TAS authors of cheating RTA? I'm not saying there aren't, but if there are that's very sad.
ik, I'm not a speedrun mastermind but when I see a tas, I wouldn't say it's cheating because there is a drastic difference; it's still sad to see this miscommunication occurring even if very rare.
Mario Kart DS is a game that is too complete for a console with limitations like the Nintendo DS. They managed to make such an excellent game that to this day I consider it the best Mario Kart I have ever played.
I still think mario kart 8 is objectively better but Mario Kart DS is still a fantastic game that laid the blueprint for every following title in the franchise.

I think optimal MKDS showcases some of the most beautiful racing lines in the series. I love 8 Deluxe for re-emphasizing the mini-turbo in the meta, but nothing touches the way you never have to sacrifice your drift to keep a tight line.
There are no straight paths to break up the sections, or allow for straightforward setups. It’s one unbroken flow of a swinging pendulum being guided through a series of narrow doorways, digging for angled bursts of speed to shoot yourself around corners in a way that already sets you up for the next.
Take the rolling tube section of Bowser’s Castle at 8:27. It isn’t just impressive for the balancing act, it’s the way you can see Suuuper aiming for that pristine exit line onto the ramp from even that first deep carve along the pipe.
A damn good game, well deserving of its passionate community. Cheers to all involved!

I agree, this game will always be in the core of my heart as it's the first game I completed at the age of 6. I didn't know snaking back then but did it in mission mode lol
All that is true, but I will point out something that looks like a pretty major design flaw : the fact that you can go through large sections of off-road with only mushrooms. Don’t give me wrong, it’s very impressive and it may be more technical than it looks, but using mushrooms instead of snaking through most off-road sections in this game seems to barely gain time which somewhat defeats the point of shrooms as well as the « item » stat which I thought was an interesting experiment in MKDS, though I don’t know what it does in GP-like modes.
You can go through the off-road not because of the simple miniturbo, but because of the start boost. If I recall correctly, the start boost is special and let's you go through off road, and if you can maintain it by chaining any type of boost you will keep the speed and the special properties. In reality it's extremely difficult to maintain and you can't do that in all tracks.
@Vas0sky Prolonged Rocket Boost is maintaining a max Rocket Boost for as long as possible through Boosts like Mushrooms and Mini Turbos. It also allows you to keep your speed through off road.
Very cool compilation, honored to be a part of it too! I hope that in the near future more people will get into MKDS TASing so we can enjoy more of these!

It only took the user 8 to 9 seconds to finish each GCN Baby Park lap. I'm impressed.

MkDS has always fascinated me as an Mk7 player. Mk7 is nowhere near this intense with drifting and it’s mindblowing to watch

Even though I have very little clue about this type of stuff, it still intrigues me as I have a very good attention span of around 5 hours and this just peaks my brain with all the crazy maneuvers done.

This is amazing!!! The way in Delfino Square Suuper seems to hit or almost hit the border of the bridge, damn.
Question: why do they collide with some walls in Bowser Castle? The speed does go down even for a fraction of a second. Since this is like the best time possible, how doesn't it affect the run? Cheers :)))

The wall clips serve to take tighter lines. For the record, the Bowser Castle TAS is quite improvable.

Thanks! An All Missions TAS was being worked on at some point but sadly the project got halted. But I do believe that Suuper has a few TASes for some of the individual missions on his channel.

I'm planning on making one but I don't really understand the drifting mechs coming from MKW
The mini turbos are executed manually in MKDS with constant left-right inputs on the D-pad for the blue and orange sparks to come out, so it's vastly different to MKW. If you want to learn more about MKDS TAS'ing, refer to the link in the pinned comment.

@@mkdsabel I haven't played the multiplayer, and no I'm not very good at it.
But you have to admit, the ability to get boost after boost is a little overpowered, and probably why they didn't use it in any other mariokart games (as far as I know).
If you can do it, good for you, but that doesn't mean the mechanic isn't broken.
why is the rob-bls so good for tas? does it have good off-road?
The ROB-BLS is also used in regular time trials for most of the tracks. It is the kart with the best speed stat and longest mini turbo boost length; nothing to do with the off-road as most of the time PRB is active during these runs.

Fastfalling, which in most situations increases your speed mid-air.
