  • We're making progress! We got the DC-9 airplane house moved into its final spot here at the FLY8MA Pilot Lodge. In this episode, we pour the concrete foundation, start framing the jetbridge entry way, and reassemble the wings and tail section of the aircraft.
Stay tuned for more updates as we convert this Douglas DC-9 into a 3 bedroom 2 bath luxury vacation rental home!

I used to fly that DC-9. I was a captain at Airborne Express which later became ABX AIR. DHL bought our ground delivery system but the airline was spun off due to foreign ownership laws. We became a de facto airline of DHL.

That guy on the 50 foot ladder putting the tail stabilizer on deserves a cash bonus!
    That looks sketchy at best

1 inch centres for the rivets also weakens the fuselage yoir securing the tail wing to. Would you not put an RSJ / I beam through centre of tailwind into base of fuselage to support as I wouldn't rely on those rivets with strong sidewinds catching the size of the tailwind not to mention the weight it it & horizontal stabiliser wing up top. Add I gravity & centre of gravity being so high all adds up to sketchiness

Tar paper around the windows, calcium silicate tiles on the aluminum body, Refletive foam insulation tape on the calcium tiles and add a radiant heat system with a wind turbine or solar panels for power.

For the window finnishes take a mould, scan, and render it how you like and 3D print one and make a plug then resin the rest. or just 3D print them all.

Wow! I really like your Project! You are the only 1 channel who does a series! Would be so nice if you would buy a B737 (my favorite Plane) and build also a house Plane out of it! 💪🤔 👀

2 things. when i first watched the DC-6 vid my first thought was for that window. 3d print a tray for the window trim. may be able to get a better easier fit. 3d printers are not too expensive, can print in pieces and you can always hire out work to do the design aspect and can print on site. another thought was acrylic for the windows. Genuinely curious because I figured shape it to the airplane and you could get a flush or near flush finish. another thought is mylar for the underside of the spray foam. Ive had to use mylar blankets before and actually lined my sleeping bag within when I was a boy scout. worked a treat to stay warm in cold temps but I don't really know if it would have an effect on a large area. i have no idea if any of this is viable at all as I am not qualified to speak on any of it😂

Great work guys. Love your videos. It's my dream to convert a plane into a house.
Would love to see you convert a Boeing 747 or Airbus A380.
As for the insulation, do you think mylar would increase the efficiency?

Didn’t the dc9 become the md80 series? What a noisy thing to fly on. Shake, rattle and roll. I remember a jaunt between sea and fai. My first and only ride on that airframe. I always ask what type of acft when booking a flt after that flt. I won’t board the Europian version of the 737 either. RIP Morris Thomson Wife and Daughter. Failure of the jack screw maintenance I believe. Sad day for DOYON CORP and Ak Air and the whole aviation industry. Carry on.

The airbus A320 is a much better and more comfortable plane than the Boeing 737. A320s are 8 inches wider which allows each seat to be wider.

MY idea has been to use a fuselage with no wings or tail section for a house in tornado alley portion of the states. Roiund surface prevents moving air from affecting the structure. Most hail would have minor impact.Definition of a "safe house".

Except the air in a tornado is not going 300 mph in one direction, it's going 300 mph in every direction..

Maybe you could use a thermo plastic like and for the trim. Place the sheet up against the window and mold it with a heat gun then trim up the edges

doing great work that foam is very expensive but the only other way would be to use 1/4 flex foam 50 ft rolls then fiberglass but still chance of moisture I can get a DC9 but dont want to spend $100000 on top of cost of plane to build a house lol but I dont need full wing and tail feathers either, I can't believe the gaps those guys left and they are suppose to be professional carpenters wow if I did work like that my dad and granfather would have thrown me off a wing lol God bless and keep up the great work.

not sure how big the windows are but first thing i thought of was to get a trim piece 3D printed that would just slide or snap in.

Wouldn’t the insulation that the manufacturers use inbetween the skin and the cabin wall panels be exactly what you’re looking for? After all, that insulation is designed to withstand temperatures of minus 50 to minus 70 F all their working lives. I’m not suggesting you buy new, but surely there’d be bundles of the stuff at aircraft wrecking yards around the USA (and the world).

    • @fly8ma.comflighttraining199
      @fly8ma.comflighttraining199  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You'd think, but the stuff that is in there is like R3 or R5....it's pretty bad. Only reason they're warm at altitude is the fact they're burning 8,000lbs an hour of Jet-a and have a ton of waste heat from the pressurization system. Actually shocking how leaky they are for pressurized airframes.
